Last week, the Los Angeles Unified School District became the largest in US to approve ( 批 准 ) a district-wide cellphone ban. For teachers, this is great news. For many kids, it’s less welcome. Parents, meanwhile, are conflicted, caught between wanting their children to learn without distraction( 分 心 )and worried about the loss of the constant and easy communication to which they’ve grown used.
Smartphones undoubtedly hold back students’ attention to solving for x or close reading a Shakespearean poem. A 2023 study by Common Sense Media revealed that teens check their phones more than 100 times a day on average. On top of the hundreds of notifications lighting up screens and interrupting class lectures, teens now spend 4.8 hours on social media each day. The relationship between screen exposure(使用屏幕)and mental well-being remains unclear, but some studies suggest there is cause for concern.
Yet many parents remain careful of banning phones during the school day. They are afraid that doing so would cut communication between them and their children —not only when they want to organize pickups or drop-offs but also in the event of an emergency.
Schools have managed to function without smartphones for centuries. For concerned parents, equipping their children with traditional cellphones, these days dubbed “dumb-phones,” might be the best option; schools might consider whether selective ( 选择性的) phone bans that permit such devices could work. Or parents could get even more old-fashioned and simply call their school’s office when necessary.
The next question for schools is how to ban cellphones. A popular option is requiring the use of magnetic ( 有 磁 性 的 ) bags that lock in the morning and unlock when the final bell rings, or in the event of an emergency.
When smartphone bans are done right, they can make a big difference. At Bethlehem Central High School near Albany, N.Y., for example, academic progress has improved since applying a ban last fall. Students are less distracted and more tuned into learning. Parents have even said they’re surprised at the success of the newly phone-free school.
24. What does the underlined word “conflicted” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Not knowing what to do. B. Very happy with something.
C. Not good at some things. D. Worried about something.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. How to learn Shakespeare’s plays and poems in school.
B. Screen exposure does make people mentally unhealthy.
C. Heavy usage of smartphones seriously affect students.
D. Students in USA love phones more than ones in China.
26. What schools can do for concerned parents?
A. Ban the parents’ own smartphones.
B. Selectively ban some students’ phones.
C. Allow students carry dumb-phones.
D. Encourage them to shout outside window.
27. Why is Bethlehem Central High School mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. Students there are allowed to use smartphones.
B. To show smartphone bans are beneficial.
C. Parents there are less distracted and surprised.
D. Just to praise the school’s achievements.

Children with strong family connections are associated with a high likelihood of flourishing in life, a study found. “What is different about this study is that it shows that family connection is associated with thriving and not just surviving or avoiding harm,” said lead study author Dr. Robert Whitaker.
Researchers surveyed over 37,000 children in 26 countries. In the study, family connection was determined by a mean score of five categories: care, support, safety, respect, and participation. Flourishing was determined by a mean score of six categories: self-acceptance, purpose in life, positive relations with others, personal growth, environmental mastery and autonomy. The essence of family connection is children feeling that they are accepted and cared for at home, which allows them to learn what their strengths and weaknesses are in a safe environment as they are building their identity,Whitaker said.
Children with the greatest level of family connection were over 49% more likely to flourish compared with those with the lowest level of family connection, according to the study. The highest scores in both family connection and flourishing came from children who said they lived with both parents, had enough food or never had their family worrying about finances. Researchers then controlled the data for families’ poverty levels to remove the effect they might have had on the numbers. After controlling the data, the strength of family connection still impacted how much children flourished.
According to Whitaker, adults have a very powerful influence on the emotional climate in the home, so it’s important to create a space where children feel seen and heard. A great opportunity to strengthen family bonds is around the dinner table. Adults should create an environment where children feel comfortable speaking freely. While they are talking,grown-ups should show that they have a genuine interest in what their children are saying. Silence is also another powerful form of communi cation, Whitaker said. Children and parents spending time together in silence or even doing chores can create a connection.
28. What is the study mainly about?
A. The importance of family connection to children’s survival.
B. The relationship between family connection and children’s success.
C. The factors affecting children’ self-acceptance.
D. The impact of poverty on children’s development.
29. Who are more likely to achieve high scores in both family connection and flourishing?
A. Children who live with a single parent.
B. Children who have enough food and money.
C. Children who know of their strengths and weaknesses.
D. Children who have a whole family and economic security.
30. Which of the following might be an influencing factor in the result?
A. Family income. B. Parents’ educational level.
C. Children’s age and gender. D. The number of people in the family.
31. How can adults strengthen family bonds during mealtime?
A. By showing respect when children are talking. B. By talking about their own problems.
C. By keeping silent when disagreements arise. D. By backing children’s opinions forever.

