(Text 1)
W: Tom, look at this amazing wood carver called Livio de Marchi. Some of his works are absolutely wonderful. One of his famous pieces is a huge pumpkin drawn by four horses.
M: Actually, he’s my favorite artist. He inspired me to create this lovely carved wooden bear.
(Text 2)
W: I’m reading a book about David Beckham’s life. It talks a lot about when David was young.
M: I didn’t know he’d written a book about himself!
W: The book that I’m reading is written by his dad. It surprised me when I knew he’d done so much work to help children.
(Text 3)
W: Have you followed Elon Musk on social media?
M: Of course. He uses it as a place where he discusses his future plans. Instead of being formal, he has a good sense of humor and knows how to have fun. But some people take it seriously and attack him.
(Text 4)
W: So, Jim, you’ve achieved huge success in the music business. How did this happen?
M: You see, a popular talent show host saw my video online, loved it and his thousands of followers then watched it. So that helped!
(Text 5)
M: Laura, you’ve just been selected to play chess for the national team. Many congratulations! Everyone says that you’re a natural for chess. Do you think so?
W: Well, I’ve always believed that practice makes perfect. I play chess with my father every day.
(Text 6)
M: Did you get a part in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, Sarah?
W: Yes. I’m going to be Juliet.
M: Juliet! That’s the main part. You must be really excited. So who’s going to be your Romeo? Don’t tell me — it’s Tim Lewis?
W: No. It’s going to be Paul Smith. Tim tried for the part, but Miss Rose chose Paul. Miss Rose offered him another big part, but he just walked out and said he didn’t want to be in the play.
M: Oh dear! Maybe I should go and talk to him to see if I can cheer him up.
(Text 7)
M: What’s the matter? Are you having trouble?
W: Yes. I’m supposed to have three new ideas for tomorrow morning’s meeting. But now I’m stuck. I’ve been thinking for an hour — nothing! I have to stay up all night.
M: Perhaps you need a different approach. I was reading something the other day about Einstein and his unique approach to thinking.
W: I’m an editor at a gardening magazine, not a scientist. But I think Einstein’s creative way of thinking will help me get a good idea, thank you.
(Text 8)
M: This article is about famous people who didn’t find their perfect careers until they were in their thirties.
W: Like who?
M: J. K. Rowling, for example. She was working as a researcher and secretary when she first had the idea for Harry Potter. She was 25 at the time, but it took her another seven years to finish writing the first novel.
W: Yes, I remember reading that somewhere.
M: Speaking of authors, there was the famous Irish writer James Joyce. After graduating from college, he traveled to Paris to pursue medical studies. He returned to Ireland when his mother became ill. Although he started writing early, he got his first book published when he was 32.
W: They all knew what they wanted to be. But I’ve got no idea.
M: Don’t worry too much. I decided to study medicine at university after I met the careers advisor. Why don’t you get some advice from him, too?
(Text 9)
W: Acting can be quite dangerous, can’t it?
M: Yes, it can. Most actors have a double, who looks like the real actor and does the dangerous scenes. But there are some famous actors who do the dangerous action scenes themselves. Jackie Chan is a famous example.
W: Jackie Chan? The famous Chinese actor?
M: Yes, once he made a poster with a list of all his injuries. Let’s see. It says here that he’s broken his nose, not once, not twice, but four times!
W: Has he ever had a really serious accident?
M: Yes. He jumped down from a wall to a tree. He didn’t catch the tree and hit his head on a rock. He nearly died.
W: That’s terrible! It’s amazing that he hasn’t stopped making films!
M: I don’t think he’ll ever stop. He’s a positive role model for us actors.
(Text 10) M
Here’re three ways to experience the Jane Austen lifestyle in England. The Jane Austen Festival, held in Bath in September, is a popular hangout for super fans. Ten days of Austen-inspired events include guided walks, concerts, dance classes, and more. But the fashion will impress you the most! You can see all ladies and gentlemen dress in the style of the 18th century period. It’s hard not to ooh and ah at every corner. Jane Austen spent the final eight years of her life living in Chawton. Today, her home serves as a public museum. The museum once created an exhibition — “Jane Austen in 41 Objects”. Each object explores a different aspect of Jane Austen’s life and works. It ran from March 10th to December 15th. Jane Austen Center is a must-visit to enjoy afternoon tea like Jane and her characters. Although guests are able to visit the tea room for free, it’s worth paying for a ticket to the center to see a life-sized statue of Jane and try on a variety of traditional costumes.

