B On Sunday, Ecuador held a special vote on whether oil drilling (钻探) should be allowed in Yasuni National Park. The vote was part of a larger election to choose the country's next president. Nearly 60% of Ecuadorian voters chose to protect the park. In 2007, to protect the area, Rafael Correa—Ecuador's president at the time—offered to leave the oil in the ground. In exchange, he wanted the rest of the world to pay Ecuador $3.6 billion. Though Mr. Correa worked hard to find support for his idea, no group offered to pay the money. In 2016, Ecuador's state oil company, Petroecuador, began drilling in Yasuni. The company is drilling in a fairly small area known as Block 43.Block 43 makes up far less than 1% of the park, but it produces about 55,000 barrels of oil every day. But the drilling has upset many people in Ecuador. Yasunidos is a group which works to protect the park. For over ten years, Yasunidos has worked to allow Ecuador's people a chance to vote on oil drilling in Yasuni. In May, Yasunidos won a court case that allowed them to put the Yasuni drilling up for a vote. On Sunday, voters were asked if they supported oil drilling in the park or were against it. When the votes were counted, about 59% of the voters chose to stop drilling in Yasuni. Just 41% supported it. Yasunidos called the vote “a historic success for Ecuador and for the planet!” But the result is a disappointment for Ecuador's president, Guillermo Lasso. He believes the oil money is extremely important for the country. Selling oil from Yasuni brings in about $1.2 billion a year. The government won't be able to ignore or change the results of the vote, and will now have about a year and a half to end the drilling. Petroecuador says it will cost about $500 million to stop drilling and clean up the operation. 24.What was Rafael Correa's original plan? A.Drilling oil in Yasuni. B.Selling oil to the world. C.Getting support from local residents. D.Getting paid for not drilling oil. 25.What is Yasunidos' attitude towards drilling in Yasuni National Park? A.Doubtful. B.Uninterested. C.Opposed. D.Supportive. 26.What will be the result of stopping drilling? A.The environment will get destroyed. B.The country will suffer economic loss. C.It will meet with the locals' opposition. D.It will be encouraged by the government. 27.What can be the best title for the passage? A.Yasuni National Park Is Being Polluted B.Ecuador Votes to End Drilling in Yasuni National Park C.New President Will Come into Power in Ecuador D.Oil Drilling Becomes Major Supporting Industry C The impact of the man-made climate crisis on Antarctica is scientifically undeniable: stable ice shelves are retreating, air temperature increased by 3 degrees Celsius, krill (磷虾) numbers are declining, melting ice is contributing to sea level rise, and seals are getting displaced. “Antarctic biodiversity could decline substantially by the end of the century if we continue with business as usual,” Jasmine Rachael Lee, lead author of the University of Queensland study says. Published in the journal PLOS Biology, the study finds population declines are likely for 65% of the continent's plants and wildlife by the year 2100.The most vulnerable (脆弱的)species is Emperor penguins. In October 2022, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed Emperor penguins as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act(ESA), as experts predict the flightless seabird will see a 26% to 47% dip in its population by 2050. “This listing reflects the growing extinction crisis and highlights the importance of the ESA and efforts to conserve species before population declines become irreversible (不可逆转),” said Service Director Martha Williams at the time. Aside from Emperor penguins, other Antarctic specialists, like Adélie penguins and dry soil nematodes, were also highly vulnerable. We urgently need a combination of global and local conservation action to best conserve Antarctic species. Global action and global voices to help relieve climate change—because the biggest threat to Antarctica is coming from outside of it. And then we need local actions to help protect biodiversity against local threats and give them the best chance of adapting to climate changes. This will help to save our iconic (代表性的) species like Emperor penguins and all of Antarctica's unique and highly adapted inhabitants. It will also help humankind, as we rely heavily on the priceless services the Antarctica provides in regulating our climate and capturing sea level in its ice sheets. 28.What can we learn from paragraph 1? A.The impact of climate crisis is usually denied. B.Conservation efforts are badly needed. C.Air temperature on Antarctic increases 3℃ annually. D.Sea level rise results in seabirds losing their habitats. 29.Why is Emperor penguins mentioned in paragraph 2? A.To serve as a call to protect wildlife on Antarctica. B.To reflect the growing population of wild species. C.To prove the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act. D.To highlight the severe impact of rising temperature. 30.What is probably the best conservation policy? A.Reducing the chances of making a trip to Antarctica. B.Making joint efforts to relieve climate change. C.Attempting to provide essential nutrients to the ecosystem. D.Continuing to carry forward the Endangered Species Act. 31.What is the best title for the passage? A.Plants and Wildlife on Antarctica Will Decline Quickly B.Antarctic Species Are Vulnerable to Human Threats C.More Action Should Be Taken to Protect Wildlife on Antarctica D.The Best Conservation Strategy Will Be Carried Out Soon D Images of polar bears trying hard to stay on ice are often used by groups that want to stop the loss of natural habitats. However, part of the solution lies with the polar bears themselves. Polar bears are highly specialised. This means they have adapted to surviving in a specific area and eating specific food. Polar bears live above the Arctic Circle (北极圈) and eat fish. Their bodies are different from those of other types of bears. Polar bears have webbed feet for swimming, thicker fur and more