The scene in the stands at Roland Garros’s Court Philippe-Chatrier was dotted with red banners, adding a glow to the already orange y air spreading the red clay court.
There were hundreds of Chinese waving flags to support Qinwen Zheng, 21, who would soon take gold by defeating Croatia’s Donna Vedic in the women’s singles tennis final.
As she lay down on the dirt, eyes skyward and fists extended into the Paris haze, the win’s gravity seemed to register: This was China’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in this sport. When talking about the Olympics, Zheng said, “I treated the Games differently — the emotion, the fight, the mentality. If you asked me to stay three more hours to fight, I could do it.”
Born in 2002, Zheng started playing tennis at age seven. At age eight, she moved alone for better coaching. Since adolescence, she has deeply admired Chinese athletes, such as the tennis star Li Na, who joined the 2008 Beijing Games, and the runner Liu Xiang, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Games.
“It was really tough,” Zheng said, looking back at those early days. “My mom used to come visit on weekends. When she left, I would hold her leg and cry. After 13, she decided to stay with me full-time to let me have better growth and care. After that, it got easier. And we moved to Europe when I was 17.”
In Paris, Zheng performed exceptionally well on her road to gold, including toppling world number one Iga Swiatek. “With Iga, I was clear,” Zheng said. “I know why I lost to her before. I played rushed, made too many unforced errors, and wanted to hit faster than her. I wanted to prove my power. But in these Games, I didn’t think like this.”
Zheng is conscious, too, of the effects that her milestone achievement in Paris will have. As we wrapped up our chat, she said, softly: “I was reading comments last night and some of them were talking about inspiration, and this makes me feel proud. If you watch my tennis and it brings you some extra strength in your life, that will make me happy.”
4. According to the passage, which is TRUE about Qinwen Zheng?
A. She considered all tennis games to be equally important.
B. She felt confident to live alone at her early days of training.
C. She secured the first Chinese Olympic tennis championship.
D. As a teenager, she wanted to go beyond other Chinese athletes.
5. What does the underlined word “toppling” in the 6th paragraph mean?
A. Challenging. B. Defeating. C. Discouraging. D. Declining.
6. Which words can best describe Qinwen Zheng?
A. Competent and idealistic. B. Creative and independent.
C. Sincere and ambitious. D. Strong-willed and reflective.
7. What can we infer from Qinwen Zheng’s words in the last paragraph?
A. She feels delighted to read numerous comments on her match.
B. She expects her achievement to motivate more people.
C She takes pride in attaining the Olympic gold medal.
D. She hopes that her achievement will earn her fame.

Science is always seen as hard-core and hard to understand. But could you imagine hundreds of people being attracted by the cover of a science magazine?
The achievement was completed after Wang Yixi and his team made the cover of an October issue of Structure, a US-based Cell Press journal. The cover shows a Chinese ink painting that vividly shows the process in which a special enzyme (酶) involved in the biosynthesis (生物合成) of an important organic compound is activated―the latest breakthrough by a Chinese scientific research team. Another one of his popular works that carries distinctive Chinese elements is a composite image, describing a scientist as the folk goddess Nyuwa, carrying her newly discovered compound to fill a crack in the sky.
While studying chemistry at university, Wang Yixi often came across an experimental preparation process that he had to explain, but the amount of text was too large and abstract. As he had been interested in drawing, and related software like Photoshop, he decided to turn his graphics into a fine art. He went on to study 3D graphics software in order to better display the microscopic structures in his field and improve the presentation of his papers.
It didn’t take long before his classmates and professors noticed his talents and asked him to help them with their papers. By word of mouth, more people beat a path to Wang’s door and were willing to pay for his service. Over the past four years, Wang and his team have come up with more than 10,000 visual works for academic papers across a variety of fields, many of which have made their way to the world’s top academic journals, including Nature, Science and Cell.
“Every scientific paper is innovative, and graphics are an essential part of scientific papers,” Wang says, adding that what he tries to achieve is an explanation of models or methods, to showcase experimental results, visually process data or compare differences among experiments.
8. What play a special role in Wang’s works?
A. Fairytales. B. Chinese elements. C. Rich colors. D. Complex structures.
9. What can we learn about Wang Yixi from paragraph 3?
A. He preferred painting to Chemistry. B. He developed useful mapping software.
C. He had an active mind to solve problem. D. He had trouble conducting his experiment.
10. How does Wang make abstract papers easily understood?
A. By visualizing them vividly. B. By showing them accurately.
C. By explaining them in detail. D. By constructing them uniquely
11. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The power of art B. Dilemmas of science
C Mysteries of Chemistry D. Inspiration from science

