This is because studies suggest that 10,000 steps a day is enough to help us stay healthy and live longer. However, new study says just 4,000 steps a day could be the magic number for us to live well into old age. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine analyzed (分析) 17 studies that looked at how far people walked during the week. The scientists found that 4,000 steps a day reduced the risk of dying from diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other life-threatening conditions. The leading researcher Dr. Martin said 4,000 steps was about a 30- to 45-minute walk, or about three to four kilometers. The study is published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiolgy. The research examined health and exercise data from more than 225,000 adult participants (参与者) worldwide over seven years. They had an average age of 64. Some of them were in good health, while others suffered from heart problems. Dr. Martin found that 4,000 steps was helpful, and that it was a minimum amount. He said, “I wouldn’t want people to look at that as a magic number. More is better,” He added that walking an additional 1,000 steps a day was linked with a 15 percent lower risk of earlier death. He said people should add at least one walk to their daily routine. 30. Why do people care about their everyday walk steps? A. They want to win some prizes. B. Step numbers are related to health. C. Walking more makes them excited. D. Daily walk helps them lose weight. 31. From the new study, what is the magic number of steps? A. 1,000. B. 4,000. C. 5,000. D. 10,000. 32. How did the scientists do the research? A. By watching how people walk. B. By testing patients with heart diseases. C. By interviewing the old adults in good health. D. By examining the participants’ health and exercise data. 33 What did Dr. Martin suggest people do based on the research? A. Count their exact daily steps. B. Walk as fast as possible. C. Listen to music while walking. D. Have a walk every day. C Amy was a dear little girl, who just started her primary school. She often wasted a long time in getting ready to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she ought to. In the village where she lived, Mr. Thornton ran a store in which he sold fruit of all kinds, including strawberries in their season. One day he said to Amy, “Would you like to earn some money?” “Oh, yes,” replied she, “for I want to buy some new shoes.” “Well, Amy,” said Mr. Thornton, “I noticed some fine, ripe strawberries on Mr. Green’s farm today, and he said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you thirteen cents a kilogram for all you will pick for me.” Amy was delighted at the thought of earning some money; so she ran home to get a basket, intending to go immediately to pick the strawberries. Then she thought she would like to know how much money she would get if she picked five kilograms. With the help of her pencil, she found out that she would get sixty-five cents. “But if I should pick a dozen kilograms,” thought she, “how much should 1 earn then?” “Dear me,” she said, after figuring a while, “I should earn a dollar and fifty-six cents.” Amy then found out how much Mr. Thornton would pay her for fifty, a hundred, and two hundred kilograms. It took her some time to do this, and then it was so near lunch time that she had to stay at home until afternoon. As soon as lunch was over, she took her basket and hurried to the farm. Some boys had been there before lunch, and all the ripe strawberries were picked. She could find only one kilogram. As Amy went home, she thought of what her teacher had often told her —“Do your task at once then think about it,” for “one doer is worth a hundred dreamers.” 34. What did Amy want to buy? A. C. One day he said to Amy, “Would you like to earn some money?” “Oh yes,” replied she, “for I want to buy some new shoes.” “Well, Amy,” said Mr.
