B This past January, Captain Preet Chandi set foot on a historic and decidedly icy trail, becoming the first woman of color to reach the South Pole alone, without assistance. While others might have been content to make history with this singular accomplishment, “Polar Preet” Chandi is not one to rest on her achievements. The journey to the South Pole was merely “phase one” of a larger and even more extraordinary goal for the adventurous British Army officer. “For phase two”, the 33-year-old has set her sights on crossing Antarctica — once again doing the journey alone and unsupported to become the first woman to achieve this goal. On November 14, Chandi departed from Hercules Inlet, an ice-filled bay at the southwestern section of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf bordering the Weddell Sea in Antarctica. Her goal is to reach Reedy Glacier within 75 days, a coast-to-coast journey consisting of roughly 1,100 miles. And “roughly” is the key word here — she’ll be pulling a sled (雪橇) with equipment weighing about 264 pounds altogether, and she’ll be doing so in temperatures that can sink to minus 58 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Her journey thus far required years of training. Prior to her 700-mile South Pole journey she prepared by attending a polar survival course in Norway. She continued her training back home in the UK by dragging tires, the closest thing to pulling a sled, and a month-long practice run in Greenland. Ultimately, Chandi went on to finish her first South Pole expedition in 40 days, eight full days ahead of schedule. In addition to setting records of human endurance (忍耐力) in extreme conditions, Chandi tries to inspire others in her day-to-day work. Chandi will be posting interval (间隔) voice blog updates of her phase two progress on her website, polarpreet.com, where a live tracking map will also provide her current location at every point along her journey. “Nothing is impossible. I’ve always had this idea that I can achieve something great, something that allows me to be a role model,” Chandi shared on her blog. 4. Why does Chandi want to cross Antarctica? A. To stick to a promise. B. To take further challenges. C. To raise money for poor women. D. To realize her childhood dream. 5. Why does the author stress the word “roughly” in Paragraph 3? A. To indicate that there are more challenges faced by Chandi. B. To hide the author’s bad memory of numbers. C. To explain that there is no proper word to describe the journey. D. To show there is no official figure about the distance to Antarctica. 6. What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. Chandi got trained by pulling sleds. B. The journey to the South Pole was eventful. C. Survival training was a hard process. D. Chandi made full preparations for her adventure. 7. Which words can best describe Chandi? A. Inspiring and friendly. B. Active and creative. C. Adventurous and modest. D. Confident and determined. C Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. They did it using videos shot by some sea animals. The work should help protect the sea grass, and also shows off a creative way to explore the ocean. The sea grass is flowering plants that normally grow in shallow waters near coasts. It grows in thick fields, known as meadows. Sea grass meadows help clean the ocean water, and provide food and home for many sea creatures. Importantly, sea grass meadows also help in the fight against the climate problems. That’s because they store a great deal of carbon — the harmful pollution that’s making global warming worse. Damaging these sea grass meadows can emit this pollution again, so it’s important to protect them. However, the ocean is too huge for humans to study all by diving. A team of scientists decided to have tiger sharks help with the research because tiger sharks live underwater, swim fast and spend a lot of time in sea grass meadows. The scientists attached cameras and other trackers to seven tiger sharks. After catching the sharks, the scientists worked quickly to attach the equipment, and then let them go again. The cameras were designed to fall off after a few hours and float to the surface. Tracking signals helped the scientists find the floating cameras and collect the videos the sharks had taken over the sea floor. Putting all the data together, the scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest sea grass meadow ever discovered. The project is important for several reasons. Since sea grass is so valuable in fighting global warming, it’s important to know where it is. Oliver Shipley, a leading scientist, says. “If we don’t know where it is, we can’t protect it.” The program also shows how useful large sea animals can be in helping to learn more about life under the sea. Shipley says animals like tiger sharks “are going to take us to new places that we didn’t know.” 8. What helped the scientists discover the largest ever field of sea grass? A. Videos taken by tiger sharks. B. Ships working underwater. C. Images shot from passing planes. D. Exploration of professional divers. 9. What does the underlined word “emit” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. cut down. B. clear away. C. let out. D. wind up. 10. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. The ways of following large sea animals — tiger sharks. B. The steps of fixing cameras to the tiger sharks. C. The unique functions of the signal-tracking equipment. D. The process of finding the world’s largest known sea grass meadow. 11. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Sea grass is of high value in research and business. B. Ocean animals can help uncover more secrets of nature. C. Humans have benefited from pollution-free oceans. D. Scientists have solved the climate problems effectively. D Role models are important for inspiring scientists, but new research suggests that scientists who are known for their hard work are more encouraging than scientists who are viewed as naturally brilliant. In a series of studies, researchers found that young people were more motivated (激励) by scientists whose success was connected with efforts than those whose success was because of natural intelligence, even if that scientist was Albert Einstein. Danfei Hu, a doctoral student at the Pennsylvania State University, and Janet N. Ann. an assistant professor of Psychology at William Paterson University, said the findings — recently published in Basic and Applied Social Psychology — would help deal with the certain secret about what it takes to succeed in science. According to the researchers, there is anxiety in the science community about a number of students who run after careers in science during school only to drop out of those career paths once they graduate from college. To help solve the problem, Hu and Ann wanted to research role models, who give the students specific goals, behavior or strategies they can follow. The researchers performed studies with 176 and 162 participants in each study respectively (分别). In the first study, all participants read the same story about common struggles a scientist met in his science career. However, half were told the story was about Einstein, while half were told it was about Thomas Edison. Although the stories were the same, participants were more likely to believe natural brilliance was the reason for Einstein’s success. In addition, the participants who believe the story was about Edison were more motivated to complete a series of maths problems. “This proved that people generally seem to view Einstein as a genius, with his success commonly linked to extraordinary talent,” Hu said. “Edison, on the other hand, is known for failing more than 1,000 times when trying to create the light bulb, and his success is linked to his efforts.” Hu added, “Knowing that something great can be achieved through hard work and efforts, more students will step into the science career confidently.” 