The house is a smart house with a library. There are hundreds of books in it! And I need a big 3D TV in the living room. How cool it is to watch my favorite movies on it! It is not too cold or too hot in the rooms. When I walk into a room, the lights are turned on. The house can keep itself (它自己) clean.
The house is a green house. There is a garden behind it. Many flowers are in it. And there is also a small lake in the garden. At weekends, I can watch the fish swimming around or fish by the lake.
The house is far from a city. But there is a mini airport (微型机场) in it, so I can fly to cities in my mini plane if I want to go shopping or do some other things. Does the house sound cool? Maybe in 20 years, my dream will come true.

Last week we went on a school trip to a science museum. Ms. Liu, the guide, showed us around a smart home.
We started with the front door. Ms. Liu asked me to ring the doorbell. I didn’t notice the tiny camera that was fixed just above it. After I pressed (按) the doorbell, the camera sent a live video (视频直播) to the home-owners. “They can electronically open the door when they are not at home,” said Ms. Liu.
The other thing I couldn’t see on the door was a lock. “There must be one,” I thought. At this time, Ms. Liu took out a smart phone and put it against the door. And it opened. “Oh, the key is on the smart phone.”
After entering the living room, I saw a computer on a table. By using the computer, the owners can control how much energy is used. In this way, they can manage their living cost.
One of the rooms I wanted to see most was the bedroom. To my great surprise, the bed disappeared into the floor at the touch of the smart phone. The window has a smart blind (百叶窗). It can be raised and lowered with a voice.
As I left the smart home, I looked back on what I had just seen. Scientists often say that these products are improving our life. I think the technology in the smart home may make us lazier. However, there is no doubt that it will become more popular in the homes of tomorrow.

Most of us spend all day at school or work. After a long and busy day, all we want to do is to return to a comfortable home. Smart technology can turn any home into a nicer place to live in.
Smart homes have been around for some time. Scottish company Pico Electronics invented a type of technology called X10 in 1975. It allows household devices (设备), such as lights and alarms, to communicate with each other by using radio waves.
Of course, 5G network connectivity has made smart homes more convenient. Perhaps the most widespread smart home technology is the voice-activated assistant(语音激活助手). Google Home allows users to control nearly any device in their home simply by speaking a few words. This is especially convenient for people with physical disabilities, as they can finish tasks without using their hands or walking around the house.
Common household devices can become “smart” as well. For example, a smart rubbish bin can memorize all the things you’ve thrown away and offer you a shopping list online, while a smart fridge can create dinner recipes (菜谱)according to the vegetables that are being kept inside.
But it’s not just about convenience. Smart homes are also good for the environment. By regularly checking your energy use and turning off lights and other devices that you’re not using, smart homes can lower how much electricity you use overall. Using less energy means that we make less pollution. That is good for the environment.

任务型阅读:阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,完成下列各题。
When you’re not at home, many worries may start to appear in your mind. Did I turn the coffee maker off? Did I lock the door? Are the kids doing their homework or watching television?
With a smart home, you won’t have these worries any more.
A smart home is a home with a communication network. This network connects devices(装置), such as lights and TV sets, and allows them to be controlled from far away through electrical wiring.
More and more people may start to consider owning a smart home because it makes life much more convenient. It can help keep your room at a certain temperature. It can record what happens inside the home and send the video to your phone. When you are on vacation abroad, you can use a smart home controller to turn on or off the electricity when necessary. Some smart homes can receive a visitor, allowing him to come in and offering him a drink. They can even feed the pets and water the plants. Besides, using only the guiding information. When there is a problem, you can deal with it yourself without paying a professional worker.
However, for home-users, the smart home technology is far from perfect. It can be a little expensive to own a smart home because the technology and the devices cost a lot. Also the system(系统) allows its owner to get home information from anywhere, so it leaves the home easy to be broken into by hackers (黑客)
Now, many scientists are excited at the future of smart home technology. Imagine being able to get fashion advice from your mirror, or receive food shopping suggestions from your fridge. While there are others who worry that those smart devices will make people lazier and lonelier. Whatever it is, one thing is for sure——smart home technology will change the way we live and work.

When you come back to your home on a hot summer night, you find that the lights are already on, the air conditioner has been working for 30 minutes to cool the room, and the rice you prepared this morning has been cooked right before you arrive. This is the magic of a smart home.
A smart home is a special home where you can remotely control things with your phone. There are many kinds of smart home products, from making your home warm to making it bright, and even keeping you safe.
And they really are “smart”. Smart home apps even have self-learning skills. It means that they can learn when you usually do things and change to suit you. Some can also set lights to change based on sunrise or sunset times. And some systems can tell you if there is someone in your home when you are not there, or even call for help if there is danger.
Although smart homes are getting more popular in China and around the world, there are some problems from time to time. Paul Boag, a man from the UK who helps people with their technology, wrote that it is not always easy to set up these smart things. Even his wife, who used to be an engineer, found fitting the smart home light switches (开关) was a huge challenge for her. Besides, the smart home apps can be trouble. Many of them are not designed well, and each device (设备) has its own app. This means you have to deal with a lot of apps. But except for these problems, smart homes are still a great way to make life easier.
1.What is a smart home?
2.What are the disadvantages of smart homes?
3.What other “smart” skills do you want your home to have? Why?

