Members volunteer to create and lead a variety of bicycle tours. Our club goes back over 40 years to the Bicycle Touring Society. We have a large number of members who have been with the club for many years. We enjoy the fellowship of exploring the world with our cycling friends on tours developed by club members for other members. Membership in BAC is open to experienced touring cyclists over 18 years old. The membership fee to join is $ 30 for an individual and $ 60 for a couple; renewal fees each year after that are $20 for individuals and $40 for couples and is due on the anniversary of your join date. New BAC members are required to have email access in order to receive club communications and to apply for club rides. Each rider brings his/her own bicycle or rents one suitable for the ride. The bicycle should be in good condition and each rider is responsible for performing his or her own bike maintenance (维护) as necessary. It is up to each participant to determine that he or she is able to do any ride for which they sign up. However, the ride leader makes the final determination as to who is accepted for each ride. B Ray Tokuda, a 54-year-old Japanese- American, is proud of the title his school has given him. He is a Shifu, a Chinese word meaning a master of martial arts (武术). Tokuda has reason to be proud. He has been involved with Chinese martial arts for almost forty years. After learning them at the martial arts school in New Mexico State, today he is among the most experienced kung fu teachers of the school. Practicing martial arts two to three hours and helping students improve their skills have become Tokuda’s daily routine. He expects to practice and teach martial arts for the rest of his life. “I’m still learning. It’s worth more than a lifetime to learn Chinese martial arts,” he said. “Once I started, I just couldn’t stop. I think it’s also the magic of Chinese culture.” Tokuda was sent to the martial arts school when he was 10. He still remembers how unwilling he was when starting out. “My father had always wanted to learn Chinese martial arts but he never got the chance, so he wanted his kid to learn it,” he said. “I was so afraid at that time because I thought kung fu was all about fighting.” But things changed after he learned that martial arts were more than punching and kicking. “One of the things martial arts teach me is overcoming difficulties,” Tokuda said. “As a little kid, my first lesson was like, oh, look, this is a thing that I can get through by hard work and perseverance (毅力), and that was priceless for my life.” Learning Chinese martial arts opened a gateway for him to better understand Chinese culture because he could hear a lot of ancient Chinese kung fu-related stories. He said, “I feel martial arts preserve something of ancient China that can’t be found in books. They are sort of an oral history.” Tokuda has also been invited to various events in his home state to show traditional Chinese culture, including the dragon dance and lion dance, which he also learnt at the martial arts school. Because of this, he is now considered a cultural envoy (使者) in the eyes of the public. 4. Tokuda refused to learn kung fu at first because he had thought it was ________. A. violent B. magical C. practical D. difficult 5. Why was Tokuda sent to learn Chinese martial arts? A. He was crazy about Chinese culture. B. He wanted to be a martial arts master. C. His father had wanted to learn but could not. D. His parents wanted to better understand Chinese culture. 6. From the passage, what can we learn about Tokuda? A. He learnt martial arts from his father. B. He is the founder of the kung fu school. C. He learnt from martial arts how to deal with difficulties D. He is the most experienced kung fu teacher of his state. 7. Which of the following words can best describe Tokuda? A. Outgoing and friendly. B. Talented and humorous. C. Responsible and confident. D. Determined and hard-working. C Do you get nervous thinking about geometry, equations (方程式) or a coming math test? If your answer is “yes”, you are far from alone. Math anxiety has become a common psychological (心理的) condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb. 15. Math anxiety—a negative emotional reaction to the core subject—causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when meeting with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear. Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid every situation involving numbers, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to this subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian. Reassurance (慰藉) comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren’t destined (注定的) to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math and there are ways to improve math achievement,” Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged.” Also there are ways to manage your stress related to math. If you’re feeling stressed before a math exam, it may help to spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist in the US told the BBC. “Just because you have a fast heartbeat and sweaty palms, that does not necessarily mean you will fail.” A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fright before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University in the US. 8. What does the author focus on in Paragraphs 2 and 3? A. Analyzing causes. B. Proving examples. C. Explaining influences. D. Drawing comparisons. 9. What message do Daniel Ansari’s words convey in Paragraph 4? A. Math anxiety is what leads to students’ failure. B. Math anxiety is what nearly everyone will face. C. Math anxiety doesn’t necessarily mean poor math. D. Math anxiety doesn’t necessarily allow improvement space. 10. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article? A. Learn to understand your feelings. B. Turn to cognitive experts for help. C. Take all nervous energy as a challenge. D. Practice more before taking math exams. 