B On a cold morning in May, I received a fascinating email from a high school friend. inviting me to a 10-day all-female surfing adventure in Portugal. The offer was irresistible, and I instantly knew my answer was yes. The trip seemed simple enough. Ten women, ranging from 30 to 45 years old, all strangers, will gather on the Portuguese coast to embrace the challenge of surfing the Atlantic waves. As a travel enthusiast, I quickly sought permission from my boss for this once-in-a- lifetime journey. Through my 33 years, I’ve observed a common adult tendency: we often limit ourselves to refining skills we already possess. There’s a certain pride in improving our expertise, becoming increasingly knowledgeable in our chosen fields, yet unintentionally, this focus often leaves other skills undeveloped and leads to neglecting other areas of potential growth. Two days later, I arrived in Ericeira, a charming surf town, where I met my surfing group. Despite our different personalities and backgrounds, we were all united in a persistent desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle and grow. The shores at Ericeira, where the beginners learn to surf, are shallow and covered with slippery rocks. They make for softer waves but are difficult to navigate (驾驭). Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air. Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked. Learning a new skill taught me the humbleness that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on. While surfing might not be my calling, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life, to step outside of my comfort zone and to never stop believing in myself. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try. 4. Why did the writer decide to go on a surfing trip to Portugal? A. To get better at skills they already had. B. To complete some work tasks in Portugal. C. To face a new challenge and pick up a new skill. D. To reconnect with an old friend from high school. 5. How does the writer feel about adults concentrating on just one area of expertise? A. It limits one’s skills. B. It’s crucial for doing well in one’s career. C It encourages creativity and exploration. D. It messes with balancing work and personal life. 6. Which of the following words best describe the writer’s experience with surfing? A. Calming but unforeseeable. B. Demanding and annoying. C. Challenging but fulfilling. D. Dull and uneventful. 7. What insight did the writer get from her surfing adventure? A. The significance of specializing in one particular area. B. The advantages of traveling with people you don’t know. C. The necessity of getting formal training for all new abilities. D. The importance of stretching your boundaries and experimenting. C Are you an open book, your face broadcasting every passing emotion, or more of a poker face, not showing what you are feeling? Scientists at Nottingham Trent University say that wearing your heart on your face, could actually give you a significant social advantage. The study, led by Eithne Kavanagh, a research fellow at NTU’s School of Social Sciences, involving over 1,300 participants, noticed striking variations in how much people moved their faces during conversations. Importantly, this expressiveness emerged as a stable individual quality. People displayed similar levels of facial expressiveness across different contexts, with different social partners, and even over time periods up to four months. The researchers say that facial expressiveness is linked to personality, with more agreeable individuals displaying more lively faces. Facial expressiveness can also translate into concrete social benefits. In a negotiation task, more expressive individuals are more likely to secure a larger slice of a reward. The researchers suggest that for agreeable folks, dynamic facial expressions may serve as a tool for building good relationship and smoothing over conflicts. Across the board, the results point to facial expressiveness serving an“ affiliative (亲和) function,” or a social glue that develops liking and smoother interactions. Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more “readable,” suggesting that a lively face makes one’s intentions and mental states easier for others to decipher. Beyond frequency of facial movements, people who employ facial expressions more strategically to suit social goals, such as looking friendly in a greeting, are also more well- liked. The findings challenge the “poker face” common belief that a still and unemotional appearance is always most advantageous. Instead, they suggest that for most people, allowing one’s face to mirror inner states and intentions can invite warmer reactions. As the researchers conclude, “Being facially expressive is socially advantageous.” So, the next time you catch yourself making lines on your forehead, or flashing a smile, know that your face just might be working overtime on your behalf. 8. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about concerning the study? A. Its impact. B. Its findings. C. Its limitations. D. Its significance. 9. What may facial expressiveness serve as in negotiation settings? A. A way to frighten competitors. B. A method to hide personalities. C. A tool to show personal quality. D. A strategy to settle disagreement. 10. What does the underlined word “decipher” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Copy. B. Overlook. C. Remember D. Interpret. 11. What may the author advise based on the findings of the study? A. Always wearing a still face. B. Learning to be an open book. C. Speaking out inner emotions. D. Forcing a smile through tears. D Here’s something that’s surprisingly common: people who strongly advocate moral or noble ideals, but regularly use them to justify attacking and mistreating others — something which is surely neither moral nor noble. Isn’t this inconsistent? How can someone loudly insist they’re a good person while behaving in ways that totally contradict this, without mentally short-circuiting in some way? The answer is that there are many psychological and neurological (神经的) processes that allow people to engage in this behaviour that, for want of a better label, we’ll call ‘virtue bullying’. A lot of virtue bullying could be seen as virtual bullying, which is to say it’s a lot easier online. We’ve all seen Facebook posts that make some simple, morally solid claim, such as “I support victims of [the latest disaster]”, which are then followed by something like “Share if you agree. I bet 97 per cent of you won’t.” Such posts are basically saying, “I’m a good, moral person ... and I’ll criticise you until you agree.” This isn’t the behaviour of a good person. But it’s not internet-specific. Wanting to protect children is a good, moral aim, but consider all the books and shows banned or attacked in the US under the cover of protecting children. Indeed, throughout history, there have been many instances where individuals who considered themselves good and moral have committed terrible acts. But why do good people treat others badly? Our brains work hard to enhance our self-esteem (自尊). A 2011 study found that an effective way to strengthen our self-esteem is to attack others, so our status (地位) becomes relatively higher. So, thinking you’re good while attacking others can be a very instinctive (本能的) process, sadly. For humans, our morals are a key aspect of our identity and an important factor in our decision-making. We’re naturally protective of our identities and decision-making. If these things are rooted in morals and beliefs, we’ll be defensive towards anyone who poses a threat to them. This can lead to what seems to be inconsistent behaviours. Ultimately, for all the explanations offered here, it should be acknowledged that some people are just not nice. How you deal with such people is up to you. 12. Why does the author raise questions in paragraph 2? A. To express his doubts. B. To present an assumption. C. To display a phenomenon. D. To introduce points for discussion. 13. What is virtue bullying? A. Advocating for noble causes online. B. Using moral ideals to justify mistreating others. C. Forcing others to agree with one’s moral claims. D. Attacking people who disagree with one’s moral beliefs. 14. What did the 2011 study find about self-esteem and attacking others? A. Attacking others boosts self-esteem. B. Self-esteem is linked with social status. C. People with higher social status attack others more often. D. Boosting self-esteem reduces the desire to attack others. 15. What role do morals play in our self-image and decision-making? A. Morals vary with them. B. Morals threaten them. C. Morals shape them. D. Morals assess them. When we are faced with a crisis, or if we have an important decision to make, many of us fall into the trap of over-thinking. We had both been nominated (提名) for the Youth Excellence Program, an honor and a chance almost every student was crazy about. That weekend, Alex and I sat in my living room, carefully completing the program application. We each aimed to show we had all qualities the program valued: academic excellence, leadership, community service, integrity, and civic responsibility. I detailed my devotion to challenging courses, while Alex described his volunteer work at the