Scientists have created a new tool that can know what you mean. It works by using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program to translate brain activity into words. Scientists say the program could help people who can’t speak because of a brain injury.
To record brain activity without surgery (外科手术) , scientists used an fMRI machine, which can record the activity of the brain as it happens. To translate these recordings into words, scientists used an AI tool called GPT-l that predicts which word is most likely to come next, based on the information that came before. Scientists first trained GPT-1 on lots of stories people had told about their lives. Next, they trained GPT-1 to make connections between brain scans and spoken words. The testing was done on three human volunteers. Each person spent sixteen hours in an fMRI machine listening to stories. The machine created pictures showing which parts of their brain were active. GPT-1 then used these recordings to make connections between the ideas in the stories and the brain activity of the listeners.
Then came the test. The scientists played a brand new story. GPT-1 was only given recordings of the people’s brain activity. But the words that GPT-1 predicted were very similar to the words in the story that the people were listening to. The words weren’t exactly the same, but they often carried the same meaning.
For example, when a person was listening to a story about a person who didn’t have a driver’s license, the program came up with this, “She has not even started to learn to drive yet.”
The scientists say that GPT-1 is the first AI program to turn what people are thinking into words without brain surgery. The system isn’t something that is available outside the lab today, mainly because of the size and cost of fMRI machines. But in the future, a similar method could help people who have lost the ability to speak because of an injury or disease.
12. Why were the volunteers asked to listen to stories for 16 hours?
A. To produce brain activity. B. To awaken their curiosity.
C. To predict the new stories. D. To remember the words.
13. Which of the following best describes the test result?
A. Unexpected B. Successful. C. Discouraging. D. Difficult.
14. What can be learned about this AI program?
A. It’ll be put on the market soon. B. It hasn’t been put to use.
C It reduces users’ financial worry. D. It’ll make patients learn to talk.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The fMRI Machine Is Used for Brain Surgery
B. We Don’t Have to Worry About Brain Injury
C. GPT-l Lets Humans Speak from Their Heart
D. Scientists Train AI to Read Human Thoughts

And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.
Create psychological distance from yourself
One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Fit your conversation to your goal
___19___. Instructional self- talk like“ shoulders back” or“ keep the left arm straight” works to improve technique. ___20___
Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”

B. Make as many friends as possible
C. Using instructional language is appropriate
D. Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals

My political career in the Student Union(SU)began by throwing frisbees (飞盘) on the campus lawn. I would throw a frisbee to someone I didn’t know and they would throw it to someone they didn’t know. Before long, we had built a community of people who met every day at lunch to throw frisbees.
Besides frisbees, the group decided to climb the mountain near our campus. When we reached the peak, it felt like we were at summer camp. We laughed, danced and told jokes. It was totally fun. While playing like little children in the cool mountain air, we all decided to do it again the following week. Our motto (座右铭) was “Bring a Friend” . We started out with a small group of hikers. But as the word spread, the number of participants increased. We made it a rule to climb the mountain every weekend. All of us were passionate about the fantastic experience, which we were looking forward to.
One day on campus, I decided to throw my frisbee to some strangers, run over and invite them to climb the mountain. Much to my surprise, a girl sitting in a wheelchair got hold of it. Her name was Grace. I asked her if she had ever been to the top of the mountain. She said she hadn’t. Holding the wheelchair tightly, she hung down her head in awkward silence. Then she told me that she had suffered from lung disease when she was young and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a day. So, it was impossible for her to move without help. Fortunately, things got better.
With continuous efforts and treatment, she managed to live on her own with the assistance of the wheelchair: I told her that my friends and I would carry her if she were up for it. On hearing what I said, she refused without hesitation, adding that it would be a bother to carry her. But I tried my best to persuade her to come along with us by talking about the interesting experiences.

