Students in a school in Japan will get a punishment (惩罚) if he cannot finish the meal. What’s more, students must not talk at lunch. If a student is found talking to someone, he has to sit alone on a chair with no table.
Teachers in parts of the UK and Australia are told not to grade their student’s homework using red pens. What is wrong with red pens? Manson: The uniform has to be earned (获得) through efforts. Students should start school with no uniforms. As they make progress at school, they start wearing it. I always think children need to be proud of their school. The uniform is important for that. So, make students earn it! If they don’t perform well, they should not be allowed to get one.
Moorhead: In my opinion, kids don’t have to wear uniforms. There should be more choices open to kids in education. They ought to (应该) develop their own independence and just be themselves. Their personalities (个性) would be expressed through their own clothes at school. And different dress could be one way of showing their understanding of beauty. Besides, they make the school lively and colorful.

Now I’m studying in the US, and I find there are some differences between schools in the US and in Vietnam.
One big difference is the clothes students wear at school and how they look. In my country, all the students should wear uniforms when they go to school. Boys aren’t allowed to have long hair. Girls aren’t allowed to have long or colored nails.
Another difference is about the rules for parents. In Vietnam, when we begin a new year, our parents have to go to a meeting in our class. If they don’t go to that meeting, their children won’t have a grade or a report card from school.
However, in the US, there aren’t such strict rules above.
In Vietnam, a class is only 45 minutes and we have only five classes each weekday. When the bell rings, all the students just sit in their classroom. They can’t move to a different room, but students can in the US.
In Vietnam, students can’t go to work because they can’t find a job if they’re under 18. But in the US, many students work after school. This helps them make money. More importantly, this helps them become more independent. They’re able to do things by themselves in their own way, without asking other people for help.
15.Which country is the writer’s hometown?
A.America. B.The UK. C.Vietnam. D.China
16.What are the girl students allowed to do in the writer’s country?
A.To have long nails. B.To color their nails.
C.To grow their hair long. D.Not to wear uniforms in school
17.What does the underlined word “independent” mean in Chinese?
A.勇敢的 B.独立的 C.依赖的 D.坚强的
18.Which is TRUE about the Vietnamese students according to the passage?
A.They have twenty-five classes a week.
B.They can design their school uniforms.
C.They don’t get a report card from school.
D.They have five classes in the weekend.
19.From the passage, we can learn that ________.
A.in Vietnam, the students must sit quietly and can’t move around in class
B.the US students don’t have such strict rules as the Vietnamese students
C.at the end of a school year, parents in Vietnam have to go to a parents’ meeting
D.the US students have the same strict rules as the Vietnamese students

20 Try to learn to get used to it. Many people won’t understand the real meaning of this rule until they’ve failed to find fairness again and again.
The world won’t care about your feelings
The world will expect you to succeed in doing something before you feel good about yourself. 21 It will expect you to learn to understand the real world after you leave school. Then you’ll be sure of what to do with the real world.

If you think your teacher is terrible, wait until you get a boss. Your boss won’t ask you how you feel about your work and will never give you more care or help. 22

Students must follow rules in schools. But some schools have unusual school rules and you may get a surprise when hearing about them.
In a school in the USA, students cannot wear some winter clothes like jackets or hats in class because they are “criminal symbols.” But the town is freezing even indoors in winter and the students don’t understand why they cannot wear warm clothes to school.
An American college has many dorm (宿舍) rules. One of them is that students must make their bed before 9 a. m. every day. One student said if he wanted to continue to sleep on Saturday morning, he must get up, make his bed, and then go back to sleep on top of the quilt.
Recently, a junior high school sent several students back home because they broke the school uniform rules. Should students wear school uniforms? The Young World magazine held a discussion on this topic.
Kennedy: The school uniform is very important, because it always reminds me that I am supposed to go out of my way to study hard. It also helps prevent school bullying (欺凌). If everyone wears the same clothes, it is impossible to laugh at other people’s clothing.
Patrick: I can see the advantages of wearing school uniforms. They play a very important role in managing schools. However, a school should not depend heavily on uniforms to improve students’ behaviors. Teaching them how to express themselves with confidence (信心) is more important.
