内容正文:

Nature Adapted from “Nature” by Ralph Waldo Emerson Reading and thinking Step I. Read three short poems and find out what the poets want to tell us. Then match each word in bold from the poems with its definition. If I had ever stepped into a garden in spring, I would not have missed the magnificence of flowere blooming, But mourning that they lasted only a few days now. If I lived on the moon, I would find peace in my eternal solitude, Observing life far away on Earth. If I were to surf in the ocean, I would dance on its infinite waves, And touch the horizon and stars. subjunctive mood Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 – April 27, 1882) was an American essayist, philosopher, poet, and a leader of the transcendentalist(超验主义) movement in the early 19th century. Emerson formulated and expressed the philosophy of Transcendentalism in his 1836 essay, Nature. Following this ground-breaking work, he gave a speech entitled The American Scholar in 1837, which Oliverc Wendell Holmes,Sr.considered to be America's"Intellectual Declaration of Independence. Step II. P4.3.Read the text and put the author's ideas into the correct order according to the text. 5.When in nature, a person feels connected to the plants that surround him. 3.Only someone who is a child at heart can really understand nature. 1.True solitude can be found by looking at the starry sky. 6.Nature itself does not produce feelings-people bring their feelings with them to nature. 2.A person is easier to be delighted by nature in childhood because the mind is open and simple then to the influence of natural objects. 4.When a person ventures into a forest, he will become young again. Step III.P4.4 Choose the best answers to the questions. Supporting sentences: .1.(para 1) I am not solitary while I read and write, though nobody is with me. 2. (para 4) The sun illuminates only the eye of the men, but shines into the eye and the heart of the child. 3.(para 5) Standing on the bare ground—my head bathed by the happy air, and lifted up into infinite space—all of my shallow egotism fades away. I become a transparent eyeball; I am nothing; I see all. Translation: 站在荒野上—我的头脑沐浴在欢快的空气中,升入无垠的空间—我所有浅薄的自我主义都消失殆尽。我变成了一枚透明的眼球。我不复存在,却又洞悉一切。 Supporting sentences: 4.(para8)To a man labouring under a burden, the heat of his own fire has sadness in it. Then there is a kind of contempt of the landscape felt by him who had just lost by death a dear friend. The sky is less grand as it shuts down over less worth in the population. Translation: 对于一个身负重担、辛苦劳作的人来说, 他的活力中带着悲伤。而对于一个刚刚永别挚友的人来说,他会觉得周遭的风景不值一顾。当天空对这些卑微的人落下帷幕时,它也就不再那么壮观了。 Step IV. Read the text again and answer the questions. 1 What kind of feelings did the author have when he went into nature? He feels perfect delight. 2 How does the author regard the relationship between humans and nature? Please find expressions from the text that show his point of view. He feels that there is a magical connection between humans and nature. For example, when he is walking in nature, he feels as though the vegetables are nodding to him, and the tree branches are waving at him. the transcendentalism Step V. Text analysis on P6 2. Personification is used to describe the following things. Find the words and phrases that show how they are personified in the text. 1. the stars: ___________________________________ 2. nature: _____________________________________ _____________________________________________ 3. the fields and woods: __________________________ 4. branches in the storm: _________________________ light the universe with their smile never wears a mean appearance; does not always wear holiday clothes; always wears the colours of the spirit nod to me waving Step V. Text analysis on P6 3 Find the metaphors and similes which are used to describe the following. 1 the air: __________________________________________ 2 how a person begins to feel younger:___________________ 3 how the author feels when looking up at the sky:__________ ___________________________________________________ A machine of incredible virtue As the snake casts off his skin I become a transparent eyeball Step VI. Discussion 1. Do you agree with the author’s view on the value of solitude? Why or why not? 2.Is it true that only some one who is a child at heart can really see and understand nature? 3.What is your own view on the relationship between humans and nature? Step VI. Discussion 1. Do you agree with the author’s view on the value of solitude? Why or why not? I think solitude is good for a time, to find peace and quietness, but to live a life of solitude is really hard. People are only complete when they are with others. 2.Is it true that only some one who is a child at heart can really see and understand nature? It assumes that understanding means the same as delight. However, there are other ways of understanding nature besides just delightfully. For example, someone that gets tired of life would turn to nature, where he/ she may find comfort. That is another way for adults to communicate with nature. 3.What is your own view on the relationship between humans and nature? To me, nature is to be used and enjoyed by people, and since it can be easily harmed, it also needs to be protected as a precious resource. Step VII. Language Focus 1 Step VII. Language Focus 1 Step VII. Language Focus 1 Step VIII. Critical thinking Emerson's philosophical thought is similar to which Chinese thinkers, writers or poets? Give some examples. Lao Tzu and Emerson‘s “Tao” and “Superspirit” :Laozi is the founder of the Taoist School in ancient China, and the core of his philosophy is “Tao”, which is an invisible and nameless source and law of the universe, emphasizing conformity to nature(顺应自然) and “ruling without doing anything”(无为而治). Emerson proposed the concept of the “oversoul,” the existence of a transcendent, universal spiritual entity(超越的、普遍的精神实体) in the universe that one can intuit(由直觉知道). Both emphasize the harmonious unity of man and nature and the importance of understanding the world through introspection and intuition(内省和直觉). Although Lao Tzu’s “Tao” and Emerson‘s “Superspirit” differ in their specific expressions, they both embody the pursuit of a deeper understanding of the universe and life. Emerson's philosophical thought is similar to which Chinese thinkers, writers or poets? Give some examples. Zhuangzi and Emerson‘s view of Nature: Zhuangzi is the representative figure of Taoism after Laozi, and his thought includes the emphasis on nature and individual freedom. Zhuangzi believed that man should conform to nature and pursue spiritual freedom and liberation. Emerson also advocated a return to nature, believing that nature is the teacher of the human soul, and people can find inspiration and spiritual nourishment in nature. Both embody(具体表现,体现) an emphasis on nature and the intrinsic value(内在价值) of the individual. The landscape blongs to the man who lookks at it. --Ralph Waldo Emerson $$
