Trees are crucial to us.We rely on trees,of course,to absorb and store carbon dioxide. They provide
us with food, fuel, medicine and construction materials, shelter us from storms and reduce soil erosion.
Without them, other plants and animals would be lost for ever-in the UK,native trees feed and shelter
about 2,300 other species. We are only beginning to fully comprehend their social nature and the"wood
wide web"which connects plants together. We need them, too, due to the fact that their beauty lifts our
spirits and restores our calm.
There are almost 58,500 tree species in the world,a richness few of us can truly comprehend. But a
shocking new interational study has warned that between a third and half of those are at risk of extinction
in the wild, posing a risk of wider ecosystem collapse.
More than 440 have fewer than 50 individuals left in natural environments.Worse, even plentiful trees
that survive will in many cases do so in greatly reduced numbers. In Brazil, where around one in five tree
species are at risk,deforestation()in the Amazon has hit the highest annual level in a decade.
Farming,grazing()and logging do great harm to the habitats, thus causing tree loss.Plus, global
heating and its consequences, from extreme weather to rising sea levels, are increasingly taking their toll.
Tropical()island states are particularly affected, but the problems lie closer to our country too.
Protecting such habitats must be the top priority. One study suggests that global tree cover has actually
increased over recent decades, but 420 million hectares of forest were lost between 1990 and 2020.
However important tree-planting plans may be,new plantations are not as good as complex and biodiverse
environments that have developed over centuries.
Where forests have been crased, natural regeneration is often best.Failing that, planting a variety of
species is better than simply relying on a few fast-growing kinds of young plants. And only through joint
efforts with communities, can protection be sustainable.
28.What will probably happen if about half of existing tree species disappear?
A.More species may arise.
B.Few of us may admire trees.
C.The ecosystem may break down.
D.Storms may occur more frequently.

A.To inform us of the functions of trces.

With the New Year coming, quite a few of people's resolution is to lose weight.Basically, there are
two options, either from a human coach or from an AI trainer. The question is:can artificial intelligence(AI)
personal trainers replace human ones?
"I'd never set foot in a gym before,"says Varun Bhanot, the chief executive of AI fitness software firm
Magic AI."I found it too intimidating, costly and inconvenient when you've got to travel to get there."
When Mr.Bhanot needed to lose weight or face health problems,he transformed his life with the help of a
human personal trainer. But it dawned on Mr.Bhanot that advice from an AI fitness chatbot, available to
people in their own homes, could make a healthy lifestyle more accessible. So,in 2021,he set up Magic AI.
Its main product, the Magic Mirror,is a touch-screen mirror that also plays a video of an AI-powered
trainer in human form."When you log in you put in all of your biometric information, and then the AI
generates a personalized program, just like a human personal trainer,"says Mr Bhanot. The AI trainer can
talk to you via loudspeakers and using cameras to track your workout movements, and it offers instant
feedback and suggestions. As you progress,it devises new workouts.
But can AI really replicate the motivation that comes from human interaction?Pilates teacher Esther
Fox doesn't think so."People want to speak to somebody they know and trust,"she says."AI is not
something I would particularly want to use.The way to get results is by connecting with people. It's a very
human experience."By contrast,British sprinter Desirec Henry says,"Even if you're doing a home
workout alone,it feels like someone is supporting you through the session."
"Sensors in Lumin Fitness'studio can watch every member of the class, monitoring form, and giving
feedback on every movement,"says Mr Bhanot. However,a human trainer is also in the room."We're not
trying to replace the talent of the trainers,"adds Mr Bhanot."We're giving them tools to provide a better
experience. The coach is crucial in building a community. There are certain things you can't replicate, like
face-to-face high-fives and smiles."
32.What inspired Mr Bhanot to set up Magic AI?
A.His own fitness experience.
B.The high cost of exercising in a gym.
C.His wish to lose weight.
D.His talent and skills in the computer.
33.How does the author develop Paragraph 4?
A.By giving data.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By explaining the reasons.
D.By quoting proverbs.
34.Why is there a human trainer in Lumin Fitness?
A.To monitor every member of the class.
B.To offer instant feedback to exercising people.
C.To provide emotional support.
D.To build a community of Al personal trainers.

The snowstorm was to hit the evening of Monday,Jan.31,2022.After work,I had to take the laptop
my colleague left in my office to his house before it came.On the way to his place,I picked up two pizzas
because I'd promised my kids I'd bring some home for dinner..
It took me about 15 minutes to get to my colleague's house, where I dropped off the laptop case and
got right back on the road. Then the snow started and it was coming down fast.It came in fast and so windy
that it screamed.
The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow.I didn't have a clue where I was.I
stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer's field.I called 911.The dispatcher()told me
to sit tight and wait things out for the night-nobody was coming to get me until morning at the earliest.
Those seconds after the call were agony.Getting out to walk in the white world with zero visibility,
high winds and a low temperature wasn't a wise option.Would the storm continue for longer than predicted
or would I be found too late?My kids!It was the first time they would ever be spending a night without me
at home.I was literally terrified at the scene that the snow was piled up.
I stayed in the car and texted my colleague whose laptop bag I had just returncd. He had an idea."Pin
your location on Google Maps and send it to me,"he said.I did,and a few minutes later he told me that I
was on a road called Bouvier Lane,in between two farms. At 6:30 p.m,I posted this new information to my
Facebook community group, hoping for anyone who knew who lived on the farms to help me get rescucd.
At 8 p.m,my cellphone rang.It was the son of the farmer who owned the land beside the road I was
stranded on.He told me that his dad,Andy, was coming to get me.