C. She takes pride in attaining the Olympic gold medal.
D. She hopes that her achievement will earn her fame.
C 5. B 6. D 7. B

9 What can we learn about Wang Yixi from paragraph 3?
C. Mysteries of Chemistry D.

13 Which of the following best describes the test result?
A. Unexpected B. Successful. C. Discouraging. D. Difficult.
14. What can be learned about this AI program?
A. It’ll be put on the market soon. B. It hasn’t been put to use.
C. It reduces users’ financial worry. D. It’ll make patients learn to talk.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The fMRI Machine Is Used for Brain Surgery
B. We Don’t Have to Worry About Brain Injury
C. GPT-l Lets Humans Speak from Their Heart
D. Scientists Train AI to Read Human Thoughts

根据第三段“The scientists played a brand new story. GPT-1 was only given recordings of the people’s brain activity. But the words that GPT-1 predicted were very similar to the words in the story that the people were listening to. The words weren’t exactly the same, but they often carried the same meaning.(科学家们演绎了一个全新的故事。GPT-1只获得了受试者大脑活动的记录。但GPT-1预测的单词与人们听的故事中的单词非常相似。这些词并不完全相同,但它们往往具有相同的含义)”以及第四段“For example, when a person was listening to a story about a person who didn’t have a driver’s license, the program came up with this, ‘She has not even started to learn to drive yet.’(例如,当一个人在听一个关于一个没有驾照的人的故事时,这个节目就会出现这样的情况:‘她甚至还没有开始学习开车。’)”
根据最后一段“The system isn’t something that is available outside the lab today, mainly because of the size and cost of fMRI machines. (该系统目前还无法在实验室之外使用,主要是因为fMRI机器的尺寸和成本)”可知,目前,该项目还未投入使用。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Scientists have created a new tool that can know what you mean. It works by using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program to translate brain activity into words. Scientists say the program could help people who can’t speak because of a brain injury.(科学家们发明了一种新工具,可以知道你的意思。
Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice. ___16___. Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.
Listen critically to your inner critic
In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors. ___17___. And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.
Create psychological distance from yourself
One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion. ___18___.
Fit your conversation to your goal
___19___. Instructional self- talk like“ shoulders back” or“ keep the left arm straight” works to improve technique. Motivational self-talk such as“ you’ve got this” or“ keep going” can help with confidence, strength, or endurance. It’s important to be aware of the type of self-talk you are using and make sure it aligns with your goals and needs.
___20___
Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”
A. Treat yourself as a friend
B. Make as many friends as possible
C. Using instructional language is appropriate
D. Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals
E. So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself
F. Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed
G. This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat
F 17. E 18. G 19. D 20. A
根据空前句“Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice.(也许你可能听到了内心训斥的声音)”提到你可能从内心的声音中听到了长时间的数落;空后“Here are several ways to change your self- talk script and to use your inner voices to perform better.(这里有几个方法来改变你的自我对话脚本,用你内心的声音来表现得更好。)” F项中的“ negative comments in your head”与空前句中的“ an earful from your inner voice”相呼应,且其中的“ make it difficult for you to succeed”与空后句中的“ perform better”相呼应。 因此,F选项“Often, negative comments in your head make it difficult for you to succeed(通常,你头脑中的负面评论会让你很难成功)”衔接上下文。故选F。
