As a businesswoman in her city, Belinda has founded a high- tech company. Also as an author and a philanthropist (慈善家) who is running a private charitable organization, the best and most difficult parts of her job are the same: talking to people. This “on the ground” work is her favorite part of being a philanthropist, but hearing stories of sadness is difficult.
She has been working in this field for about 15 years. She really cares about lifting up girls and women. She thinks that when girls and women can step into their full power in society, society changes for the better for everybody. So she’s very passionate about making sure girls and women have the opportunity to shine.
Belinda has a full schedule for each workday. If she’s in her company, a typical day for her involves taking meetings in the office. Sometimes, it’s reviewing strategies. Sometimes, it’s distributing (分配) resources. If she’s out of her company, it’s often meeting with her partners, trying to discuss how to best support their initiatives and put more money or voice their opinion behind something. Or, sometimes, it’s talking to families to understand their realities.
Belinda’s background in computer science gives her a “logical mindset”. She thinks that numbers can help us see things in the world. So she’s a data focus. If she can’t explain or understand something, she’ll ask for the numbers to get a better understanding of the situation.
For young people who want to pursue a career helping people, or working for a cause they care about, but don’t know where to start, her advice is to take the first step today to do something you’ re passionate about, whether it’s working at a food bank or volunteering at a library. There’s huge power in them thinking about their time, their knowledge, and where they can give back.
4. What is Belinda’s favorite as a philanthropist?
A. Organizing the donating activities. B. Hearing other people’s sad stories.
C. Communicating with different people. D. Writing articles about charity activities.
5. How does Belinda help women and girls?
A. By inspiring them to use their abilities. B. By giving them more money.
C. By teaching them to make strategies. D. By inspiring them to care for others.
6. What is paragraph 3 centered on about Belinda?

Dogs have been humans’ best friends for thousands of years, and their ability to understand us goes more than just following orders. Dogs are really good at understanding how humans feel. They’ve learned to pick up on words and facial expressions from humans. A recent study has shown that dogs can actually smell human stress and respond (回应) to it in ways that suggest a close relationship with us humans. This interesting discovery throws light on how deeply close our lives have become with our dog friends.
So, can dogs really smell stress? The answer is yes! Researchers at the University of Bristol did a study where they found that dogs can sense stress through a chemical called cortisol (皮质醇) in our sweat (汗). This ability allows them to respond emotionally to human stress.
In the study, 18 dogs and their owners took part, along with 11 volunteers who didn’t know the dogs. These volunteers went through public speaking and took tests of solving difficult math problems without any preparation. Their worry made more cortisol appear in their sweat. When the dogs smelled this stressed sweat. they felt less curious and showed less interest in a food bowl in an uncertain position, as if they thought there was no food in those bowls. It seems that dogs can really feel the stress of humans and their own moods can be affected, too. This shows that humans and dogs have a very deep connection, where emotions can spread between us like a wave.
Then how did dogs develop such ability to sense stress? Well, it might be because sensing stress helped dogs survive in the past. If they could tell when another member of their group was worried and stressed, they knew they might be at risk. As Zoe Parr-Cortes, lead study author and a Ph. D. student at Bristol Veterinary School, said, “Being able to sense stress from another member of the pack was likely beneficial.”
8. What does the recent study tell us about dogs?
A. Their long history of development. B. Their various roles in human history.
C. Their ability to learn human language. D. Their deeper connection with humans.
9. What did the volunteers need to do in the study?
A. Calm dogs down. B. Test their own ability.
C. Experience stress. D. Collect their own sweat.
10. Why might dogs have developed the ability to sense stress?
A. To help them hunt for more food. B. To warn them of possible dangers.
C. To guide them to respond to human orders. D. To allow them to connect with their group.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Dogs’ Unbelievable Ability to Sense Human Stress
B The Development of the Human- Dog Relationship
C. Humans Sense Stress Through Their Beloved Dogs
D. Dogs’ Stress Having an Influence on Human Behavior
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. A

细节理解题。根据第一段中“A recent study has shown that dogs can actually smell human stress and respond (回应) to it in ways that suggest a close relationship with us humans. This interesting discovery throws light on how deeply close our lives have become with our dog friends.( 最近的一项研究表明,狗狗实际上可以闻到人类的压力,并以与人类关系密切的方式做出反应。这个有趣的发现揭示了我们与狗朋友的生活有多亲密。)”可知,最近的研究显示狗能闻到人类的压力并以与人类亲近的方式回应,这表明狗与人类之间有着更深的联系。因此,该研究告诉我们的是狗与人类之间的深层联系。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“These volunteers went through public speaking and took tests of solving difficult math problems without any preparation. Their worry made more cortisol appear in their sweat. When the dogs smelled this stressed sweat. they felt less curious and showed less interest in a food bowl in an uncertain position, as if they thought there was no food in those bowls.
根据最后一段中“Well, it might be because sensing stress helped dogs survive in the past. If they could tell when another member of their group was worried and stressed, they knew they might be at risk.(嗯,这可能是因为感知压力在过去帮助狗生存了下来。如果他们能分辨出小组中的另一个成员何时感到担忧和压力,他们就知道自己可能处于危险之中。)”可知,狗可能发展出感知压力的能力是为了警告他们可能的危险。如果狗能够察觉到他们的群体中的另一个成员感到担心和压力,他们就知道自己可能处于危险之中。因此,狗发展出这种能力是为了保护自己。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“A recent study has shown that dogs can actually smell human stress and respond (回应) to it in ways that suggest a close relationship with us humans. One popular tool to help people understand their influence on climate change is a carbon footprint calculator (碳足迹计算器). There are many of these calculators online. You can enter details like what type of transportation you use to go to work, how often you eat red meat, and if you wash your clothes in cold water.
But some people think that focusing on your carbon footprint is not very useful. Instead, a new idea called the climate shadow (阴影) has become popular. This idea was first introduced by a writer named Emma Pattee from Portland, Oregon. The climate shadow looks at all of a person's choices and their influence on the planet. The bigger the shadow, the more positive influence a person has on the planet.
Pattee explained her idea, “Your climate shadow is like a dark shape that follows you everywhere. It counts not only how much air conditioning you use and how much gas your car uses, but also how you vote, how many children you have, where you work, how you invest your money, how much you talk about climate change, and whether your words make people feel urgent, indifferent, or in denial about climate change.”
For example, if you put solar panels (太阳能电池板) on your roof, your carbon footprint might get smaller. But your climate shadow would get bigger if you talk to your neighbors about your choice. Even just having solar panels on your roof can influence your neighbors to get their own. Studies show that people are more likely to install solar panels if their neighbors have them.
In other words, the climate shadow idea encourages actions that inspire others. Your climate shadow grows when your actions, even unknowingly, motivate others to take positive steps for the planet.
12. Who introduced the idea of the climate shadow?
A. An environmental organization. B. A government organization.
C. Emma Pattee. D. A group of scientists from Portland.
13. What does climate shadow focus more on compared with carbon footprint?
A. The practical result. B. The use of energy.
C. The scientific meaning. D. The social influence.
14. What does the underlined word “install” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Replace. B. Fix. C. Sell. D. Improve.
15. What is the best title for this text?
A. Understanding Your Climate Shadow B. Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
C. The Benefits of Solar Panels D. How to Use a Carbon Footprint Calculator

