The Best National Parks to Visit in Winter While most parks tend to draw families in the summer and fall, there are also ideal spots for adventurous winter trips. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming The country’s oldest and best-known national park takes on an almost otherworldly atmosphere in winter: the air filled with rolling steam, the strong colors of hot springs, the surrounding white landscapes, let alone the impressive wildlife during this time, like bison, wolves, and playful red foxes. Just book a guided hiking tour to get a ranger’s perspective on the park and local people. Joshua Tree National Park, California With its giant red rocks and unique trees, you’ll feel like stepping onto a foreign planet as you spend hours hiking the Panorama Loop or Maze Loop. The park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, featuring virtually zero light pollution and the country’s best views of a starry sky. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona A significantly lower number of visitors in winter means you can take in unblocked views of the South Rim, and get to see the rare beauty of the Grand Canyon dusted with snow. For those adventurous and daring, it is recommended to hike the Bright Angel Trail and take the chance to see the canyon’s wintertime wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and bald eagles. Virgin Islands National Park, St. John Surprise! Not all wintertime national park trips need to involve snow. Virgin Islands National Park is most famous for its white-sand beaches. You can also hike inland to visit old sugar plantations, or venture out to the water to swim along with sea turtles and manta rays. You will definitely enjoy a different winter here. 1. Which park will one choose if he/she is interested in stars? A. Yellowstone National Park. B. Joshua Tree National Park. C. Grand Canyon National Park. D. Virgin Islands National Park. 2. What do we know about the Grand Canyon National Park? A. We can have a poor view of the South Rim there. B. It lies in an area with rolling steam and hot springs. C. There is a slight decline in visitor numbers in winter. D. The Bright Angel Trail is challenging in cold weather. 3. Which activity is mentioned in all of the parks? A. Hiking. B. Skiing. C. Swimming. D. Hunting. B 2. D 3. 根据Joshua Tree National Park, California下列段落中“The park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, featuring virtually zero light pollution and the country’s best views of a starry sky. (该公园被公认为国际黑暗天空公园,具有几乎零光污染和全国最好的星空景观。)”可知,如果对星星感兴趣,应该选择Joshua Tree 国家公园。故选B项。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona下列段落中“For those adventurous and daring, it is recommended to hike the Bright Angel Trail and take the chance to see the canyon’s wintertime wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and bald eagles. (对于那些喜欢冒险和大胆的人,建议徒步 Bright Angel 小径,并有机会看到峡谷的冬季野生动物,包括骡鹿、麋鹿和秃鹰。)”可知,在Grand Canyon国家公园,The Bright Angel 小径在寒冷的天气具有挑战性。故选D项。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming下列段落中“Just book a guided hiking tour to get a ranger’s perspective on the park and local people. (只要预定一个有导游的徒步旅行,就能从护林员的角度了解公园和当地居民。)”、Joshua Tree National Park, California下列段落中“With its giant red rocks and unique trees, you’ll feel like stepping onto a foreign planet as you spend hours hiking the Panorama Loop or Maze Loop. (这里有巨大的红色岩石和独特的树木,当你花几个小时在全景环或迷宫环徒步旅行时,你会感觉像是踏上了一个陌生的星球。)”、Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona下列段落中“For those adventurous and daring, it is recommended to hike the Bright Angel Trail and take the chance to see the canyon’s wintertime wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and bald eagles. (对于那些喜欢冒险和大胆的人,建议徒步 Bright Angel 小径,并有机会看到峡谷的冬季野生动物,包括骡鹿、麋鹿和秃鹰。)”和Virgin Islands National Park, St. John下列段落中“You can also hike inland to visit old sugar plantations, or venture out to the water to swim along with sea turtles and manta rays. (你也可以徒步到内陆去参观古老的甘蔗种植园,或者冒险去海边与海龟和蝠鲼一起游泳。)”可知,所有的公园都提到了徒步旅行。故选A项。 B In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else. Sometimes she knitted (编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project. “I am going to telephone seniors,” said my mother. “Every night? But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I listen.” I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch breath,” I said. My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s enthusiasm for the project. That evening, she settled on the sofa and dialed. For a while, I listened as she asked the woman on the other line about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I said, “Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert?” My mother grasped one of my hands and gave it a slight squeeze. “I’m the only person she talked to today.” It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement. Now, as my mother is nearing eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly calls she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty. 4. What is the mother’s purpose of calling the seniors? A. To care about their life. B. To know what they eat for dinner. C. To make them feel less lonely. D. To teach them how to make desserts. 5. