They never expected that this single party would transform from a relaxed canoe trip into a painful rescue mission. With the sun setting, an unexpected bark changed everything.
Led by Mitch White, the soon-to-be-married man, they searched for the source of the sound along the banks of the river. Suddenly, a weak cry for help came from the mud. (福建省厦门市2023-2024学年高二上学期期末英语质检)When I first met Nao Junior, he was in his 40s and one of only nine members of his Indigenous(土著的) group, Great Andamanese, who still spoke the idiom of his ancestors. As a language specialist, I had researched more than 80 Indian languages. I was on the islands to document their Indigenous voices before they faded into whispers.
Words in this language consisted of two classes: free and bound. The free words were all nouns that referred to the environment and its inhabitants, such as ra for “pig”. They could occur alone. The bound words were nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs that always existed with markers indicating a relation to other objects, events or states. The markers came from seven zones of the body and were attached to a root word to describe concepts such as “inside”, “outside”, “upper” and “lower”. For example, the morpheme(词素) er-, which qualified most anything having to do with an outer body part, could be stuck to -cho to yield ercho, meaning “head”.
Just as a head, a bound word, could not conceptually exist on its own, the mode and effect of an action could not be divided from the verb describing the action. Great Andamanese had no words for agriculture but a great many for hunting and fishing, mainly with a bow and arrow. Thus, the root word shile, meaning “to aim”, had several versions: utshile, to aim from above; arashile, to aim from a distance; and eshile, aiming to make a hole with a sharp object.
The studies established that the language seems to be truly old in origin. In a multistage process of development, words describing diverse body parts had changed into morphemes referring to different zones and combined with content words to yield meaning. The structure alone provides an insight into an ancient worldview in which the macrocosm(宏观世界) reflects the microcosm, and everything that is or that happens inseparably connects to everything else.
8. What is the purpose of the author’s stay on the islands?
A. To meet with an old friend. B. To teach Indigenous idioms.
C. To record an ancient language. D. To trace her ancestors.
9. “Aim at a pig’s head from afar” in Great Andamanese may be ______.
A. Arashile raercho B. Arashile ercho
C. Eshile ercho D. Eshile raercho
10. What can we infer from the verbs in Great Andamanese?
A. A verb could describe more than one action. B. Some of the verbs could be used on their own.
C. The locals probably live off seafood and meat. D. The tools used in people’s daily life are diverse.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Great Andamanese is the origin of multiple languages.
B. Great Andamanese is a doorway to the ancient wisdom.
C. Great Andamanese tells the development of the community.
D Human body shapes Great Andamanese’s unique worldview.

(河北省保定市高碑店市崇德实验中学2023-2024学年高二下学期期末)The summer reading season is here. Some people will opt for paperbacks because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers. But which is the more environmentally sustainable option?
According to 2023 data from the literary industry research group Words Rated, when it comes to pulp (纸浆) and paper, print book publishing is the world’s third-largest industrial greenhouse gas producer, and 32 million trees are cut down each year in the United States to make paper for books.
So many publishers are switching to on-demand printing. For example, Chronicle Books, are reducing their initial print runs to see how well the titles sell before they print more. “We felt that it was better to have a higher cost and have less waste,” said Chronic le Books president, Tyrrell Mahoney.
Publishers are also rethinking book design. It might be a surprise, but certain fonts (字体) can be more climate-friendly by using less ink and less paper.
Digital reading seems to have a considerable eco-advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees, pulping and shipping. Moreover, tech companies that make e-readers such as Amazon, which sells the market-leading Kindle e-reader, offer recycling programs for old devices.
“By choosing e-books as an alternative to print, Kindle readers helped save an estimated 2.3 million metric tons of carbon emissions over a two-year period,” said Corey Badcock, head of Kindle product and marketing.
But digital devices also come with a substantial carbon footprint, mainly at the producing stage. Their cases are made with fossil-fuel-derived plastics and the minerals in their batteries require resource-heavy mining.
Berners-Lee, the author of The Carbon Footprint of Everything , said the average e-reader has a carbon footprint of around 80 pounds. “This means that I’ve got to read about 36 small paperback books-worth on it before you break even,” he said.
“If you buy an e-reader and you read loads and loads of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do,” Berners-Lee said. “But if I buy it, read a couple of books, and decide that I prefer paperback books, then it’s the worst of all worlds.”
12. Why are publishers switching to on-demand printing?
A. To further reduce costs.
B. To increase market sales.
C. To make books more durable.
D. To be more environmentally friendly.
13. What is the author’s attitude towards digital devices’ carbon footprint?
A. Optimistic. B. Dismissive. C. Objective. D. Defensive.
14. What can we say about the carbon footprint of reading according to Berners-Lee?
A. Heavy e-readers will have a lower carbon footprint.
B. Paperback readers contribute less to carbon emissions.
C. The carbon footprint of reading is unworthy of attention.
D. There’s no way to measure the carbon footprint of e-readers.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. An Eco-Debate: Is My E-Reader Really Greener?
B. The Decline of Paper: A Look at Modern Publishing
C. The Future of Reading: E-ink Technology Advances
D. What’s Better for the Climate: A Paper Book or an E-Reader?

