Women are such amazing beings and if you need a bit of inspiration to keep going, here are stories of inspiring women who made a mark on history!
Jane Austen (1775-1817)
She wrote about what life was like during the late 1700s and early 1800s through the books Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma. These books were released within just four years of each other. Two other books, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published after she died. Her face is now on the new £10 note, reminding us every day how much her books have affected us all.
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
She was born into a wealthy family, which disapproved of her entering the nursing profession. After receiving a letter from the Secretary of War who asked her to put together a team and look after British soldiers during the Crimen War, she moved to London. This was the first time that women were allowed to serve in the army. She went home as a hero and even received a thank-you letter from Queen Victoria. She left a legacy in healthcare in the war.
Marie Curie (1867-1934)
One of the most famous scientists of all time comes in the form of Marie Curie. Together with her fellow scientist and husband Pierre, she made amazing work on their discoveries. In1903, they received a Nobel Prize. She won another Nobel Prize in 1911, the first woman to do so. The Curies were the pair who made discoveries on radioactivity, which paved the way for the creation of X-rays.
Mother Teresa (1910-1997)
In September 2016, Mother Teresa was announced to be named as a Saint, which she deserves after her devotion to helping people in poverty. In 1929, she traveled to India and dedicated her whole life to helping poor people, especially in the Indian city of Kolkata. She received the Nobel Prize in 1979 and canceled the big dinner celebration. She then suggested giving all of the money to the poor people in Kolkata.

When you think about who’s responsible for a city’s safety, what people come to mind? Police officers, firefighters or emergency response teams? Would you put your local meteorologist (气象预报员) in this group? That’s the career Ashley Ruiz chose, and she’s now the first female chief meteorologist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ruiz predicts the weather for her community.
In 2020, a tornado hit Ruiz’s hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee — and, even closer to home, her house. So she said she knew what a lifesaving job this could be.
However, her job isn’t without difficulties. “Hearing people have been injured, like in a big hurricane, is really hard,” she said. “We try our best to predict the weather as best as we can, and we are getting better. But it can always change.”
Ruiz talked about the new and changing weather patterns. She said, “We are absolutely seeing changes in weather, with more intense and more frequent storms, which relate to climate change.” Weather is changing everywhere, as the planet warms. There are more frequent droughts, stronger storms, and increasing temperature changes. This makes predicting the weather difficult.
Ruiz always knew she was interested in weather and how it affected the world. But her path to a career in meteorology wasn’t easy. She said, “I struggled so hard with math and wanted to give up. But I kept pushing and working hard, and now I’m the first woman chief meteorologist in the Baton Rouge TV market. I’m proud of that.” She wants kids to know they should never give up on their education or their dreams.
4. Why was the disaster in Ruiz’s hometown mentioned in the text?
A. To call on people to prepare for disasters.
B. To introduce Ruiz’s unusual childhood experience.
C. To offer a successful example of weather forecast.
D. To show Ruiz’s understanding of the work of a meteorologist.
5 What is a challenge of predicting the weather according to the text?
A. Climate change. B. People’s injury.
C Poor technology. D. Lack of experience.
6. Which word can best describe Ruiz according to the last paragraph?
A. Creative. B. Clever. C. Hard-working. D. World-famous.
7. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear?
A. Sports. B. People. C. Education. D. Health.
D 5. A 6. C 7. B

