LONDON — Britain made meteorological (气象学) history on Tuesday when temperatures in some places topped 40℃ for the first time ever recorded in the United Kingdom
It was a day of hot milestones in Britain, where in the morning the temperature was 39.1℃, the highest level ever recorded in the United Kingdom. That record was broken about two hours later, when Britain’s national weather service said the temperature at Heathrow Airport hit 40.2℃. If confirmed, it would be the first time that the temperature in Britain had gone beyond 40℃. However, by the afternoon, the temperature hit 40.3℃. The extreme weather brought great sufferings to the local people.
The hot, dry conditions also put great burden on emergency services. Fires spread in some areas of Britain and even other European countries. In France and Spain, firefighters have been battling wildfires that have burned forest and bush and in some places, forced people to leave. On Tuesday, more than 2,000 firefighters were facing off against a big fire in the southwest Britain that has forced 37,000 people to leave their homes this week.
In Britain, the government advised people to work from home, but for schools, to stay open — a request that some areas had ignored, sending students home.
Trains are particularly affected by high heat because the infrastructure (基础建设) — rails and overhead wires — is not built to deal with extremely hot temperatures. Network Rail, which operates the country’s rail system, issued a “do not travel” warning for trains in some areas. Several train companies said they planned to cancel all service running north from the capital. The London Underground, most of which does not have air conditioning has also stopped some of its service.
4. What do we know about the United Kingdom from the passage?
A. Its people were forced to leave their country.
B. Its emergency services broke down.
C. It didn’t have experienced firefighters
D. It suffered a lot from extreme heat.
5. What was the British government’s suggestion for schools?
A. Staying open as usual.
B. Sending students home.
C. Choosing homeworking.
D. No travelling.
6. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Many railways were out of date.
B. The railway facilities couldn’t function well in extremely hot weather.
C. The whole country’s railway system was in poor condition.
D. Some companies canceled all the train service.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. A Research into British Train System
B. The Hottest Weather Is the Most Harmful
C. The U.K. Temperature Reaches its Record High
D. The Impact of Hot Summer in the World
D 5. A 6. B 7. C

文章第一段提到“temperatures in some places topped 40℃ for the first time ever recorded in the United Kingdom.(一些地方的气温首次突破40℃,这是英国有记录以来的第一次。)” C:The U.K.

Before Regina Slage’s Algebra class begins, her Edgewater High School students have to drop their backpacks and phones off at the front of the room, only taking their school-issued laptops and other class materials to their desks. It’s Slage’s way of enforcing a statewide policy in Florida, signed into law in May, which prohibits students’ use of cellphones during instructional time.
“Our kids are more engaged. The apathy that we had seen from them before has seemed to fade. They seem more likely to wake back up to a social experience.” Slage said.
Beyond Florida, more schools across the country are restricting students’ use of smartphones in classrooms as concerns about their academic performance and mental well-being increase. While a common motivation for schools to prohibit phone use has been to eliminate a source of distractions, another has been to help students’ mental health by reducing a source of stress and anxiety. These restrictions can take a variety of forms. Some schools only limit students’ phone use during classroom time, allowing students to have phones out between classes and during lunch, while other schools prohibit phones all day.
District leaders, principals, and teachers at schools with no-cellphone policies have reported that they’ve seen improvements in students’ well-being since their policies took effect. Principals in Florida’s Orange County found that students were interacting more with one another and were more engaged in classroom activities, said Maria Vazquez, the district director. There were also fewer discipline problems and violent behaviors, she said. Often, educators said, violence such as bullying or fights which stem from things students say to each other via text messages or social media. The no-phone policy discourages those behaviors, they said.
8. Why does the author mention Slage’s Algebra class in the first paragraph?
A. To prove an argument.
B. To illustrate a phenomenon.
C. To introduce a topic.
D. To make a comparison.
9. What does the underlined word “apathy” mean in paragraph 2?
A. enthusiasm B. indifference C. despair D. mistake
10. Why are more schools limiting students’ phone access in class?
A. Because it has a bad impact on their study and health.
B. Because it poses a threat to campus safety.
C. Because it distracts teachers from their work.
D. Because it exerts a heavy economic burden on their families.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the phone ban?
A. Supportive. B. Approving. C. Unclear. D. Subjective.
C 9. B 10. A 11. C