12 What kind of scientist is more inspiring? A. Those who made important discoveries. B Those who were born with a gift. C. Those who are viewed as great inventors. D. Those who are famous for their hard work. 13. What is the concern in the science community? A. The students will drop out of school soon. B. There are fewer role models for students to follow. C. Fewer students will continue to work on science. D. Some scientists cannot give students specific goals. 14. Why were some participants motivated to complete a series of maths problems? A. They knew the problems were given by Edison. B. They believed they could solve the problems by working hard. C. They believed they were as intelligent as Einstein. D. They knew they were to work together with Einstein and Edison. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Einstein Is Less Encouraging than Edison B. Einstein’s Success Story C. How to Be a Great Scientist D. Edison’s Achievements Are Greater What do you do with old stuff? That top you bought for a party three years ago, for example. She was known for her kind heart and gentle nature. The townsfolk adored her very much and often sought her out for advice or a listening ear. Lily always showed her best passion in helping them, which made people in the town think highly of her. One sunny afternoon, as Lily was walking through the town square, she noticed a small, shabby-looking man sitting alone on a park bench. His seemingly decent clothes were worn out, and his face bore the marks of a hard life, appearing helpless and being in low spirits. Feeling obliged to help, Lily approached him with a warm smile. “Hello there, sir,” she greeted kindly. “Is there anything I can do for you?” The man looked up, surprise flickering (闪烁) in his weary eyes. “I...I’ve lost my way,” he replied hesitantly. “I don’t have a home. I haven’t had anything to eat for several days, and I have no idea who I can turn to for help.” Upon knowing his hardships, Lily decided to offer him some food and a place to stay. She introduced him to her family, who welcomed him with open arms and invited him to have dinner and stay with them. The man, who introduced himself as Samuel, began to regain his strength after gracefully filing himself with the delicious food provided by the warmhearted family. He expressed his sincere gratitude to them for the food and accommodation. Months passed, and Samuel settled into a routine and became part of their household. He became skilled at various tasks and his genuine gratitude endeared him to everyone. He shared stories of his past adventures, in which he even had a narrow escape, and the family were surprised at his experience and admired his courage as well as wisdom. Prior to her 700-mile South Pole journey, she prepared by attending a polar survival course in Norway. 4. B 5. A 6. D 7. Prior to her 700-mile South Pole journey, she prepared by attending a polar survival course in Norway. She continued her training back home in the UK by dragging tires, the closest thing to pulling a sled, and a month-long practice run in Greenland.(到目前为止,她的旅程需要多年的训练。 根据第一段“This past January, Captain Preet Chandi set foot on a historic and decidedly icy trail, becoming the first woman of color to reach the South Pole alone, without assistance.(今年1月,Captain Preet Chandi踏上了一条具有历史意义的、绝对冰冷的小径,成为第一位在没有帮助的情况下独自到达南极的有色人种女性)”可知,Preet Chandi克服困难,成功地独自一人抵达南极点,这说明她有着坚定的意志;再结合最后一段“Nothing is impossible. I’ve always had this idea that I can achieve something great, something that allows me to be a role model(没有什么是不可能的。 D。 C Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. 8. A 9. C 10. D 11. Putting all the data together, the scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest sea grass meadow ever discovered.(研究人员在七只虎鲨身上安装了摄像头和其他追踪器。 根据最后一段“The program also shows how useful large sea animals can be in helping to learn more about life under the sea. Shipley says animals like tiger sharks ‘are going to take us to new places that we didn’t know.’(该项目还展示了大型海洋动物在帮助更多地了解海底生物方面是多么有用。 B。 D Role models are important for inspiring scientists, but new research suggests that scientists who are known for their hard work are more encouraging than scientists who are viewed as naturally brilliant. “Edison, on the other hand, is known for failing more than 1,000 times when trying to create the light bulb, and his success is linked to his efforts.” Hu added, “Knowing that something great can be achieved through hard work and efforts, more students will step into the science career confidently.” 12. What kind of scientist is more inspiring? A. Those who made important discoveries. B. Those who were born with a gift. Edison’s Achievements Are Greater 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. One evening, as Lily and Samuels at on the porch, watching the sunset behind the hills, Samuel turned to her with a glimmer in his eye. “Lily,” he said softly, “I have a secret to share with you.” Lily’s curiosity seized her, and she leaned in closer. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ True to his word, Samuel lived up to his promise of giving Lily a large sum of money. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Lily’s curiosity seized her, and she leaned in closer. “What is it, Samuel?” “I may have appeared lost and homeless when we met,” Samuel said with a smile. Confusion spread across Lily’s face as she listened attentively. “But I am actually a millionaire,” Samuel continued. “I disguised myself to see if there were still good-hearted people in the world. And you, Lily, have proved to me that genuine kindness still exists.” Lily was speechless, a mix of shock and awe washing over her. Ready to reward Lily for her kindness, Samuel ensured that her family would be blessed with abundance. True to his word, Samuel lived up to his promise of giving Lily a large sum of money. Lily’s family found themselves never lacking daily necessities. Instead, they were always enveloped in wealth, but they never forgot the lesson of kindness that began with the encounter on that park bench. They used their newfound fortune to help others in need, who also passed on kindness to their neighbors. And so, the small town became known for its endless kindness, which was forever changed by Samuel who was not what he seemed. 乔装打扮:disguised /dressed up ③.传递:passed on/handed on 情绪类 ①.