由文章Olympic breakdancing部分中“Breakdancing is the new Olympic sport that will make its first appearance in Paris 2024. (霹雳舞是新的奥运项目,将在2024年巴黎奥运会上首次亮相。)”可知,奥运霹雳舞将在2024年巴黎奥运会上首次亮相。故选D项。
22.细节理解题。由文章Olympic sports climbing部分“With its second time entering the Olympics, sports climbing has three branches: Speed, Bouldering and Lead. Speed is all about the speed of climbing. Bouldering is all about climbing a boulder on a wall and Lead requires athletes to climb a difficult route 20 meters high.(第二次进入奥运会的运动攀岩有三个分支:速度攀岩、抱石攀岩和难度攀岩。速度与攀岩的速度有关。抱石就是在墙上爬一块巨石,而难度攀岩则要求运动员爬一条20米高的高难度路线。)”可知,攀岩运动有三个项目:速度攀岩、抱石攀岩和难度攀岩,分别评估了攀岩速度、技巧和难度等多方面的技能。故选B项。
23.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Want to know all the ins-and-outs regarding the Paris 2024 Olympics? Then you’ve come to the right place! Below you will find all the information about the new Olympic sports.(想知道关于2024年巴黎奥运会的所有细节吗?那你来对地方了!下面你会发现所有关于新奥运项目的信息。)”可知,该文主要介绍了2024年巴黎奥运会中的新项目,包括滑板、攀岩、冲浪和霹雳舞等,提供了这些项目的具体信息。这显然是与体育赛事相关的介绍,因此最有可能来源于一个体育网站。故选A项。

根据文章第一段“Hawaiian honeycreepers are disappearing because of avian malaria (禽疟疾病) , spread by mosquitoes that were introduced to Hawaii by accident in the 1800s. With no immunity (免疫力) , native birds often die after a single mosquito bite.(由于19世纪意外传入夏威夷的蚊子传播的禽疟疾,夏威夷蜜旋木雀正在消失。由于没有免疫力,本土鸟类通常在被蚊子叮咬一次后就会死亡。)”可知,夏威夷蜜旋木雀面临的主要威胁是通过蚊子叮咬传播的禽疟疾。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Where mosquitoes spread human diseases, improved mosquitoes that are unable to reproduce successfully are often released, helping to limit the overall mosquito population. Now, this strategy is being used for wildlife protection. So far, millions of male mosquitoes have been delivered by the small plane in high- elevation forests on Maui.(在蚊子传播人类疾病的地方,通常会释放经过改良、无法成功繁殖的蚊子,以帮助控制蚊子总数。现在,这一策略正在被用于野生动物保护。到目前为止,已经有一批批雄性蚊子被小型飞机运送到茂宜岛的高海拔森林中。)”可知,在高海拔的茂宜岛森林释放雄性蚊子是为了控制蚊子数量,保护野生动物。故选C。
26.主旨大意题。根据文章第四段“Hawaiian honeycreepers are found nowhere else on Earth and make up an important part of the ecosystem. Experts say it’s difficult to fully understand how biodiversity loss will affect an entire ecosystem. The disappearance of honeycreepers would also mean the loss of species found nowhere else. Our world would just become less colorful, less diverse as we continue to let species go extinct.(夏威夷蜜旋木雀在地球上其他地方都找不到,是生态系统的重要组成部分。专家表示,很难完全理解生物多样性丧失会对整个生态系统产生怎样的影响。蜜旋木雀的消失也将意味着其他地方找不到的物种的丧失。如果我们继续让物种灭绝,我们的世界将变得不那么丰富多彩,不那么多样化。)”可知,第四段主要讲的是失去夏威夷蜜旋木雀的潜在后果。故选C。
27.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Finally, the hope is that Hawaiian honeycreepers will develop immunity to avian malaria, as birds in other places have done. And there’s already been a sign it could be possible. Recently, one bird that was thought to be dead reappeared, far from where it was released, having survived malaria.(最后,人们希望夏威夷蜜旋木雀能像其他地方的鸟类一样,对禽疟疾产生免疫力。而且已经有迹象表明这是可能的。最近,一只被认为已经死亡的鸟在远离它被释放的地方重新出现,证明它已经存活于疟疾之中。)”可知,最近一只被认为已经死亡的鸟在远离它被释放的地方重新出现,证明它已经存活于疟疾之中。由此可推测,作者对夏威夷蜜旋木雀的未来抱有积极的态度。故选A。