根据第一段“It’s Slage’s way of enforcing a statewide policy in Florida, signed into law in May, which prohibits students’ use of cellphones during instructional time.(这是Slage执行佛罗里达州一项全州政策的方式,该政策于5月签署成为法律,禁止学生在教学时间使用手机。)”
根据第二段“The apathy that we had seen from them before has seemed to fade. They seem more likely to wake back up to a social experience.(我们之前从他们身上看到的apathy似乎已经消退。他们似乎更愿意重新投入到社交体验中去。)”可知,学生们更愿意重新投入到社交体验中去,他们身上的冷漠消失了,划线词apathy的意思是“冷漠”,和indifference意思相近。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Beyond Florida, more schools across the country are restricting students’ use of smartphones in classrooms as concerns about their academic performance and mental well-being increase.(除了佛罗里达州,全国越来越多的学校都在限制学生在课堂上使用智能手机,因为人们越来越担心学生的学习成绩和心理健康。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段“Principals in Florida’s Orange County found that students were interacting more with one another and were more engaged in classroom activities, said Maria Vazquez, the district director. There were also fewer discipline problems and violent behaviors, she said.(佛罗里达州Orange县学区主任Maria Vazquez说,学区的校长们发现,学生们彼此之间的互动更多了,在课堂活动中也更投入了。她说,纪律问题和暴力行为也更少了。)”可知,本文作者客观地陈述一些校长所观察到的禁止学生使用手机所带来的效果,作者本人对于此事的态度不明确,故选C。