local food bank. We left no stone unturned, fully confident in our joint success. The following day, we submitted our applications to the teacher hopefully. Weeks passed. Then one day, I received a letter about the project. I rushed out of the classroom and opened it. I felt a stab of sadness right in my heart: my name was not on the list. At that very moment, I saw Alex came jogging over, waving his letter with a beaming smile. It was clear he had news that contrasted with my own. Without hesitation, I turned away to avoid him. I knew he was eager to share his joy. Perhaps, he even had planned to celebrate the good news together with me. But I just couldn’t face it: they picked him but refused me. How could fate be so unjust? Anger and despair just blinded me. That afternoon, on the school bus, I sat alone and avoided eye contact with Alex. When the bus arrived at my street, I just jumped off, without saying goodbye or smiling to him. I hurried home, thrusting (塞) the letter into my mom’s hands. I buried my face in the cushions, sobbing uncontrollably as waves of heartache swept over me. From that day on, I didn’t talk to Alex. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, Mom talked with me, saying Alex wasn’t the one to blame. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2025届高三9月月考英语试卷 考试时间: 120 分钟 第一部分 听力(共两节, 满分30分) 第一节(共5小题; 每小题1.5分, 满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. C. It encourages creativity and exploration. D. It messes with balancing work and personal life. 6. Which of the following words best describe the writer’s experience with surfing? A. Calming but unforeseeable. B. Demanding and annoying. C. Challenging but fulfilling. D. Dull and uneventful. 7 What insight did the writer get from her surfing adventure? A. The significance of specializing in one particular area. B. The advantages of traveling with people you don’t know. C. The necessity of getting formal training for all new abilities. D. The importance of stretching your boundaries and experimenting. C 5. A 6. C 7. 根据文章第二段“Ten women, ranging from 30 to 45 years old, all strangers, will gather on the Portuguese coast to embrace the challenge of surfing the Atlantic waves.(十位年龄从30岁到45岁不等的陌生女性将聚集在葡萄牙海岸,迎接在大西洋海浪中冲浪的挑战。)”和文章倒数第二段“Learning a new skill taught me the humbleness that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on.(学习一项新技能教会了我在新事物上做得不好时的谦卑,以及当你最终掌握了你一直在做的事情时产生的自豪感。)” 根据文章第四段“There’s a certain pride in improving our expertise, becoming increasingly knowledgeable in our chosen fields, yet unintentionally, this focus often leaves other skills undeveloped and leads to neglecting other areas of potential growth.(提高我们的专业知识,在我们选择的领域变得越来越有知识,这是一种自豪感,但无意中,这种关注往往使其他技能得不到发展,导致忽视其他潜在的增长领域。)” 故选A。 根据文章第七段“Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air.(在我们出色的教练的带领下,我们一起面对海浪。有时,下着大雨,海浪在我们周围拍打,但我们仍然在那里。每一次滑倒,空气中都充满了鼓励的话语。)”和文章第八段“Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked.(说实话,我可能大部分时间都冻得骨头都僵了,但这并不重要,因为真正的快乐和个人成就的新水平已经被解锁了。)” 根据文章倒数第二段“Learning a new skill taught me the humbleness that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on..(学习一项新技能教会了我在新事物上做得不好时的谦卑,以及当你最终掌握了你一直在做的事情时产生的自豪感。)”和文章最后一段“You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try.(如果你不去尝试,你永远不知道你能做什么。)” D。 C Are you an open book, your face broadcasting every passing emotion, or more of a poker face, not showing what you are feeling? B 9. D 10. D 11. 根据第二段“The study, led by Eithne Kavanagh, a research fellow at NTU’s School of Social Sciences, involving over 1,300 participants, noticed striking variations in how much people moved their faces during conversations. Importantly, this expressiveness emerged as a stable individual quality. People displayed similar levels of facial expressiveness across different contexts, with different social partners, and even over time periods up to four months. 根据第三段中“In a negotiation task, more expressive individuals are more likely to secure a larger slice of a reward. The researchers suggest that for agreeable folks, dynamic facial expressions may serve as a tool for building good relationship and smoothing over conflicts.(在谈判任务中,更有表现力的人更有可能获得更大的奖励。研究人员建议,对于和蔼可亲的人来说,动态面部表情可能是建立良好关系和缓和矛盾的工具)”可知,在谈判中,面部表情可能是建立良好关系和缓和矛盾的工具,帮助有表现力的人获得更大利益。因此,面部表情在谈判环境中可能作为一种解决分歧的策略。故选D项。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more ‘readable,’ suggesting that a lively face makes one’s intentions and mental states easier for others to decipher. (表情丰富也与被认为更“可读”有关,这表明一张生动的脸让人的意图和精神状态更容易被decipher)”中“Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more ‘readable,’”可知,丰富的表情更“可读”,即更容易被理解和解读,所以“一张生动的脸更容易被人解读意图和精神状态”。划线词decipher与interpret同义,意为“解读”。故选D项。 