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. They will talk all the time on the phone. B. They will blame others’ wrong doings. C. They will be tired of listening to others. D. They will make you feel really satisfied. 6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. The author started to telephone seniors as her mother. B. The author realized the value of her mother’s efforts. C. The author’s mother preferred to live alone. D. The author’s mother still remains disconnected to the world. 7. What is the suitable title for the passage? A. Call parents often, love them always B. Mother’s evenings C. A new project D. Nightly calls, lifeline calls 【答案】4. C 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第二段中的““It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I listen.”(“没关系,”她说。“重要的是我倾听。”)”以及第三段中的“My mother grasped one of my hands and gave it a slight squeeze. “I’m the only person she talked to today.”(妈妈抓住我的一只手,轻轻捏了一下。“我是她今天唯一和她说话的人。”)”可知,老年人一天中只有作者的母亲给他打电话,由此可以推断,老年人很孤单,所以母亲作为一个倾听者给老年人打电话就是为了不让老人们减少一些他们的孤独。故选C项。 【5题详解】 词义猜测题。根据空前的“She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely.(如果她感到孤独,她有朋友和我的两个姐姐可以打电话。)” 故选A项。 根据最后一段中的“It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement.(我花了三十多年的时间才完全理解这句话的含义。)”以及“I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.(我意识到我母亲的电话是确保居家老年人与世界保持联系的生命线。没有她,他们的世界将是空的。)”可知,作者终于在30年后明白了母亲这样做是让更多的老人与世界关联,不让老人觉得自己的世界太孤单,由此可推断出作者明白了母亲这样做的价值和意义。故选B项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据首段中的“In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else.(在我的童年时代,我的母亲在晚上为别人做一些事情。)”和“Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project.(因此,有一天晚上,当我母亲宣布她承担了一个新项目时,我并不感到惊讶。)”以及最后一段中的“I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.(我意识到我母亲的电话是确保居家老年人与世界保持联系的生命线。没有她,他们的世界将是空的。)”并结合全文的内容可知,作者的母亲晚上给老年人打电话成了老年人与世界联系的生命线,让他们不会觉得太孤单,综上所述,本文的标题为“夜间通话,生命线通话”符合文章主题。故选D项。 C “Creativity is the key to a brighter future” say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children. If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have the product that we now think greatly important: a new type of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their working time just thinking about and developing new ideas. Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence (智力). The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something. Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can gain information but can't recognize ways to use it in new situations. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems. It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it's choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should try to let them decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble. 8. What did the company where Drew once worked learn from its mistake? A. People should be discouraged to think freely. B. It should encourage people to work a longer time. C. People will do better if they pay all attention to their work. D. People should spend some of their working time thinking creatively. 9. What can we know from the passage about creativity? A. It is something that most people are born with. B. It is something that has nothing to do with intelligence at all. C. It is a way of using what one has learned to work out new problems. D. It is something that is not important to the life in the future at all. 10. Why don't schools try to encourage creativity? A. They don't attach importance to creativity education. B. They don't want their students to make mistakes. C. They pay no attention to examination marks. D. They think it impossible to develop creativity in class. 11. What should the parents do when their children decide how to spend their money? A. Allow them to have a try. B. Try to help them as much as possible. C. Take no notice of whatever they do. D. Order them to spend the least money. D 9. C 10. A 11. 根据文章第二段“And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their working time just thinking about and developing new ideas.(他的前公司从错误中吸取了教训。现在,它鼓励人们把15%的工作时间花在思考和发展新想法上。)”可知,Drew的前公司从错误中吸取了教训,认为花时间思考和开发新的想法是很有必要的。故选D项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something.(创造力是指利用所拥有的资源来产生对某事有益的新想法。)” 根据文章第四段“With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers.(随着对考试结果的高度关注以及阅读、写作和数学技能的发展,许多教育工作者放弃了寻找正确答案的创造力。)” 故选A项。 根据文章最后一段“As children grow older, parents should try to let them decide how to use their time or spend their money. (随着孩子年龄的增长,父母应该试着让他们决定如何利用时间或花钱。)”可知,父母应该试着让孩子自己决定如何利用他们的时间或花钱。故选A项。 