People’s first memories are all autobiographical, or memories of significant experiences in their lives, and these events typically didn’t happen before the age of 2 or 3. In fact, most people can’t remember things from the first few years of their lives — a phenomenon researchers have called infantile amnesia
However, a research suggests that infants can form other kinds of memories. Within the first few days of life, infants can recall their own mother’s face and tell it from the face of a stranger. A few months later, infants can show that they remember lots of familiar faces by smiling most at the ones they see most often.
But if so, why do people experience infantile amnesia? Though it still isn’t clear whether it’s because we can’t form autobiographical memories, or whether we just have no way to retrieve them, scientists have a few guesses.
One is that autobiographical memories require you to have some sense of self. Researchers have tested this ability using a mirror recognition task called the rouge test. It involves marking a baby’s nose with a spot of red lipstick.
Researchers then place the infant in front of a mirror. Infants younger than 18 months just smile at the baby in the reflection, not showing any evidence of recognizing themselves or the red mark on their face. Between 18 and 24 months, infants touch their own nose, even looking embarrassed, suggesting that they connect the red dot in the mirror with their own face and start to form some sense of self.
Another possible explanation is that because infants don’t have language until later in the second year of life they can’t form descriptions about their own lives that they can later recall. Finally, the hippocampus (海马体), which is the region of the brain that’s largely responsible for memory, isn’t fully developed in the infancy period.
Scientists will continue to investigate how these factors might contribute to infantile amnesia.
12. According to the research, what can infants do in their first few months?
A. Memorize many familiar things.
B. Remember the face of strangers.
C. Identify their family members.
D. Smile at the people they are familiar with.
13. What is the purpose of the rouge test show?
A. To see if infants can identify themselves in the mirror.
B. To test if babies have autobiographical memories.
C. To see if infants have a sense of self.
D. To test if they smile at the reflections in the mirror.
14. Why do infants have infantile amnesia according to the text?
A. Infants’ imperfectly developed hippocampus.
B. Infants’ unusual autobiographical memories.
C. Infants’ inability to recall memories.
D. Infants’ inability to speak.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How can we get back the lost memories?
B. Why do we have no early memories?
C. How do babies form their early memories?
D. When do babies start remembering things?
D 13. C 14. A 15. B
根据文章第二段“A few months later, infants can show that they remember lots of familiar faces by smiling most at the ones they see most often.(几个月后,婴儿可以通过对最常见的人微笑来表明他们记得许多熟悉的面孔。)”
根据文章第四段“One is that autobiographical memories require you to have some sense of self. Researchers have tested this ability using a mirror recognition task called the rouge test.(一是自传体记忆需要你具备自我意识。研究人员使用一种叫做rouge测试的镜子识别任务来测试这种能力。)”和第五段“Researchers then place the infant in front of a mirror. Infants younger than 18 months just smile at the baby in the reflection, not showing any evidence of recognizing themselves or the red mark on their face. Between 18 and 24 months, infants touch their own nose, even looking embarrassed, suggesting that they connect the red dot in the mirror with their own face and start to form some sense of self.(研究人员随后将婴儿放在镜子前。18个月以下的婴儿只是对镜中的自己微笑,没有表现出任何认识自己或脸上红点的迹象。在18到24个月之间,婴儿会摸自己的鼻子,甚至看起来有些害羞,这表明他们已经把镜子中的红点与自己的脸联系在了一起,并开始形成某种自我意识。)”描述的rouge测试的过程可知,rouge测试的目的是测试婴儿是否有自我意识。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Finally, the hippocampus (海马体), which is the region of the brain that’s largely responsible for memory, isn’t fully developed in the infancy period.(最后,海马体是大脑中主要负责记忆的区域,在婴儿期并没有完全发育。)” 故选A。
文章第一段提到“In fact, most people can’t remember things from the first few years of their lives — a phenomenon researchers have called infantile amnesia (婴儿期遗忘).(事实上,大多数人无法记住生命最初几年的事情——研究人员将这一现象称为婴儿期遗忘。)”

根据上文“Being creative means allowing yourself to relax and think outside of box. It is significant not only for artists, writers, musicians, etc., but also for business people, students, and many others.(创造意味着让自己放松,跳出常规思考。这不仅对艺术家、作家、音乐家等很重要,对商人、学生和许多其他人也很重要。)”和下文“A lack of creativity can be frustrating and can sometimes limit your ability to be excellent in your career or personal life.(缺乏创造力可能会令人沮丧,有时甚至会限制你在职业或个人生活中变得优秀的能力。)” C“Yet sometimes we have problems being creative.(然而,有时我们在发挥创造力时会遇到问题。)”
根据下文“Seeing the work of others might inspire you and give you ideas to explore further.(看到别人的作品可能会激励你,并给你提供进一步探索的想法。)”和“you may try reading lots of books, subscribing to a magazine on topics that interest you, or watching a documentary film on a topic you are unfamiliar with.(你可以尝试读很多书,订阅你感兴趣的主题的杂志,或者观看你不熟悉的主题的纪录片。)” B“Expose yourself to new ideas and information.(让自己接触新的想法和信息。)”
根据上文“Give yourself time to think.(给自己时间思考。)”和下文“Devoted ‘think-time’ can help you, especially if you’re having trouble finding creative solutions to long-standing problems.(“专门的‘思考时间’可以帮助你,尤其是当你很难找到长期存在问题的创造性解决方案时。)”可知,这两句话都是说给自己时间思考,可以在开始工作之前和工作期间都进行,所以选项A“You can do this both before you start working and during your work(你可以在开始工作之前和工作期间都这样做)”符合题意。故选A。
根据上文“Avoid activities that don’t challenge you. Getting out of your comfort zone is an easy way to get a fresh viewpoint and go back to the problem or project you are working on with a renewed sense of energy.(避免那些不会对你构成挑战的活动。走出舒适区是获得新观点的一个简单方法,并带着焕然一新的能量回到你正在研究的问题或项目上。)”可知,此处是在说要尝试走出舒适区,后文应该接着描述如何走出舒适区,选项E“You may try taking a walk in an area you’ve never visited.(你可以尝试去一个你从未去过的地方散步)”符合语境,是走出舒适区的一个简单方法。故选E。
上文“Close your eyes, and discuss with this person whatever topic comes to mind.(闭上眼睛,和这个人讨论任何想到的话题。)” G“Cultivating your creativity takes time and effort.(培养创造力需要时间和努力。)”