根据第二段“A new study finds that natural sounds offer health benefits too.(一项新的研究发现,自然的声音也对健康有益)”可知,这项新研究的重点是自然声音对健康的影响。故选A项。
根据第四段“The sites with the most natural sounds and the lowest man-made sounds were located in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest and were far from urban areas.(自然声音最多、人为声音最少的地点位于阿拉斯加、夏威夷和太平洋西北部,远离城市地区)”可知,听自然声音的理想地点都远离城市地区。故选A项。
根据最后一段“There was also evidence that more different types of natural sounds — more types of birds singing rather than just one type of bird— have benefits over fewer sounds.(还有证据表明,更多不同类型的自然声音(比如多种鸟类的鸣叫,而非只有一种)比更少的声音更有益)”可知,自然声音的多样性能给我们带来更多的益处。故选C项。
根据第一段“Listening to birds and water can lower stress and improve mood, study finds. Researchers have long known there are benefits from being in nature. Living around trees can help you live longer. Walking in the woods is good for your mood. Being near water can have positive effects on your well-being.(研究表明,聆听鸟鸣和水声可以降低压力、改善情绪。

根据第三段中的“Over the last 75 years, more than 80% of Siamese crocodiles have disappeared. Many, like this one, were hunted for their skins as part of the illegal wildlife trade.(在过去的 75 年里,超过 80% 的暹罗鳄已经消失。像这只暹罗鳄一样,许多鳄鱼因为它们的皮被作为非法野生动物贸易的一部分而被猎杀。)”可知,牌子上说这个手提包过去在游泳,是因为它是用鳄鱼皮做的。故选 A。
根据第四段中的“Native to parts of Southeast Asia, Siamese crocodiles are critically endangered and have become virtually extinct in the wild. Due to hunting as well as habitat loss, they are now absent from nearly 99% of their original range.(暹罗鳄原产于东南亚部分地区,是极度濒危的动物,在野外几乎已经灭绝。由于狩猎和栖息地的丧失,它们现在近 99%的原始活动范围消失了。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是使暹罗鳄濒临灭绝的原因。故选 D。
34.词义猜测题。根据画线处“The particular handbag that is on display at the zoo was(在动物园展出的那个特别的手提包被)”以及“at a UK airport(在英国机场)”可知,这只在动物园展出的手提包是在英国机场查封的,画线处和 C 项:Seized(没收,查封)含义接近。故选 C。
根据最后一段中的“We made this exhibit, within ZSL London Zoo’s Reptile House, to draw visitors’ attention to the destructive impact the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) is having on species around the world.(我们在伦敦动物园的爬行动物馆举办了这个展览,以引起游客对非法野生动物贸易对世界各地物种的破坏性影响的关注。)”

Eight months later, I returned home from the war. I ran over and hugged my wife and children in a flurry of tears. When I came to my father, I could tell he was excited even though he tried to hide it. I looked at him and then embraced him tightly. He whispered in my ear , “I’m very proud of you, Son , and I love you.”I looked that man , my dad, straight in the eyes as I held his head between my hands and I said, “I love you too, Dad,” and we embraced again. And then together, both of us cried.
Ever since that day, my relationship with my father was never the same. We had many deep conversations with each other, sharing our views on something or attitudes towards life. I learned that he had always been proud of me, and he was not afraid to say “I love you” anymore. Neither was I. I was just sorry that it took so many years and a war to find it out.

