As she told her recent experiment and its results, the response was dead silence for two minutes, then a thunderous applause continued for ten minutes. The woman was Chien-Shiung Wu, known as the First Lady of Physics, who transformed nuclear science through her work on the Manhattan Project and other groundbreaking experiments. Born in 1912, Wu was unlike many Chinese women of her time, and received a formal education. Fascinated by new discoveries and the story of women scientists, she entered the university to study physics and began scientific studies. It was a time of rapid change in both the field of physics and China. Domestic unrest and a bad relationship with Japan made life at home uneasy. With the help of an uncle, she immigrated to the United States for graduate school. Wu planned to go to the University of Michigan, but a tour of the University of California, Berkeley — and word that a student center at Michigan did not allow female students to enter through the front door — changed her mind. At Berkeley Wu was visible for her gender and race, her male colleagues commenting as much on her appearance as her keen mind. She quickly gained a reputation and became an expert in the newly discovered phenomenon of nuclear fission (核裂变). After graduation, she headed to Smith College to teach women physics. During World War Two Wu went to Princeton University, where she became the physics departments first female instructor. But shortly after her arrival, her career took an unexpected turn in 1944. She ended up joining the staff at Columbia University on a top-secret research program now known as the Manhattan Project. 4. Which word best describes the lecture in Paragraph 1? A. Boring. B. Humorous. C. Excellent. D. Common. 5. What inspired Wu to study physics? A. The formal education she received. B. The success of women scientists. C. The background of her family. D. The rapid change in the field of physics. 6. What happened to Wu in America? A. She was looked down on at Berkeley. B. She went to the University of Michigan at first. C. She taught women physics at Princeton University. D. She joined a top-secret research program at Columbia University. 7. Which of the following best describes Wu as a scientist? A. Modest and independent. B. Creative and warm-hearted. C Responsible and cautious. D. Committed and ambitious. C New glove can translate sign language instantly through an app, researchers say California researchers developed a glove embedded with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone. Unlike its past counterparts, the new glove is lightweight, inexpensive and long-lasting. The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them. The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device, simultaneously teaching a machine how to recognize them. The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone. The system was able to recognize 660 hand motions and finger placements that stand for each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algorithm (计算程序) recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second — or about a tone word per second. The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “capture facial expressions that are a part of ASL”. The same exact hand-shape and movement can totally change meaning because of the facial expression that is used to accompany it. Take the word MUCH. The degree of how much can totally be determined by the facial expression alone while the sign stays the same. Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores. 8. Who is the new glove intended for? A. Translators. B. Deaf people. C. English learners. D. Sign language users. 9. What does Paragraph 4 mainly say about the new glove? A. Its reliability. B. Its components. C. Its working principle. D. Its broad applications. 10. How do researchers improve the glove’s correctness of recognition? A. By connecting it to smartphones. B. By lengthening the time of catching gestures. C. By inputting more letters and words in English. D. By catching information from participants’ faces. 11. What will researchers do with the glove in the future? A. Bring it to market. B. Update its outlook. C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance. D Banff National Park is Canada’s firstborn national park and was recognized in 1885. Located in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Banff includes 6,641 square kilometers of glaciers and ice fields, thick coniferous forest, and alpine(高山的) scenery. The Icefields Park-way spreads from Lake Louise, connecting to Jasper National Park in the north. Provincial forests and Yoho National Park are neighbors to the west while Kootenay National Park is situated to the south. The main commercial center of the park is the town of Banff, in the Bow River valley. The Canadian Pacific Railway was contributory in Banff’s early years, building the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise hotel in the park and attracting tourists through widespread advertising. In the early 20th century, roads were built in Banff, at times by prisoners of World War I, and through Great Depression-era public works projects, As Banff has over three million visitors annually, the health of its ecology has been endangered. In the mid-1990s, Parks Canada launched a two-year study to preserve ecological integrity. Banff National Park has a subarctic climate(副极地气候) with three ecoregions. The forests feature lodgepole pine at lower heights and Engelmann spruce at higher ones below the tree line, above which are chiefly rocks and ice. Mammal(哺乳动物) species such as the grizzly bear, cougar, wolverine, moose and bighorn sheep are found along with hundreds of bird species. Reptiles(爬行动物) are also found but only a restricted number of species have been recorded. The mountains were formed from sedimentary rocks(沉积岩) which were pushed east over newer rock formations, between 80 and 55 million years ago. Over the previous few million years, glaciers have at times covered most of the park, but today are found only on the mountainsides though they include the Columbia Icefield, the largest continuous glacial mass in the Rockies. Erosion(侵蚀) from water and ice has molded the mountains into their existing shapes. 