47.(河南省商丘市二十校2023-2024学年高二下学期期中联考)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。I don’t look like the rest of my family. As a matter of fact, I stand out quite a bit with my white skin and blue eyes. When people see us together, it is clear that I am adopted. I am happy to have such a loving and caring family, but sometimes I wish I knew who my birth parents are.
My friends often ask, “Are you sad that you don’t know your real parents?” I know that they are just curious and concerned about me — I’m fine, for the most part — but I feel like there’s something missing in my life, like a giant hole in my heart. My mother listens when I tell her about my feelings, and she feels that it is important for me to be in touch with my culture. Because of this, she and I go to Chinese Heritage Camp (CHC) each year in Snow Mountain Ranch.
CHC is a two-day camp where hundreds of adopted kids like me spend time with each other. We talk about how it feels to be adopted, and we participate in fun outdoor activities. It’s great because we can talk about our feelings without having the conversation get too intense. Confusion, occasional disappointment and anger are no longer strange; they are normal here. It makes me feel like I am not alone, and there is someone out there going through the exact same emotions. Whether we’re talking, laughing, crying, or dancing, CHC is always an experience to remember. I like all of the new people I meet, and I will keep them in my heart forever, because it always feels good to know there are people out there just like me.
In this way, my journey to find my roots continues for several years. I also gradually come out from the shadow of a seemingly inseparable teenager. Camp has changed the way I look at things. Each year seems to open up new surprises, adventures and friendships.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
CHC teaches me to learn that being adopted doesn’t mean that I’m strange.

【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读前文,根据第一段中“Some people will opt for paperbacks because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers. But which is the more environmentally sustainable option? (有些人会选择平装书,因为它们很容易借阅和分享。其他人则会选择电子阅读器。但哪一个是更环保的可持续选择呢?)”可知,本文主要谈论了纸质书和电子阅读器,哪个更环保。D“哪个对气候更好:纸质书还是电子阅读器?”符合主题,故选D项。

You see the industry adjusting to fight against that,” says Downey, security lead at payment company Braintree.
This was made ___22___ in May this year when there was an unparalleled attack on thousands of computer systems around the world, after a worm, named WannaCry, attacked computers in more than 150 countries, with payments of $300-$600 to restore access. There were an estimated 45,000 attacks across the UK, Russia, Ukraine, India, China, Italy, Egypt and beyond, with major companies ___23___.
One of the reasons these attacks spread so ___24___ is that businesses and consumers don’t update their software on a regular basis. But for both businesses and consumers, one simple thing remains ___32___: those who can keep both their security up to date and their passwords secure will be ahead of the crowd, says Downey. “You will then be far ahead of the curve of the average business or consumer.”
So don’t use variations of one password on lots of ___33___. If criminals hack a database with your log-in permit, they will then be able to ___34___ your passwords on other accounts. For me, Yuan Longping, a Chinese great agricultural scientist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is actually my national hero.
He was born on September 7th, 1930. In 1979, his technique for hybrid rice was introduced into the United States, which was the first case of intellectual property rights transfer in the history of China. With the development of new rice, gone are the days when Chinese people suffer from terrible starvation, and more countries of the world are able to grow more rice to feed the growing world population.
His perseverance, indifference to personal fame and fortune, his devotion to research work and profound insight are also great merits we should follow!

六、读后续写
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
CHC teaches me to learn that being adopted doesn’t mean that I’m strange.

【答案】One possible version:
CHC teaches me to learn that being adopted doesn’t mean that I’m strange. It just means that I wasn’t born into the family I live with. Being adopted won’t make my parents love me any less. Thanks to CHC, now when people ask me, “Are you sad you don’t know your real parents?” I can safely answer, “Maybe I don’t know who my birth parents are, and that makes me a little sad. But I do know that I live with my real parents in a real house, with a real family, and I love my life just the way it is.”
I also sincerely love and thank my parents. They have always been with me, from a know-nothing baby to a rebellious teenager, until now. They embrace me, they love me, they teach me, they care for me and they comfort me. I’m luckier than a lot of people. With all these in mind, I have been able to face my life calmly.
