Take a view, the Landscape (风景) Photographer of the Year
Award, was the idea of Charlie Waite, one of today’s most respected
landscape photographers. Each year, the high standard of entries has
shown that the Awards are the perfect platform to showcase the very
best photography of the British landscape. Take a view is a desirable
annual competition for photographers from all corners of the UK and
beyond.
Mike
Shepherd
(2011)
Skiddaw in
Winter
Cumbria,
England It was an extremely cold winter’s evening and freezing
fog hung in the air. I climbed to the top of a small rise and
realised that the mist was little more than a few feet
deep, and though it was only a short climb, I found
myself completely above it and looking at a wonderfully
clear view of Skiddaw with the sun setting in the west. I
used classical techniques, translated from my college
days spent in the darkroom into Photoshop, to achieve
the black-and-white image (图像).
Timothy
Smith
(2014)
Macclesfield
Forest
Cheshire,
England I was back in my home town of Macclesfield to take
some winter images. Walking up a path through the
forest towards Shutlingsloe, a local high point, I
came across a small clearing and immediately noticed
the dead yellow grasses set against the fresh snow. The
small pine added to the interest and I placed it centrally
to take the view from the foreground right through into
the forest.

mid-1963,the Beatles had been extremely popular in England. 32 3

Before the 1830s,most newspapers were sold through annual
subscriptions in America,usually $8 to $10 a year.Today $8 or $10
seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were
forbidding to most citizens.Accordingly, newspapers were read almost
only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that.
The trend, then, was toward the “penny paper”—a term
referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any
inexpensive newspaper;perhaps more importantly it meant
newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street.
This development did not take place overnight. It had been
possible(but not easy)to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830,
but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer’s office
to purchase a copy.Street sales were almost unknown. However, within
a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in
eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny—
usually two or three cents was charged—and some of the older well-
known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase “penny
paper”caught the public’s fancy, and soon there would be papers that
did indeed sell for only a penny.
This new trend of newspapers for “the man on the street” did not
begin well. Some of the early ventures (企业) were immediate
failures.Publishers already in business, people who were owners of
successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few
youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling.

Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid is used to grilling guests on
the sofa every morning, but she is cooking up a storm in her latest
role—showing families how to prepare delicious and nutritious meals
on a tight budget.
In Save Money:Good Food, she visits a different home each
week and with the help of chef Matt Tebbutt offers top tips on how to
reduce food waste, while preparing recipes for under £5 per family a
day. And the Good Morning Britain presenter says she’s been able to
put a lot of what she’s learnt into practice in her own home, preparing
meals for sons, Sam, 14, Finn, 13, and Jack, 11.
“We love Mexican churros, so I buy them on my phone from
my local Mexican takeaway restaurant,” she explains.“I pay £5 for
a portion (一份), but Matt makes them for 26p a portion, because
they are flour, water, sugar and oil. Everybody can buy takeaway
food, but sometimes we’re not aware how cheaply we can make this
food ourselves.”
The eight-part series (系列节目), Save Money:Good Food,
follows in the footsteps of ITV’s Save Money:Good Health, which
gave viewers advice on how to get value from the vast range of health
products on the market.
With food our biggest weekly household expense, Susanna and
Matt spend time with a different family each week. In tonight’s Easter
special they come to the aid of a family in need of some delicious
inspiration on a budget. The team transforms the family’s long weekend
of celebration with less expensive but still tasty recipes.
Save Money:Good Food,
24. What do we know about Susanna Reid?
A. She enjoys embarrassing her guests.
B. She has started a new programme.
C. She dislikes working early in the morning.
D. She has had a tight budget for her family.
根据第一段中的“...she is cooking up a storm in her
latest role—showing families how to prepare delicious and nutritious
meals on a tight budget.”
C项颠倒是非,根据is used to grilling guests on the sofa every
25. How does Matt Tebbutt help Susanna?
A. He buys cooking materials for her.
B. He prepares food for her kids.
C. He assists her in cooking matters.
D. He invites guest families for her.
根据第二段中的“...with the help of chef Matt Tebbutt
offers top tips on how to reduce food waste...”
26. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 4?
A. Summarize the previous paragraphs.
B. Provide some advice for the readers.
C. Add some background information.
D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Keeping Fit by Eating Smart
B. Balancing Our Daily Diet
C. Making Yourself a Perfect Chef
D. Cooking Well for Less

