B On March 3, 1887, the lives of two amazing women were changed forever when Anne Sullivan, a poor university graduate, arrived at the home of the wealthy Keller family to teach their six-year-old daughter Helen. It was a difficult job as Helen was unable to see, hear or speak because of illness. Anne had been suggested to the Kellers by her university professor, a close friend of Mr. Keller. Before she arrived, Anne had expected her new pupil to be a quiet, weak child. But Helen was nothing like that. When Anne first walked through the Kellers’ door, the energetic Helen nearly knocked her over in her hurry to feel Anne’s face, clothing and bag. Helen was used to visitors bringing her sweets, and angrily tried to open Anne’s case to take her candy. But Anne calmed her down by allowing Helen to play with her watch. So began one of the most successful student teacher relationships in history. Anne Sullivan was only twenty years old when she began teaching Helen. She had to not only teach the child all the usual school subjects, but also control Helen’s sometimes wild behaviour. Her well-meaning parents allowed Helen to do as she liked at home. Realizing that such an environment was unsuitable for learning, Anne requested that she and Helen live in a small house nearby. As soon as Helen began learning, it became clear that she was especially intelligent. She quickly learned to read and write, and by the age of ten she could also speak. In 1900, Helen started studying at Radcliffe University, and graduated first in her class in 1904. She was the very first blind and deaf person to get a university degree. How did she do it? Anne Sullivan read all of Helen’s books and then signed the information into her hand. Anne remained at Helen’s side until her death in 1936. Helen became a world-famous writer, and fought for disabled people’s rights until her death on Jun. 1, 1968. 23. What surprised Anne most about Helen when they first met? A. How intelligent Helen was. B. How forceful Helen was. C. The way Helen’s parents treated her. 24. According to the passage, Helen’s parents _______. A. allowed her to do as she wished B. did not spend much time with her C. cared little about her education 25. Which of the following is NOT true about Helen’s university studies? A. She was greatly helped by Anne. B. She was the best student in her class. C. She was able to graduate in three years. 26. According to the passage, both Anne and Helen _______. A. died in their 60s B. were well educated C. came from rich families C Birds don’t like eating plastic(塑料). But more seabirds are eating plastic waste in the world’s seas and oceans. Why? It is possibly because the plastic waste smells like a kind of seabirds’ food, according to a new study published in the journal Science Advances. Matthew Savoca is the study’s lead author at the University of California, Davis. “Animals usually have a reason for the decisions they make,” he said. “If we want to truly understand why animals are eating plastic in the ocean, we have to think about how animals find food.” The study found that plastic waste easily gathers algae(海藻) on the water. Together they give off a smell that is very similar to the krill(磷虾) that many seabirds feed on. It could explain why certain birds — including albatrosses(信天翁) and shearwaters(海鸥类飞鸟) — are nearly six times more likely to eat plastic than other birds. They usually find food by their sense of smell. A study last year showed that about 8 million tons(吨) of plastic enters the oceans every year. It is harmful not only to the environment but also to the seabirds. Birds and other sea animals, such as turtles and fish, eat plastic. It can badly hurt the organs(器官) of the animals. Some birds even mistakenly feed their babies plastic instead of food. Scientists hope this study can raise the alarm about plastics in our oceans and help save the seabirds. 27. How did Matthew Savoca and his team carry out the research? A. By studying some seabirds’ brains. B. By learning how seabirds find food. C. By tasting plastics by themselves. 28. What animals are more likely to eat plastic than others? A. Those who find food by smelling. B. Those who have poor eyesight. C. Those who use their sense of hearing to find food. 29. According to Paragraph 4, which of the following is NOT true? A. The plastic may hurt the organs of some sea animals. B. Some birds even feed their babies plastic by mistake. C. A study showed nearly 8 million tons of rubbish enters the oceans every year. 30. What is the main idea of the text? A. To introduce a new study of making plastic. B. To explain why some sea animals eat plastic. C. To solve the problem of plastic pollution. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,每个选项仅使用一次。 Do you have trouble sitting through a movie without checking your phone? Bungee jumping, snow skating, Parkour and surfing are very popular extreme sports, but mountain climbing might be the first. In 1985, two British young men, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates became the first west faces to climb the 6344-meter Siula Grande in the Andes(安第斯山脉). On the way down, Simpson fell and broke his leg, and then he slipped(滑) down and lost connection with his friend. Yates had to get for help. Simpson fell more than 100 feet and landed on a bridge of ice. Finally he crawled(爬) for three days without food or water until he reached the camp. On April 26, 2003, when Aron Rolston was climbing alone in Utah, his arm was caught under a 360-kilo rock and he couldn’t move. After five days of waiting for help, the 28-year-old American ran out of water and finally he cut off half his right arm with a small knife to free himself. He also bandaged(包扎) himself in order not to lose too much blood.