D What is a barrier? It usually refers to an obstacle or a difficulty that prevents you from achieving something. Whether it was in your past, or you’ re presently facing one, you have to resolve it. While many people avoid barriers, deny their existence or let barriers control themselves, what stand you take on barriers will define the outcome of whether you rise from the challenge, or remain stuck in it. Here are some more great things to love about barriers. First of all, barriers give you motivations. Sometimes barriers can reset your goals. You might be faced with setbacks or difficulties, you’ re forced to re-think, and re-examine your path. You may end up focusing on something new and exciting. Or, you may concentrate on something that you otherwise wouldn’t have if not for the particular setback. By having to overcome an obstacle, you’ll be fulfilling a purpose, rather than just going through the motions. Also, barriers prepare you for the unexpected. They serve as guides for where to go next. Even though barriers can bring out many negative emotions in us, such as frustration, anger, or sadness, it’s important to realize that they don’t stop you from reaching your intended goals. Instead, they, in a way, give you time to stop and think if perhaps there is a new and better path to take and what you can prepare for what will happen along the way. Barriers shift your perspective. Barriers, more often than not, are unavoidable. Life will never stop throwing you new barriers. So, the best thing to do is know how to better see and approach these obstacles, and transform them into opportunities for self-improvement. The more you’re able to see barriers as being an advantage to your life, the better you’ll be at managing them. It will be rewarding to accept barriers, which will make you constantly change and adapt to new situations, thus allowing you to grow into a better version of yourself. 12. What is the determining factor of the outcome when facing barriers? A. Your specific goals. B. Your own attitude. C. Your diverse preparations. D. Your strong will power. 13. Which of the following is true about barriers? A. They bring you positive emotions. B. They prevent you from realizing your goals. C. They are avoidable if you prepare for them well. D. They enable you to view things in a different way. 14. What does the underlined word “approach” in paragraph 4 mean? A. To cope with. B. To go over. C. To come near to sb. D. To speak to sb about sth. 15. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Life is always throwing us barriers. B. Barriers are double-edged swords. C. Embracing barriers benefits a lot. D. Meeting barriers is actually avoidable. B 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第一段中“While many people avoid barriers, deny their existence or let barriers control themselves, what stand you take on barriers will define the outcome of whether you rise from the challenge, or remain stuck in it.”(当许多人回避障碍,否认它们的存在或让障碍控制自己时,你对障碍的立场将决定你是从挑战中崛起,还是陷入困境。)以及倒数第二段中“So, the best thing to do is know how to better see and approach these obstacles, and transform them into opportunities for self-improvement. The more you’re able to see barriers as being an advantage to your life, the better you’ll be at managing them.”(所以,最好的办法就是知道如何更好地看待和处理这些障碍,并将它们转化为自我提升的机会。 根据第二段中“You might be faced with setbacks or difficulties, you’ re forced to re-think, and re-examine your path.”(你可能会遇到挫折或困难,你被迫重新思考,重新审视你的道路。)以及第三段中“Instead, they, in a way, give you time to stop and think if perhaps there is a new and better path to take and what you can prepare for what will happen along the way.”(相反,在某种程度上,它们会给你时间停下来思考是否有一条新的更好的道路可以走,以及你可以为沿途发生的事情做些什么准备。) 根据第四段中“Life will never stop throwing you new barriers.”(生活永远不会停止给你设置新的障碍。)以及划线单词句中“and transform them into opportunities for self-improvement.”(并将它们转化为自我提升的机会。) 故选A项。 根据文章大意以及最后一段“It will be rewarding to accept barriers, which will make you constantly change and adapt to new situations, thus allowing you to grow into a better version of yourself.”(接受障碍是有益的,这会让你不断改变和适应新的情况,从而让你成长为一个更好的自己。) Ask a group of kids about their favorite part of the school day and many will talk about something that happened at recess Maybe they finally made it across the monkey bars. Maybe somebody kicked the ball over the fence. Maybe a fruit tree in a neighboring yard started to drop apples on the playground. ____16____. It’s true not just according to kids, but also to adults who study recess for kids. Whether they’re inventing a new game or sitting under a tree, kids need a break — or several of them — during the school day. Why kids need recess ____17____. You need time away to process (处理) it. Besides, physical activity that involves arms and legs — running, climbing, crawling — builds new neural(神经的) connections, which helps kids regulate their emotions (情感). Studies show that after recess children are more attentive in class, perform better and have fewer emotional problems. How much recess kids should get “Ideally, children should get four 15-minute recesses every day”, says Debbie Rhea, a professor from Texas Christian University, who advocates (提倡) for outdoor play in schools. ____18____. It is noted that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recently expanded (扩展) the idea to encourage recess for all students, including those in middle and high school. ____19____ In addition to simply providing enough time for recess, schools should teach skills that will make recess more successful. For instance, letting kids run fast will help them develop coordination (协调性). Maybe running up the slide (滑梯) is not as unsafe as it looks. ____20____. To allow children to take reasonable risks with their bodies is also a wise move. A. How to make recess better B. Who should help kids at recess C. This suggestion has been widely accepted D. Any one of these things is a marker of a good recess E. You can’t have your brains go hours at a time to store information F. We wouldn’t have kids sitting there for math or reading for long hours G. And even falling is something kids need to practice to avoid getting badly hurt 【答案】16. D 17. E 18. C 19. A 20. 