People who have trouble walking often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It’s called Seatrac.
Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (轻便梯) that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can also help anyone else who has a hard time walking, including older people and pregnant women.
Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. The idea for it came when one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn’t like having to be carried into the ocean as if he were a sack (袋) of potatoes.
Mr. Fotiou realized that there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr. Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. In time, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell it.
The company worked hard to make the system simple to put in place and easy to run. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar-powered. It doesn’t require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when the swimming season ends.
This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Latvia. TOBEA hopes to offer Seatrac in other countries soon.
The Seatrac service in Greece is being offered for free. The Greek government has helped pay for it, with local cities buying and managing the equipment. Greece’s government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.
8. Who is Seatrac designed for?
A. Older people who move freely.
B. Youths who like to swim in the sea.
C. Women who enjoy beach baths with their children.
D. People who have trouble moving around on the beach.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The system. B. Potato. C. Ramp. D. Normal wheelchair.
10. What can we learn about the Seatrac system?
A. It’s not easy to operate.
B. Users don’t have to worry about charging it.
C. People need to have a big cost to use it in Greece.
D. It has been available at more than one thousand beaches.
11. Why does the Greek government help pay for the Seatrac service?
A. To improve the government’s image.
B. To promote the development of tourism.
C. To set up an organization for the disabled.
D. To support small and medium-sized local companies.
D 9. A 10. B 11. B
根据第一段“People who have trouble walking often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It’s called Seatrac.(走路有困难的人通常很难享受海滩。但希腊数百个海滩现在为坐轮椅的人自己下水提供了一种新方式。它叫做Seatrac。)”可知,希腊在数百个海滩为行动不便的人提供了自动操作的轮椅入水坡道系统 Seatrac。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据上文的“Mr. Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system.(福蒂欧和他的搭档以及希腊一所大学的教授一起设计了这个系统。)” 故选A项。
根据第五段中的“The system is solar-powered. It doesn’t require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out.(该系统是太阳能驱动的。它不需要外部电源,即使停电也能继续运行。)”可知,这个系统是太阳能驱动的,所以使用者不用担心它的充电问题。故选B项。
【11题详解】

Greece’s government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.(希腊政府帮助支付了这笔费用,由当地城市购买和管理设备。
D
In late June, the US government agreed to allow two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, to sell chicken meat that has been grown in a laboratory. That makes the US the second country to approve lab-grown chicken.
Unlike normal chicken meat, lab-grown meat isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Instead, it’s a meat product developed from animal cells that are grown in a lab. So it is also called “cell-based” or “cultured” meat.
The process of creating lab-grown meat is completely different from the normal meat-raising process. The first cells come from live animals. The cells are grown inside large steel tanks, where they’re fed with everything they need to grow. In a few weeks, the cells grow to look like normal meat. The companies then form this meat into more familiar shapes.
The companies say that their meat is better for the environment than meat from animals.
Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. It also creates a lot of pollution. Raising animals for food creates about 15% of the world’s greenhouse gases. That’s why cutting back on eating meat is one of the easiest ways to fight climate change. Lab-grown meat can also help out in other ways. Raising animals for food is extremely hard on animals. They are often kept in small spaces and are treated badly.
Polls (民意调查) have shown that many people aren’t too interested in lab-grown meat. Lots of people believe that it just sounds weird. But Amy Chen, who works for Upside Foods, says that once people try the meat, “The most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’”
But right now, the meat is far more expensive than meat from animals. Even though the companies have been approved, they have the huge challenge of figuring out how to make much more meat far more cheaply.
12. What can we know about lab-grown chicken meat?
A. It is created from animal cells in a laboratory.
B. It is cheaper than the normal meat.
C. America is the first country to approve selling it.
D. Two companies are allowed to do research on it.
13. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The necessity of eating normal meat.
B. The process of creating lab-grown meat.
C. The disadvantages of raising animals for food.
D. The similarities between lab-grown meat and normal meat.
14. What does the underlined word “weird” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Easy. B. Ordinary. C. Strange. D. Attractive.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Lab-grown Meat Is Outdated
B. What Exactly Is Lab-grown Meat?
C. How Is the Lab-grown Chicken Made?
D. Lab-grown Chicken Meat Is Coming
A 13. C 14. C 15. D
根据文章第二段“Unlike normal chicken meat, lab-grown meat isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Instead, it’s a meat product developed from animal cells that are grown in a lab. So it is also called “cell-based” or “cultured” meat.(与普通的鸡肉不同,实验室培育的肉并不是通过饲养和宰杀鸡只来获得的。相反,它是一种在实验室中从动物细胞中培育出来的肉类产品。因此,它也被称为“细胞基”或“培养”肉。)”可知,实验室培育的鸡肉不是通过饲养和宰杀鸡只来获得的,而是从在实验室中培养的动物细胞中培育出来的。因此,我们可以知道实验室培育的鸡肉是由实验室中的动物细胞制成的。故选A。
根据文章第五段“Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. They are often kept in small spaces and are treated badly.(饲养动物作为食物会消耗大量的土地和水资源。
根据划线单词上文“Polls (民意调查) have shown that many people aren’t too interested in lab-grown meat.(民意调查显示许多人对实验室培育的肉类并不太感兴趣。)” 再根据下文“But Amy Chen, who works for Upside Foods, says that once people try the meat, “The most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’”(但 Upside Foods 的Amy Chen表示,一旦人们尝过这种肉,“我们得到的最常见的回应是,‘哦,它的味道就像鸡肉。’”)”
根据文章第一段“In late June, the US government agreed to allow two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, to sell chicken meat that has been grown in a laboratory. That makes the US the second country to approve lab-grown chicken.(六月底,美国政府同意允许两家公司 Upside Foods 和 Good Meat 销售在实验室培育的鸡肉。