11. What is the best title for the passage? A. What is anxiety? B. Worried by numbers C. How to avoid studying math? D. Math test -a nightmare for all D Soil is one of the most important materials of daily life. It’s necessary for growing the food and resources we depend on, protecting against drought (干旱) and flooding and storing carbon dioxide for years to come. But the dirt under our feet is constantly in danger because of rising temperatures and loss of biodiversity caused by climate change. Although we may think soil is simple, it’s pretty hard to know what’s really going on deep in the ground from the surface. Scientists in Italy, however, think they may have a robotic solution—a seed-inspired (受种子启发的) robot. Scientists at the Bioinspired Soft Robotics (BSR) Lab have developed the first 4D-printed seed-inspired soft robot, which can act as sensors for monitoring pollutants, CO2 levels, temperature and humidity (湿度) in soil. They were inspired by a South African geranium (a garden plant). The seeds of the plant have the ability to change shape in response to how humid their environment is. When the time comes for the seeds to leave the plant, they can separate themselves from the plant and move independently to find their way through soil. The curly seeds can find a home for themselves simply by becoming bigger or smaller depending on the water content in the air. The team imitated the seeds and developed robots that use materials that also change shape when exposed (暴露) to humidity. When tested in a soil sample, the robot was able to rock from side to side, adapt its shape to the space, and get into holes in the ground like a natural seed. Not to mention, it was capable of lifting things about 100 times its own weight. First author Luca Cecchini said that the robot is easy to break down and causes no harm to the soil. It could be used as a wireless, battery-free tool for surface soil exploration and monitoring. 12. What can be learned about soil from paragraph 1? A. It is at risk. B. It can be easily polluted. C. It is seldom studied by scientists. D. It is partly responsible for climate problems. 13. What is the scientists’ purpose of inventing the robot? A. To deal with climate change. B. To improve farming efficiency. C. To monitor the condition of soil. D. To test the 4D-printing technology. 14. What is the basic design feature of the seed-inspired robot? A. Controlling the soil temperature. B. Changing the shape of plant seeds. C. Carrying the seeds to the right place. D. Adapting to humidity changes in soil. 15. What did Luca Cecchini say about the robot? A. It is highly affordable. B. It is environment-friendly. C. It doesn’t perform well in the field. D. It works well under extreme conditions. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Voluntourism Volunteering to help people in need combined with travelling to faraway places is a new trend in the travel industry. It is called voluntourism. People travel to other countries, learn languages and gain new experiences. _______16_______ Recent statistics show that in the past few years voluntourism has been one of the fastest-growing areas of tourism. More than 1.6 million people around the world are volunteers in other countries. They help build schools, assist in hospitals and do farming work in developing countries. _____17_____ They keep in touch with their host families after they return home, and many return to visit. There are many reasons why people want to engage in voluntourism. When people choose to join a voluntourism program, they are joining a global network of volunteers who are living and working with diverse cultures on projects that have a positive effect. The volunteers come from all over the world, and they will share the passion for giving back and the desire to broaden horizons. Some students also see it as a gap year after school, while others simply want to take time out from a job and do something else. _____18_____ However, many voluntourists do not see volunteering as what it is. They think it is a cheap way of travelling and don’t really want to get involved in hard work. While voluntourism has been around for over a century, modern volunteering started with the Peace Corps, a program that the US government started in the 1960s. From then on, voluntourism has become more and more popular. Many organizations start similar projects. _____19_____ And they have hundreds of different types of programs for people to choose from in more than 30 developing countries. The programs run year round and each volunteer chooses when they want to start and the duration they would like to stay for. ___20___ They say that if people really want to help those in need there are many opportunities in their own community to do this. On the other side, volunteers are often not skilled enough for the tasks that they do. Travel experts point out that in some cases voluntourists are often taken advantage of by the organization that sets up the trips. A. Not everyone sees voluntourism in a positive way. B. Some of them establish lasting bonds with people there. C. And there are those who are bored and merely seek adventure. D. Most voluntourism organizations employ people from similar fields. E. They find it is the best way to get the best of the world. F. By participating in voluntourism, they are contributing to local economy. G. They offer voluntourism trips to suit people’s interest, experience level or age. One year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms (习语), though my teacher told me about them again and again. It is through her dedication that she consistently ranks at the top of her class, setting an example for all of us. Amy’s personality shines not only in her studies but also in campus activities. She organizes workshops for the science club, encouraging students to explore new ideas and develop skills. It is her positive attitude that makes others feel welcome and supported, especially when she helps classmates with their studies. It is clear that Amy has had a positive influence on me. By seeing how she balances her studies and club activities, I am motivated to get more involved and face my own challenges. Her example encourages me to explore my interests and make the most of my time on campus. 1-5 BCAAB 6-10 CAABC 11-15 BABCC 15-20 CBCBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
