people lived there without wars, until sickness killed most of the population. The most interesting
thing about the island is the 887 stone statues that were found there. The statues look like huge
faces, with big noses and lips. Most of these stone statues are four meters tall, but the biggest one
is ten meters tall. Some could have been twenty-one meters high, but they were destroyed in
earthquakes.Until 1987,many people thought it was impossible for ancient people to move the
heavy stones. Some people said visitors from another planet brought them there. The secret of
Easter Island had finally been solved when some people proved the heavy stones could be moved
with simple equipment.

When"irregardless"was included in Merriam-Webster Dictionary(《韦氏词典》),it caused wide
disagreements." Irregardless" has been used widely since 1795. "We do not make the English
language, and we simply record it," the dictionary's staff wrote in"Words of the Week".
The word's meaning seems to be without "regard". However, Merriam-Webster regards "irregardless"
as"nonstandard" and thinks it has the same meaning as "regardless". According to Merriam-Webster
"Many people find 'irregardless' to be a ridiculous(荒谬的) word, as the 'ir-' usually has negative
meaning;however, in this case it seems to make the meaning of 'regardless' stronger."
“It's not a real word. I don't care what the dictionary says." says Michelle Ray, who teaches
English in Silver Spring, Md. And she says she's still planning to mark "irregardless" as incorrect on
her students' shoolwork.
An American newspaper the Baltimore Sun published the words:"' Irregardless' is too a word;
you just don't understand dictionaries. People get upset about the dictionary because they think it is
the official document(文件). But actually, it's not. It's just lexicographers(词典编纂者)identifying
words that people use and trying to find out how they are spelt, how they are pronounced, what
meanings they have and where they come from.
"The dictionary's recognition doesn't enroll(登记) a word as corect in the English language,"
McIntvre says."It just says this is a word that a lot of people use in English. And here's what we know
about it. So it's a word, though its use is still discouraged in formal writing."
32. What's the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To raise a question.
B. To lead into the topic.
C. To stop the use of "irregardless".
D. To discuss the meaning of "irregardless".
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. "Irregardless"was used widely before 1795.
B. The dictionary's staff make and record the English language.
C. Michelle Ray thinks the use of "irregardless" is correct.
D. People are still not encouraged to use "irregardless" in formal writing
34. What is the attitude of McIntyre to "irregardless" in Merriam-Webster Dictionary?
A. Unsure.
B. Doubtful.
C. Negative.
D. Positive.
35. What can be the best title for the passage?
A."Irregardless" Is Used in Formal Writing
B. Whether"Irregardless" Is a Word or Not
C. "Irregardless" Shouldn't Be Used in Schoolwork
D. Experts Can't Agree on the Meaning of "Irregardless"

It was a cold winter evening, I was scared that my mom would find out that I had lost the
beautiful silver flute( 长笛) she bought me. I felt very sad and I thought that she had given me a big
lecture about how valuable it was and that I had to take good care of it. Now it was missing! And I felt
very upset. I was only ten at the time, so it felt like a huge responsibility. So I didn't dare to tell my
mom about it. I didn't think my mom would pay attention to my flute.
Mom was a soft-spoken woman who never shouted at me, but she would surely have docked(扣
除)my allowance(零花钱) for a year or two in order to pay for it if I couldn't find it and she
discovered that my flute was lost. The worst punishment, though, would have been disappointing her
and being forever regarded as an unreliable(不可靠的) person
As I was in the band, I would take the flute to school twice and bring it home after practice. That
day,I normally remembered collecting it after school and then I rushed through the school gate, I even
said bve to the guard. But when I returned home and wanted to take out my flute for practice, it was
nowhere to be found.
Being afraid to tell anyone, I kept thinking to myself "I'd be in big trouble if I lost it. What
should Ido?"
Just then,I heard my mom's calling,"Sweetie, dinner is ready!"
"Okay, wait a minute, I... am... coming..." I replied as I slowly stepped out of my bedroom,
my mind was still back in the state of searching for my flute.
When having dinner. I could hardly focus with my eves. Although I tried to be calm, my mom still
noticed it.
“What is the matter with you, sweetie?" my mom asked.
Hearing what she had said, I had to tell her the truth.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答
To my surprise,my mom didn't shout at me but stood up to come to me.
When we drove near the school gate, I could see a person standing from a distance.