11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The findings challenge the ‘poker face’ common belief that a still and unemotional appearance is always most advantageous. Instead, they suggest that for most people, allowing one’s face to mirror inner states and intentions can invite warmer reactions. D 13. B 14. A 15. How can someone loudly insist they’re a good person while behaving in ways that totally contradict this, without mentally short-circuiting in some way?(这难道不是自相矛盾吗?一个人如何能大声宣称自己是好人,同时又做出完全违背这一点的行为,而不会在心理上出现某种短路呢?)”以及第三段“The answer is that there are many psychological and neurological (神经的) processes that allow people to engage in this behaviour that, for want of a better label, we’ll call ‘virtue bullying’.(答案是,有许多心理和神经过程允许人们参与这种行为,由于缺乏更好的标签,我们称之为“美德欺凌”。)” 根据文章第一段“Here’s something that’s surprisingly common: people who strongly advocate moral or noble ideals, but regularly use them to justify attacking and mistreating others — something which is surely neither moral nor noble.(这里有件令人惊讶的常事:一些人强烈倡导道德或崇高的理想,却经常用这些理想来为自己的攻击和虐待行为辩护——这显然既不道德也不崇高。)”以及第四段“We’ve all seen Facebook posts that make some simple, morally solid claim, such as “I support victims of [the latest disaster]”, which are then followed by something like “Share if you agree. 根据文章第六段“A 2011 study found that an effective way to strengthen our self-esteem is to attack others, so our status (地位) becomes relatively higher. So, thinking you’re good while attacking others can be a very instinctive (本能的) process, sadly.(2011年的一项研究发现,攻击他人是加强自尊的有效方式,因此我们的地位就会相对提高。因此,可悲的是,认为自己是好人的同时攻击他人可能是一种非常本能的过程。)”可知,2011年的研究结果表明,攻击他人可以作为一种提升自尊的手段,同时指出这种行为背后的本能性。故选A。 根据文章第七段“For humans, our morals are a key aspect of our identity and an important factor in our decision-making. We’re naturally protective of our identities and decision-making.(对于人类来说,道德是我们身份的一个重要方面,也是我们决策的一个重要因素。)” When we are faced with a crisis, or if we have an important decision to make, many of us fall into the trap of over-thinking. We may keep thinking about something constantly and too long. ____16____ How can we stop ourselves from over-thinking? Doing something to distract yourself is a good idea. You can find working with your hands is especially good. ____17____ Your brain simply doesn’t have the resources to split itself into a third activity, for example over-thinking. ____18____ Studies have shown that when someone views something in excitement and anxiety, the brain is forced to become stuck in the present because all of your senses are completely engaged. You do not have time to focus on something different, which can cause over-thinking. Constant wishing, hoping and praying do not give you any relief. They just keep you stuck in one place. But taking the smallest step off the crisis really matters. It will set things in motion, making you like a snowball. ____19____ The traps are things that cause your natural ability to react without you realizing that there is a connection between the two. Thus, avoiding relevant traps is also a good idea. ____20____ For example, if one of your colleagues is so negative that she always drags you down, stop hanging out with her by having lunch alone at a nearby restaurant. A. This mindset tends to ruin our day. B. Put simply, out of sight, out of mind. C. Just as a saying goes once bitten, twice shy. D. You are really getting your brain working for you. E. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 From that day on, I didn’t talk to Alex. Each day at school, I navigated the hallways with a new route, avoiding the places he frequented. The shared excitement that once connected us was replaced by a painful silence. Alex tried to do something to mend it. One day, he even left me a note, trying to comfort me. But I looked at him coldly, “Leave me alone.” I knew I was hurting him, but the sting of rejection was too fresh, and I couldn’t find the words to bridge the gap. Finally, Mom talked with me, saying Alex wasn’t the one to blame. She reminded me that success and failure were parts of life’s journey. “You should have congratulated your friend on this instead of feeling pitiful for yourself,” she said seriously. It suddenly struck me that how unfairly I treated Alex. Seized by guilt, I followed mom’s advice and left Alex a note, expressing my feelings—not as an apology, but as a step towards healing and rebuilding our bond. It was time to face my fears and embrace the reality that our friendship could weather this storm. 词汇激活 行为类 ①代替:replace/take place of ②度过:weather/get through ③接受:embrace/accept 情绪类 ①拒绝:rejection/denial ②恐惧:fear/horror 【点睛】[高分句型1] One day, he even left me a note, trying to comfort me.
