I have a special place in my heart for libraries.I have for as long as
I can remember.I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes
reading up to three books a day as a child.Stories were like air to me and
while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures
through the books I checked out from the library.
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years
old.It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to
reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new
place and an added meaning in my life.I had several children and books
were our main source (来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us
to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out
books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.
I always read, using different voices,as though I were acting out
the stories with my voice and they loved it!It was a special time to
bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books.
Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I
love it that the excitement of going to the library lives on from
generation to generation.
As a novelist, I’ve found a new relationship with libraries.I
encourage readers to go to their local library when they can’t afford to
purchase a book.I see libraries as a safe haven (避风港) for readers and
writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book.Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy (盗版行为) and I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can.Encourage readers to use the library.Share library announcements on your social media.Frequent them and talk about them when you can.

35

libraries in a significant way when they can.”
sponsor book fairs赞助书展,write for social media给
32
33
34
35
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Reading: A Source of Knowledge
B. My Idea about Writing
C. Library: A Haven for the Young
D. My Love of the Library
答案:D
32
33
34
35

put your pen to your paper and write nonstop for ten or fifteen minutes
without letting your pen leave the paper.Stay loose and free. 37

nonstop for ten or fifteen minutes without letting your pen leave the
D选项“First of all, learn the technique of nonstop

worry about grammar or spelling.(不要担心语法和拼写)”,因此空格
B选项“Let your pen follow the

The next technique is to write your draft rapidly without worrying
about being perfect. 38 Yet,by learning to live with imperfection, you will save yourself headaches and a wastepaper basket full of crumpled (弄皱) paper.Think of your first draft as a path cut out of the jungle—as part of an exploration, not as a complete highway.

imperfection, you will save yourself headaches and a wastepaper
可知,E选项“Too many writers try to get their drafts right the first

The third technique is to try printing out a triple-spaced
copy to allow space for revision. 39 As a result, these writers never
get in the habit of crossing out chunks (大块) of their draft and writing
revisions in the blank space. After you have revised your draft until it is

以便有修改的空间)”和F选项“Many beginning writers don’t leave
法,且其中的“Many beginning writers”和下文的“these writers”

“The resulting blank space invites you to revise.(由此产生的空白允
Then you can print out a fresh draft, again setting your text on

Jennifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college
student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower
bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau
Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor’s
degree.
Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of
10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her
mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended
a local technical college, working to pay her tuition (学费), because
there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After
graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their
schooling.
Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own.She
decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to
better support her family while doing something she loves:nursing. She
chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital in
Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to
home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with
her kids.Jennifer received great support from her family as she worked
to earn her degree:Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills,
and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times.
Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and
graduated with honors.Jennifer sacrificed (牺牲) to achieve her goal,
giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to
study.“Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my
kids and studying for exams or papers,” she says. However, her
children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn
her degree.Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to
her family—and that’s pretty powerful.

I must have always known reading was very important because the
first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night
that I don’t remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside.I
was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading.Hearing mom
say,“I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper thismorning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself.I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew.So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her,I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read.We would start off with
sentences,then paragraphs,and then stories.It seemed an unending
journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to
read could open many doors. When mom said, “The C-A-N-D-Y is
hidden on the top shelf,” I knew where the candy was.My progress
in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything.I
often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly,so that I
could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was
factual reading.I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests.Occasionally,I would read a novel that was assigned, but I
didn’t enjoy this type of reading.I liked facts, things that are concrete.I
thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet,now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so
simple is becoming more complex,I find myself needing a way to
escape.By opening a novel,I can leave behind my burdens and enter
into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new
character. In these worlds I can become anyone.I don’t have to write
down what happened or what technique the author was using when he
or she wrote this.I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human
understanding.Reading is a vital part of my life.Reading satisfies my
desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie
within books are limitless.