The whole class burst out laughing as Bruce rushed into the
classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt
revealed a red pajama top (睡衣上衣) underneath and instead of white
school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green shoes that were two
sizes too big.
Bruce said quietly, “Sorry teacher”and walked to his seat.
Mr.Tan looked at the rest of the students. The laughter quickly turned to
silence. Bruce’s classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine
times out often, they would be entertained by Bruce’s late arrival and
his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing.
Bruce lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school
daily. Students passing by in buses would shout his name together just to
see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in
the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Bruce was likable,
he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates
found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Tom,
who sat next to Bruce, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Bruce did not turn up at school. His
classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After
school, Tom decided to walk over to Bruce’s house to check on him.
As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Bruce must be
listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Tom let
himself in. He called Bruce’s name a few times but there was no
response. The music played on. Tom looked in through a window. His
eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Bruce was
playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow (琴弓) over the strings expertly. He played beautifully, so much so that it sounded like a recording. Tom left quietly.
When Teachers’ Day came around, Tom had a plan. It was the
tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had
to contribute an item. Tom convinced the class to let Bruce perform.
Short of ideas, the class agreed. On the day of the concert, all the
teachers and students were surprised to see the school’s most awkward
student walking on stage with a violin. Some of the students started to
talk about all the funny things Bruce did.

When Bruce started to play, the audience fell silent.
When Bruce started to play, the audience fell silent. Their
jaws dropped open. As the last note ended, there was a moment of
silence. Then the audience responded with thunderous applause. Bruce
became a popular icon and had many fans in his final year of school.
Today, Bruce and Tom are still best friends. Bruce is on a scholarship
pursuing music in Austria. Some days he still comes to class wearing an
inside-out shirt or a pair of mismatched shoes.

Laurie Horam never thought of himself as musical. At home, his
dad never listened to music, while one of his boarding school teachers
labelled him tone deaf. But last month he started to busk. And while he
accompanies his guitar-playing friend Alan Eaton on a harmonica (口
琴), people clap, dance and throw coins into Alan’s guitar case for
the local food bank.Horam caught himself thinking:“How, at the
age of 80, do I come to be playing music to people on the streets of
Bradford?”
The question preoccupied him, because, some years ago at a
family gathering, Gavin, one of his children, said, “You know
what, Dad? It can’t be coincidental. We must have got our natural
abilities and interest from you.” He has three sons, two daughters and
a stepson from two marriages; between them, they cover a range of
instruments and genres from techno to rock.Horam was floored.“There
can’t be music in me, because I can’t play!” he said.
Eight years ago, Horam, a retired civil servant, was driving
back from a trip to the Yorkshire coast with his eldest son, Gavin,
who was visiting from Canada.Gavin stopped at a music shop.He
walked out and said, “Here you are.I bought this for you, Dad.It’s a
harmonica.I’ll try to show you how to play a bit.”
They went to a local pub.Gavin played guitar and Laurie sat in the
corner with his harmonica, trying to make a sound that no one would
hear. After six months, he was invited into the group.Unable to read
music, he discovered a talent for improvisation
responding to a note within a millisecond without batting an eyelid.“I
don’t play by ear.I play by heart.” Actually, Horam says, “My
harmonica plays me—how I feel, what I am, what I’ve been.”
Music has enriched life with friendship and made Horam feel
“part of something much bigger” than himself.“At a time when the
scope of life might be shrinking, mine is expanding,” he
says.“Maybe we never know completely who we are or what we can
do.”

Imagine a plate holding two strawberries,
identical in appearance. One came out of a supermarket box, meaning
it was probably harvested when it was still unripe. By the time it
reached the plate it may have been off the vine (藤) for two weeks. The
other strawberry was picked from a garden minutes before being eaten.
Supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages:
They are convenient and still available even in winter months. But the
two berries differ from each other in the same way that hearing music in
a concert hall differs from listening to it on an old CD player. The home-
grown fruit is an eatable case for making a home garden.
Your columnist, who long considered gardening a complete waste
of time, advances this argument with great enthusiasm. Planting cool-
weather greens, as gardeners across the northeast of America are now
doing, can seem nonsense, since convenient, continuously well-
stocked supermarket shelves are available all week. But the same could
be said of cooking: There are many cheap and decent restaurants
around, so why bother to make your own meals?
That attitude misconstrues the ultimate appeal of gardening: It
mistakes the product for the purpose. It is true that a garden can produce
tomatoes and carrots of incomparable sweetness, and lettuces (莴苣)
and herbs that taste like themselves rather than the plastic they are
usually packaged in. While finding, let’s say, lettuces in the shops
can take some time, effort, and expense, growing your own
vegetables insures a reliable supply.
On the other hand, a garden, especially in the early years, can
produce little but frustration. Green hands may plant the wrong crops for
their soil. And even expert gardeners can lose a season’s harvest to
uncooperative weather.
No matter. The real joy of gardening is the time spent doing it. The
deepest pleasure—as with cooking, writing or almost anything
worthwhile—is in the work itself. To garden is to patiently, lovingly
and diligently help life become strong and healthy, in the ground and
above it.
