He placed a large stone in the middle of the main road and hid gold coins under the stone. Then he hid behind a huge tree and watched. The first person down the street was a milkman with his car. He crashed into the stone and the milk spread all over the ground. “What fool put this stone here? “he shouted. He picked himself up and angrily went away. After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head. One woman tripped over (绊倒) the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and walked away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road. The king watched all day as many people complained about the stone, but he found nobody was willing to move it. The king wondered, “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors from harm?” Just then, the king saw a young girl coming along. She was the daughter of a local farmer. She had been working all day and was very tired. But when she saw the stone, she said to herself. “This stone is a danger to anyone who comes down the road after dark. I’ll move it out of the way.”After a great deal of effort, the girl finally succeeded in moving the stone to the side of the road. Imagine her surprise when she saw the gold coins where the stone had been! Just then, the king stepped out from behind the tree. “Oh sir,” the girl said, “Is this gold yours? If not, we surely must find the owner, for he will certainly miss it.” The king said, “My dear, the gold is mine, but now the gold is yours, because you are the only person who has learnt the lesson I want to teach my people. Nothing good can come to a nation whose people only complain and expect others to solve their problems.” ( )1. How did the milkman feel when he crashed into the stone? A. Angry. B. Sad. C. Curious. D. Worried. ( )2. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “responsibility” in Paragraph (段落) 4? A. 欲望 B. 兴趣 C. 责任 D. 能力 ( )3. Why did the king place a stone on the road? A. He wanted to give the girl a reward. B. He wanted to hide gold coins under it C. He wanted to play a trick on his people. D. He wanted to see if anyone would move it. ( )4. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. All the people complained about the stone. B. It was not easy for the girl to move the stone. C. One of the women in the group tried to move the stone. D. The girl was excited when seeing the gold coins under the stone. ( )5. What’s the best title (标题) of the passage? A. A wise king B. A kind girl C. A stone on the road D. Gold coins under the stone ★五、根据文章回答问题 (no more than 6 words ) In the Renaissance Period (文艺复兴时期) (1500-1650), people became interested in higher education. They wanted to learn the ancient languages such as Greek and Latin- languages that were used in the old times, and study mathematics, science, and so on. Many universities were set up during the 16th century. University education was a privilege (特权) of the rich. Girls were not allowed to attend and poor people could not afford to go. A member of a wealthy family could attend university at the age of ten. He might study in different universities and since the teaching was all done in Latin, it didn’t matter which country he studied in. It was not unusual for a young boy study one year in Italy and another in France without speaking either French or Italian. It was possible in the 16th century to complete university without learning how to read or write. Since books were handwritten, there was not enough to give one to each student. Often, only the teacher had a book. He would read to the students who would memorize what he said. Tests were oral, not written, In fact, many students finished school without ever writing a word. For the not so wealthy, grammar schools were built in towns. They learned basic grammar and mathematics, and took part in Bible study. At home, girls learned washing, cooking, dancing, and how to take care of their family. Poor children rarely attended school. The Renaissance was a time when learners did not simply accept what they were old. They did scientific experiments themselves to search for answers to the mysteries of the space. Copernicus calculated that the earth turned around the sun but was afraid to publish his works for fear that the Church would punish him. Galileo later supported this. The watch, the telescope and some others were some inventions of this period. 1.What did people become interested in during the Renaissance Period?_____________________ 2.Who could be allowed to attend university at the age of ten? ___________________________ 3.Why was there not enough books to each student in the 16th century?______________________ 4.What schools were built in towns for the not so wealthy ? __________________________ 5.Who later supported the opinion that the earth turned around the sun?______________________ 一、根据所给的提示写单词 1. “outsiders”:“many”后接名词复数,“外来者”用“outsider”,复数形式是“outsiders”。 2. “discussion”:“a long”后接名词,“讨论”的名词形式是“discussion”。 3. “disadvantages”:“one of”后接名词复数,“劣势”是“disadvantage”,复数形式是“disadvantages”。 4. “uncomfortable”:系动词“be”后接形容词,“不舒服的”是“uncomfortable”。 5. “electronic”:“电子的”是“electronic”,形容词修饰名词“dollars”。 6. “agreement”:“an”后接名词,“agree”的名词形式是“agreement”。 7. “taking”:“risk doing sth.”表示“冒险做某事”,所以用“taking”。 8. “possibility”:“the”后接名词,“possible”的名词形式是“possibility”。 9. “living”:“guide to doing sth.”表示“......的指南”,“live”的动名词形式是“living”。 10. “rapidly”:修饰动词“increasing”要用副词,“rapid”的副词形式是“rapidly”。 二、单项选择 1.