I came outside after basketball practice with some fellows. The sun
was setting, and the cool autumn evening felt good compared to the
hot gym. I walked to where my mom’s car always parked, but it
wasn’t there. That was a little strange. She never parked anywhere
else, and she was never late. I went back and sat down on the roadside.
One by one, the fellows who had come outside with me picked
up their gym bags and backpacks, greeted their parents, got into
different cars and waved goodbye to me.
I watched them drive off. Where was my mom? And why didn’t
she call? I’d give her five more minutes, and then I was going to call
her.
Five minutes went by and another six vehicles left. But there was
still no Mom’s car.
I got up and paced up and down at the parking lot as I finished
punching in Mom’s number and waited. It went straight to voicemail.
A set of headlights pulled into the parking lot. A girl walked toward
the car. It was Rachel who just finished her volleyball training.
Suddenly she stopped and was looking at me. “Dad, Lester is
still here.”
Mr. McPhearson paused with his hand on the car door. “Rachel,
we’re already late.”
“I don’t care. We can’t leave him here alone, Dad.”
Then I saw their feet stop in front of me. “Will you have a ride
home?” Mr. McPhearson asked.
I nodded. “My mom’s supposed to be here.”
“Do you mind if we sit down and wait with you?” Then he sat
down next to me, and Rachel sat down next to him.
“Rachel, will you introduce me to your classmate?”
“Dad, this is Lester Monroe. He’s in my language arts class.
And he’s a great basketball player!”
“Yes, sir,” I said. “That’s why I’m here. We just had
practice.”
“I see,” her dad nodded. “I haven’t seen any basketball
games. Maybe I’ll come and watch you play.”
Suddenly my phone rang in my hand. ①
“Lester, I’m sorry. My meeting went over and I couldn’t get
away. I’m on my way now. Just give me a few more minutes.” She
sounded apologetic but also a little frantic. “Okay, Mom,” I said.
“Rachel and his father are with me. I’ll wait for you here.” I ended
the call and looked at Mr. McPhearson and Rachel. “My mom is on her
way now. She’ll be here soon.”②
It was my mom.
“That’s good to hear. We are
going to wait with you.” Rachel insisted.
Around twenty minutes later, my mom’s car came into our sight.
③ “I’m so
sorry I was late, Lester,” she said. She hugged me and then
introduced herself to Mr. McPhearson and Rachel. “Thank you for
keeping him company,” she said. Mr. McPhearson smiled and said,
“If Rachel were in the same situation, I think you would do exactly
the same thing as I do.” ④
She parked next to Mr. McPhearson’s car and got out.
Then we all smiled.

A
There was a boy named Drake. He was just
12 years old. His parents had no money to educate him. They had no
choice other than to tell their children to leave school and start helping
them with their shop’s work.
Drake assimilated this and started waking up before sunrise and
going to their shop and cleaning it. He was really a hardworking guy. He
always wanted something big to happen in his life, but he knew that a
change does not happen in a day. So he started teaching himself and
completed all senior high school courses at the age of 18. When he
turned 20, he got a job offer from an electrical company.
He started working in that company, and every day after coming
from his job, he would learn more and more about bulbs (灯泡)
because he saw a lot of bulb production there. After some years he made
a new improved bulb of his own. He was really excited to show it to his
boss, but when the boss saw it, he wasn’t interested in it and said it
was of little use. But still, he believed in himself and didn’t give up.
After a few months, he thought of setting up his own factory
where he and his wife would put the improved bulb into production.
When they made the bulbs, they started selling them. No one was
interested in those bulbs, but still, he kept believing in himself.
One day when the sun was rising, he got an order of 1,000
pieces of the bulbs. This totally changed his life. After that, he started
getting more and more orders.

