All snug and warm under his thick blanket, Kaya slowly opens his eyes. It is very cold in his tent, but he is used to that. In northern Greenland, where Kaya lives with his parents, it is so cold that the snow never melts.
Every morning on waking, he gives his young dog Miki a cuddle.
Sled dogs normally sleep outside, but not Miki. The poor thing injured his paw in a wolf hunt and can no longer keep up with the other dogs.
Kaya and Miki became friends. Best friends. Kaya looks after Miki.
Miki plays with Kaya. They are inseparable. Like brothers.
But this morning, Miki is nowhere to be seen.
Outside, the dogs are barking and yapping. To hear them, you'd think they were unhappy, but Kaya knows this is not the case.
In fact, they are really excited as today is the day of the 'big departure'. The dogs love pulling the sled! Kaya is less enthusiastic. He is worried about Miki.
"Dad," Kaya asks, "have you seen Miki?"
"No, I haven't."
"He wasn't in my tent this morning," Kaya explains.
"Well, you'd better find him quickly," replies his father, "as we're leaving at noon."
Kaya and his parents travel around a lot. They live off hunting and fishing, so are always on the move. Kaya sets off to look for his friend. Very soon he notices paw prints in the snow.
Kaya would recognise those paw prints anywhere: Miki's.
The little rascal has gone for a walk. That's not like him!
The prints lead to the frozen lake, where Kaya's father has come to fish every day since setting up camp.
The fish here are big and meaty, just how Kaya likes them.
Just how Miki likes them… However the little tyke isn't there.
Kaya stares at the holes his father has left – the ones he's caught fish through. Something crosses Kaya's mind; a thought that makes his heart pound.
"I hope Miki hasn't fallen in!" worries Kaya.
The water is freezing, and Miki is only little.
Kaya rushes to the edge of one of the holes, but how would he know if Miki had fallen in? He looks around... Phew! No paw prints.
Miki can't have set foot on the frozen lake after all.
Maybe he went to the farthest point of land… where the land turns into an ice field; where the ice field becomes sea. Kaya has never been there. His father won't let him. Because that's where Nanuq lives.
Nanuq is a polar bear. A bad-tempered bear who cannot stand human company. He prefers to surround himself with seals, which he hunts for food. Miki doesn't look anything like a seal!
However, Kaya can't help but imagine the worst.
Nanuq is nowhere to be seen. Just recently, the ice melted and the polar bears made their way north to where the daylight, like the night-time, lasts for six months.
No Nanuq, but no Miki either. Kaya lost his trail some time ago now.
With a heavy heart, he knows he must return to camp.
If Miki doesn't come back, they will have to leave without him.
Kaya will not be able to bear it.
Kaya has been tramping through the snow for a long time now.
The wind is biting and he is getting colder and colder. To get back to camp, Kaya must first cross the "monster's jaw". Here, the rocks are so sharp that they pierce the snow, like lots of jagged teeth pointing at the sky.
Kaya is out of breath. His feet are sinking deep into the blanket of snow. A little way off, there is a worrying shadow. But Kaya is not scared. Kaya isn't scared of anything.
It's just a caribou, Kaya tells himself. Nothing to worry about.
But the shadow is drawing ever closer. No caribou would do that.
OK, so Kaya is scared – sometimes.
Finally able to make out the animal, Kaya catches his breath.
He is in great danger.
A wolf. But a lone wolf only hunts small prey.
It would never attack a human. Yet Kaya is only little...
And wolves don't like people trespassing on their territory.
The predator stares at him, unblinking. Then, all of a sudden...
All of a sudden... Miki appears.
He is still young and his injured paw makes him a poor runner.
Even so, he has a brave heart and will not let anyone or anything attack Kaya. Several gruff barks cause the wolf to turn and flee.
Miki hadn't gone far, and when he had returned to snuggle up under Kaya's blanket, the little boy had already left.
The two friends had been searching for each other.
Because they are inseparable. Like brothers.
SOME INFORMATION ABOUT GREENLAND
Although Greenland is very close to America, it is actually is a country linked to Denmark, situated in Europe.
Greenland is an island almost entirely covered with ice. It is not an ice floe, which is a large pack of floating ice.
There are less than 60,000 inhabitants in Greenland, a thousand times less than in a country like France, it has a 4 timesbigger territory.
Originally, Inuits were nomad hunters that moved constantly. Today, most of the Inuits are sedentary, but a lot of them still live off hunting and fishing.
It's time to go! Kaya's family and all the sled dogs are ready to hit the road. All but one, as Miki, Kaya's inseparable companion has gone missing. Kaya is very worried.
He decides to go looking for his dog. Where is he? Is he healthy and safe?
Are you ready for a fantastic trip into the High North to find out the day-to-day life of Kaya, the little Inuit?
