The attack on Amiens prison was one of the most
spectacular raids of World War Two. It was a very
specialized form of assault that was only made
possible because of the Mosquito. Three Mosquito
squadrons were tasked with the mission. Two to carry
out the attack and the other to act as a reserve. Four
points of attack were selected. The first two would
breach the perimeter wall in two places, since the
Germans would be able to seal one breach quickly.
The second wave was to attack the main prison
building, hitting it with sufficient force to blow
open cell doors in the jail and let the prisoners out.

This is a place where fire and air, animals and
trees, mountains and rivers are revered as gods. One
of the most powerful of these natural deities is the
River Ganges. She is a water-goddess, who blesses the
many faces of northern India in a thousand different
ways. For millennia, she has bought shape and life
to a parched land, and provided sustenance for both
body and soul to the countless millions who have lived
and worshipped along her banks. All around her the
great cycles of birth, death and rebirth are endlessly
played out. And flowing through these natural and
spiritual worlds is the Ganges, India’s river of life.

Not until the sea is frozen can the bears get onto
the ice and begin to hunt their principal prey, the ringed
seal. The best hunting falls in the late spring from
April onward when the ringed seal pups are born. The
pups are naive and vulnerable and catching them is
cost-effective in energy terms. In the weeks before the
ice breaks up, the bears must consume as many of
these young seals as they can. Every failure is a
set-back, depleting the energy reserves necessary for
survival, particularly for pregnant females and those
nursing cubs. Once the ice melts, hunting becomes
fruitless. There are so many avenues of escape for the
seals and so much tiring frustration for the bears.

Hattusha was fifty miles from a major river.
Locked in behind towering mountain ranges, it was
hundreds of miles from the sea and perched high up
on the barren hills, where the climate was harsh. The
whole region is landlocked. It’s cut off from the Black
Sea. It’s some two-hundred and fifty miles from the
eastern Mediterranean. There’s the other factor too.
Because of its height, the region’s snowed in for a
number of months of the year. So it’s totally cut off.
It seemed impossible to imagine how or why the
Hittites built their capital city here. But archaeologist
were to discover it was precisely these difficulties
that made it the perfect site for Hittite ambitions.

At the time, few wanted to take on the challenge of searching
the vast and remote far eastern Delta, in search of
Ramessess’ lost city. But if anyone wanted to find Piramesse,
this was where they had to go. And one man was prepared
to take on that challenge. Pierre Montet was one of
France’s leading Egyptologists. He assembled a team
to embark on an expedition that he hoped would secure
his name in the history books. He’d heard of a strange
ancient site deep in the Nile Delta that had gone largely unexplored and he thought it might be significant. It was
just possible that this site could be a lost treasure.