(2024·1月九省联考)For lots of kids, toddlerhood (幼儿期) is an
important time for friendship.Studies show that the earlier kids learn to
form positive relationships, the better they are at relating to others as
teenagers and adults.Playing together also helps these kids practice
social behaviors,such as kindness,sharing,and cooperation.
Even so,how quickly your child develops into a social creature
may also depend on his temperament (性格).Some toddlers are very
social, but others are shy.In addition, the way that toddlers
demonstrate that they like other children is markedly different from
what adults think of as expressions of friendship.Research at Ohio State
University in Columbus found that a toddler’s way of saying “I like
you” during play is likely to come in the form of copying a friend’s
behavior.
This seemingly unusual way of demonstrating fondness can result
in unpleasant behavior.Regardless of how much they like a playmate,
they may still grab his toys, refuse to share, and get bossy. But experts
say that this is a normal and necessary part of friendship for kids this
age.Through play experiences,toddlers learn social rules.That’s why
it’s so important to take an active role in your toddler’s social
encounters by setting limits and offering frequent reminders of what
they are. When you establish these guidelines, explain the reasons
behind them.
Begin by helping your child learn sympathy (“Ben is crying. What’s making him so sad?”),then suggest how he could resolve the problem (“Maybe he would feel better if you let him play the ball.”).When your child shares or shows empathy (同理心) toward a friend, praise him (“Ben stopped crying! You made him feel better.”).
Another way to encourage healthy social interaction is by
encouraging kids to use words—not fists—to express how they feel. It’s
also important to be mindful of how your child’s personality affects
playtime.Kids are easy to get angry when they’re sleepy or hungry,so
schedule playtime when they’re refreshed.

(2023·河北石家庄质检) I yawned (打哈欠) as I got off the last
step of the bus.I had woken early that morning, and had not been able
to sleep on the long ride, thinking about that day’s race.I had never
raced in a statewide race before.Over thirty high school teams ran,
along with quite a few colleges. The rest of my team and I unloaded the
bus,and we relaxed and waited for our race patiently.
“Start warming up,” our coach told us,roughly forty-five
minutes after we arrived. After finishing our stretches,we headed over
to the starting line, eager for the race to begin.
The starter walked to the middle of the field. “There will be two
commands,” he boomed. “Runners set, then the gun.If you hear
another shot, return to the starting line to start again.” My heart raced
as I got my legs ready to race.
“Runners set!”the starter shouted.Bam! The gun fired,and
he rushed out of our way.Adrenaline (肾上腺素)rushed through my
body as I raced through the mass of runners. As I rounded the first
turn,my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts. Then,in
what felt like only one minute,I arrived at the one-mile mark.
“6'10″,” a man declared as I ran by.I tried to ignore him,but
my legs began to burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to
go.I slowed down my pace, for I knew the second mile was the worst
of all three.Minutes later,I felt horrible.My legs ached,feeling like
lead blocks. My vision was clouded as sweat dropped down into my
eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall off if I swung them one
more time.Just as I almost reached my limit,a boy passed me.He also
seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.
I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the
ground.
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one,I
asked the boy to run without me.
suddenly fell to the ground可知,作者摔倒了。
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one,I
asked the boy to run without me.”
In the last
mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one,I asked the boy to run
without me.”
I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the
ground. My world was clouded by total darkness. How I wish the
ground to crack and swallow me !I could feel everybody was staring
at me, widening their mouths and not being able to utter a word .The
sudden silence brought a sharp pain in my knees and “failure” was
the only word flashing in my mind .Then the silence was broken by a
deep voice,“You won’t give up so easily,will you?”The boy
ahead of me turned back and pulled me up. “Let’s run to the finishing line together!”The second mile saw its end while we ran shoulder to shoulder .
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I
asked the boy to run without me.“You could win a place if you went
by yourself.” I looked at him in the eyes with sweat blurring my
sight . The boy breathing heavily ,drops of sweat rolled down his
face. He shook his head saying,“Winning a place is not that important.”Then we smiled at each other as if we had been the only
runners .The last mile seemed shorter and we enjoyed the moment when
we passed the finishing line together with thunderous applause.I know
they cheered for us not for winning a race but for something more
important.
