“They tell me that you’d like to make a statue (塑像) of me—is
that correct, Miss Vinnie Ream?”
The deep, gentle voice helped calm the nervous girl.Asking a
favor of the President of the United States was no casual matter,
especially for a seventeen-year-old girl.
“Yes, sir,” she replied, her dark eyes meeting his.“I
wouldn’t have dared to ask you, but my teacher, Mr.Mills, says I
am ready.I plan to make it in an admirable manner.”
President Lincoln smiled.“Painters, sculptors—they’ve all tried
to make the best of this ordinary face, but I’m afraid there’s not much
hope. What did you have in mind, Miss Ream? A bust (半身像)?”
Before Vinnie could say yes, the President hurried on, a shade
of apology in his voice.“Of course—I shouldn’t have asked.A full-
length pose would be much too big a project for a young woman your
size.”
Vinnie’s face turned red.She realized she looked like a child, with
her tiny figure.“Small does not mean weak, sir,” she defended
herself.“I was born in the country of Wisconsin.I’ve driven teams of
horses and carried water.Making a full-length clay (黏土) figure would
not exhaust my strength—and that is what I intend to do!”
The President’s eyes brightened at her show of spirit.“Sorry,
madam, I have underestimated you as I didn’t know your
background.”
But his smile faded as he rubbed his beard with bony fingers, in
thought. “Miss Ream,” he sighed, “I’d like to let you do it, but
as you know, we are in the middle of a war.How could I possibly take
the time to pose for a sculpture now? I hardly have a minute to
myself.”
Vinnie glanced around and noted the size of his office.“I work
quickly, ” she said. Her voice was soft but confident as she pointed to
the corner near the windows.“If I were to bring my clay here and work
for three hours every afternoon, I could complete most of the project
while you are at your desk.”
The President seemed to consider her idea seriously. He got up and
shook Vinnie’s hand warmly, “I’ve heard that you are a talented
young woman, and I have found you charming and intelligent as well.I
cannot make my decision immediately, but you will hear from me
soon.”
The very next day, Vinnie received an invitation from the
President.
41. What gave Vinnie confidence to make her request of President
Lincoln?
A. Her aggressive personality.
B. Mr.Mills’s encouraging remark.
C. President Lincoln’s gentle voice.
D. Her interest in a challenging job.
I wouldn’t have dared to ask
you,but my teacher,Mr.Mills,says I am ready.”
42. How did President Lincoln first respond to Vinnie’s request?
A. Pleased. B. Thrilled.
C. Regretful. D. Doubtful.
A full-length pose would
be much too big a project for a young woman your size.”
怀疑态度的,故选D项doubtful“感到怀疑的”。pleased满意的;
43. Vinnie confirmed her ability to make a full-length statue by
highlighting .
A. her experience from other projects
B. her innocent childhood in the country
C. the heavy labor she had done before
D. the skill she picked up in Wisconsin
I’ve driven teams of
horses and carried water.”
(the heavy labor she had done before)来证实自己有能力制作一尊全身
44. Vinnie wanted to choose the corner near the windows to .
A. achieve effects of natural lighting
B. keep all her tools within easy reach
C. observe the President at a right angle
D. avoid disturbing the President’s work

I could complete most of the project while you are at
your desk.”
45. What message does the story convey?
A. A strong-willed soul can reach his goal.
B. Experience helps to promote excellence.
C. Ups and downs make one strong.
D. Devotion requires enthusiasm.
答案:A

由此判断,A项“A strong-willed
soul can reach his goal.(意志坚强的人能达到目标)”是故事要传达的
“Experience helps to promote excellence.”

My mother also encouraged me to make what I wanted.I tried making toy cars with cardboard boxes and constructing buildings from leftover cardboard and bits of wood my father gave me.When my mother saw my creations, she told me how creative my designs were. 34 I learned a lot about how to extend the life of objects and transform them into something new and useful. It was a trait (特点) others found helpful, and I soon had friends who wanted to make things with me.
A. I wasn’t alone any longer.
B. I enjoyed reading stories aloud.
C. I was invited to play with another kid.
D. I loved the colorful photographs in the books.
E. Another habit I formed early was being outdoors.
F. Thus, I began my lifelong interest in making things.
G. My older brother couldn’t be bothered to play with me.
35 My parents made it a point for their two kids to spend
time outside, no matter the weather or season. My brother, of
course, raced off to be with his friends, while I had plenty to do
myself. There was making leaf houses in autumn, ice skating in
winter, and so much more. They’re all memories I treasure today.

