I remember clearly watching my daughter figure out how to build a Lego house that would stand up on its own, and thinking: Look at this tiny architectural genius. But decades of research now suggest that we should not tell our children they’re “smart” when they do impressive things. When I first heard it, I felt instinctively annoyed. But after I dug into the research, I was persuaded. It all goes back to something called “growth” mindset (心态), a term developed and popularized by Carol Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford. Professor Dweck believes that we can change our abilities through effort and strategy. The alternative to a growth mindset is a “fixed” mindset — the idea that our abilities are inborn and can’t be changed. When we praise our children for being “smart,” based on victories like doing well on a test, we’re unconsciously encouraging them to believe that if they do poorly or make mistakes, they’re not smart. It’s not just what we say that matters, but how we tolerate our children’s failures. A 2016 study by Dweck showed that parents’ “failure mind-sets” affect their children more than their views on intelligence. In other words, if parents think that failure is shameful, their children are more likely to be afraid of making mistakes. The study concludes that everyone is actually a mixture of fixed and growth mindsets, continually evolving with experience. Whatever we say or don’t say to our kids, the key is to get them more comfortable with failures big or small. It’s helpful for kids to understand that you make mistakes and learn how they happen. When you chat with them, you can describe what you learned, or how you strategized a solution. “You don’t have to deny you have negative emotional reactions,” Dweck said. “We, as a society, don’t do that enough because we feel embarrassed when we make mistakes.” But if we discuss our missteps more and explain how we overcame them, our children can learn to do the same. 4.What did the author initially think of the research’s advice? A.Convincing. B.Advanced. C.Inaccessible. D.Unacceptable. 5.According to the Dweck, children with a growth mindset tend to believe ______. A.smartness is the key to success B.difficulties in daily life teach them a lot C.their abilities can be improved through hard work D.they are impressive due to their good grades on tests 6.What does Dweck suggest parents do? A.Affect the children via their own experience. B.Hide their negative feelings from children. C.Remind children to avoid making mistakes. D.Pay attention to develop children’s intelligence. 7.What does the passage mainly tell us? A.The effect of a fixed mindset on children. B.“Being smart” doesn’t prepare kids for failure. C.The importance of being smart in family interaction. D.“Being smart” is the power of praising in children’s growth. One day my Ph. D.adviser called me into his office, saying I needn’t bring my notebook. Puzzled, I followed him and sat down. After 15 minutes of listing positive things about my academic capabilities, he looked me in the eye and said, “You are fired from the lab.” I stared back, blinking in disbelief. “Is he joking?” I wondered. “How is this possible?” The first few days after my dismissal were especially difficult. One day all I could do was sit on a beach, crying as I looked out across the Mediterranean Sea and wondered what I should do. Around that time, I watched Dasvidaniya, a Bollywood movie that’s about a man who is told that he has 3 months to live. He responds by changing his attitude to life and setting out to make the most of his remaining months. Even though it is a common saying, one line from the movie stuck out to me: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” What kind of “lemonade” could I make out of my current situation? My desire to complete a Ph. D.was never in doubt. After much reflection, I told myself that one failed attempt was not the end of the world, and that I needed to give it another try. With renewed confidence, I emailed prospective advisers and applied to other programs. Fortunately, I landed an offer from a Ph. D.program in Italy. I accepted it and relocated to Europe, happy that my goal of completing a Ph. D.was alive once again. I’m thankful that I didn’t give up on my dream and that I found another professor willing to take me on. So, if you find yourself in a similar situation and life gives you lemons, ask yourself: “How can I make lemonade?” 8.What is the author’s feeling after hearing his Ph. D.adviser’ s words? A.Regretful. B.Amazed. C.Pleased. D.Angry. 9.What does the sentence “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” in Paragraph 2 imply? A.Lemonade is often better than lemon. B.Life is like lemonade made from lemon. C.You should try lemonade made from lemon. D.Transforming the bad situation is a better choice. 