The Origins of Famous Brands
Every day in our live we use lots of trademarked products with brand names. Although many brand names are simple acronyms(首字母缩略词)or come from their founders, some of the companies we are in favour of actually have fascinating and surprising back stories.
Starbucks
It seems fitting that the most famous coffee brand in the world would take its name from one of the world’s greatest works of literature. The inspiration for the name of the coffeehouse came from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. The founders’ original idea was to name the company after the Captain Ahab’s ship—Pequot, but they eventually decided that Pequot wasn’t a great name for coffee, so they chose Ahab’s first mate, Starbucks, as the name instead.
Google
Google was originally called BackRub, for it searched for links in every corner of the Web. In 1997, when the founders of the company were searching for a new name showing a huge amount of data for their rapidly improving search technology, a friend suggested the word “googol”. When a friend tried to register the new domain(域)name, he misspelled “googol” as “google”.
Nike
Originally founded as a distributor for Japanese running shoes, the company was originally named BRS, or Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1971, BRS introduced its own soccer shoe, a model called Nike, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of victory. In 1978, the company officially renamed itself as Nike, Inc.
The right name is essential to a company’s success, and a great origin story is just as significant as a great product. An attractive origin story is one more thing that keeps customers guessing, wondering, and buying its products.
11. Which book inspired the name of the coffeehouse?
A. Herman Melville B. Starbucks.
C. Herman Melville’s Moby Dick D. Pequot.
12. Why did the founders of the Google want to change its name?
A. The company’s search technology was improving rapidly.
B. They wanted new customers.
C. The company’s original name was too long.
D. They mistook their name.
13. Why is the right name essential to a company’s success?
A. It can change the company’s image.
B. It makes customers imagine and purchase its goods.
C. It explains the development of the company to customers.
D. It can add myth to the company.

Jacky Hunt-Broers ma, who lost one leg to cancer, is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon runs. She set her goal in mid-January. And since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon. Most of the time, she averages just over five hours to complete a run. If she keeps successfully completing marathon runs every day, she will reach her goal by April 28.
Until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. Currently, she runs on an artificial leg made of a strong, light material known as carbon fiber. The material, which is designed specially for running, costs about $10, 000.
But Jacky says her investment has been well worth it. The biggest struggle used to be that she had to admit part of her body was gone. “Running really changed my life,” she said. “It helped me accept myself as an amputee (截肢者). It gave me a sense of freedom. I fell in love with the process of pushing my body further just to see what I could do.”
However, she has faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, Jacky said she felt like giving up at 24 kilometers and began to cry. “I had a total emotional breakdown. I was like, ‘I just can’t do this.’” she said.
Jacky is documenting her progress online and has also gained a large social media following. As she nears the end of her goal, Jacky is hoping to inspire a single thought in others. She tells people, “You’re stronger than you think and you’re able to do so much more.”
14. What is Jacky’s goal according to paragraph 1?
A. To defeat a deadly disease. B. To break her 5-hour record.
C. To be a professional runner. D. To finish 102 marathon runs.
15. What may Jacky think of her running?
A. Difficult but rewarding. B. Interesting but challenging.
C. Enjoyable and eye-opening. D. Stressful and time-consuming.
16. Why does Jacky record her running online?
A. To prove her ability. B. To encourage others.
C. To gain wider attention. D. To increase her confidence.
17. Which of the following best describes Jacky’s experience?
A. Health is the key to happiness.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Chance favours the prepared mind.
D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

How would you go without your smartphone? For many of us our smartphone is the first and last thing we look at every day. We depend on it to perform a number of tasks and connect with our friends and family. But have we become addicted to our phones?
Certainly, the inventor of the first mobile phone. American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested people quit scrolling (刷屏) and “get a life”. But of course, once we start scrolling or watching videos, we just can’t kick the habit. Psychologist Jean Twenge says we feel regret for “checking our phone again and again if we’re waiting for a text or getting really into social media then kind of, looking up and realising that an hour has passed.”
But does it matter if we make the most of this technology? Possibly, because like medicine, the problem appears when it is withdrawn. A study from King’s College London found young people couldn’t control the amount of time they spend on their phone. Such behaviour means that people become “anxious” or “upset” if they are not allowed to be on the phone continuously, which can cause anxiety and mental health problems.
Interestingly, another study by the London School of Economics Science suggests we don’t just look at our phones when we receive text or email messages. The people they studied felt an automatical (自动的) need to check their phone, just as a smoker would light a cigarette.
One solution could be an app that rewards (奖励) students for time spent away from their phones. Another choice is changing your smartphone to a dumbphone that has none of the things that turn your attention away. But mainly, perhaps, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!
18. What is Martin Cooper’s attitude to focusing on smartphones?
A. Uncaring.
B. Doubtful.
C Unclear.
D. Unacceptable.
19. What does the underlined word “withdrawn” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Stopped.
B. Increased.
C. Offered.
D. Saved.
20. What is the author’s key suggestion in the last paragraph?
A. Concentrate on studies.
B. Get a reward for offline time.
C. Buy a new smartphone.
D. Contact with the real world.
21. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Benefits from Smartphones
B. Addiction to Smartphones
C. Development of Smartphones
D Disadvantages of Smartphones
D
“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medical joumal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection (感染). Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be due to a small decrease in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of humor on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality (性格) and may influence the way people cope with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when feeing challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to cope with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”
22. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Humor could benefit people’s health.
B. Joyflil women can live longer than happy men.
C Women who seldom laugh may fall ill easily.
D. Humor makes people pay more attention to their health.
23. The reason for men having a higher risk of death from infection than women is that ________.
A men have poor memories as they age
B. men become less humorous as they grow older
C. men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older
D. men take part in fewer social activities as they age
24. How does the author show the research findings?
A. By listing data.
B. By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments.
D. By making experiments.
25. Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with?
A. Humoriess people have an unhappy childhood.
B. Children must learn to be humorous at an early age.
C. Humorous people can better deal with pressure in life.
D. Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education.

Pequot.

How would you go without your smartphone? For many of us, our smartphone is the first and last thing we look at every day. We depend on it to perform a number of tasks and connect with our friends and family. But have we become addicted to our phones?
Certainly the inventor of the first mobile phone.
A. Uncaring.
B. Doubtful.
C. Unclear.
D. Unacceptable.
19. What does the underlined word “withdrawn” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Stopped.
B. Increased.
C. Offered.
D. Saved.
20. What is the author’s key suggestion in the last paragraph?
A. Concentrate on studies.
B. Get a reward for offline time.
C. Buy a new smartphone.
D. Contact with the real world.
21. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Benefits from Smartphones
B. Addiction to Smartphones
C. Development of Smartphones
D. Disadvantages of Smartphones
【答案】18. D 19. A 20. D 21. B

C. Women who seldom laugh may fall ill easily.
D. Humor makes people pay more attention to their health.

A. men have poor memories as they age
B. men become less humorous as they grow older
C. men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older
D. men take part in fewer social activities as they age