The journey my daughter Cathy has had with her swimming is as long as it is beautiful. Cathy suffered some terrible illness in her early childhood, and as parents, we were always concerned about her health. We took her around for medical help. Luckily, after years of regular treatment, she finally became healthy except for occasional cough.
Two years ago, while Cathy was watching The Olympics, an idea suddenly came into her sweet little head — to be a swimmer. Last summer, she wanted to join our local swim team. Considering her previous health problem, I didn’t agree with her. But she insisted on trying and finally I had to give in to her. The team
practice, however, was a rough start for her. She coughed and choked and could hardly survive her first few weeks. Hearing her coughing bitterly one night, I decided to pull her from it all. But Cathy woke me up early the next morning, wearing her swimsuit ready to go! I told her she shouldn’t swim after a whole night’s coughing, but she refused to give up and insisted that she should go. I know swimming practice was not an easy thing to such a little girl who used to have disease.
From that day on, Cathy kept swimming and didn’t miss a single practice. She had a firm intention within herself to be the best she could be. My ten-year-old girl was growing and changing right before my eyes, into this determined human being with a passion and a mission. There were moments of frustration of course: often she would be the last swimmer in the race because of her insufficient strength. It was difficult for Cathy to accept that she wasn’t a winner-ever. But that didn’t stop her from trying. With her coach’s help, she practiced harder and harder and was used to swimming more laps alone after the group left. Seeing her exhausted, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her.
Then came the final awards ceremony at the end of the year.

Then came the final awards ceremony at the end of the year. Cathy didn’t expect any award but was still there to cheer on her friends and praise their accomplishments. As the ceremony was nearing the end, I suddenly heard the head coach announcing, “The highest honor goes to Cathy!” Looking around, he continued, “Cathy has inspired us with her will and enthusiasm. Although skills and talents bring great success, the most valuable fortune one can hold is the heart.”
It was the greatest moment of my daughter’s life. Cathy was moved to tears. With all she had been through in her ten years, this was the hour of true triumph. Despite the challenge that lay ahead, she refused to give up and continued to strive towards her dream. The kindness and encouragement from her coach stimulated Cathy’s enthusiasm for life, making her always have confidence in pursuing her original dream, which I will support wholeheartedly.

LONDON — Britain made meteorological (气象学) history on Tuesday when temperatures in some places topped 40℃ for the first time ever recorded in the United Kingdom.
A Its people were forced to leave their country.
B. Its emergency services broke down.
C. It didn’t have experienced firefighters
D. It suffered a lot from extreme heat.
5. What was the British government’s suggestion for schools?
A. Staying open as usual.
B. Sending students home.
C. Choosing homeworking.
D. No travelling.
6. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Many railways were out of date.
B. The railway facilities couldn’t function well in extremely hot weather.
C. The whole country’s railway system was in poor condition.
D. Some companies canceled all the train service.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. A Research into British Train System
B. The Hottest Weather Is the Most Harmful
C. The U.K. Temperature Reaches its Record High
D. The Impact of Hot Summer in the World

“Our kids are more engaged The apathy that we had seen from them before has seemed to fade.
A. Supportive. B. Approving. C. Unclear. D. Subjective.
D
Another possible explanation is that because infants don’t have language until later in the second year of life, they can’t form descriptions about their own lives that they can later recall.
B Remember the face of strangers.