10.Why did the author feel happy once again? A.He watched an encouraging Bollywood movie. B.He could achieve his goal of completing a Ph. D. C.He could earn his living in Europe in the future. D.He found a good professor in the Ph. D.program. 11.What is the text mainly about? A.Why lost my job in a Ph. D.program. B.The hard time I suffered in Europe. C.How I moved on after my dismissal. D.A vital movie I met in my dilemma. In the current economic downturn, many American schools are adding a new subject to the curriculum(课程); financial literacy. One program in Virginia even gets students out of the classroom for a day to learn how far their money will go in the real world. What looks like a shopping mall is actually an educational field trip experience for a group of young people. Finance Park is a special facility where students apply what they have been taught in class about money management. “They become, essentially, adults for the day,” says Alice Reilly, social studies coordinator for Fairfax County Public Schools. “They are asked to develop a budget for 18 line items that you and I might have in our budget; things like utilities, insurance, groceries, housing.” Each budget item is represented by a storefront where students collect an option sheet. Students must refer to a card that shows their income and their family size, when they choose what to buy. There’s also a stock ticker so students can keep track of shares in their portfolios(投资组合). The facility opened last year in Fairfax, Virginia. It is the fifteenth Finance Park built in the last decade by Junior Achievement USA, a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing young people for financial success. “Since the financial crisis, the demand for Finance Parks around the country has grown exponentially," says Ed Grenier, president of the Washington, DC chapter. "We have a number under way in the planning and building stages.” Financial literacy has only recently become part of the regular curriculum in Fairfax County.“Some students, some teachers, some schools did it, but now it is much more systematic," Reilly says, "and it is much more consistent to ensure that all students get this background information.” That is why every eighth grade student in Fairfax County will eventually spend a day here.Thirteen-year-old Sam says she has learned an important life lesson. “I didn’t know how expensive everything would be.” Anthony, also 13, is looking forward to telling his parents what he learned. “I’ll probably tell them I want to stay a kid a little longer and take my time to become an adult.” This isn’t the end of financial studies for Anthony and the other students here. Virginia is one of 13 states which requires students to take a financial education in high school in order to graduate. 12.What is the aim of this Finance Park? A.To raise enough money for the secondary schools in Virginia. B.To enable students to apply money management knowledge to practice. C.To provide students in Virginia with special chances for Advanced Placement. D.To direct students in Washington,D.C. to learn more about money management. 13.Who is expected to spend a whole day in the Finance Park? A.Young people all over Virginia. B.Junior students in Washington,D. C.C. Eighth graders in Fairfax County. D.Eighth graders' parents in Virginia. 14.What can we learn from this passage? A.Extra curriculum is necessary in secondary schools. B.Fairfax County Public Schools set a good example. C.An organization helps youth in U.S. for financial success. D.Financial Literacy is very popular in Washington,D.C. 15.It can be inferred from the passage that _________________. A.Alice Reilly developed a budget for 18 items in the Finance Park B.ED Grenier was against building more finance parks in U.S C.Sam did quite well in  managing his budge in the Finance Park D.Anthony came to know that adult life wasn't as good as expected 二、七选五(本大题共5小题,共10分) Just Dance, the popular dance platform by Ubisoft is working on becoming more and more accessible. Sympathy is wonderful, and life is like a roller coaster. It has ups and downs. The “downs” that should have been his have been transferred to someone else — Susie. She tries to help, but she is now the focus of being laughed at and is ignored despite the fact that she is apologizing all the time. Some unfriendly boys even tell her to get out. “You’ve done enough, you stupid,” they say rudely. Finally, at the end of the day, the boy and Susie head for the bus stop. As they are waiting for the bus, the boy walks over to Susie and looks at her into her eyes. “I just can’t thank you enough, he says in a very low voice. The girl makes no answer with a forgiven smile on her face. Then the boy whispers, “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?” “This time,” Susie whispers back, “I wet my pants once too.” The boy then knows that she remembers how she felt in that condition and she just understands him as if she were in it and tries to help as much as possible.
