Jeff Steele was born in Texas and grew up in Mississippi. A gifted singer, Jeff began writing songs when he was in high school. “I was going to be the next Lionel Richie,” he recalls with a smile. In time, however, Jeff began to write songs, and in the early 1980s formed a group called The Steeles. Within a decade, not only had the group signed a recording contract with Daywind Records, but Jeff became a staff writer for the label and moved his family to Nashville, Tennessee.
Throughout the 1990s, Jeff penned a string of hits for Daywind, including four No. 1 songs for The Steeles. But not only does Jeff write for his group, he also has his songs recorded by other artists that include Greater Vision, The Florida Boys, The Perrys, The Gaither Vocal Band and others. Jeff’s efforts have collected four BMI Awards for radio singles by Karen Peck & New River, The Inspirations, and Legacy Five, along with a popular song by The Steeles. That song also received a Dove Awards nomination (提名), as did “Not One Word” by The Collingsworth Family.
What has changed for Jeff regarding songwriting over the last three decades? “I used to write everything alone, but now I enjoy co-writing, especially with my son, Brad.” The Steeles’ latest StowTown Records release, Be the Reason, contains multiple songs penned by the father and son, with each having an unusual feel. Perhaps this is because Brad — at age 30 — is writing as a young man from the point of looking forward, and Jeff — at age 63 — is writing from a pen of wisdom and experience. This may also be part of the reason that their songs are connecting with all of us: because we, as listeners, can benefit from both generations.
24. Who might Lionel Richie be?
A. A writer. B. A friend of Jeff’s.
C. A well-known musician. D. A member of The Steeles.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A. Jeff’s crucial role in his group. B. Jeff’s influence on other artists.
C. Jeff’s secret to success as a singer. D. Jeff’s extraordinary achievements.
26. What is special about Be the Reason?
A. It was completed by Brad himself. B. It contains a multi-generational feel.
C. It displays people from all walks of life. D. It received a Dove Awards nomination.
27. Which of the following can best describe Jeff?
A Talented and devoted. B. Tough and generous.
C. Scholarly and friendly. D. Ambitious and imaginative.

In 2020, archaeologists unearthed six unusual stone objects in western Tibet, each with a pointed tip at one end and an eyelike opening at the other. Now, researchers conclude that the objects are stone sewing needles as much as 9,000 years old — the oldest stone tools made by grinding (磨) found on the Tibetan Plateau, where ancient people must have battled a severe climate to survive.
The oldest needles are made of bone. Archaeologists have found some dating back about 50,000 years in Russia’s Denisova Cave. But before the discovery, the oldest stone needles were only 2,700 years old, found in Henan Province in China. The new find pushes the appearance of stone needles back more than 6,000 years.
Only two of the six needles were undamaged, and eyes were preserved in four. Needle 1 — the longest, widest, and thickest one — bears deep marks running along its length on all sides, which is the characteristic of scraping (刮擦). These are hidden behind finer, multidirectional grinding marks, suggesting the needle was first scraped into shape and then ground to give it a tip. The top of the needle was drilled to form an eye.
To confirm how the needles were made, the researchers attempted to copy them using the same material. The whole process took at least seven times longer than making softer bone needles. Yun Chen, a team member from Sichuan University, says, “Since they were harder than bone needles, we concluded that these stone needles may have been used to sew thicker materials, such as a tent.”
The team made admirable efforts, says Francesco d’Errico from the University of Bordeaux. But he thinks the tips of the “needles” are not fine enough for sewing. The fact that some of the needles are made of talc (滑石) is another knock against the needle theory, he says, because talc is too soft to pierce tough materials. Some also wonder about a third possibility that the objects were tools to make fishing nets, given the site is close to a lake.
28. What is the importance of the 2020 discovery?
A. It revises the history of stone needles in China.
B. It corrects misunderstandings about the Tibetan Plateau.
C. It proves the widespread use of needles in ancient times.
D. It shows ancient people’s struggle against severe conditions.
29. What does the underlined word “These” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The eyes of the needles. B. The deep marks of scraping.
C. The two undamaged needles. D. The different sides of needles.
30. What conclusion did the researchers reach?
A. Stone needles appeared after bone needles.
B. Bone needles were strong enough to sew tents.
C. Bone needles are harder to make than stone needles.
D. Stone needles were likely used for tougher materials.
31. What is Francesco d’Errico’s attitude towards the conclusion made by the researchers?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Carefree. D. Supportive.

