Passage 1
Rabbit is the fourth of the 12 Chinese zodiac (生肖) parts, in the order of Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit,
Dragon, Snake, Horse, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Because rabbits are gentle and smart, they are
very popular with people from all over the world.
In China, rabbits are thought to be a lucky sign. That’s because rabbits can have many babies in
the nature, even in terrible conditions. In the past, the better their life would be.
The rabbit can make people think of the moon. Ancient Chinese people believed a rabbit was
living on the moon. It is called the Moon Rabbit and helps Chang’e, a goddess who is widely known
in China, to make medicine.
Similarly, rabbits are seen to be lucky in Western culture. There are some traditions about how
to get the rabbit’s good luck for yourself. For example, a rabbit’s foot is one of the most famous
symbols of good luck and the person who holds it is supposed to be lucky. Also, people usually say
the word “rabbit” on the first morning of every month. They’re looking forward to bringing
themselves good luck for this whole month.
Now it’s 2023, the Year of the Rabbit. Hope you are always lucky this year!
1.Which year will be the next Year of the Rabbit?
2.Why are rabbits very popular with people from all over the world?
3.What does the Moon Rabbit help Chang’e do on the moon?
4.Do you like rabbits? Why or why not?

A dance drama called The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting was shown on CCTV’s
Spring Festival Gala. It became popular overnight.
According to CCTV, this dance got the idea from the 900-year-old Chinese painting—A
Panoruma of Rivers and Mountains(《千里江山图》), which was created by Song Dynasty painter
Wang Ximeng when he was about 18 years old.
A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains is the only extant(尚存的)work by Wang. Now the
painting is at the Palace Museum. It has been on show to the public only four times since 1949. The
11.9-meter-long painting records people’s lives and the natural scenery(景色)including mountains,
rivers and villages of that time.
The dance show tells the story of a researcher who has worked hard to study the painting. By
chance, the researcher travels back in time to see the moment when Wang was about to finish the
work. As the painting was finished, the researcher guides the audience(观众)into the world of the
painter. The dance show provides the audience with a new experience to better learn about the work.
It shows the process of how painting is done.
The dancers each had a different hairstyle, which looked like a mountain rock. The clothes that
they wore were color of green and blue, which is also poetic show of the mountains and rivers. When
the dancers danced beautifully, the audience seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and
rivers. Huge mountains and rivers are coming to life! More than a thousand years later, green
mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.
In recent years, more and more modern shows with Chinese traditional culture have received a
warm welcome, especially among young people. They show great love to Chinese culture and are
proud of it.
1.How old was Wang Ximeng when he created the painting?
2.What does the painting record?
3.What does the dancers’ hairstyle look like?
4.Would you like to watch the dance show? Why or why not?

Passage 3
Tim Berners-Lee is not the most famous inventor in the world. However, his invention has
changed our lives.
He was born in London, England in 1955. When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in
playing with electronic things. He studied science at Oxford University. He made his first computer
from an old television at the age of 21. Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they
were much bigger than now. He worked in England then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in
two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so
quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It
was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again. It took a
lot of time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information .
Tim also forgot things easily.
Could a computer work like a brain? Could it “talk” to other computers?
There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the
World Wide Web (WWW) all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to
each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the
World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that. Tim Berners-Lee doesn’t think he did
anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to
put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is
today.
Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He
now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for
everyone to use. Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today
1.What was Tim Berners-Lee interested in when he was young?
2.When did Tim Berners-Lee make his first computer?
3.What did Tim Berners-Lee invent all by himself when he was 34 years old?

was 18, he began teaching history at university. He was younger than many of his students and any
other teacher.
Jean was very interested in ancient Egypt and in 1821 he began to study the Rosetta Stone (罗
塞塔石). A group of soldiers found the stone at Rosetta when Jean was still a young boy. It lay under
the sand for hundreds of the years before the soldiers dug it up. There was a lot of strange writing on
the stone. The writing was a message in three languages. One of the languages was ancient Egyptian.
No one could read it at that time. But Jean worked out its secret.
The ancient Egyptian was not a language with letters and words like English. It was full of signs.
According to many experts, these signs represented things and ideas, Jean did not completely agree.