Every week at the Maui airport, a small plane gets loaded with 250, 000 passengers. They’re male mosquitoes, key players in a strategy that could be the last, best hope for Hawaii’s endangered birds. There were once more than 50 species of Hawaiian honeycreepers, a kind of small bird. Now, only 17 species are left, with some expected to go extinct in the wild as soon as this year. Hawaiian honeycreepers are disappearing because of avian malaria (禽疟疾病) , spread by mosquitoes that were introduced to Hawaii by accident in the 1800s. With no immunity (免疫力) , native birds often die after a single mosquito bite.
Still, small pockets of birds have survived because the mosquito attack has been blocked by an invisible line. Above 4, 000 to 5, 000 feet in elevation (海拔) , temperatures are too cold for mosquitoes, so the birds there have remained safe. But as temperatures rise with climate change, the mosquitoes are advancing into the birds’ last remaining shelter.
As a last effort to save the birds, researchers are borrowing a strategy from public health departments. Where mosquitoes spread human diseases, improved mosquitoes that are unable to reproduce successfully are often released, helping to limit the overall mosquito population. Now, this strategy is being used for wildlife protection. So far, millions of male mosquitoes have been delivered by the small plane in high-elevation forests on Maui.
Hawaiian honeycreepers are found nowhere else on Earth and make up an important part of the ecosystem. Experts say it’s difficult to fully understand how biodiversity loss will affect an entire ecosystem. The disappearance of honeycreepers would also mean the loss of species found nowhere else. Our world would just become less colorful, less diverse as we continue to let species go extinct.
Finally, the hope is that Hawaiian honeycreepers will develop immunity to avian malaria, as birds in other places have done. And there’s already been a sign it could be possible. Recently, one bird that was thought to be dead reappeared, far from where it was released, having survived malaria.
24.What is the primary threat to Hawaiian honeycreepers mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.Introduction of foreign bird species. B.A disease spread through mosquito bites.
C.Loss of habitat due to human activities. D.Natural disasters affecting the bird population.
25.Why were male mosquitoes released in high- elevation forests on Maui?
A.To study their ability to survive. B.To test new methods of mosquito delivery.
C.To control the mosquito population. D.To observe their impact on the ecosystem.
26.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The importance of biodiversity.
B.The strategies of protecting biodiversity.
C.The potential results of losing Hawaiian honeycreepers.
D.The impact of Hawaiian honeycreepers on the ecosystem.
27.What is the author’s attitude to the future of Hawaiian honeycreepers?
A.Positive. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Worried.

Listening to birds and water can lower stress and improve mood, study finds. Researchers have long known there are benefits from being in nature. Living around trees can help you live longer. Walking in the woods is good for your mood. Being near water can have positive effects on your well-being.
A new study finds that natural sounds offer health benefits too. There is plenty of evidence that spending time in natural areas is good for our health — but typically this research is done from a visual perspective, but we are curious what the role is of sounds we hear in these spaces.
Some examples they found reported in those studies included decreased pain, lowered stress, improved mood, and better cognitive (认知的) function. With these results in hand, they then listened to audio recordings from 251 sites in 68 national parks across the United States.
The sites with the most natural sounds and the lowest man-made sounds were located in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest and were far from urban areas. Only three locations with high natural sounds and low noise pollution were within 100 kilometers (62 miles) of urban areas.
However, despite human-made noises being heard most of the time at sites in urban locations, birds were still heard about 60% of the time and geophysical sounds like wind and rain heard about 19% of the time.
Not all natural sounds deliver the same benefits, the researchers found. For example, they discovered that the sounds of water had the largest impact on improving positive emotions and health outcomes, while bird sounds ease stress and annoyance. And the sounds of both birds and water were heard more than 23% of the time in the national park recording sites.
Interestingly, there was also some evidence that natural sounds have benefits over silence. There was also evidence that more different types of natural sounds — more types of birds singing rather than just one type of bird— have benefits over fewer sounds.
28.What does the new study focus on?
A.The effect natural sounds have on health.
B.The harm man-made sounds do to health.
C.The benefits natural sounds bring to the environment.
D.The effect nature has on people from visual perspective.
29.What is an ideal site according to paragraph 4?
A.It is away from cities. B.It has no noise pollution.
C.It has bird songs most of the time. D.It is within 62 miles of urban areas.
30.What brings more benefits to people?
A.The silence of nature. B.The sounds of water.
C.The diversity of natural sounds. D.Natural sounds mixed with noises.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.It Is Beneficial to Live Close to Water
B.We Are Surrounded by All Kinds of Sounds
C.The Sounds of Nature Affect Your Well-being
D.Man-made Noise Pollution Is Harmful to Our Health