Overseeing the development of a literary culture, which is part of a critic’s job, is a process of fits and starts. Critics play a role in determining which books published today should be labeled “instant classics”, which books are best described as “little-known” and which books published in past decades or centuries deserve re-examination. Beginning in the early 20th century, reissues complicated those categories. Older books like “The Dud Avocado” and “Stoner” — and even “Moby-Dick” and “The Great Gatsby” — became more famous upon reprinting than they had been when originally published.
The canon (文学经典) itself is in a constant, ongoing process of being shaped by book lovers who are often in disagreement not only about what qualifies as literature but also about the purpose of reading literature. A reissue, more often than not published after the author is dead, rebalances the purpose of literature away from writer intent and more toward reader intent.
Early last year, the small magazine n+1 restated a longstanding policy: No dead people. Reading work from dead authors may be unavoidable, but as literary critics tasked with creating and shaping the conversation, writing about dead people was considered unacceptable — because it was unfair to expect that contemporary writers, already struggling to secure attention for their work, compete with dead writers. We need, n+1 argued, to “refocus the public’s attention on the under-read work of the living.”
It’s true that the literary world — perhaps egged on by editors, publishers and critics alike — frequently talks about reviving unjustly ignored voices from the depths of history, trying to ensure they are rescued from being forgotten. We don’t reissue the work of dead authors in order to do right by them, but because their work is a piece of history. We need to understand literature in its own right and as an expression of its own time and context, even if that context is horrifying or uninviting or problematic. Reading well — and writing good criticism — brings a sense of wonder to history, and despite the emotional influences that may sometimes inspire reissues, they uniquely connect us to the past, which will always be important.
32. What does the author indicate by mentioning the older books in paragraph 1?
A. Reissues make sorting harder. B. Reissues never boost popularity.
C. New editions show more changes. D. Critics should recategorize reissues.
33. What can we say about a reissue from paragraph 2?
A. It is made to a consistent standard. B. It causes disagreements among readers.
C. It breathes life into forgotten literary works. D. It shifts the literary focus toward readers’ needs.
34. What effect did n+1 expect from its policy?
A. Inspiring living writers to learn from dead writers. B. Bridging the divide between critics and writers.
C. Making more living writers’ voices heard. D. Making critics less hard on living writers.
35. How does the author look at reissuing dead authors’ works?
A. A way to correct past injustices against authors. B. A method to celebrate authors’ contributions.
C. A means to obtain insights into the history. D. A strategy to maintain literary traditions.
Do you have a song that you cannot stop thinking about? You try to stop, but the song just continues in your mind. ____36____ This is a common problem and the problem has an unusual name. It is called an earworm.
____37____ Some people experience earworms almost every day. For other people, it only happens once in a while. So what makes people experience earworms? There are four possible reasons.
The first reason is simply hearing the song. A song may become an earworm for an individual just because they have heard it recently. ____38____ Sometimes an individual hears or plays a particular song often. When this happens, the song is more likely to become an earworm. Another reason is stress. It can bring past experiences into the mind and often people have strong connections between memories and music. ____39____ Triggers such as sights, sounds or smells are also major causes for earworms. These stimuli can cause an individual to start thinking about a particular song.
What can you do when you have an earworm playing over and over in your head? Scientists do not have a cure for earworms. But people who experience earworms often have many suggested solutions. For example, doing difficult math problems in your head can help you concentrate on the problems rather than earworms. Another method is to write the words of the song down backwards and then sing the words as written down. ____40____
A. Earworms are difficult to research.
B. It plays again, and again, and again.
C. Almost everyone has experienced an earworm.
D Repeated exposure also makes a song an earworm.
E. This troubles the brain and it immediately stops singing.

