Hi, I’m Nancy. On September 9, 2010, I was told that I had a new baby sister. I had a selfish thought at that moment—Mom and Dad are going to be with the baby all the time and buy her all kinds of toys. I will get half as much love from them as before.
A few days later doctors told my parents that my sister had hearing problems.
We made several trips to a famous hearing center, but the treatments didn’t work, so my family began learning sign language. Actually, here my family only refer to my parents and sister, not me. My parents spent hours with my sister teaching her and themselves by playing sign language games. But I didn’t want to learn with them. I did my own things every day.
Years passed. The summer before the ninth grade, as my parents had to work, it was up to me to take care of my sister. This meant sending her to summer school in the morning, playing with her after finishing our homework and cooking delicious food for her.
One day my mother asked me to sign something, and I failed. My mom was sad about it. This hit me hard and I came to realize how selfish I was. I needed to talk to my sister. But I couldn’t even sign the easiest sentences like “Where are you going?” or “What do you want to eat?”
It was at that time that I started to go to sign language classes with my family. We sat down watching sign language movies and playing sign language games.
Today I can communicate well with my sister. It brings a smile to my face when my sister signs something to me about my friends, and they can’t understand. I realized it was no fun not knowing what my family was saying.
So, if you have a family member with special needs, don’t leave her or him alone. This person should be the first thing on your mind. For me, signing now comes before school, friends and sports, because it is the language of my family!

Some people are very careful about everything they do. On the other hand, some people, especially teens, do things without thinking too much about the results. Why is this?
Anna, a psychologist uses computer games to find out why some people are more likely to take risks. In one game, players are asked to click (点击) on a balloon on a computer screen. Every time they click, the balloon gets bigger. The bigger the balloon is, the larger the prize will be. But if the balloon gets too big, it’ll be broken and the player will get nothing.
Anna found that when teens played this game, a part of their brain called the striatum (纹状体) would become more active. It makes teens want to win. Another part of the brain, the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质), helps them control their decision-making process.
It turns out that young people have more striatums and less prefrontal cortexes, which affects their ability to make careful decisions. You might have already guessed that teens break more balloons during the game than adults—mainly because they like to take risks more and don’t take the time to think carefully.
“The teen brain is like a car with a very strong engine,” Anna said. “Its brakes (刹车) just don’t work as well.”
12. It’s more possible for ________ to do things without thinking too much about the result.
A. an 80-year-old man B. an 45-year-old woman C. a 15-year-old student D. a 6-year-old boy

15. What can we know from the article?
A. In the game, the teenagers probably get the most prizes.
B. Anna does the test by asking people to create a computer game.

D. If a person is careful about making decisions, he may have less striatums.

The human spine doesn’t just help us stand up straight. Inside the spine is the spinal cord (脊髓) ____16____ The legs and feet send “sense” information to the brain, saying they’re hurt or hot, for example. And the brain sends messages to the lower body, telling the legs to walk, dance or sit down.
When someone’s spinal cord is hurt, information about senses doesn’t reach the brain from the lower body. And control messages can’t make it to the lower body from the brain. ____17____
Surprisingly, now scientists in Switzerland have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again. All of the three men had damaged their spinal cords in motorcycle accidents and couldn’t move their legs. To help them walk again, a special device (装置) was put directly on the lower part of their spinal cord.
The scientists controlled the device from a computer. ____18____ In the past, scientists have had some successes with the similar device in the lower spine. Some patients have even trained themselves over months to be able to walk.
But this research is different. ____19____ Instead, the computer tells the device to send “walking” messages. The scientists use computers to create patterns of movement—like taking a step—that work well with each patient. The patients then choose the pattern they want, and the muscles (肌肉) move in the chosen way.
Over time, the three men are able to walk on their own, using a special walker with buttons to trigger (激发) each leg. ____20____ The scientists are hopeful that in the future, this technology will allow more paralyzed people to walk again.
A. When that happens, a person is paralyzed (瘫痪的).
B The patients’ brains aren’t sending “walking” messages to their legs.
C. The solution isn’t perfect and the patients can’t walk without the system.
D. One of them has walked for half a kilometer on his own with the walker.
E. It carries important information between the head and the lower part of the body.
F. Just hours after the device was first used, all the three men were taking steps, with support.