【16题详解】 上文“Maybe they finally made it across the monkey bars. Maybe somebody kicked the ball over the fence. Maybe a fruit tree in a neighboring yard started to drop apples on the playground.(也许他们终于爬过了单杠。也许有人把球踢过了栅栏。也许邻居家院子里的一棵果树开始在操场上掉苹果。)”列举了孩子们的课间休息可能会做的一些事情,D选项“Any one of these things is a marker of a good recess.(这些事情中的任何一件都是一个良好休息的标志)”是对这些事例的总结,句中“these things”指代上文中所描述的三件事,上下文语意连贯。故选D。 【17题详解】 小标题“Why kids need recess (孩子们为什么需要课间休息)”提出问题。E项“You can’t have your brains go hours at a time to store information(你不能让你的大脑一次工作几个小时来存储信息)”和下文“You need time away to process (处理) it.(你需要时间来处理它。)” 【18题详解】 上文““Ideally, children should get four 15-minute recesses every day”, says Debbie Rhea, a professor from Texas Christian University, who advocates (提倡) for outdoor play in schools.(“理想情况下,孩子们每天应该有四次15分钟的休息时间,”德克萨斯州基督教大学的教授Debbie Rhea说,她倡导在学校进行户外活动)”提出德克萨斯州基督教大学的教授Debbie Rhea的建议:在学校进行户外活动。下文“It is noted that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recently expanded (扩展) the idea to encourage recess for all students, including those in middle and high school.(值得注意的是,美国疾病控制与预防中心最近扩大了这一理念,鼓励所有学生休息,包括初高中学生。)” 句中的“This recommendation”指代上文的建议;“has been widely accepted”照应下文“expanded the idea”。故选C。 【19题详解】 设空处是本段小标题,根据下文“In addition to simply providing enough time for recess, schools should teach skills that will make recess more successful. For instance, letting kids run fast will help them develop coordination (协调性).(除了提供足够的休息时间外,学校还应该教授使休息更成功的技巧。例如,让孩子跑得快有助于他们发展协调能力)”可知,本段主要讲有课间休息时间还不够,还需要提升课间休息品质。A选项“How to Make Recess Better.(如何让休息变得更好)”概括了本段主要内容,可作为小标题。故选A。 【20题详解】 上文“Maybe running up the slide (滑梯) is not as unsafe as it looks. (也许滑滑梯并不像看起来那么不安全。)”提到滑滑梯的安全性,下文“To allow children to take reasonable risks with their bodies is also a wise move.(允许孩子们用他们的身体承担合理的风险也是一个明智的举动。)” G选项“And even falling is something kids need to practice to avoid getting badly hurt(甚至摔倒也是孩子们需要练习的事情,以避免受到严重伤害)”承上启下,由“在滑滑梯上可能摔倒”过渡的“允许孩子们用他们的身体承担合理的风险”这一观点。 Standing on the top of Mount Tai, I watched the sun rising through the cloud and taking its place in the sky. My father used to have a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respected him and was indeed skilled at doing some farm work, I didn’t agree that I should automatically follow in my father’s footsteps. When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father’s friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I pushed the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding to his previous idea. Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I frequently visited Tom’s airport. Gradually, I got familiar with every button and switch on the air craft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill a plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot. This time I would not hide my desire any more. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With my father present at the graduation ceremony, I, as the “Best Pilot”, delivered a speech. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 This time I would not hide my desire any more. Determined to follow my heart, I explained to my father how I felt. I told him that I wanted to go to a college to learn to fly instead of being a farmer. After saying this, I waited nervously for his reaction. To my surprise, he approved my request, and he told me he was moved by my perseverance. With his support and my efforts, I was admitted into my ideal college. With my father present at the graduation ceremony, I, as the “Best Pilot”, delivered a speech. In my speech, I shared with the audience my story about how a teenager realized his dream. Faced with difficulties, I took a path that led me do something that needed passion, training and practice. I also owed my success to my father’s support. Without his understanding, I couldn’t have pursued my dream. At the end of my speech, I spotted my father’s watery eyes, and said, “Dad, I made it!” His face lit up with pride. 词汇激活 行为类 ①发表演讲:deliver a speech/give a talk/present a lecture ②实现梦想:realize one’s dream/achieve one’s dream ③注意到:spot/notice 情感类 ①令某人惊讶的是:to one’s surprise/to one’s amazement ②湿润的眼睛:watery eyes/moist eyes/wet eyes 【点睛】【高分句型1】I told him that I wanted to go to a college to learn to fly instead of being a farmer.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) 【高分句型2】Faced with difficulties, I took a path that led me do something that needed passion, training and practice.(运用了that引导的限定性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 宣城中学2024~2025学年度第一学期高一年级10月月考 英语试题 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 How much is the shirt? A. Hiking. B. Skiing. C. Swimming. D. Hunting. B In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else. Nightly calls, lifeline calls C “Creativity is the key to a brighter future,” say education and business experts. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. A They don't attach importance to creativity education. D What is a barrier? Barriers more often than not, are unavoidable. 13. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
