Time flies when you play on your smartphone. But when you get down to the real business of
work and study, one hour feels like a year. Why are we so attracted by smartphones but easily bored
by studying?
九年英语随堂练习(二) 第2页 共6页人教版
It all boils down to something small and hard to see: dopamine (多巴) .Dopamine is a
'pleasure chemical" that makes people feel good. Our brains give it out when we eat yummy food,
after we exercise or when we get a prize.
Compared with studying, playing on smartphones causes our brains to give out more dopamine.
For example, checking your phone for a text leads to a 40o percent increase in dopamine. But why?
When we visit social media, we don't know what we'll see next, or who will give opinions about
things we post. This "magic of maybe", makes the dopamine system active. We get excited wondering
if we have messages from our friends. When our expectations are met, dopamine is given out.
And to find more dopamine, we continue checking our phones. Studying doesn't provide such
magic. Without this excitement, we get bored much more easily.
Can we do something to change that? According to scientists, apps can become less attractive if
we turn off notifications or change the screen colors to black and white. We can also set time limits on
apps to avoid overusing them.
"As for studying, you could check your progress daily or weekly and reward yourself for it", said
Daniel Wong, writer of The Happy Student,
"You could also search for interesting topics connected
with your textbook. Use what you've learned to make an influence in the real world. This will make
knowledge much more interesting to learn".
25. What might the underlined phrase "boils down to" mean in Paragraph 2?
C. leads to
B. turns out
A. results from
D. works out
26. When do people have more dopamine?
A. When they know what will happen next.
B. When they stay in a familiar environment.
C. When they get used to something
D. When their expectations are met.
27. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A. We are attracted by smartphones but easily bored by studying.
B. Our brains give dopamine out before we exercise or get a prize
C. The "magic of maybe" excites us when we receive messages.
D. Apps can become less attractive if we change the sound of notifications
28. Which of the following might Daniel Wong suggest to make learning interesting?
A. Setting time limits on everything you do.
B. Using what you lear from textbooks to do thing in real life.
C. Stopping playing and finding more interests in real life.
D. Reading the interesting part in your textbooks before reading the others

How can you combine(结合)games with English learning? The answer is a game app! Its players
must correctly guess a five - letter word with just six tries. You either win by guessing it or lose
because you run out of tries
The game has been popular with millions of players across the world. Every midnight, the game
app refreshes (翻新) its word of the day. For example, the answer for November 3rd is ALOUD.
and the answer for November 4th is OTHER
As you guess, the game gives you hints (提示).For example, if a letter is correct and in the right
place, it turns green. If the letter is not in the word, it turns gray, if the letter is part of the word but in
the wrong place, it turns yellow. These hints make the game into a puzzle
You need knowledge to win this game, not just luck. Every syllable(音节) in an English word
ncludes at least one vowel (元音), so finding vowels is a useful method. For example, in the word
'think", there is only one syllable and there is one vowel "i".
Several days ago, I played this game and found it very interesting. First, I guessed the word
"table". Only "a" was green. Then, I guessed "maker" and the "Y" turned yellow. In the end, I guessed
'carry" and I was correct!
The game app is not only a perfect game to have fun, but also an excellent tool to increase you
English vocabulary. Why not have a try in your spare time?
29. Which of the following words can't describe the game app?

A. Users can't play the game if they know little English
B. Every syllable in an English word includes only one vowel.
C. There is only one correct word in the game app every day.
D. The players can guess, a six - letter word with live tries

Can plants speak? Scientists are starting to discover that there are plenty of conversations going
on among peas and other plants.
Experiments by Novoplansky's team used pea plants standing in lines of pots. The central plan
in each line was the target. Each pea plant had two roots. On one side, the central plant had one root in
its own pot and the other connected to its closest neighbor, which connected to another neighbor, and
so on down the line. On the other side of the target plant, all the plants kept their both roots in their
own pots.
Later, the scientists dried up the soil in the central pot. Within 15 minutes, the dried- out plant
had closed up the tiny pores on its leaves to save water. What is surprising is that its two closest
neighbors with connected roots had also closed up their leaf pores. And after an hour, the message had
traveled down the whole row of connected plants, even though only one of them had experienced real
dryness. On the other side, where the plants' roots were not connected, all their pores remained open
What is the reward of sending a danger message to its neighbor? For one thing, its neighbor may
actually be part of him. When large plants have spread - out root systems, sending messages between
those roots might be a quick way to help others. Even if the roots next door are not part of the same
plant, there is a good chance they are related. Many plants, such as the grasses making up your yarc
come from the same parent.
Are pea plants the only talkative plants? The scientists have also discovered when poplar and
sugar maple trees are damaged, they send messages through the air that tell their neighbors. When
caterpillars eat the corn leaves, nearby corn plants start to make more self - defense molecules. And
when cotton plants are hurt by mites, neighboring plants make themselves more attractive to bugs tha
will eat those mites.
They may not be speaking with any sound, but do not let that fool you. The plants around us are
saying plenty.
33. Pea plants can talk with each other when their roots are
A. put into the soil
B. placed close enough
C. connected together
D. dried up in the soil
34.The central plant sends the danger message probably to
A. get some help from others