Scientists from Washington State University invented a robot. It could help old people with dementia (痴呆) or people who have difficulty living by themselves in their own homes.
The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors (传感器) to find out where its owners are, what they are doing and when they need help with daily activities. It runs around rooms to find people on its own and can even lead them to things like medicine or snacks in the kitchen.
At present, about half of the adults over 85 in the US need help with daily activities and the cost is nearly $2,000 billion every year. That’s why scientists invented RAS. Scientists did a study to show how RAS could make life easier for older adults. In the study, they asked 26 young participants (参与者) to complete three activities in a smart home with RAS. The participants needed to walk the dog, take medicine and water house plants. When the sensors found someone was struggling with one of the things, RAS received a message to help. The robot then used its sensors to find the person and provide help.
When scientists asked the participants about the robot, someone said, “When I get older, I prefer to have one in my home.” Others also thought so.

AI is a common theme in science fiction. But the level that AI could reach is a real concern (关心的事) of many people. With more talk of AI and smart devices (设备) in the home, what is the good of bringing these things into your life?
Hans Rosling, a professor of international health, once spoke about the changes that the washing machine made. The once-arduous (曾经费力的) task of cleaning clothes by hand was taken on by a machine. And people have freed up more time for other activities. There are so many smart devices that you can use in your home. Imagine waking up to find a hot, freshly made cup of coffee and clean floors that have been recently swept. With smart devices, these things can happen while you sleep. Automating (使自动化) parts of your life means that you can focus on other tasks in your life.
But there is a difference between smart devices and AI. Smart devices are the things that perform the tasks, while AI can “think”, and can be used to control the smart devices. There are many AI systems which can control the smart devices around your home. You can ask these AI-powered home devices to start making coffee, play some music or search the Internet for you. Some of these devices even have a sense of humour, and when you ask them certain questions, they will talk back. In some ways, they can act as company.
Well, in films and games we often see robots taking over all of the housework. It seems for now, that this only lives in our imaginations, but it could take place sooner than we think.
1.According to the passage, the once-arduous tasks taken on by a machine help people make more time to .
2.AI smart devices and many AI systems can control the smart devices around your home.
3.You may be talked back to by your AI-powered home devices that have a .
4.The writer believes that the dream of robots helping with all of the housework will in the future.
5.Which one do you prefer, smart home devices or AI? Why?

Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no." or “we don't know." But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings(人:生物).
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life," say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies," says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? "Probably not," says Shostak. "It's a long way. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.
1.How many galaxies are there in the universe?
2.Which galaxy is Earth in?
3.What allows scientists to discover smaller planets?
4.Why haven’t beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak?
5.What do you think of intelligent life on other planets in our universe?

You wake up in the morning. A soft light turns on in your room. You go into the bathroom and the shower starts. After your shower, you go into the kitchen. Your favorite breakfast is already cooked. and it’s on the table, ready to eat. Now it’s time to go to work. It’s rainy. You live alone, but you find that your umbrella is already by the door.
How is all this possible? Welcome to your future life!
Technology will allow homes in the future to be “smart”. Household machines will communicate with each other and with you. Your stove will tell you when your food is cooked and ready to eat. Fridges will suggest recipes (食谱) according to food materials you already have.
The technology is possible because of tiny information-storing devices(装置) called RFID chips. Future RFID chips will store information about all the things in your cupboards.
Are you tired of the color of your walls? In a smart home, you won’t have to repaint them. The walls will actually be digital screens, like TV screens. The technology is called OLED and it’s here already. OLED walls will become clear, like windows and display colors and patterns.
A computer network will connect these walls with everything else in your house. Called “ambient intelligence”(环境智能), this computer “brain” will control your whole house. It will suit your preferences (喜好). Your house will learn about your likes and dislikes. It will then use that knowledge to control the environment. For example, it will set the heat in the house to your favorite temperature. It will also turn on the radio in the morning because you like to listen to the news then.
But how about your cooked breakfast and the umbrella you found by the door? For those, you can thank your robot helper. Futurologists predict that many homes will have robots in the future. Robots already do many things. But scientists today are starting to build friendlier, more intelligent robots—ones that people will feel more comfortable having around in the house.
How soon will this smart home be a reality? There’s a good chance it will be a part of your life in 25 or 30 years, perhaps sooner.

What is 5G? It is the fifth generation(代)of mobile network technology. These new networks are coming.
China gave out commercial license(商用牌照)for 5G on June 6, 2019. This means that China’s Telecom(中国电信)companies have been able to offer 5G networks for mobile phone users.
Each mobile network generation is faster and more powerful than the one before it. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data(数据)and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster. What’s special about 5G?
5G has a very short delay(延时)between sending and receiving information. Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds(毫秒)to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond. This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, but also deeply change our lives.
5G + entertainment(娱乐)
5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can download(下载)a movie in seconds.
5G + transportation
5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals(信号)to each other. 5G will allow cars to react(反应)even faster than real drivers.
5G + smart homes
5G also makes the Internet of things possible. Internet of things is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it. For example, if its sensor(感应器)feels the air becoming dry, a smart sprinkler(喷壶)can water your plants by itself.
1.How many generations of mobile network technology have been in use in China so far?
2.What happened on 6 June, 2019 according to the passage?
3.Why is 5G the big change?
4.If it takes you much time to download a film with 4G network, how long does it take you to download it with 5G network?
5.What’s the topic of the passage?

Smart homes have been around for some time. Scottish company Pico Electronics invented a type of technology called X10 in 1975. It allows household devices (设备), such as lights and alarms, to communicate with each other by using radio waves.
Of course, 5G network connectivity has made smart homes more convenient. Perhaps the most widespread smart home technology is the voice-activated assistant(语音激活助手).

【答案】1.At least 100 billion. 2.In the Milky Way. 3.Powerful telescopes. 4.Because it's a long way. 5.I think intelligent life on other planets could be friendly, or it could be scary. It's unknown.