故填who。
故填an。
故填was。
分析句子成分可知,it作为形式宾语,而真正的宾语是后面的不定式短语to take her children to register at school。故填to take。
the speeches that people made指“人们的演讲”,因为speech是可数名词,泛指,所以使用它的复数形式。
have a preference for表示“对……有偏爱”,所以此处填所给词的名词形式。故填preference。
【45题详解】
考查连词。句意:她对加拿大人怀有深厚的感情和敬意。这里连接两个并列的名词 affection和respect,所以用并列连词。故填and。

In our daily lives, art takes many forms. We see it in paintings that decorate our walls, in the music that fills our ears, and in the dance that moves our souls. Even the way we arrange flowers or design our clothes can be considered art. It’s everywhere, making our world more colorful and lively.
To me, art is not just something to look at or listen to; it’s a way of expressing feelings and thoughts that words sometimes can’t. When I create art, I feel free to be myself and share my inner world with others. Art makes life richer and more meaningful.
Thanks for listening.

I teach high school history to a group of sixteen-to eighteen-year-olds. One particular student, Emily, is dangerously close to failing not only the entire course but the end-of-year exam. She must pass the course. Otherwise, she would have to repeat the entire year. That’s really a pity. She is the type of student who is incredibly bright, switched on and engaging. But she’s been hanging out with some naughty kids since her parents divorced. It was a group of students who didn’t love learning and just wanted to have fun every day.
This part of the story occurred just after a paper was due. The paper was meant to assess just how well the students knew the course material that we had covered before the end-of-year exam. I handed out everyone’s marked and graded paper except for Emily’s, who was sitting with her friend group.
Looking at Emily, I said to her in a peaceful voice, “Emily, when I dismiss everyone else, I want to see you privately, please.”
A collective “ooooooh” hissed around the class. Emily was obviously a little bit worried about what this might be. I dismissed the class and sat opposite Emily, her paper in my hand.
“So, how do you think you did on your paper?” I asked.
Emily replied, “It seems that I don’t get the material, right? Why do you always —”. But I gently interrupted with a warm smile, “You don’t get it? That’s strange.”
“Actually, Emily, you’ve surprised us all,” I said, turning the paper to reveal a big, fat A+ next to her name. “Because your paper perfectly summarized the issues we discussed this semester about class difference in the Victorian Era. Obviously, this is your area of expertise,” I explained.
Emily’s eyes widened in disbelief. “W-what?”
I continued, “Your paper was the highest-scoring one I’ve ever had. I’m completely serious.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Emily was obviously shocked

After this conversation, I noticed a big change in Emily.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Emily was obviously shocked. Her mouth dropped open, and her hands instinctively reached for the paper I was still holding. Her eyes scanned the grade, then looked back at me in astonishment. “But, Mr. ..., I mean, I didn’t even think I passed!” she stammered. I could see the wheels turning in her mind, processing the unexpected praise and the grade that didn’t align with her self-perception. Her face slowly lit up with a mix of disbelief and joy, as if she was seeing a new possibility for herself.
After this conversation, I noticed a big change in Emily. She started coming to class earlier, actively participating in discussions, and even initiating conversations about historical topics outside of class. Her grades soared, and she became a model student for her peers. The influence of her previous friend group seemed to diminish as she found new, like-minded friends who valued education and personal growth. Emily’s transformation was nothing short of remarkable, a testament to the power of positive reinforcement and the belief in one’s potential. She not only passed the course but excelled, proving that with the right guidance and support, even the most troubled students can shine.

5. What is a challenge of predicting the weather according to the text?
A. Climate change. B. People’s injury.
C. Poor technology. D. Lack of experience.
6. Which word can best describe Ruiz according to the last paragraph?
A. Creative. B. Clever. C. Hard-working. D. World-famous.
7. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear?
A. Sports. B. People. C. Education. D. Health.
C

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Emily was obviously shocked.