When we first met Lucky, we were surprised at his mini figure.
The Labrador (拉布拉多) dog was born last Friday and was one of the
four babies. He was the tiniest one we had ever seen, weighing less
than 150 grams at birth.
The newborn puppy had a low body temperature and kept trembling all the time. The dog mother seemed too tired to nurse the
weakest one while feeding other kids. He was so weak that we didn’t
think he could make it to the morning.
I, along with my eight-year-old daughter, Alice, the smallest
one in our family, stayed up with him all night. We milked his mother
and used an small-sized bottle to hand-feed him. When Lucky got too
sleepy to eat, we put honey on his gums (牙龈) to give his low blood
sugar a quick boost, an old trick we’d learned from other dog keepers.
I slept on the couch with him on top of me. Alice held the little dog
to raise his body temperature, but it failed. He still trembled with cold.
Then we used a thermos (热水瓶) and changed the hot water every two
hours. Meanwhile, we constantly checked the thermos temperature to
avoid burning his delicate skin.
The next day, to our relief, Lucky took a turn for the better. His
body temperature recovered to normal, but he appeared hungry. We
started to nurse him with a regular baby bottle.
On our farm we have 15 goats plus chickens and dogs. But Lucky
was too little to keep outside. Worrying that other animals could have
pushed him around or harmed him, we decided to keep him indoors.
We were fortunate to meet the neatest one—because he rarely made
messes.
He stayed in the house with us for about a month. ①
Isolated from other dogs, he became Alice’s pet. Lucky’s little tail
swung at the sound of her voice. He liked to play with Alice, follow
her steps to every room and sit beside her while she was reading or
studying. Whatever we did, he did: watching TV, eating, or
sleeping. With time going by, he turned healthier and stronger.
②
Each day,
Alice and Lucky, the two smallest, became closer and closer.
We finally trusted him to go out.
Lucky had his own area outside and even had new companions.
③ Whenever Alice
stepped outside the door, Lucky barked and followed until she came
over to get him. The little creature made friends with other goats and
dogs. They chased and played in the tall grass and slept together to rid
of coldness. It seemed that he had completely adapted to the new
surroundings.④
He loved running on the lawn like a big rabbit.
This little kid has already brought so much joy into
our lives and become a special part of our family.

It takes a lot of hard work and determination
to achieve big goals. Many times, people must persevere in spite of
obstacles to realize their dreams. Collette Divitto is a talented baker who
managed to do just that. She used her bright personality, determination, and talent to become an entrepreneur.
Collette Divitto was born in Boston. Like many others, after graduating from college, she wanted to get a job. She went to many job interviews, but she kept getting rejected. Many employers said she was “not the right fit”. Divitto believed she was being rejected so often in that she was born with Down syndrome, which is a genetic disorder related to a person’s chromosomes.People with Down syndrome often have intellectual or physical disabilities.
Facing many job rejections,Divitto felt discouraged and hurt. She
felt she wanted to open her own business and be her own boss. She
thought about her hobbies and passions. Divitto knew she loved baking.
She would always create delicious recipes to share with her family and
friends. One of these recipes was for a chocolate chip cookie rolled in
cinnamon sugar. Her mom tasted the cookies and urged her to write
down the recipe to make them again. Divitto began baking and selling
her chocolate cookies locally, calling her business “Collettey’s
Cookies”. She took her cookies to a local grocery store named Golden Goose Market. Immediately after tasting the cookies, the market decided to sell Devitto’s cookies. Golden Goose Market became Divitto’s first client. Eventually, a television station shared the story of Divitto’s cookie business. Her story went viral!
Divitto didn’t just create Collettey’s Cookies to sell delicious baked
goods. She has a great ambition to expand her business so that she can
hire as many people as possible. Currently, many of her employees
have disabilities.Divitto also wants non-disabled business owners to see
the strengths and talents of people with disabilities. The majority of
disabled people who can work cannot find paying jobs. Even when they
do get jobs, they are often paid less than the minimum wage. Divitto
wants to change these statistics. She wants to make sure people with
disabilities get jobs that pay fairly.

According to a study done by University of
Michigan, shopping to reduce stress was 40 times more effective at
giving people a sense of control and shoppers were three times less sad
than those only looking at items.
More than half of the 1,000 consumers surveyed by Credit
Karma, head researcher of the study, said they have shopped to deal
with feelings of stress or depression. About 48 percent of men and 31
percent of women who have stress shopping said they had purchased
alcohol when stressed. About 82 percent of women spend on clothing
compared to 52 percent of men. Women also lead shopping for
jewellery,42 percent, compared to 22 percent for men.
In some sense, stress shopping can actually help you live a healthier life by making sure that your blood pressure is lowered. The survey found 82 percent had only positive feelings about their purchases and that the positive mood was long-lasting. However, stress shopping, for many, could grow into a drive that uses up money, causes conflict, and therefore adds great stress to life.
Despite the in-time joy from purchases, stress shopping never
proves a long-lasting cure to stress or depression. Actually it needs to be
avoided anyhow. Whether you’re purchasing presents or buying groceries, having the items you need written down will provide you
with brightness while shopping. Reward yourself for sticking to your list
and you’ll be more likely to commit to it.
In addition, always think about what you struggle with most financially. Do you spend too much money at the mall? Eating out?
Vacations? Make a list of where your money is going and take necessary steps to resist your desire. For example, if you spend too much money on dining out on weekends, stuff your cupboard with food on Friday. So you’ll be more likely to stay in and cook. And you need to give up the need to keep up with others. Everyone’s financial situation is different and comparison may lead to debt and dissatisfaction with what you already have.