Animals being extinct from the Earth is a serious issue. When this happens in order to use their fur or skin for fashion, it is even worse, since it's not even for a matter of human survival. That's why a London zoo decided to make a powerful statement at the Siamese crocodile enclosure
When visitors come in expecting to see a crocodile, they' re greeted with the handbag instead, making a very effective and powerful point about illegal wildlife trade and the harm it takes on the species involved.
A sign by the enclosure reads, “This bag used to be found swimming in slow- moving rivers and streams across Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Over the last 75 years, more than 80% of Siamese crocodiles have disappeared. Many, like this one, were hunted for their skins as part of the illegal wildlife trade.”
Native to parts of Southeast Asia, Siamese crocodiles are critically endangered and have become virtually extinct in the wild. Due to hunting as well as habitat loss, they are now absent from nearly 99% of their original range. A huge part of the decline of population is due to humans using their wetland habitat for rice farming, and things only took a turn for the worse when large- scale hunting for their skin for commercial purposes began in the 1950s.
The particular handbag that is on display at the zoo was confiscated at a UK airport, according to Benjamin Tapley, leader of reptiles and amphibians at ZSL London Zoo.
Tapley told The Huffington Post, “We made this exhibit, within ZSL London Zoo’s Reptile House, to draw visitors’ attention to the destructive impact the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) is having on species around the world. At ZSL, we are working globally with governments and local communities to protect wildlife, support law enforcement(执法) that targets illegal trade networks, empower local communities affected by IWT and reduce demand for threatened wildlife.”
32.Why does the sign say this handbag used to swim?
A.It is made of a crocodile's skin. B.It is made into a crocodile shape.
C.It is light enough to float on water. D.It was kept in flowing river at first.
33.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Wildly hunting of Siamese crocodiles. B.Destruction of Siamese crocodiles’ habitats.
C.Commercial value of Siamese crocodiles. D.Causes to make Siamese crocodiles endangered.
34.What does the underlined word “confiscate” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Found. B.Made. C.Seized. D.Stolen.
35.What do Tapley's words focus on?
A.The harm IWT caused. B.The purpose to show the handbag.
C.The importance of wildlife protection. D.The crisis endangered animals are facing.

My father never told me he loved me when I was a child. I always saw him as being a serious man who rarely had a smile. But my mom told me “I love you” everyday. So I really never thought about not hearing it from my dad. I never really thought about it much until I faced the reality of death.
On November 9th, 1990, I received word that my National Guard unit was going to the war zone. I had been in the Guard for 10 years and never dreamed that we would be activated for a war, even though I knew it was what we trained for. I went to my father and gave him the news. I could sense he was worried about me going but he said nothing, and eight days later I was gone.
On November 17th,1990, our military vehicles rolled out of rural Greenville, Michigan. The streets were filled with families and well-wishers to see us off. As we were close to the edge of town, I looked out the window of my truck and saw my wife, my children, and Mom and Dad. They were all waving and crying, except for my father. He just stood there, almost like a stone statue. He looked pretty old at that moment. I don’t know why, he just did.
I was gone for that Thanksgiving and missed our family’s dinner. A few days after Thanksgiving I was able to call my wife, and she told me something that has made me look at my father in a different way ever since. She told me that my father recited his usual Thanksgiving prayer. But this time he added one last sentence. As a tear ran down his cheek, he said, “Dear Lord, please watch over and guide my son, Rick, with your hand in his time of need as he serves his country, and bring him home to us safely.” At that point he burst into tears. I had never seen my father cry, and when I heard this, I guessed my father really did love me.
Eight months later, I returned home from the war.

Ever since that day, my relationship with my father was never the same.
