I gave my first performance when I was ten. I’d been playing cello(大提琴) for two years at that point, as part of the music program. It was lucky that my school even had a cello, a very expensive instrument. When I told Mom and Dad that I was going to be a cellist, they both burst out 11 . Once they’d realized I was serious, they immediately put on supportive faces. I was eager to get a cello at that time, but they could only rent(租)one for me.
But their reaction still hurt me—in ways that I’m not sure they would’ve understood even if I had. Dad sometimes 12 that the hospital where I was born must have accidentally exchanged babies because I look nothing like the rest of my 13 . They are all blond and fair and with dark eyes. But as I got older, Dad’s hospital joke took on more meaning than I think he meant.
Then, it came to my first performance. Standing backstage, listening to other kids play the violin and piano, I’d almost 14 out. I’d run to stage door and hid outside. My teacher flew into a minor panic(惊慌) and sent out a search party.
Dad found me. “You okay, Mia?” he asked, sitting down next to me on the steps.
I shook my head, too 15 to talk. “What’s up?”
“I can’t do it,” I cried.
Dad put a gentle arm around my shoulder. “You know that I used to get super nervous before a show.”
I looked at Dad, who always seemed completely sure of everything in the world. “You’re just saying that.”
He 16 his head. “No, I’m not. I was the drummer, way in the back. No one even paid any attention to me.”
“He got wasted.” Mom interrupted. “He dropped his drumsticks and puked(呕吐)on stage.”
Now I was laughing. I was still scared, but it was somehow 17 to think that maybe stage fright was something I got from Dad. I wasn’t just some foundling(弃儿), after all.
“What if I mess it up? What if I’m terrible?”
“I’ve got news for you, Mia. There’s going to be all kinds of terrible things there, so you won’t really stand out.”
So I went on. I didn’t shine through the piece. I didn’t achieve a huge success, but I didn’t mess it up, either. And after the performance, I got my present. It was sitting in the passenger seat of the car, looking as human as that cello I’d been 18 to two years earlier. It wasn’t a rental. It was mine.

Unexpected friendship
There’s a small brick house I visit from time to time. It’s not the house that is special, but rather the person who lives inside.
I met Miss C about 45 years ago when she was my sister’s kindergarten teacher. I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. Miss C created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be in that moment. My parents reassured (安抚) me I could start school when I was 4. Though, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Miss C to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I was amazed by how she connected with children. For years, Miss C volunteered in my classroom.
Over the years we have shared in each other’s ups and downs. She asks me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.
I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement. We go through every painting a student has given her, every thank-you note a parent has written and her teaching aids (教具).
I find papers featuring the letters of the alphabet. I find my own name printed in green marker. Suddenly, my mind goes back to Room 3.
More than 40 years ago, Miss C sat on a chair while my classmates, and I sat on the carpet ( 地 毯 ) at her feet. We learned about the letters and their sounds. Now, Miss C sits on her rocking chair (摇椅), and I find myself sitting at her feet. Over tea, we talk for hours. I listen intently(专心地) because I know I still have more to learn from her.
Our friendship is one that neither one of us expected.

Today, the world is highly competitive. Governments, companies and individuals(个人) are all competing to be the best in the society. It is true that competition leads to better products and services; many people, especially parents, believe that being competitive is helpful for children because it prepares them for the modern world. However, is competition the first thing that our society needs?
Schools teach students to compete for better grades, while in businesses. people are better paid for their competitive performances. However, none of them realizes the adverse effects competition has on the society. For two companies in a competition, one will surely lose then disappear, while the other remains stronger in the market. If this is popular in a country, the number of companies may drop, and then the economy(经济) gets worse. Besides, competition may result in distrust in society.
Cooperation(合作)presents a different picture. Competition breaks relationships, while cooperation strengthens relationships. When we cooperate with others, we meet new people, we get to know new things, we share thoughts, we help each other and we succeed together. Cooperation focuses on the growth and development of everyone, as many people work together toward a common goal. This way, everyone is equally(相同地)developed.
The processes of cooperation have played an important role in shaping the history. Let's discuss the example of UN(United Nations). The UN’s calling is to keep world peace and create harmony (和谐). All nations have cooperated and will keep cooperating with one another to fight for a better future for the whole world.
Sports also provide us with a best example of cooperation. Think about how all members of the team forget who they themselves are and work only for the benefit of the team. Although sports are competitive by nature, when there is cooperation between the members, they encourage and support each other, and they get a greater chance of winning.
The development of both society and individual today depends on not just healthy competition but cooperation. Unfortunately, people are not taught cooperative skills at an early age, and this has encouraged a culture of competition in today's society. The skills of cooperation should be included in the educational system for children in their early ages. This way, children grow up into adults who value and welcome cooperation, which brings out the best in us.
( )30. According to the passage, competition causes____.
A. helpful suggestions and ideas B. excellent products and services
C. responsible children and parents D. confident performances and voice
( )31. What does the underlined word “adverse” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Harmful. B. Various. C. Helpful. D. Supportive
( )32. w hat can we learn from the passage?
A. The economy can grow rapidly in competition.
B. Sportsmen should not be cooperative to win the game.
C. UN was set up to call on people to create competition.
D. Kids should not just learn the skills of competition.
( )33. The writer probably agrees that_______.
A. people should value competition more than cooperation
B. people can perform better in competition than cooperation
C. people can benefit more from cooperation than competition
D. people should depend more on competition than cooperation ;

四、阅读表达(共10分)
So if you’re too busy, maybe it’s time you slowed down and enjoyed a meal with a friend. There has been a new trend(趋势) in food recently — getting away from fast food and moving toward “slow food”.
For years, the pace(节奏) of life was increasing for most people. People started eating fast food because they were too busy to cook. The trouble including buying, preparing and cleaning up after a meal was becoming more bother than it was worth clearly. Luckily, there were smart business people who took the chance to provide a “fast” way to deal with the problem. Almost overnight, you could drop by the supermarket and buy complete meals in packages. All you had to do was to heat the food and add salt, then you could be eating a delicious meal in 5 minutes.
Still too slow? OK, just drive your car up to the fast-food restaurant, order your meal and within 2 minutes it will be handed over to you with salt.
The problem is health. Fast food has much more oil, salt and empty calories and far less vitamins(维生素) than food freshly prepared at home. And so, since people have always wanted to live longer and healthier, a small but growing population is choosing not only fresh food, but also organically(有机)grown food — food that hasn’t been grown with chemical fertilizers(化肥).
Another reason for changes in eating habits is undoubtedly(无疑) social. Over the centuries, meal times have been used to visit, laugh and learn. That doesn’t fit with today’s lifestyle and many people are looking for ways to return to that. Goodbye McDonald’s.
Finally, there’s something unique(独特的) about planning your meal, buying just the right ingredients(食材) and seeing something on your table that looks just like the picture in your recipe book. So if you’re too busy, maybe it’s time you slowed down and enjoyed a meal with a friend.
30. Why did people start eating fast food?
