In Spain, children and their families are riding bikes to school together in large groups. The program is called “bicibús” or “bike bus”.
Two years ago, children in the Eixample area of Barcelona had a new way to get to school on Fridays—they rode their bikes. A group of five children began biking to school with their parents in September. Soon the group grew to 150 or more.
The bike bus begins around 8: 25 every Friday morning. The path it will follow is always announced ahead of time, so everyone knows where to join. Instead of riding in bike lanes (车道) or on sidewalks, the bicibús takes up the main streets. With music playing and bike bells ringing, the bicibús feels like a party.
It was possible to bike to school in Eixample before, but it wasn’t really safe for kids. There are a few bike lanes, but there are also lots of cars. One of the main roads used by the Eixample bicibús has about 20,000 cars every day. Because these are busy streets, the local police are helping stop traffic by riding in front of the bicibús and behind it. Parents want the city to create wider, kidfriendly bike lanes that are separated from car traffic. They point out that the bicibús also helps shrink pollution.
Recently, pictures and videos of the Eixample bicibús have got a lot of attention on the Internet. Many people point out what a simple idea it is, and how easy it is to get started. Many people join in the activity, and more and more bikes appear in the street. Barcelona isn’t the first bicibús ever. Some bike buses have even been organized in many other areas.

Once upon a time, a happy paper doll had no face. His whole body was perfect, except for his face. However, he had a pencil to draw whatever face he wanted to have. How lucky! He asked everyone, “What’s a perfect face like?”
“One with a big beak (鸟嘴),” answered the birds.
“No. Not one with a beak,” said the trees. “The perfect face has leaves.”
“Forget the beak and the leaves,” shouted the flowers. “A perfect face should have beautiful colors.”
And so everyone he met—animals, plants, the sea, mountain…—told him to draw his face with their features and colors. The doll took all of their suggestions. Then he had a face. However, nobody liked it.
“I only wanted a face that everyone would like.” the doll cried.
A cloud heard his cries and came, “Hello, I think I can help you. As I’m a cloud and do not have a shape, I can make any face you like. What do you think about me changing faces until the one that you like appears?”
The doll again felt hopeful. The cloud made different faces for him. But none was perfect.
“Never mind,” said the doll. “You’ve been a great friend.” He gave the cloud a big hug, and the cloud smiled. Just then, the doll jumped excitedly, “That’s it! It’s a perfect face!”

“Yes, you have! It’s that face you made when I hugged you!”

When I was a little boy, I lived next to David. He liked to plant trees in his large yard on weekends. But the way he planted trees was quite different. He never watered his new trees. I asked him why he did so, and he said that watering trees would spoil them. “If you water the trees, each baby tree will grow weaker and weaker.” said David. He told me that watering these new trees would make roots (树根) shallow (浅), but deep roots were very important for trees. I didn’t understand his words at that time.
Several years after I left home, I came back to visit my parents. When I walked by David’s house, I saw the trees that he planted. They are strong now. I suddenly realize that planting a tree is like raising a child. As a father of two children, I shouldn’t care for them too much. Instead, they should depend on themselves. Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution (贡献) to the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only three. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time, only children from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn even though their families couldn’t afford it. He had about 3, 000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned. “When I am with several people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them.”
He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled. All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”
Confucius is not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. “A person should be strict with himself, but be kind to others,” he said.

During my last year of junior high school, our teacher, Mrs. Debby, gave us a quiz (测试). I was a hard-working student and I did well in all subjects. I finished the questions successfully until I read the last one: What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?
Of course I thought that must have been a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She was short and about 50 years old. She had dark hair. But how could I know her name? I had never talked with her before. In fact, I’d never even thought about talking to her. I looked at my paper and started to feel rather guilty (内疚的). Finally, I handed in my paper, leaving the last one unanswered.
Before the quiz ended, one student asked if the last question would be counted in our grades.
“Of course,” the teacher said. “In your life, you will meet many people. They are all important. They deserve (值得) your attention and care even if all you do is to smile and say hello.”
I’ve never forgotten that lesson. Everyone deserves my attention and I should get to know all of the people who work and live around me. That was, perhaps, the most important lesson in my life. Later, I also learned that the cleaning woman’s first name was Hannah.

