Artificial intelligence (AI) can now do amazing things. ChatGPT is an AI that can answer questions, tell stories, and do much more. But it’s very “thirsty”, said a new study.
When ChatGPT works, its “home”—data (数据) centers around the world—gets very hot. Workers then have to use water to cool them down. Cold water goes into pipes near the computers at these centers. Because the computers are very hot, the water turns into vapor (水蒸气) and goes into the air. The water needs to be super clean. If they use seawater, it can eat away the pipes.
If you ask ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions, it needs to “drink” a 500-milliliter bottle of water. When people trained ChatGPT, it used 700,000 liters of water, said the study. This is the amount that is needed to make about 370 cars.
ChatGPT is not the only one that needs data centers. Everything you do with computers needs data centers to work. There are more than 8,000 data centers in the world. The number is still growing. If AI keeps using a lot of water, we may have to “fight” with Al for water.
AI uses a lot of water to “grow”. Many people may not have enough water to drink because of water shortage. However, we need better AI to have better future. Should we rethink the use of AI?
29. What is the meaning of “thirsty”in this article?
A. ChatGPT can answer many questions at the same time.
B. ChatGPT needs some water while working.
C. ChatGPT keeps learning to answer many questions.
D. ChatGPT works just like drinking water.
30. Why can’t people use seawater to cool down data centers?
A. Because seawater is too clean to cool down the centers
B. Because it is hard for seawater to become vapor.
C. Because seawater is bad for the pipes.
D. Because animals in seawater may eat the pipes.
31. How does the writer show the idea in Paragraph 3?
a. By comparing one thing with another.
b. By thinking of a thing as a person.
c. By deducing (推断) from the information.
d. By giving examples to make the point clear.
A. abc B. abd C. acd D. bcd
32. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. There may be a competition (竞争) for water use between AI and humans.
B. AI may fight against (斗争) humans to get more water in the future.
C. AI will use less water some day to let people have enough.
D. People should stop using the data centers in order to save water.

Having to worry about our IQ is bad enough, and now there’s something called an “EQ”! Do we have to worry about that, too?
The answer is yes and no. Your EQ stands for “emotional quotient”. It’s a measure (测量) of how well you understand your own feelings and those of other people. People with high EQs know their emotions (情绪) and those of others. They control their own emotions well.
For serious life problems like school and work, people may not think of emotions. However, we are finding that, in fact, having a good understanding of emotions is important in any group. Employers are always looking for employees (雇员) with good people skills, right? Your EQ is just that: your people skills. People with high EQs become good leaders and helpful managers who understand how to deal with stressed (焦虑的) employees. They understand how to use people’s feelings to reach their goals—whether to create trust within a team or create passion for a project. Outside of work, understanding your partner’s emotions can certainly help you create a healthy relationship.
There are many ways to measure your EQ. Most ask you to perform different emotional problem-solving tasks. Testing your EQ is a useful way to find out how well you read emotions. If you think your EQ might be low, there are ways to improve (改进) it. First, get in touch with your emotions. Think about how they change your actions. When you feel your emotions leading you to a bad action, see if you can stop it. Then, focus on other people. See if you can understand their emotions and emotional reasons for their actions. In this way, you will build patience and a strong EQ.
33. What will NOT a high EQ help you with?
A. Knowing others’ emotions. B. Controlling others’ bad feelings.
C. Helping with others’ emotions. D. Creating a healthy relationship.
34. What can you learn from Paragraph 3?
A. People with high EQs help a lot in the work.
B. People don’t need to use emotions a lot in the work.
C. People with high EQs want to become leaders.
D. People with high EQs are smarter than others.
35. What does “get in touch with” mean in the last paragraph?
A. To catch up with. B. To get out of.
C. To stay away from. D. To think about and understand.
36. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A. The importance of a high EQ. B. The ways of improving EQ.
C. How to test your own EQ. D. How to measure and improve EQ.

Eldridge was a small, quiet town circled by rolling hills and thick forests. The people were friendly and life went by peacefully and slowly. Everyone knew each other by name, and secrets were hard to keep.
In the center of Eldridge stood an old library, a treasured (珍贵的) landmark (地标). The library’s high windows were cloudy with age, and the wooden shelves held books that smelled of old paper and ink.
