My eye-opening years living among the locals in Nicaragua
Having lived among the locals in Nicaragua (尼加拉瓜) or what is now three years, I’ve experienced cultural differences that are still alien to my British eyes.
While I find it rather disgraceful to try to attract the attention of someone with a sound which a Brit would reserve only for calling animals, for him this is perfectly normal and polite. I also think it is rude to walk into a shop and say give me without a please or a thank you but he doesn’t and neither does the shopkeeper.
I have also had to learn yet another foreign language of hand gestures and body language. “Come here” is always done with the palm down, smacking the elbows implies a person is tight with their money and the strangers one of all for me is — pointing with the lips the first few times this happened it looked like someone was blowing me a kiss — how wrongly I could have translated that one.
Economic status of Nicaragua, one of the poorest Central American nations, influences its culinary practices. I have to confess to becoming thoroughly bored with gallo pinto — the ubiquitous rice and beans dish of Nicaragua—after a few weeks but for many Nicaraguans this is breakfast, lunch and dinner, their whole life. It is the cheapest way to keep the family fed and where food is concerned nothing here is wasted.
Can you imagine piling the entire family onto a scooter (小型摩托车)? It’s perfectly normal for Nicaraguans. Dad drives, the child old enough to stand is perched on the footplate holding onto the handlebars, a toddler clings onto dad’s back while mum with a babe in arms is riding (sometimes side-saddle) at the back.
Even after three years, it still fascinates me that the locals can sit in a rocking chair outside their houses, doing nothing for hours, without getting bored. There have been times when i have been led to question my own attitudes and been shown levels of patience, bravery and positivity in the face of hardship which my own culture could learn a great deal from.
4. Which of the following actions is unusual for Nicaraguans?
A. Pointing to the things they want with the lip.
B. Showing their strength by smacking the elbows.
C. Serving customers without saying “please” or “thank you”.
D. Greeting with a sound of what a Brit thinks of as calling animals.
5. Which word can best replace the underlined word “culinary” in Paragraph 4?
A. Trading. B. Cooking. C. Traveling. D. Communicating.
6. How many family members can be on a scooter according to the text?
A Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
7. What does the writer think of Nicaraguan culture after there for three years?
A. Strange and boring. B. Simple and uncivilized.
C. Backward but fascinating. D. Surprising but worth learning.

If you have been out and about in Atlanta, you have probably seen something very unusual—groups of people who are reading silently to themselves. These meet-ups are a way for people to read and socialize, which is part of a growing trend of Silent Book Club (SBC).
The global organization has over 1,000 branches where adults of all ages come to read. The first chapter was founded in San Francisco in 2012 by two women, and the idea really took off and is now fostering this love of reading and connection in 50 countries.
The Atlanta chapter usually has between 130 and 170 people attending. It is increasingly popular with the participants. “It is a space where I can quietly read with others,” Danielle Clarke, a reader with SBC Atlanta, said.
Once the reading session ends, people can move around and socialize with one another, or not. “As a new reader, I thought it would be special to step into this space with my books and hopefully meet new people,” said Spencer Bonner, another reader with SBC Atlanta.
SBC is part of a new resurgence (复苏) of the old-style book clubs, where everyone reads the same book and comes together to discuss it.
In this digital world where people work long days on computers, book clubs are a way to make genuine human offline connections.
“I want to connect with my friends in a context that doesn’t rely on spending money and the book club offers at least one inexpensive social opportunity per month,” one book club regular said.
Some book clubs focus on economic issues while others focus on literature. What they all have in common is that they give people a sense of belonging, something everyone needs.
8. What phenomenon will you see in Atlanta?
A. People seldom read alone. B. People read quietly together.
C. People like to get together. D. People spare no effort to socialize.
9. What can be learned about SBC?
A. It is female readers’ favourite. B. It focuses on literary works.
C. It is increasingly popular. D. It holds online reading events.
10. What does SBC satisfy according to the last paragraph?
A. Thirst for knowledge. B. Need to discussion.
C. Search for partners. D. Desire to belong.
11 What would be a suitable title for the text?
A. SBC: An Old Social Tradition B. SBC: Bridging Digital Divides
C. SBC: Redefining Literary Gatherings D. SBC: Mixing Reading And Socializing
D
While often seen as a negative (消极的) emotion, anger can also be a powerful motivator (促进因素) for people to achieve challenging goals in their lives, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
“People often believe that a state of happiness is perfect,” said lead author Heather Lench, PhD, a professor in the department of psychologcal and brain sciences at Texas A & M University, “but previous research suggests that a mix of emotions, including negative emotions like anger, results in good outcomes.”
The functionalist theory of emotion suggests that all emotions, good or bad, are reactions to events within a person’s environment and help that person to make proper actions, according to Lench. For example, sadness may suggest that a person needs to seek help or emotional support, while anger may indicate a person needs to take action to overcome an obstacle (障碍).
To better understand the role of anger in achieving goals, researchers conducted a series of experiments involving more than 1,000 participants and analyzed survey data from more than 1,400 respondents. In each experiment, participants either had an emotional response (such as anger, amusement, desire or sadness) or a neutral (中性的) emotional state, and then were presented with a challenging goal. Across all the experiments, anger improved people’s ability to reach their goals compared with a neutral condition in a variety of challenging situations.
“Our research adds to the growing evidence that a mix of positive and negative emotions promotes well-being, and that using negative emotions as tools can be particularly effective in some situations,” Lench said.
12. What is commonly believed concerning people’s emotions?
A. It is believed that a state of joy is great.
B. A feeling of sadness leads to poor effect.
C. Anger is actually a positive emotion.
D. Pride acts as an obstacle to success.
13. Why did researchers do a seres of experiments?
A. They hoped to overturn the previous findings.
B. They hoped to prove that a state of happiness is ideal.
C. They hoped to find the relationship between positive and negative emotions.
D. They hoped to have a better understanding of the role of anger in attaining goals.
14. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The problem of the research. B. The background of the research.
C. The process of the research. D. The significance of the research.
15. What’s Lench’s attitude to their research?
A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Uncaring. D. Critical.

Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. It can be easy to feel upset with overflowing email inboxes, housework, social responsibilities. ____16____ Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off!
There are three key reasons why lists are beneficial. Firstly, they help to drown out the disorder and anxiety that comes with having never-ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don’t have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand. ____17____ Secondly, lists provide structure and guidance, giving us a plan to follow. As well as this, our brains are more likely to keep information that is presented in a structure d and organized manner. ____18____ They act as proof of what we have achieved, which can help boost our sense of accomplishment and motivation. Seeing our progress on paper can be a great motivator to keep going and tackle more tasks.
Another reason why our brains love lists is something called the “Zeigarnik Effect”, which means we tend to better remember unfinished tasks than completed ones. Researchers found that people who permitted to plan had reduced anxiety and performed better in the next task. ____19____
In conclusion, the to-do list is an invaluable tool for managing our daily lives. ____20____ It just might be the key to unlocking your full potential.
A. Finally, lists give us the psychological boost as well.
B. Instead, we can check our lists to remind us of what's next.
C. This not only helps us stay organized but also reduces mental stress.
D. Nevertheless, making a to-do list is not always a straightforward process.
E. However, one simple tool that can help us stay on top of everything is the to-do list.
F. The next time you feel overwhelmed, grab a pen and paper, and start making your list.
G. This finding highlights the importance of completing tasks and crossing them off our lists.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.
Maddy’s daughter Cathy suffered from a condition called spina bifida (脊柱裂). She spent most of her life in a wheelchair, which made even the simplest tasks a tough challenge. One such challenge for Cathy was getting a haircut. As Maddy’s neighbor, I witnessed the daily struggle firsthand and felt the urge to help. A hairstylist myself, I decided to visit Maddy’s home to cut Cathy’s hair. Little did I know this small act would light a spark within me.
Through my visits, I realized that many others in our community had the same problem. Maddy explained the difficulties special groups of people encountered — the loud noises and strong smells in regular hair salons were too much for people with autism (自闭症). Also, just getting into a salon was tough for people in wheelchairs. Her words touched me, and I wondered if there was something more I could do to help.
An idea began to form in my mind — I could open a special salon, a place where people with physical disabilities or psychological problems would feel more comfortable. It wouldn’t just be easy to enter for people in wheelchairs; it would also have floors with different textures (纹理) to help those who can’t see well. To make the place even more comfortable, it would have calm music instead of loud pop songs. Toys and blankets would be on hand to help people stay calm. Hairstylists would use quiet hair dryers and soft voices. They would also learn how to help customers who don’t like others touching their hair. Most importantly, they would treat every customer with the same level of respect.
The only issue was that I didn’t have the funds to make this dream a reality. As a hairstylist, I had limited savings. Maddy suggested, “How about organizing a community bazaar (义卖) in our neighborhood this Saturday to raise funds for the salon?” Her eyes shone with enthusiasm as she continued, “People love supporting good causes, and I’m sure many would join in to help create a place where everyone feels comfortable getting a haircut.” I nodded, recognizing the brilliance in her plan.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: As Saturday approached, something changed in our neighborhood.

6 How many family members can be on a scooter according to the text?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.
7. What does the writer think of Nicaraguan culture after there for three years?
A. Strange and boring. B. Simple and uncivilized.
C. Backward but fascinating. D. Surprising but worth learning.
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. C 7. D

A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Uncaring. D. Critical.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. B

【答案】参考范文
Paragraph 1:
As Saturday approached, something changed in our neighborhood. The familiar streets became lively with colorful stalls, each offering different goods and crafts. The smell of freshly baked bread filled the air, and the sounds of laughter and cheerful chatter echoed along the sidewalks. Neighbors, young and old, flocked to the event, contributing not only as buyers but also as sellers and volunteers. Our community bazaar, once just an idea, had blossomed into a real gathering with a shared purpose. Seeing how successful the event was, I felt excited and grateful. Judging from Maddy’s smile, I knew she shared the same feeling with me.
Paragraph 2:
Even after the end of the community bazaar, our neighbors’ support didn’t stop there. Donations continued to flow in, and several local businesses reached out, offering to sponsor or donate materials for the salon. My heart would swell with joy every time I saw their enthusiastic smiles. After six months, we finally had enough funds to open our hair salon. I invited Cathy to be our first customer. As I watched the scissors cutting through the air, I realized it wasn’t just a haircut for Cathy — it symbolized the sympathy and victory of a community coming together to make a positive difference.