body fat for living and swimming in icy conditions, and light-coloured fur to help them blend (融合) into their environment. As a result, polar bears do not do well when they are in a non-Arctic area. They cannot run as well as other bears, they can become too hot and tired easily, and they have a hard time hunting animals that are not in the snow or ice. Unfortunately for polar bears, climate change is reducing the size of the areas where they can live. This means the bears will eventually have to leave the Arctic areas and travel farther south. However, because they are so specialised, it is unlikely that polar bears will be as strong as they once were. Other creatures, such as crocodiles (鳄鱼), are not nearly as specialised. They live on almost every continent and in a wide variety of climates. In fact, crocodiles are one of the most adaptable animals on the planet and have survived for millions of years. When animals specialise, they often do better than less-specialised species in the same place, but if the climate or other conditions change, the specialised animals are usually the first to die off. If polar bears are going to survive the next 100 years, they will have to adapt. Many scientists believe that polar bears may eventually cross paths with brown bears and black bears. Whether these animals fight it out or fall in love to create new generations of bears remains to be seen. No matter how it happens, many hope the polar bears will live far into the future—in many different places. 32.What makes it possible for polar bears to survive in the Arctic area? A.The colour of their fur. B.Their specialised body parts. C.The rich food sources. D.Their excellent hunting skills. 33.What does the example of crocodiles show? A.It shows the cause of climate change. B.It shows the importance of adaptability. C.It shows the threats to specialised animals. D.It shows the progress some animals have made. 34.What will happen to polar bears if they cannot adapt to climate change? A.They will be faced with extinction. B.Their population will increase at a slow rate. C.They will find it hard to hunt animals like deer. D.They will have to live in harmony with other bear species. 35.What is the passage mainly about? A.What harm humans do to wildlife. B.How specialisation hurts polar bears. C.Why climate change affects wildlife. D.How polar bears' habitats become threatened. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面的短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Alternative energy is becoming popular in many homes. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did. So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try. I chose Paul Revere's Horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else's choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care. 注意:续写词数应为150左右。 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation._______________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!15 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null Unit 3【单元测试卷】 (满分:150分 时间:120分钟) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分 7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1.Where does the conversation probably take place? And as is known to all, two-year-olds don't need a computer. But early childhood experts agree that two-year-olds need the experience of using a computer. At the age of 3.5, most children can learn to handle the mouse. At this age, kids may not need a computer, but they'll enjoy it. And they'll learn from it, often in unforeseen ways.⑱ Judy Salpeter, San Francisco, California, the editor of Tech & Learning, remembers that when her son was three years old, he loved a PaintBox program that allowed him to position stamps of little figures on the screen. One day, she overheard him saying, “I'll put all these here because they're food, and all these here because they're animals.” Although the software hadn't been designed to teach classification, it allowed him to experiment with that idea himself.⑲ If you don't have a computer by the time your child goes to school, he'll form his first impression of computers in the classroom. It's OK for children to learn the computer at school. But if they have used it at home, they'll feel smarter and it's easier for them to succeed in their studies. By third or fourth grade, however, students may be at a definite disadvantage in both writing and research if they don't have at-home access to word processing programs.⑳ 第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 A Best Campgrounds in U.S. National Parks Gold Bluffs Beach Campground, Redwood National & State Park, CA The remote campground is located about 6 miles up unpaved Davison Road. 【解题导语】 本文是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了厄瓜多尔就是否允许在亚苏尼国家公园进行石油钻探举行了一次特别投票活动。 24.What was Rafael Correa's original plan? 【解题导语】 本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了现有的保护工作不足以保护南极生态系统,我们迫切需要联合全球行动,以更好地保护南极物种。 28.What can we learn from paragraph 1? 【解题导语】 本文是一篇议论文。文章讲述了特殊的生存环境给北极熊带来的不良影响。 32.What makes it possible for polar bears to survive in the Arctic area? A.The colour of their fur. B.Their specialised body parts. C.The rich food sources. D.Their excellent hunting skills. Yours, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. 注意:续写词数应为150左右。 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation._______________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ One possible version: A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you'd win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It's you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn't have written this article. Again thank you very much!” I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said, “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn't like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works,” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social studies teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing. 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!15 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
