The sofa was set against a wall under a large picture window(观景窗). Around three o’clock that morning, Lynn opened her eyes and noticed a flashing light outside the house. She thought that it was a firefly(萤火虫). A moment later, as the light continued to flash, she realized that it was too bright to be a firefly. Then the light moved towards the window and unbelievably through the window into the room. It passed in front of her, perhaps as close as three feet. Then Lynn noticed that it appeared to have two sets of wires(电线) coming from the top and the bottom. Each time the object flashed, Lynn saw it clearly. But when the light was turned off, the object was no longer seen. Lynn was quite scared. She thought about shouting, but couldn't open her mouth. As soon as the light moved into the kitchen, she ran to her sister's bedroom.“Move over,” she said. “I saw something, maybe an alien, and that scared me, so I'm coming into bed with you.” The next morning at breakfast she told her family what had happened, but no one else had noticed anything. We have known about these strange things for more than 200 years. Their fossil (化石) record was first discovered in 1818, and the word “dinosaur” was created in 1842 by a scientist. What we know about dinosaurs comes only through the fossil record they left behind. We can get an idea of how they looked by building their skeletons (骨架) with fossilized bones and teeth. We know that they lived on land. Some walked on two legs. Others preferred four legs. Some were fast and others were quite slow. However, there are many things we don't know about dinosaurs. For example, what color were they? Nobody knows. Did they cry like lions? The fossil record does not speak. Scientists said, “We need to do more research to know more about the color and sound of dinosaurs.” Keep in mind that we just know a little about dinosaurs. D On August 12, 2018, NASA sent up the Parker Solar Probe(帕克太阳探测器) to explore the mysteries of the sun. It was named after Eugene Newman Parker, an American physicist who predicted important facts about solar activity and solar wind. The corona( 日冕) is much hotter than the surface of the sun. In order to get close to the sun, Parker is protected by a special material. This allows it to keep cool inside, even when the temperature around it is as high as l ,400℃. In April 2021, on its eighth trip around the sun, Parker actually entered the sun's corona. It flew through the corona for about five hours. For the first time in history, a spacecraft (航天器) has“ touched” the sun. Though this happened in April, it took scientists a few months to get the information back and then several more months to confirm the news. Since then, the probe has got into the corona more times. As it circles closer to the sun's surface, Parker is making new discoveries that other spacecraft were too far away to see. The discoveries will also help us know more about space weather which has a great 线 influence on the earth as well as astronauts in space. Parker will keep moving closer to the sun and diving deeper into the corona until we lose contact ( 联系) with it sometime around December 2025. It will give us plenty of chances of learning something new about our life-giving star. ( )13. The probe got its name from . The Antarctic ice sheet(南极冰盖) covers thousands of miles. Recently, scientists have discovered that the land isn't 100% flat ; under the ice is a large hídden landscape ( 风景) that has been frozen for millions of years. The scientists discovered that the land under the ice is full of hills and valleys. This secret world is greatly large, covering across 12,000 square miles. It is even larger than the whole country of Belgium. To explore this hidden land, scientists used a cool technology called radio- echo sounding. Besides the radio waves, scientists also looked at satellite images ( 图像). By studying these images and the radio wave map, a picture of the land under the ice appeared. This hidden world wasn't always icy and cold. A long, long time ago, before the ice took over, it was a lively place with rivers, hills, and even forests. But then, something unexpected happened. The land got covered in ice, freezing everything in time like an ice sculpture(冰雕). This freezing event happened more than 34 million years ago, making it a truly ancient landscape. Now, scientists are not just wondering about the past. The worry is that the ice in Antarctica might melt, changing everything. Even though the Earth was warmer in the past, scientists hope it won't get too warm too quickly. The hidden landscape is quite far from the edge of the ice sheet, giving some hope that it might not melt right away. Yet, the mysteries continue. Scientists found a greatly large lake hidden under the ice, and they believe there's even more waiting to be discovered. 41. What is the Antarctic ice sheet made of? 42.
