The Chinese video game “Black Myth: Wukong” has become a big hit. It sold more than 10 million copies in just three days after it came out on August 20. The game is based on the Chinese story Journey to the West.
In the game, you play as the Destined One (天命人), a monkey following in the footsteps of the Monkey King on a journey to bring him back.
Many players, especially those from Western countries, find the game’s story and characters hard to understand because it’s so much about Chinese culture. To help, some Western fans have put in a lot of work. One fan even wrote a long summary of Sun Wukong’s abilities in all 100 chapters of Journey to the West.
“Black Myth: Wukong” received a lot of praise for being the first AAA game made in China, despite the huge investment (投资), lengthy production cycles, and expensive development costs.
Unlike other Chinese mobile games that need constant micropayments, this one requires a one-time payment of 268 yuan ($37. 58) for the basic version (版本) and 328 yuan for the premium (保险费) . Citi reported that pre-sales hit 400 million yuan by the time the game launched (发行) on Tuesday.
By looking into the game and its background, Western players not only improved their gaming skills but also grew to understand Sun Wukong and the story of Journey to the West. “Global players will understand traditional Chinese culture while having fun,” according to Global Times.
“Sun Wukong gives off a carefree, independent and chaotic (无秩序的) nature. He is not controlled by the need to set a good example for others like Spider-Man or Superman, who follow strict rules like ‘with great power comes great responsibility.’” said Patrick McCarthy from the US.
Journey to the West tells an exciting story of a dangerous journey and looks at different ideas, which has inspired a lot of stories across cultures. The book has been translated into many languages, showing its lasting popularity.
56. What do we know about the game?
A. Its players are mainly Westerners. B. Players need to bring the Monkey King back.
C. Players play as the Monkey King. D. It tells the story of Journey to the West.
57. The underlined word “carefree” probably means “____________”.
A. unworried B. unhappy C. careful D. strong
58. According to Patrick, what makes Sun Wukong a different kind of hero?
A. He strictly follows rules. B. He has great power and abilities.
C. He sets a good example for others. D. He follows his own rules and wishes.
59. Which of the following statement is NOT true about “Black Myth: Wukong” according to the passage?
A. It has made the book Journey to the West very popular around the world.
B. It is the first AAA game developed in China.
C. It requires constant micropayments.
D. It received praise for its production quality.
60. What is the text mainly about?
A. