In the scientific history, few rivalries (竞争) have captured the imagination like the one between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. These two inventors, each with their unique approaches and visions, engaged in a fierce competition that forever transformed the world of electricity and innovation.
The paths of Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison first crossed in the late 1800s when Tesla arrived in the United States with his boundless enthusiasm and inventive spirit. Tesla, a young Serbian engineer, sought opportunities to work on his ambitious ideas. Edison, already an established inventor and entrepreneur, recognized Tesla’s talent and employed him at his company, the Edison Machine Works.
It was during Tesla’s time working for Edison that the seeds of rivalry were sown. Edison advocated direct current (DC) as the dominant method for electrical distribution, while Tesla saw the potential of alternating current (AC) systems, which offered greater efficiency over longer distances.
The turning point in their rivalry occurred with the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893.Tesla, backed by George Westinghouse, successfully showcased the superiority of AC by lighting the fairgrounds with his AC-powered system. This success crushed Edison’s claims of DC’s superiority, leading to the widespread adoption of AC as the standard for electrical power transmission (传输).
However, due to Edison’s influence, AC power was initially dismissed as dangerous and unreliable. In order to demonstrate its safety, Tesla held a public demonstration where he famously lit up a string of lights using his AC motor powered by Niagara Falls, proving once and for all that AC power was safe for use in homes and businesses around the world.
While both sides fought fiercely for control of electricity distribution networks across America, it was ultimately Tesla’s AC system that won out due to its greater efficiency over long distances compared with DC systems which quickly lost voltage (电压) as distance increased from their source point. Eventually even Edison himself came around and accepted defeat when he finally admitted that “Tesla has solved an extremely difficult problem”.
Despite their differences, the two men had an unwilling respect for each other. Edison was known to refer to Tesla as “one of the greatest electrical geniuses the world has ever seen” while Tesla praised Edison’s contributions to the field of electricity. Though their rivalry defined the development of electricity in the late 19th century, its impact still resonates (产生共鸣) today.
24. In which aspect did Tesla’s and Edison’s views on electrical systems differ?
A. The source of electrical power.
B. The invention of electrical devices.
C. The efficiency of power generation.
D. The method of electrical transmission.
25. How did Tesla prove the reliability of AC power?
A. By conducting a public experiment at Niagara Falls.
B. By displaying AC- powered lighting in a community.
C. By getting support from George Westinghouse.
D. By highlighting the limitations of DC power.
26. Why did Tesla’s AC system finally achieve success?
A. It provided higher voltage outputs.
B. It was easier to operate and maintain.
C. It had superior long-range performance.
D. It received more financial backing.
27. What message does the author want to convey in the text?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining.
B. Real knowledge comes from practice.
C. A rising tide lifts all boats.
D. Rivalry fuels progress.
【答案】24. D 25. A 26. C 27. D

China’s top legislative body (立法机构) has approved a proposal to raise the country’s retirement age, the official Xinhua news agency said on Friday, accelerating an overhaul of decades-old laws to tackle the economic pressure of a shrinking workforce. China’s retirement ages are currently amongst the lowest globally. Reform is urgent with life expectancy in China having risen to 78 years as of 2021 from about 44 years in 1960 and projected to exceed 80 years by 2050. At the same time, the working population needed to support the elderly is shrinking.
The retirement age will be raised for men to 63 years old from 60, while for women in white collar work it would be raised to 58 years from 55.For women in blue collar work it will be increased to 55 from 50. The changes are set to come into force on Jan. 1, 2025 and be implemented over a 15 year period.
Having people work for longer would ease pressure on pension budgets with many Chinese provinces already suffering from large deficits. But delaying pension payouts and requiring older workers to stay at their jobs longer may not be welcomed by all of them.
By raising the retirement age, the government can increase the labour force participation rate, helping to relieve the harming effects of population aging, said Xiujian Peng, senior research fellow at the Centre of Policy Studies at Victoria University in Australia. “The government must take action. If the population continues to decline, the shrinking of the labour force will accelerate, further negatively impacting economic growth.”
Wang Xiaoping, Minister of Human Resources and Social Security, said on Friday that the raising of the retirement age would be done gradually, with the adjustment starting from next year but taking 15 years to fully implement. It would be done on a flexible and voluntary basis whereby an employee can choose to retire earlier or extend retirement for a period of up to three years, she said.
In China, authorities expect the population of those aged 60 and older to rise from 280 million to more than 400 million by 2035, equal to that of Britain and the United States combined. The state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences said the pension system would run out of money by 2035 without further reform. China’s move aligns it more closely with its regional peers, Japan and South Korea, where people can only receive pensions at 65 and 63 years, respectively.
28. Why has Chinese government decided to raise the retirement age?
A. The increasing pressure on pension budgets.
B. The longer life expectancy of Chinese people.
C. The shrinking workforce needed to support the elderly.
D. The economic pressure of a shrinking workforce.
29. Why does the writer use such numbers in Para 6?
A. To give examples of the different retirement ages in both China and other countries.
B. To demonstrate the urgent necessity of the reform of the retirement age in China.
C. To make comparisons about the retirement ages between China and foreign countries.
D. To illustrate Chinese great progress in the reform of the retirement age.
30. What does the underlined word “align” mean in the last paragraph?
A. differ B. improve C. resemble D. worsen
31. What is the article mainly about?
A. The shrinking labour force is impacting economic growth negatively.
B. Chinese workforce will have more time to work to support the elderly.
C. The Chinese pension system is in urgent need of a reform.
D. China will raise the retirement age to relieve economic pressure.
【答案】28. D 29. B 30. C 31. D

London-based startup Brilliant Planet has rented 6,100 hectares of land in southern Morocco, situated between the Atlantc Ocean and the Sahara. And it’s using it to grow algae (藻类), which absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide and sends out oxygen.
Brilliant Planet’s CEO Adam Taylor says the company has developed a way to grow algae at extreme rates starting in a glass cup in a lab and ending in 12,000-square-meter pools of locally-sourced seawater. The algae is obtained from the water then pumped up a 10-story tower and sprayed into the desert air. In the 30 seconds or so it takes to reach the ground, hot air dries the biomass (生物质) out, leaving hypersaline (超盐的) algae pieces which can be collected and shallow buried, sequestering (使隔绝) their carbon for thousands of years.
“Nature-based solutions are a great way of removing carbon,” Taylor said. “Deserts are an underused environment. It does not cost a lot of money to rent the desert. What’s more, you’re not competing with farms or forests. You’re out of the way, not bothering people.”
Taylor claims that Brilliant Planet’s solution can permanently remove 30 times more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per hectare per year than a typical European forest. Brilliant Planet’s goal is to remove one million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year by the end of the decade.“Globally, we’ve identified about half a million square kilometers of flat desert-ocean land where it works,” Taylor said, adding that the company hopes to set up in Namibia next.
Fatna Ikrame El Fanne, an environmental engineer, described the use of algae as “a new and promising strategy” that “is a typical example of innovative use of natural process to address an urgent global issue.” Nevertheless, she expressed caution. “Microalgae production on a large scale might damage local ecosystems, lead to overuse of water resources, and change habitats,” she said.
There’s an acknowledgement that one company can’t do it all — and can’t go it alone. “We are part of a group of probably 40 to 50 wonderful ideas of how people can remove carbon from the atmosphere,” Taylor said, calling for “a Manhattan Project-type attitude” to tackling carbon capture. Whether algae is the solution the world needs remains to be seen. But the idea’s growing on people.
32. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Brilliant Planet?
A. Its establishment of an algae plant.
B. Its method of growing algae.
C. Its process of carbon capture.
D. Its daily routine in the desert.
33. What advantage did Taylor highlight about using deserts for carbon removal?
A. Huge profits.
B. High temperature.
C. No occupation of rich land.
D. No biodiversity concerns.
34. What can be inferred about the use of algae from El Fanne’s words?
A. It needs improving.
B. It is highly efficient.
C. It is not worth promoting.
D. It is commercially developed.
35. Why is “a Manhattan Project- type attitude” mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To highlight the challenges of carbon removal.
B. To recognize the contributions of Brilliant Planet.
C. To prove the effectiveness of nature-based solutions.
D. To emphasize the necessity of joint efforts.

【32题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“The algae is obtained from the water then pumped up a 10-story tower and sprayed into the desert air. In the 30 seconds or so it takes to reach the ground, hot air dries the biomass (生物质) out, leaving hypersaline (超盐的) algae pieces which can be collected and shallow buried, sequestering (使隔绝) their carbon for thousands of years.(从水中提取藻类,然后泵入一座10层楼高的塔,喷洒到沙漠的空气中。在到达地面的30秒左右的时间里,热空气将生物质干燥,留下高盐分的藻类碎片,这些藻类可以被收集并浅埋,将它们的碳封存数千年)”可知,本段在介绍利用海藻吸收二氧化碳的过程。故选C项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Deserts are an underused environment. It does not cost a lot of money to rent the desert. What’s more, you’re not competing with farms or forests. You’re out of the way, not bothering people.(沙漠是一个未被充分利用的环境。租用沙漠并不需要花很多钱。更重要的是,你不会与农场或森林竞争。你不碍事,不打扰别人)”可知,泰勒强调了利用沙漠去除碳的优势是不占用肥沃的土地。故选C项。

It’s one thing to say you’re going to get rid of your phone on your next vacation, but it’s quite another thing to actually do it. ____37____ Once you get used to small blocks of time without it, it will be easier and easier to forget how much you relied on it.
If you’re in a situation where you can’t drop your phone, limit the time to use technology during the moments you absolutely have to use it. For example, spend a morning in bed on a Saturday to catch up on social media and then rely less on your phone the rest of the day. ____38____
Not to sound too much like a lecturing mom, but mealtimes should be quality time with your dining companions in real life. Quick-response (QR) codes for menus at restaurants can be a little annoying too, since you’ re dining out with friends to spend time with them, not get absorbed in your phone. ____39____ If you have to use your phone to order dinner, put it back in your purse as soon as you can.
____40____ Where you sleep, for example, should be a restful place, not a place to get worked up over social media posts. Start your digital detox by taking the television out of the room, and definitely keep your phone elsewhere while you sleep.
A. You are not alone as a digital addict.
B. Ask for a paper menu whenever possible.
C. Specify some areas of your home as tech-free.

【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了数字排毒(digital detox)的概念,即计划性地、有意识地远离数字技术,并提供了一些实践数字排毒的建议。
【36题详解】
根据前文“Is there anyone who couldn’t spend a little less time on their phone? A digital detox (戒毒) may be just what you need.(有人不能少花一点时间在手机上吗?也许你需要的正是“数码戒毒”)”可知,E项“It is a planned and mindful break from digital technology.(这是一次有计划的、有意识的与数字技术的分离)”是对前文“数码戒毒”的解释,符合文意。故选E项。
【37题详解】
根据前文“It’s one thing to say you’re going to get rid of your phone on your next vacation, but it’s quite another thing to actually do it.(说你要在下次度假时扔掉手机是一回事,但真正做到这一点又是另一回事)”以及后文“Once you get used to small blocks of time without it, it will be easier and easier to forget how much you relied on it.(一旦你习惯了一小段时间没有它,你就会越来越容易忘记你是多么依赖它)”可知,本段主要讲述,真的做到去放下手机,所以D项“Try setting aside your phone for an afternoon.(试着把手机拿开一下午)”符合本段主题。故选D项。
【38题详解】
设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“If you’re in a situation where you can’t drop your phone, limit the time to use technology during the moments you absolutely have to use it. For example, spend a morning in bed on a Saturday to catch up on social media and then rely less on your phone the rest of the day.(如果你处于不能放下手机的情况下,那就在你必须使用科技产品的时候限制使用它的时间。例如,周六早上在床上刷社交媒体,然后在一天的剩余时间里减少对手机的依赖)”可知,F项“You just might find that you now have time for a new hobby.(你可能会发现你现在有时间培养一个新的爱好)”是对前文的总结,限制使用科技产品的时间,然后会发现你现在有时间培养一个新的爱好。故选F项。
【39题详解】
根据前文“Quick-response (QR) codes for menus at restaurants can be a little annoying too, since you’ re dining out with friends to spend time with them, not get absorbed in your phone.(餐厅菜单上快速响应代码也有点烦人,因为你和朋友出去吃饭是为了和他们共度时光,而不是全神贯注于你的手机)”以及后文“If you have to use your phone to order dinner, put it back in your purse as soon as you can.(如果你不得不用手机点餐,尽快把它放回钱包里)”可知,此处是在讲述餐馆就餐时,尽量不用手机,所以B项“Ask for a paper menu whenever possible.(尽可能要一份纸质菜单)”符合此处主题,承接上文,引出下文。故选B项。
【40题详解】
设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“Where you sleep, for example, should be a restful place, not a place to get worked up over social media posts. Start your digital detox by taking the television out of the room, and definitely keep your phone elsewhere while you sleep.(例如,你睡觉的地方应该是一个安静的地方,而不是一个因为社交媒体帖子而生气的地方。从把电视从房间里拿出来开始戒掉数码产品吧,睡觉的时候一定要把手机放在别的地方)”可知,本段主要讲述了让家里一个地方尽量没有电子产品,所以C项“Specify some areas of your home as tech-free.(指定你家里的一些区域为无科技)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选C项。

【答案】Dear Peter,
Knowing that you are passionate about whether senior students should employ AI as a learning aid, I’m genuinely privileged to inform you about the result of our discussion launched in our class last week.
Concerning AI-assisted learning, I believe it can be a useful tool when used correctly, which helps with understanding and can provide addition al support. However, it’s important to balance its use with your own efforts to ensure you truly grasp the material.
My suggestion is to use AI tools as a supplement rather than a replacement. Try to engage actively with your studies and seek help from your teacher when necessary. Keep a positive attitude and keep working hard!
Best wishes,

He, an unemployed poor man, was driving his beat-up truck on a two-lane country road on a chilly night. Suddenly, he saw an old lady, whose car broke down on the side of the road. Even in the dim light of the night, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her car and got off.
Despite the smile on his face, the old lady was worried. Was he going to hurt her? He looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Joe Anderson.”
Well, all she had was only a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Joe crawled under the car. Half an hour later, he finished changing the tire. But he got dirty and his hands hurt. She could not thank him enough and asked him how much money she owed him. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give the person the assistance he needed. He waited until she started her car and drove off. Then he left.
A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat and take the chill off. The waitress noticed the lady’s we t hair and brought a clean towel to wipe it. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant. She was curious and asked, “It’s too late and freezing cold. As a mother-to-be, why don’t you go home early?” “My husband is out of job, so I want to share the burden of supporting the family with him. Besides, I also want to help the people in need at night.” The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger.

【答案】参考范文
Then, she remembered Joe and determined to spread the chain of love. She was about to pay the bill when a good idea struck her. While the waitress was away to get change for her, the old lady wrote something on the napkin and slipped right out of the door. The waitress was back and noticed it. Under the napkin were four new 100 dollars. It turned out that the lady wished her to accept the money from a stranger and that she would help others with the purpose of letting this chain of love remain.
Deeply moved, the waitress was eager to tell her husband Joe what had happened. Shortly after she took a warm bath, she climbed into bed, pouring out everything about the night——the lady, the money and the note. With baby due next month, it was indeed going to be hard for the couple. The money came as a relief to them. She gave her husband a soft kiss and whispered, “Everything is going to be all right. I love you, Joe.”

24 In which aspect did Tesla’s and Edison’s views on electrical systems differ?
