If you’ve come to ski or snowboard, we’ll see you on the slopes. Skiing is a locals’ favourite too. While you’re here, try other recreational activities available in our mountains. Popular choices include a Banff Gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain, bathe in the natural mineral waters at the Upper Hot Spring, horse-drawn sleigh ride, drive-your-own-team dog sled excursion, and snowmobile tour to the highland (but not in the national park). We also recommend you make time to enjoy simple pleasures. After looking around Banff Ave shops, walk a couple of blocks west or south to the scenic Bow River. Try ice skating on frozen Lake Louise where Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition works are displayed after Jan 25. You can rent skates in Banff or at the sport shop in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel. Banff’s backcountry paths access a wilderness world of silence and matchless beauty — cross country skis and snowshoes provide the means. Banff sport shops rent equipment and clothes, or join an organised tour. Although we’ve been many times, we still find the cliffs and icefalls of our frozen canyons worth visiting. Wildlife watching also creates satisfying memories. We have seen hundreds of the elk and bighorn sheep that attract visitors, yet they still arouse a sense of wonder. And the rare spotting of a cougar, wolf or woodland caribou takes our breath away. See if simple pleasures work for you. Fight in the snow with your kids, walk beside a stream or climb to a high place and admire the view. — Banff Resort Guide Editors 1. According to the passage, Banff’s backcountry is accessible by . This huge park in the southeastern part of the state covers more than 10 thousand square kilometres of the Alaskan wilderness. It includes mountains, glaciers, fjords, and even rain forests. Glacier Bay supports hundreds of kinds of animals, including many species of birds, fish, bears, whales and sea lions. As its name suggests, much of Glacier Bay is covered by glaciers. A glacier is a large area of ice that moves slowly down a slope or valley, or over a wide area of land. Glaciers cover a vast area of the park. The glaciers found in the park today are what remain from an ice development known as the Little Ice Age. That period began about 4,000 years ago. During the Little Ice Age, the cold weather caused the ice to grow and develop. That growth continued until the 1700s, when the climate began to warm. The hotter temperatures caused the ice to start melting. That melting led the huge glacier to divide into more than 1,000 different glaciers. The extremely tall mountains seen in Glacier Bay were formed by the ice developing and then melting over time. The melting of the ice also created water that filled in and created the many fjords within the park. Fjords are narrow parts of the ocean that sit between cliffs or mountains. Glacier Bay is a popular and superb place for people searching for adventure. Some visitors choose to explore the park by kayak. The small, narrow boats offer visitors a chance to experience the park’s many fjords and its hundreds of kilometres of coastline. 4. What will you find if you pay a visit to Glacier Bay? A. It almost covers the whole Alaskan wilderness. B. The rain forests are rare in such conditions. C. There are more birds than other species. D. There live numerous kinds of animals. 5. What can we learn from the third paragraph? A. Some glaciers existed there long long ago. B. Greenhouse effect has affected the glaciers. C. The glaciers will disappear in the near future. D. Only 1,000 large glaciers are left at present. 6. What do you know about fjords mentioned in the passage? A. They are formed on the top of mountains. B. The melting of the ice is also called fjords. C. Water is the source of creating many fjords. D Fjords move as the oceans flow around. 7. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage? A. To warn visitors there are too many dangers. B. To show Glacier Bay has a long history. C. To introduce Glacier Bay to readers. D. To do a research about Glacier Bay. Then just last year the city put a chain link fence around the park and started bulldozing (用推土机推平) the trees and grass to make way for a new apartment complex. When I saw the fence and bulldozers, I asked myself, “Why don't they just leave it alone?” Looking back, I think what sentenced the park to oblivion (被遗忘) was the drought (旱灾) we had about four years ago. Up until then, Southway Park was a nice green park with plenty of trees and a public swimming pool. My friends and I rollerskated on the sidewalks, climbed the trees, and swam in the pool all the years I was growing up. The park was almost like my own yard. Then the summer I was fifteen the drought came and things changed. There had been almost no rain at all that year. The