12. What can we infer about Banff National Park? A. It was built mainly by prisoners. B. It is the oldest national park in Canada. C. It is connected to three other provincial parks. D. It failed to satisfy visitors’ demand for commercial activities. 13. What was a contribution of the Canadian Pacific Railway? A. Building roads in Banff. B. Constructing hotels in Banff. C. Preserving the ecology of Banff. D. Providing multiple railway lines to Banff. 14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The biodiversity of Banff. B. The limited knowledge of reptiles. C. The complex climate system of Banff. D. The mammals’ severe living conditions. 15. What does the underlined word “molded” most probably mean? A. Stuck. B. Broken. C. Formed. D. Followed. Being a first-year international student at a U. As she tiptoed (踮着脚走) to tie a balloon, hunger was evident in her eyes. How did her family do this every year? It was so hard to go without food or drink from lunch until sunset. She found this period especially challenging, because today also turned out to be her grandfather Babajoon’s birthday. Suddenly the phone rang. Shireen answered to find her friend Amy on the other end, inviting her to the park. “Can I join Amy and Maya? They want to show me their new toys,” Shireen begged her mom. Understanding the struggle of Shireen, her mother gently replied, “Sorry, sweetie. You’ll get tired and thirsty running around in the sun, especially on an empty stomach.” Disappointed, Shireen felt angry, thinking of her friends enjoying themselves. The burst of hunger and anger made Shireen question the significance of giving up meals of the period. Realizing Shireen’s upset, her mom explained that the most important thing was to know how it felt to be hungry, allowing them to understand those less lucky people’s feeling and experiences and developed compassion (同情). To cheer Shireen up, her mom suggested baking a birthday cake for her grandfather. Her dad was passing by and heard their conversation. He considered it a bad idea, fearing that it would be too hard for Shireen on an empty stomach. However, Shireen had made her mind. She wanted to surprise Babajoon with a cake, not just any cake, but a beautiful chocolate one. Shireen and her mom set out the materials: cocoa powder, sugar, flour (面粉),eggs and butter. Her mom selected the cocoa and flour. Shireen measured sugar into the mixer and added the butter. She liked watching the mixer turn the separate materials into a soft yellow paste. She cracked the eggs one by one into the bowl. “Oops! There’s some shell.” Shireen tried getting it out with a spoon. The process of making the cake brought moments of joy. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally evening approached. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力 1—5 AABCA 6—10 CABCB 11—15 CABCB 16—20 ABCAB 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 南昌十中2024—2025学年上学期第一次月考 高二英语试题 说明:本试卷分第I卷(选择题)和第II卷(非选择题)两部分,全卷满分150分。 1. Wu planned to go to the University of Michigan but a tour of the University of California, Berkeley — and word that a student center at Michigan did not allow female students to enter through the front door — changed her mind. C. Responsible and cautious. D. Committed and ambitious. 4. C 5. B 6. D 7. 11 What will researchers do with the glove in the future? A. Bring it to market. B. Update its outlook. C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance. D 9. C 10. D 11. 根据文章第二段“The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them.(该设备有助于消除手语使用者和非手语使用者之间的沟通障碍。有望为使用手语的人提供一种简便的方式,使他们能够直接与不会手语的人沟通,而无需他人翻译)”可知,这款手套是为了帮助使用手语的人与非手语使用者沟通。故选D。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第四段“The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” that run up each finger and convert the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone.(手套上装有由“导电纱线”制成的薄而可拉伸的传感器,这些传感器沿每根手指延伸,并将动作转换为信号。这些信号被发送到佩戴者手腕上放置的一块“硬币大小”的电路板上,然后电路板通过无线方式将其传输到智能手机上)”可知,第四段详细描述了新手套的工作原理,即手套上的传感器将动作转换为信号,然后信号被发送到电路板,再通过无线方式传输到智能手机上。故选C。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第六段“The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “capture facial expressions that are a part of ASL”.(研究人员还在参与者的眉毛之间和嘴巴两侧放置了传感器,以“捕捉作为美国手语一部分的面部表情”)”可知,研究人员在参与者的眉毛之间和嘴巴两侧放置了传感器来捕捉作为美国手语一部分的面部表情。 根据文章最后一段“Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores.(研究人员表示,为了让这款手套实现商业化并在商店出售,它需要学习更多的词汇,并能够更快地翻译手语)”可知,研究人员还有很多工作要做,以使手套具有商业价值。 D。 D Banff National Park is Canada’s firstborn national park and was recognized in 1885. A. Stuck. B. Broken. C. Formed. D. Followed. 12. B 13. B 14. A 15. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: The process of making the cake brought moments of joy. As the cake began to take shape, Shireen almost forgot about her hunger. She and her mom laughed heartily when shireen got some flour on her nose, and her mom taught her the technique to perfect the cake. With every added decoration, the cake became more beautiful. They also discussed how Babajoon would react, and the excitement of the evening’s celebration lightened Shireen’s earlier feelings of sadness and tiredness. Finally evening approached. The setting sun marked the end of the day’s no food policy. As the family sat around the dining table, Babajoon was presented with Shireen’s beautiful cake. The joy and pride in Shireen’s eyes were obvious. Not only had she successfully overcame the challenge, but she also managed to make a beautiful gift from the heart for her beloved grandfather. The day taught her the value of compassion, patience and the importance of family ties. 词汇激活 行为类 开始成形:begin to take shape/start to shape up 讨论:discuss/talk over 成功做某事:manage to do sth./be succeeded in doing sth. 情绪类 开怀大笑:laugh heartily/roar with laughter 高兴:joy/delight 【点睛】 [高分句型1] They also discussed how Babajoon would react, and the excitement of the evening’s celebration lightened Shireen’s earlier feelings of sadness and tiredness.(运用了how引导宾语从句) [高分句型2] Not only had she successfully overcame the challenge, but she also managed to make a beautiful gift from the heart for her beloved grandfather.(运用了部分倒装) 听力 1—5 AABCA 6—10 CABCB 11—15 CABCB 16—20 ABCAB 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