Little Lucy lived in a very poor part of a big city. One day, her class teacher talked about gifts and how it was much more important to give them than to receive them. She said that she hoped all the boys and girls in the class would remember to give something, however small, to their loved ones to show how much they loved them.
Afterward Lucy thought a good deal about what the teacher had said and wondered how she could afford to give anything to anybody. Her daddy gave her $1 a week for pocket money, and that didn’t go very far these days. Somehow, she thought, she would try to buy something for mother, and father, and brother, and sister, but, oh, dear, there was Grandma, too! What could she do about Grandma?
The next time she went to class she asked the teacher if it would be acceptable to give Grandma just a card. The teacher said Grandma would be happy to receive the smallest thing if it was given in love. So Lucy began searching for a card for Grandma that wouldn’t cost too much. One day she saw it. The very one! It had a picture of a cat on it, and Lucy remembered that Grandma had just lost old tabby cat(斑猫)that she had loved so much. So she bought the card, paying one whole week’s pocket money for it.
On the day Lucy gave Grandma the card, she was overjoyed to see how pleased Grandma was. She said the picture of the cat was just like her own precious tabby. This gave Lucy an idea. “Someday,” she said to herself, “I’ll buy my granny a real cat. Just think how happy she’ll be then!”
She found a pet shop and asked how much a real cat would cost. “Twenty dollars,” said the man. Lucy’s face fell. Twenty dollars! How in the world would she ever get $20? That would take all her pocket money for 20 weeks — five whole months!
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
As she stood on the street, Lucy felt something brushing her leg.

M: I’m not sure. It depends on how long the interview lasts. Oh, dear, I hope it goes well. I know I can do the job. It’s just getting that across to them.
W: Just relax. Remember, you’ve got to convince them that they need you. And you’re not going to do that if you are in a state. There are many slices of toast in the kitchen. Have some more. It’ll make you feel much better. What time’s your appointment?
M: At 2:30.
W: Make sure you have a proper lunch. More coffee?
M: Another cup of coffee sounds great, thanks, darling.
W: One more thing, don’t get there too early or you’ll have to hang around.
M: Thank you for the support. I’ll manage OK, I’m sure.

M: So Sally, how did you become a radio reporter?
W: well, I studied Communication Studies at university. When I graduated, I took the first job I was offered. But being a marketing assistant was just too far from what I wanted — I’d always considered training as a DJ. Meanwhile, my friends had more interesting jobs than me. One was even working as a manager for a rock band. That’s what pushed me to quit my job and call my cousin, who was a radio presenter in Brighton.
M: What happened then?
W: I arranged to sit in on his show for a week, and that confirmed my passion for radio. After that, I approached the boss of the station, Eric Johnson. I convinced him to offer me a place on their Trainee Course, from which I learnt a lot — I got to do traffic reports on air, background research about musicians, and even live interviews.
M: That sounds like a very rewarding experience!
W: Yeah. The only downside was the four days I spent working at the station each week were unpaid. To support myself, I had to do waitressing jobs the rest of the week.

M: Hello, everyone. Today I’d like to tell you something about “gorillas”, an animal that has attracted me since I was little. I watched a film about them when I was seven and they really caught my imagination. I also remember being given an amazing book about them with loads of wonderful pictures in it later. My uncle helped keep my enthusiasm going. He’s a tour guide in the southwest of Uganda, one of the gorilla’s main tropics! Gorillas, which look like large monkeys without tails, mainly feed on plants. They eat all sorts of shoots and leaves, for example. They can occasionally also be seen eating insects, apparently, which I’ve never realized before. And despite the fact that they live in a very hot climate, these animals are very rarely observed drinking. They seem to get enough water from their diet. Gorillas are social animals. A group of mountain gorillas usually consists of one or two younger males...

Throughout the 1990s Jeff penned a string of hits for Daywind, including four No.
A. Talented and devoted.