city stopped watering the park grass. Within a few weeks I found myself living across the street from a huge brown desert. Leaves fell off the park trees, and pretty soon the trees started dying, too. Next, the park swimming pool was closed. The city cut down on the work force that kept the park, and pretty soon it just got too ugly and dirty to enjoy anymore. As the drought lasted into the fall, the park got worse every month. The rubbish piled up or blew across the brown grass. Soon the only people in the park were beggars and other people down on their luck. People said drugs were being sold or traded there now. The park had gotten scary, and my mother told us kids not to go there anymore. The drought finally ended and things seemed to get back to normal, that is, everything but the park. It had gotten into such bad shape that the city just let it stay that way. Then about six months ago I heard that the city was going to “redevelop” certain worn-out areas of the city. It turned out that the city had planned to get rid of the park, sell the land and let someone build rows of apartment buildings on it. The chain-link fencing and the bulldozers did their work. Now we live across the street from six rows of apartment buildings. Each of them is three units high and stretches a block in each direction. The neighborhood has changed without the park. The streets I used to play in are jammed with cars now. Things will never be the same again. Sometimes I wonder, though, what changes another drought would make in the way things are today. 8. How did the writer feel when he saw the fence and bulldozers.'? A. Scared. B. Confused. C. Upset. D. Curious. 9. Why was the writer told not to go to the park by his mother? A. It was being rebuilt. B. It was dangerous. C. It became crowded. D. It had turned into a desert. 10. According to the writer, what eventually brought about the disappearance of the park? A. The drought. B. The crime. C. The beggars and the rubbish. D. The decisions of the city. 11. The last sentence of the passage implies that if another drought came, . A. the situation would be much worse B. people would have to desert their homes C. the city would be fully prepared in advance D. the city would have to redevelop the neighborhood Notes: 1. a chain link fence * oblivi on n 被遗忘 4. desert n沙漠 &v离弃 5. * pile up 堆积 6. robbery n抢劫 7. * get rid of 摆脱;除去 8. be jammed with 挤满;塞满 D As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find. If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild. Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for humans, but a new study shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely important for human well-being. The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码) experiences into different categories. For example, one participant’s experience of “We sat and listened to the waves at the beach for a while” was assigned the categories “sitting at beach” and “listening to waves.” Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge of water, and following an established trail. Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park. Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break. “We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn, a senior author of the study. 12. What phenomenon does the author describe at the beginning of the text? A. Pocket parks are now popular. B. Wild nature is hard to find in cities. C. Many cities are overpopulated. D. People enjoy living close to nature. 13. Why did the researchers code participant submissions into categories? A. To compare different types of park-goers. B. To explain why the park attracts tourists. C. To analyze the main features of the park. D. To find patterns in the visitors’ summaries. 14. What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 5? A. Walking is the best way to gain access to nature. B. Young people are too busy to interact with nature. C. The same nature experience takes different forms. D. The nature language enhances work performance. 15. What should be done before we can interact with nature according to Kahn? A. Language study. B. Environmental conservation. C. Public education. D. Intercultural communication. I admitted their courage, but refused to challenge myself. One day when we were at the Happy Amusement Park in Seattle, my friends tried to get me to ride a roller coaster. But the click, click, click of the cars climbing up the tracks made me scared. The stop at the top, before falling with people's screams, seemed terrible. My friends were still trying to persuade me, and I was saying no as usual, when I suddenly saw a familiar face, one I had never seen in real life. It was Raine, a popular young tennis star at the top of her game, who was my heroine. I pulled out a pen and the only paper that I could find and walked to her. She was