Now, the website BookCrossing.com turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group. Members go on the site and register (注册) the books they own and would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number (标识号) to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure (冒险), traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it. Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says, "The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read. BookCrossing brings them together." Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it. People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-mails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated (更新) about where their books have been found. Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home. BookCrossing is popular with people who want to get back to the "real" and not the virtual (虚拟). The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred and thirty-five countries. 48. A.① B.② C.③ D.④ D Researchers from Radboud University Medical Center found that memory champions aren’t all that different from us. People with an average (普通的) memory can also greatly improve their memory ability by using what’s known as the “mind palace” method—the secret weapon(武器) of the fictional character Sherlock Holmes. To do this, you just need to picture a place you’re familiar (熟悉的) with, such as your study. Then, remember this place in as many details as possible, for this is your own mind palace. Suppose you want to remember a shopping list. You can start by spreading out all the items around your study in your mind. This means each item on your list is connected with the remembered place in your study. You travel to that remembered place as you think of the list. To explore the influence of this method on the brain, researchers gathered 51 volunteers with average memory levels and no extra memory training. After forty days of daily 30-minute training periods, volunteers doubled the number of words they could remember. Four months later, even without continuous training, their recall performance remained high. “Once you’re familiar with these methods and know how to use them, you can keep your performance high without much further training,” said Martin Dresler, professor from Radboud University Medical Center. Moreover, the training also influences the way our brain cells connect. After training, the way that the volunteers’ brain cells connect began to be like those of memory champions compared to scans taken before training. Researchers believe this could cause their increased memory. But what makes this research so fascinating(有极大吸引力的) is that it seems to prove that the talent to store things in your mind isn’t down to genes(基因). Dresler found there was no difference in brain structure between memory champions and common people, which means memory champions are not born with different brains. 54.What can we learn about Sherlock Holmes? A. He had an excellent memory. B. He invented the “mind palace” method. C. He always remembered his “mind palace”. D. He joined in the memory research. 55.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Write everything in your study down onto the list. B. A familiar place helps you remember the items on the list. C. Go to your familiar places with the list to train your memory. D. Connect one item on the list with something in your study. 56.What can we infer from the passage? A. The talent to store things in your mind has nothing to do with genes. B. Your memory ability can be improved by remembering all the items. C. Without continuous training, the volunteers’ memory went down rapidly. D. The way that the volunteers’ brain cells connect didn’t change after training. 57.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this passage? A. To invite readers to take part in a memory test. B. To give readers a number of practical tips. C. To inform readers of a latest scientific discovery. D. As a good communicator should be a good listener, five steps are towards good listening. The first step is cooperating(合作).How does a difficult person know that you're listening and understanding? In fact, it's through the way you look and sound while he is talking. You may help him to fully express his thoughts and feelings by nodding your head in agreement, making certain sounds of understanding. Repeat what's been said. By doing this, It means that you're listening to him carefully and that you think what he is saying is important. Having heard what he has to say, the next step is clarifying. At this point, you start to gather information about what is being communicated and find out what intention he is hoping to satisfy. The fourth step is to summarize(概括)what you've heard. This allows you to make sure that both you and the difficult person are on the same page. Having listened carefully, you've now arrived at the point of confirming with the person that he feels satisfied that his thoughts have been fully voiced. Ask if he feels understood. When enough sincere listening, questioning, and remembering are brought together, understanding is usually achieved and a difficult person becomes less difficult and more cooperative. Listen to understand Reason Difficult people hope they are heard and ___74___ when they express themselves ____75___on listening ※___76___ in agreement and make some sounds of understanding to cooperate. ※Repeat the ___77__ that you have heard. ※Collect information about the person’s expressions and find out his intention. ※Summarize what the person has said ※Confirm that the person gains satisfaction from speaking his thoughts.