A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Carefree. D. Supportive.
A 29. B 30. D 31. B

根据第一段“In 2020, archaeologists unearthed six unusual stone objects in western Tibet, each with a pointed tip at one end and an eyelike opening at the other.(2020年,考古学家在西藏西部出土了6件不同寻常的石器,每件都有一端是尖的,另一端是眼睛状的开口)”以及第二段“The oldest needles are made of bone. Archaeologists have found some dating back about 50,000 years in Russia’s Denisova Cave. But before the discovery, the oldest stone needles were only 2,700 years old, found in Henan Province in China. The new find pushes the appearance of stone needles back more than 6,000 years.(最古老的针是用骨头做的。考古学家在俄罗斯的丹尼索瓦洞穴中发现了一些可以追溯到大约5万年前的东西。但在此之前,最古老的石针只有2700年的历史,是在中国河南省发现的。这一新发现将石针的出现时间推到了6000多年前)”可知,这一新发现将石针的出现时间推到了6000多年前,所以2020年发现的重要性是修正了中国石针的历史。故选A项。
根据前文“Only two of the six needles were undamaged, and eyes were preserved in four. Needle 1 — the longest, widest, and thickest one — bears deep marks running along its length on all sides, which is the characteristic of scraping (刮擦).(六根针中只有两根没有损坏,四根的眼睛被保存了下来。1号针是最长、最宽、最粗的针,针身两侧都有深痕,这是刮痕的特征)”可知,these为代词,指代前文提到的事,此处应是指代针身两侧的深痕。故选B项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“To confirm how the needles were made, the researchers attempted to copy them using the same material. The whole process took at least seven times longer than making softer bone needles. Yun Chen, a team member from Sichuan University, says, “Since they were harder than bone needles, we concluded that these stone needles may have been used to sew thicker materials, such as a tent.”(为了证实这些针是如何制成的,研究人员试图用相同的材料复制它们。整个过程花费的时间至少是制作软骨针的7倍。来自四川大学的团队成员陈云说:“由于它们比骨针更硬,我们得出结论,这些石针可能被用来缝制更厚的材料,比如帐篷。”)”可推知,研究人员认为石针可能被用来制作更坚硬的材料。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The team made admirable efforts, says Francesco d’Errico from the University of Bordeaux. But he thinks the tips of the “needles” are not fine enough for sewing. The fact that some of the needles are made of talc (滑石) is another knock against the needle theory, he says, because talc is too soft to pierce tough materials.(波尔多大学的Francesco d 'Errico说,这个团队做出了令人钦佩的努力。但他认为,“针”的尖端不够细,不适合缝纫。他说,一些针是由滑石粉制成的,这是对针理论的另一个冲击,因为滑石粉太软了,无法刺穿坚硬的材料)”可知,Francesco d 'Errico认为“针”的尖端不够细,不适合缝纫。由此推知,Francesco d 'Errico对研究者得出的结论持怀疑态度。故选B项。
D
A 33. D 34. C 35. C
根据第一段中“Beginning in the early 20th century, reissues complicated those categories. Older books like “The Dud Avocado” and “Stoner” — and even “Moby-Dick” and “The Great Gatsby” — became more famous upon reprinting than they had been when originally published.(从20世纪初开始,重新发行使这些分类变得复杂。像《烂鳄梨》和《斯通纳》这样的老书,甚至《白鲸》和《了不起的盖茨比》,在重印后比最初出版时更出名。)”可知,作者提到老书在重新分类发行后更出名,是为了说明重新发行会加大分类难度。故选A项。
根据第二段中“A reissue, more often than not published after the author is dead, rebalances the purpose of literature away from writer intent and more toward reader intent.(重新发行往往是在作者死后才出版,它重新平衡了文学的目的,使其远离作者的意图,更倾向于读者的意图。)”
根据第三段中“Early last year, the small magazine n+1 restated a longstanding policy: No dead people.(去年年初,小型杂志《n+1》重申了一项长期政策:不接受死人。) ”和“We need, n+1 argued, to “refocus the public’s attention on the under-read work of the living.”(《n+1》认为,我们需要“把公众的注意力重新集中到那些被忽视的活着的人的作品上”。)”
根据最后一段中“We don’t reissue the work of dead authors in order to do right by them, but because their work is a piece of history.(我们重新发行已故作者的作品不是为了对他们做正确的事,而是因为他们的作品是一段历史。)”