making her way through a rope that led to a ride called the Loudest Scream. I was running fast because I didn't want to miss the chance to meet her face to face, but I was also a bit nervous. So I waited at the exit to calm down and get closer to her as she came off the ride. Several minutes later, she got out from the exit, laughing and talking with her brother. I focused on her walking toward me. She walked past. It was more difficult to talk to a star than I thought, but I had to take the chance. I called her name, not very confidently, but more like a question, “Raine?” She turned around. Our eyes actually met. “Would you mind signing for me?” I asked, handing the pen and paper toward her. Her hand wrote over the paper and she said, “You are the first person who has recognized me in the park so let's take a roller coaster together.” Paragraph 1: Her warm invitation actually filled me with mixed feelings ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: My friend came up and asked, “Are you sure you will take the Loudest Scream?” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1. D. Fjords move as the oceans flow around. 7. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage? A. To warn visitors there are too many dangers. B. To show Glacier Bay has a long history. C. To introduce Glacier Bay to readers. D. To do a research about Glacier Bay. 4. D 5. A 6. C 7. A. the situation would be much worse B. people would have to desert their homes C. the city would be fully prepared in advance D. the city would have to redevelop the neighborhood 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 13. D 14. C 15. 根据第一段内容“As cities balloon with growth, access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to find. If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.(随着城市的飞速发展,生活在城市地区的人们越来越难以接近大自然。如果你幸运的话,你住的地方附近可能会有一个袖珍公园,但在城市里找到相对天然的地方是罕见的)”可知,文章开头作者讲述了一种现象,在城市里,人们很难找到野生的自然。故选B。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段的“They surveyed several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码) experiences into different categories. (他们调查了数百名公园游客,要求他们在网上提交一份书面总结,描述他们在公园里与大自然有意义的互动。然后,研究人员检查了这些提交的信息,将体验分为不同的类别)”可知,研究人员按照公园游客提交的在公园里与大自然互动的活动把游客分类,再根据第四段“Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important to visitors. (在这320份提交的作品中,一种被研究人员称为“自然语言”的分类模式开始出现。在对所有提交的内容进行编码后,有六个类别被认为对游客最重要)”可知,研究人员对参与者提交的内容进行了分类,以便在游客的总结中找到模式,并确定对游客最重要的自然体验。通过这样做,他们能够创造一种“自然语言”,帮助人们认识并参与对他们来说最满意和最有意义的活动。选项D准确地反映了这一目的。故选D。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段内容“Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young professional on a weekend hike in the park. Back downtown during a workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by walking along a fountain on their lunch break. 根据最后一段““We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter Kahn, a senior author of the study. Visiting a theme park is a wonderful activity for a family during summer or other holidays. ____16____ If you’re on a budget (预算), don’t be worried because through patient planning and research, you can still enjoy your trip without breaking the bank. Her hand wrote over the paper and she said, “You are the first person who has recognized me in the park so let's take a roller coaster together.” Paragraph 1: Her warm invitation actually filled me with mixed feelings ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: My friend came up and asked, “Are you sure you will take the Loudest Scream?” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Her warm invitation actually filled me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I felt extremely excited that I was the only fan who got the priceless opportunity. I admired Raine very much and was eager to stay with her a little longer. On the other hand, I was scared of riding a roller coaster. The thought of having a try nearly pushed me to the verge of collapse. However, I must take the chance and it didn’t take much time to make my final decision. Mustering my courage, I nodded firmly and went to the roller coaster with her. My friend came up and asked, “Are you sure you will take the Loudest Scream?” “Yes,” I answered without hesitation. She was rather surprised, with her mouth open and eyes widened. After all, she had spent years trying to persuade me but in vain. Fears of heights and moving too fast seemed unimportant to me now. Although I screamed during the entire time like a girl being chased by a hungry wolf, spending a good time with my idol made all of it worthwhile and my fear was miraculously overcome. And since then, I have lived in a world where I am a bit braver. 词汇激活 行为类 ①抓住机会:take the chance / seize the opportunity ②做最后的决定:make my final decision / make up one’s mind finally ③克服:overcome / conquer 情绪类 ①兴奋的:excited / thrilled ②害怕的:scared / afraid / frightened ③惊讶的:surprised / amazed 【点睛】[高分句型1].