It was about 10 years ago, on a cold, gray winter day. The rain soaked (浸湿) my clothes and chilled my bones. I was walking to visit my dad. I knocked on his door and stepped into his house. Warm steam (蒸汽) came from the kitchen. It touched my nose and suddenly I felt like I was 8 years old again. Dad was making Grandma’s special sauce (酱汁).
Growing up, Grandma would make us an Italian meal every Sunday after church. She would slowly cook her spaghetti sauce for hours, throwing in olive oil, salt, sugar, pepper, bay leaves (香叶), and garlic. Then she would drop in potatoes, chicken, meat-balls and sometimes even steak. When it was ready, we would mix it in the spaghetti, serve it on plates, and added cheese on top. It always left our stomachs full, our hearts happy and our house smelling yummy.
I sat down when Dad made me a plate. I felt like a boy again. We talked about those old times and laughed over the memories, both good and bad. And I noticed some-thing too. I didn’t feel cold anymore. My heart was warm, and my spirit was light.
Dad and Grandma have been gone for years now. I still miss them both every single day. Although my daughter and I both know how to make Grandma’s special sauce, we don’t cook it as often as we should. No matter how hard I try, I can never get it quite right. Maybe I am missing an ingredient. Or maybe, it was just the love with which they cooked it that made it so delicious. Either way, this winter, I am going to make it again. I need its warmth. I need its goodness.

But when she tasted the fresh peanuts, she felt happy. “I had never eaten such sweet peanuts before,” she said.
Some of her classmates also learned what kind of fruits and peanuts grow in the ground. “We learned a lot about farming by seeding (播种) them rather than just reading about them in textbooks,” she said.

Every spring, thousands of fish swim through Utrecht, a city in the Netherlands, to find a place to lay their eggs. In this process, they help eat insects and keep the waterways clean. However, there is one problem. They have to wait at the Weerdsluis lock (水闸), which is usually closed at this time of year.

I hope to be the fastest in my class.” said Zhou. Like many teenagers, Zhou has a lot of homework. It usually takes her at least one hour to do it every day. But that is not all her work. She helps her mom cook. On weekends, she helps wash clothes. “I could cook when I was eight. Father said sometimes I cooked better than mom!”
Zhou said she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up. “I watched TV and found that there were many people with AIDS (艾滋病) in Henan. Some are kids. They need help.” said Zhou. Recently, I haven’t been watching the news too much. The daily reports of death, disease, and war have been starting to wear me down. Every time I turn on the television, it seems like the whole world is ready to end.
But today I got a reminder that the world is still okay. I was taking my son to a second-hand store so he could see if he could find some used CDs to add to his music collection. I parked the car and we both put on our masks. I’ve gotten so used to this that it feels like second nature now.
After we went inside, I walked over to the book section to see if I could find something for myself. I looked around and was both surprised and delighted to see a very elderly lady pushing a baby stroller (婴儿车). She told me that the baby was her great-granddaughter. I looked down at the little girl in her tiny pink dress. She was sleeping peacefully. I looked down at her innocent (天真的) face.
Suddenly, she opened her eyes and looked up at me. For a second I thought she was going to cry, but then she seemed to see me smiling behind my mask and smiled back at me.
It was a warm and innocent smile that could light up the whole world.

3.What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?
A.Local police don’t support bicibús.
B.Almost every family in Eixample has a car.
C.It used to be safe to bike to school in Eixample.
D.Many parents aren’t satisfied with the bike lanes at that time.
4.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “shrink”?
A.Come out. B.Cut down. C.Put on. D.Put off.

After knowing that, local ecologist Mark van Heukelum decided to help the fish. He learned that the lock keeper didn’t know when there were fish waiting at the lock. Mark set up an underwater camera at the lock and connected it to a computer and an online doorbell. When someone sees fish waiting to pass, they press the doorbell and the lock keeper will open the lock to let the fish through.
But Mark couldn’t keep watching the doorbell day and night. He reached out to the public to see how many people would like to lend a hand. He was surprised. In its first spring in 2021, the Fish Doorbell was rung more than 100,000 times by people all around the world.
This spring, people’s interest didn’t seem to wane. On the website, the number of visitors was always over 100 and could go as high as 500, depending on the time of day. Politely holding a door open for the friends of humans in the water is a feel-good act of kindness.
