Pasage 1 阅读理解(2020·天津卷·D)
After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two
qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and
men of average performance: curiosity and discontent.I have never
known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known
an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much
more than ambition.Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped
objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed
their fall to the ground.Like Galileo, all the great names in history
were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We
are born with them and need only recapture them.
“The great man,” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not
lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it.We stop asking
questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And
the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages us to
occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to
be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged.I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it.Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any
special ability? Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You
haven’t any time? That’s good, because it’s always the people with
no time who get things done.Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote
parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old? Remember
that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and
that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than
right now, for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.

Passage 1 阅读理解(2018·北京卷·A)
My First Marathon (马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured
and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks
to train.Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class,
the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn’t do
either well.He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When
I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against
myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was
all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find
the finish line.I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove
something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became
untied.So I stopped to readjust.Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle
hurt badly.Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then
running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She
is my biggest fan.She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m.
or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a
medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came
in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and
worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon
winner”.

Passage 2 阅读理解(2021·新高考Ⅰ卷·D)
Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of
emotional (情感的) intelligence. Many people now misunderstand
emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person’s
makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character,
motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people
skills.” Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to
some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based
emotional intelligence.
We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of
skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to
accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor
to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to
control potential victims.Being emotionally intelligent does not
necessarily make one a moral person.
Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far
ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of
the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive
aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis (重视)
on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being.The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.
Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence
is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest
in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in
coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives (视
角) from which to study how people manage their lives.Emotional
intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to
point us in the right direction.

微型写作——续写提升练
阅读下面材料,根据其内容写出最后两段内所空出的四个句
子,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I admit that there was a time in my life when I hated my brothers.
Especially, my older brother, Zach.He was 13 months older than me.
As an elementary school kid, he loved making fun of his little sister:
me. While Zach and I got along sometimes, we more often fought.
The fighting only stopped after my parents threatened to punish us. But
this never solved anything in the long term, and even though it
stopped the fighting for the moment, my anger just kept growing.
Toward the end of middle school, we both began collecting
Pokemon cards. We saw Pokemon cards as a sort of status (地位)
symbol, and whoever had better cards was the stronger, better,
cooler person. It became a collecting competition, and every weekend
the neighborhood kids and Zach and I would gather to trade or show off
our cards.
As I remember, it was impossible to know what cards you would
get; it was the luck of the draw. So, it was to my great disappointment and envy when Zach got a holographic (全息图的) Charizard one weekend. Charizard was one of the rarest. The way I saw it, if you got a Charizard card you were basically the king of the world, and if you got a holographic Charizard card, you were the king of the universe. Zach had just won the ultimate jackpot (头奖).
One night, Zach wasn’t feeling well. He went to bed with a
stomachache. In the middle of the night, he awoke, crying from
being in so much pain. I went over to see what was happening. My
parents came rushing over and seconds later, Zach vomited (呕吐) all
over his room; on to the carpet, himself, and...the magical
Charizard card! My parents immediately took him into the bathroom
to get him cleaned up and near a toilet in case he had to vomit any more.
I was left in his room, my heart pounding wildly. What about the
messy card? ① I closed my eyes and
picked up the card with my fingertips. I took it into the bathroom and
cleaned the card. I dried the wet card on a towel and laid it out to dry. I
washed my hands and took a deep breath of relief... I had saved the card.
②
I knew what I had to do.
The following night I told Zach what I did, probably hoping for
some kind of royal treatment.
Zach did thank me and I felt our relationship softened a bit
afterwards. ③
Zach and I became closer than ever.
Maybe we were just getting older or had more in common. But I felt
that night was a turning point. I didn’t have to give Zach a kidney or
anything to show him how much I was willing to do for him. I just had
to selflessly clean his Charizard card. ④
As the years passed, the Pokemon cards began
collecting dust in our basement.
I can’t think of a better way
to say, “Hey brother, I got your back.”

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2023·山东日照期末)Kieran Moise started growing out his hair in
the eighth grade, after losing a friend to brain cancer. He had seen
people donate their hair to children who had lost theirs during medical
treatment and wanted to do the same.
“Kieran has always been known for his hair. It was a big part of
his personality and who he was,” said his mother,Kelly. “But he
has always been the most compassionate and caring person. Since he
was 6 years old, he has somehow had the mindset of raising money
and giving it to people who need it, and that has never changed.”
In May, Moise graduated from high school with an impressive
19-inch Afro (非洲式发型). But with him set to enter the United States
Air Force Academy,it was time for a cut.
To maximize his impact, Moise organized a live event at a local
brewery in Huntsville and an online fundraising campaign called
“Kieran’s Curls for Cancer”, where he aimed to raise $1,000 per
inch cut.
On May 29, nearly 100 people attended the event, where they
watched Moise get his hair braided and snipped off. His hair was
donated to Children With Hair Loss, a non-profit organization in
Michigan that makes free wigs for kids and young adults facing
medically related hair loss.
By the end of the day, the event raised $20,000 for St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital and has continued to raise money online.
As of Saturday, it was more than $39,000.
“Charitable giving comes in many forms, from direct acts of
kindness to impactful public statements that motivate others to come
together to support a cause,” Richard C. Shadyac Jr., President and
CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital, told the media.“Kieran’s simple
act of kindness exemplifies (例证) the power of younger generations
and is something to celebrate, a selfless decision that will make a
direct impact on the lives of the kids at St.Jude Children’s Research
Hospital and children everywhere for years to come.”

(2024·浙江嘉兴测试)Whenever my nine-year-old daughter
approached me,eyes wide,with a notebook and a pen,telling me
she wanted to engage in a game of school, something inside me froze. There was a mental block so huge that it felt like I was being
asked by my boss to make a presentation about artificial intelligence. So,nine times out of ten,I made an excuse.
Why is it so hard to play with my child?I realize this is because I
have no idea how to play.I have many happy memories of my youth,
but absolutely none involves playing with dolls or building blocks with
my parents.I don’t blame them because they never played with these
things as children either. When I ask them what their own childhoods
were like,my dad tells me a story about being locked in a cupboard,
while my mum recalls the box of buttons she was told to amuse herself
with.
There are studies showing how important play is for a child’s
growth, and no end of people campaigning for their young to get more
of it at school. The poet Michael Rosen argues play is not an extra and
all of us,whatever age, could do with more silliness in our lives.
As Rosen explains,“The need for adults to be productive
members of society means we end up thinking of things that make us
laugh,or which are fun to do,as not being very significant or having
very little value.”This is exactly why we need to play more.It lightens
the load of life and allows us to get back to a childlike state of wonder.
Play is vital to health. And it is why I’ve started playing school
games with my daughter.I managed an entire hour and a half the other
day—and afterwards,I felt happy and 20 years younger.