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“In other words, the climate shadow idea encourages actions that inspire others. Your climate shadow grows when your actions, even unknowingly, motivate others to take positive steps for the planet.(换句话说,气候阴影的想法鼓励了激励他人的行动。当你的行动,甚至在不知不觉中,激励他人为地球采取积极措施时,你的气候阴影就会增加。)”可知,相比于碳足迹概念,气候阴影这个概念聚焦于人们的行为对其他人的社会影响。故选D。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词所在句“if their neighbors have them(如果他们的邻居有的话)”可知,如果邻居有太阳能电池板,人们更有可能安装太阳能电池板,所以 install 意为“安装”。故选B。

Walter Carr never dreamed his 20-mile journey would end up changing his life. Walter Carr is a young man from Alabama who faced a tough situation on the night before his first day at a new job. He had just been hired by Bellhop, a moving company, and was eager to make a great impression.
However, things took an unexpected turn when his car broke down, leaving him in trouble. The job site was located 20 miles away in Pelham, and Walter, without any other choice, made a bold (大胆的) decision.
Walter was determined not to miss his first day, no matter what. Instead of calling in to explain his situation or simply giving up, he decided to walk the entire 20 miles to his new workplace.
It was a challenging choice, but Walter’s mindset was clear: He had a job to do, and he wasn’t going to let anything stand in his way. With a quick sleep to prepare himself, he set out around midnight, walking the dark, empty streets to reach his destination.
After a few hours, he crossed paths with a police officer who was patrolling(巡逻) the area. Curious about what Walter was doing out on foot so early in the morning, the officer stopped him to ask. When Walter explained his situation, the officer was moved by his determination. Instead of just sending him on his way, the officer decided to help. He bought Walter breakfast and then offered him a ride for the rest of the journey. By the time they reached Pelham, it was still early.
Walter and the officer arrived at the home of the Lamey family, who were scheduled for a move that day. The officer introduced Walter to the Lameys, explaining how he had met this “nice kid” who had walked 20 miles just to get to work. Jenny Hayden Lamey, the homeowner, was immediately impressed by Walter’s determination and perseverance (毅力).

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
She invited him inside, suggesting he take a rest before the rest of his workmates arrived. But Walter politely declined. He was there to work, and that’s exactly what he intended to do. When the rest of the moving team eventually showed up, they were equally impressed by Walter’s story. His determination to get to work against such difficulties had already set him apart as someone truly exceptional. Word of Walter’s story soon spread, reaching Luke Marklin, the CEO of Bellhops.
Moved by Walter’s story, the CEO Luke Marklin decided to meet with him personally. He wanted to recognize the young man’s incredible commitment and determination. During their meeting, Marklin commended Walter for his perseverance. Then, in a surprising and generous gesture, Marklin handed Walter the keys to his own personal vehicle, a 2014 SUV. “I’d like to give you this car right here,” Marklin said. Walter was stunned — the gift of a car was more than he could have imagined. His hard work and determination had not only paid off but had done so in a way that was beyond his wildest dreams. The story of Walter is a powerful reminder of what can happen when someone refuses to give up in the face of adversity.

C Communicating with different people. D. Writing articles about charity activities.
5. How does Belinda help women and girls?
A. By inspiring them to use their abilities. B. By giving them more money.
C. By teaching them to make strategies. D. By inspiring them to care for others.
6. What is paragraph 3 centered on about Belinda?
A. Her profession in the field. B. Her partners’ support.
C. Her challenges in charity. D. Her daily work tasks.
7. What is Belinda’s advice to young people about their career?
A. Build a library to give back to society. B. Make a difference to their community.
C. Choose a job related to food or banking. D. Have a great dream and try to achieve it.

C. The scientific meaning. D. The social influence.
14. What does the underlined word “install” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Replace. B. Fix. C. Sell. D. Improve.
15. What is the best title for this text?
A. Understanding Your Climate Shadow B. Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
C. The Benefits of Solar Panels D. How to Use a Carbon Footprint Calculator