D. Repeated exposure also makes a song an earworm.
E. This troubles the brain and it immediately stops singing.
F. Then your mind starts singing the main part of a popular song.
G. So a particular memory may cause the brain to think of a particular song.
B 37. C 38. D 39. G 40. E

根据前文“Do you have a song that you cannot stop thinking about? You try to stop, but the song just continues in your mind.(你有没有哪首歌让你无法停止思考?你试着停下来,但这首歌在你的脑海里继续)”可知,这首歌在你的脑海里继续播放,B项“It plays again, and again, and again.(它一遍又一遍地播放)”是对前文的进一步说明,符合文意。故选B项。
【37题详解】
空处位于段首,是本段的中心句,根据后文“Some people experience earworms almost every day. For other people, it only happens once in a while. So what makes people experience earworms?(有些人几乎每天都有耳朵虫。对其他人来说,这只是偶尔发生。那么是什么让人们感到耳朵虫呢?)”可知,此处讲述有的人每天都有耳朵虫。而有的人偶尔有,所以C项“Almost everyone has experienced an earworm.(几乎每个人都有过耳朵虫的经历)”符合本段主题,承接上文,引出下文。故选C项。
【38题详解】
根据前文“The first reason is simply hearing the song. A song may become an earworm for an individual just because they have heard it recently.(第一个原因是仅仅听这首歌。一首歌可能会成为一个人的耳朵虫,只是因为他们最近听过这首歌)”以及后文“Sometimes an individual hears or plays a particular song often. When this happens, the song is more likely to become an earworm.(有时一个人经常听到或演奏一首特定的歌曲。当这种情况发生时,这首歌更有可能成为耳朵虫)”可知,此处在讲述一首歌可能会成为一个人的耳朵虫的原因是因为经常听这一首特定的歌,所以D项“Repeated exposure also makes a song an earworm.(重复播放也会让一首歌成为耳朵虫)”符合此处主题。故选D项。
【39题详解】
根据前文“Another reason is stress. It can bring past experiences into the mind and often people have strong connections between memories and music.(另一个原因是压力。

The opening ceremony of the Tang Xianzu Theater Festival and International Theater Exchange Month之间是被动关系,用被动语态,根据时间状语on Sept. 故填was held。

故填to promote。

I am writing to share with you the good news that I won the first place for the poster designed for World Meteorological Day.
My winning poster features a polar bear crying in fire and a person standing by with a lighter in his hand, which mirrors that the worrying issue of climate change is caused by human activity and that our negative effects may one day kill all creatures, including ourselves.

注意:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As she stood on the street, Lucy felt something brushing her leg. Looking down, she saw a beautiful tabby cat. For a moment she was tempted to pick it up and run home with it. However, she quickly dismissed the thought. Just then, a lady called out, “My cat seems to like you.” Lucy responded with a smile, expressing her desire to give one to Grandma and her concern over the cost of $20 at the pet shop. The lady nodded sympathetically, mentioning that her cat would soon have kittens. She would love Lucy to come and choose one for her grandma once they are old enough. Overjoyed, Lucy thanked the lady warmly.
Two months later, Lucy went to the lady’s house to get a baby cat. There, she found four adorable kittens and chose the one that looked the most like the cat Grandma had lost. As she made her way back home, eager to deliver the precious gift to her grandma, the anticipation consumed her. When Lucy finally presented the cat, Grandma was surprised and pleased. After learning the heartwarming story behind the thoughtful gesture, Grandma was also deeply touched. As Lucy saw the kitten in Grandma’s arms, she knew her gift had brought immeasurable joy to her beloved grandma.