To adapt to climate change, some flowers are darkening their color to protect themselves from the suns radiation, new research shows.
The study suggests that over the past 75 years, the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flowers
have increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧层). The flowers won’t look any different to humans, but insects consider the higher levels of UV pigments as a darker color, which could be confusing when they try to find out colorful flowers to land on.
The UV-absorbing pigments in flowers work like sunscreen and protect sensitive cells from harmful radiation, Matthew Koski, a plant ecologist at Clemson University, says. He and his team hoped to determine if changes in pigments were a result of environmental change-and if so, what are the plants responding to?
The team collected dried, pressed plants across North America, Australia and Europe. In total, they studied 1, 238 samples from 42 different species dating back to 1941. Then, using a UV-sensitive camera, they photographed flower petals from each species. Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level data from the time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time.
The researchers found that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result of the flowers structure. Flowers with open, exposed pollen had more UV-absorbing pigments when ozone levels were low and radiation was high. But flowers with pollen surrounded by the petal responded to temperatures, not ozone levels.
As climate change continues to intensify, these changes in flowers color can affect plant-insect interactions. When the whole flowers get darker, insects might miss the flowers entirely. “This has a negative influence on plant reproduction,” Koski says.
32. What is the cause of flowers color changing according to the research?
A. The impact of the climate crisis. B. The loss of natural habitats.
C. The harm of nuclear radiation. D. The thickening of the ozone layer.
33. How did Koski’s team get their findings?
A. By collecting photographs of flowers from different species.
B. By analyzing how levels of UV pigments change over time.
C. By collecting abundant samples from various species.
D. By analyzing historic local temperature and ozone level data.
34. What can we learn about the change in pigments?
A. It exists in flowers with exposed pollen only. B. It responds to temperatures and sea levels.
C. It remains the same regardless of species. D. It varies depending on the flowers structure.
35. What is Koski’s attitude toward the change in flowers color?
A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Unclear. D. Optimistic.

Learning how to apologize is similar to learning any new behavior. It may feel awkward and may not be
polished at first. 36 There are several tips that will help you as you learn how to apologize.
First of all, wait until the right time and you are in the right place. Although public apology is often appropriate, discretion ( 谨 慎 ) should be used. 37 Remember, you will be raising a topic that may recall a bad experience or bad feelings. Be respectful as you approach this task.
Be direct and brief in your approach. Acknowledge the fact that injury has occurred and then take responsibility for what happened. Be sincere in expressing your regret and demonstrate your willingness to take ownership of the situation. 38
Even if you follow these steps, be prepared for rejection. Sometimes, the person apologizing has an
expectation that the apology will lead to immediate forgiveness and acceptance. 39 If you think of
the offense (冒犯) as an emotional bruise (瘀伤), think of the healing process as the color changes we see as a bruise heals.
40 Knowing when to keep one’s mouth shut is a virtue. Keeping quiet may be very difficult, as post-apology listening is not easy. We may hear unpleasant observations from another about our own shortcomings. We may hear the expression of anger. One of the ways we let others know we are truly responsible and accountable for our mistakes is by listening to the other party pour out the feelings associated with our actions.

第二节 语法填空(共 10 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分)
The Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve in southwest China has long been known 56 its biodiversity. While the jungles there provide rich sources of food and water, they also pose life threats to animals living there. The local Asian elephants, for instance, might fail 57 (survive) in the wilderness in cases of severe injury or illness if no one came to their rescue in time.
The Asian elephants, 58 are under first-class national protection in China, are 59 (main) found in Yunnan. Wildlife conservation workers have devoted themselves to improving the welfare of 60
species. In November 2008, they established the Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center. The facility now functions as a shelter for wild Asian elephants across the region. With the help of a
61 (profession) elephant caregiver team, elephants 62 (save) by the Center have recovered well. Every day, the caregivers stay with the elephants for more than ten hours, 63 (monitor) their health and bringing them to the jungles so that they can re-familiarize themselves with the wild.
What the elephant caregivers are doing 64 (be) a microcosm ( 缩 影 ) of China’s environmental
commitment. Through the country’s increasing conservation efforts, the wild Asian elephant population in Yunnan 65 (rise) from about 150 to over 300 in the last 30 years.

第二节(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a single mother in my 30s, living a poor life with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make ends meet.
One day, I headed downtown for an interview knowing for sure I wouldn’t receive an offer. I sat down in
the streetcar, and there against the seat I found a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold scrolls (卷轴形装饰), among which there was a name carved.
On impulse I determined to find the owner myself. I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain and thankfully
opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name. I found it immediately and called it, waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
“Yes,” she said in surprise, with extreme excitement. “It’s my umbrella. It was stolen a year ago.”
I was so thrilled that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to the woman’s small house. She took the umbrella with tearful eyes, explaining in a choked (哽咽的) voice that the umbrella had been given to her by her parents, now dead. She was so happy that I felt it would be wrong to accept a reward, so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard. I could only obtain temporary employment, for a small salary. What was worse, I had lost my job just before Christmas, when I had only fifteen dollars left. Unless something unexpected happened, I would be homeless in January, with no food and no job. I felt nothing but coldness and darkness.
注意:续写词数应为 150 左右。
Para.1: Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, saying that it must be Santa Claus.
Para.2: A note attached to one package caught my eye.