根据后文“And when your inner voices start to fill with words of frustration and discouragement, pause the conversation as you consider ways to change it.(当你内心的声音开始充满沮丧和沮丧时,暂停谈话,考虑改变它的方法)”中提取的关系词“And”可知,设空处与空后句构成并列关系。空前句“In high- pressure situations, self- talk is often critical. Instead of thinking deliberately and logically, our inner voices are caused by emotion. That influences everything from how we talk to ourselves to our behaviors.(在压力很大的情况下,自言自语往往是至关重要的。我们内心的声音是由情感引起的,而不是有意识地、合乎逻辑地思考。这影响了从我们如何自言自语到我们的行为)”与内心的声音的消极影响相关,空后句与应对内心的声音的做法有关。根据设空处与空后句的并列关系可知,设空处锁定在E项。E项还与空前句构成因果关系,且该项中的“critically”是对小标题中的“critically”和段首句中的“critical”的原词及同根词复现。E选项“So your first step is to listen critically to what you are saying to yourself(因此,你的第一步是批判性地倾听你对自己说的话)”符合语境。故选E。
根据空前内容“One effective way to manage stress is to create psychological distance. This can be achieved by using second- or third- person pronouns when referring to the situation. Asking yourself,“ Why are you feeling so stressed?” is one way to create the psychological distance you need to regulate emotion.(管理压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离。这可以通过使用第二人称或第三人称代词来实现。问自己:“为什么你感到这么有压力?”是一种创造心理距离的方法,你需要这种距离来调节情绪)”提到应对压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离,并举例说明“问自己‘为什么你感到压力如此之大?’”是一种创造调节情绪所需的心理距离的方法。因此,设空处位于段尾,应能承接上文,与空前句提到的创造心理距离的方法相关,G选项“This way you might find your task an interesting challenge instead of a threat(这样你会发现你的任务是一个有趣的挑战而不是威胁)”说明了使用该方法的好处,且其中的“ This way”指代的正是空前句中的“Asking yourself, “Why are you feeling so stressed?””。
因此,设空处也应与此相关,故将答案锁定在D选项“Different types of self- talk work best for specific goals(不同类型的自言自语对特定的目标效果最好)”,其中的“goals”是对小标题中的“goal”的同词复现。故选D。
根据本段内容“Demeaning or negative self- talk is only going to increase your stress and hold you back. Instead, speak compassionately to yourself — just as you would to a friend. Recreate negative messages to include positive content. “I am not good at this.” can be changed to“ Relax. You are prepared for this.” “I don’t know what to say.” can be replaced by“ Remember to smile and ask good questions.”(贬低或消极的自言自语只会增加你的压力,阻碍你前进。相反,你应该同情地对自己说话——就像对朋友说话一样。重新创造负面信息以包含积极内容。“我不擅长这个。可以改成“放轻松。”你已经准备好了。”“我不知道该说什么。可以用“记得微笑,问好问题”来代替)”可知,本段建议人们不要进行贬低性的或消极的自我对话,而要像对待朋友那样对自己说积极的话,A选项“Treat yourself as a friend(把自己当成朋友)”能很好地概括本段主旨。故选A。

On the downhilt path, Grace asked me why not run for the SU election.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Having thought for a while, Grace still refused my offer. Looking at her depressed and embarrassed expression, I didn’t want to quit persuading her. I showed her some pictures that were taken during our trip. She smiled, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Ultimately, I made it. On that appointed day, I, together with several friends, offered continuous assistance to her. With our joint efforts, we made it to the top of the mountain and admired the fantastic scenery. A sense of excitement took hold of her, tears rolling down her cheeks like broken pearls. She was so grateful to us and we became close friends.
On the downhill path, Grace asked me why not run for the SU election. However, I didn’t have enough courage to run for it. Knowing I was in a dilemma, Grace had a sincere communication with me. “So kind and friendly are you that you helped me to enjoy the beautiful scenery and plan the weekend activity carefully. I am firmly convinced that you are capable of the work in the SU,” she said in a gentle voice. Inspired by her encouragement, I made a resolution to have a try. Having made full preparations, I was chosen chairman of the SU, which was beyond my expectations. Indeed, it is the mutual trust and help between friends that do make a great difference to us.
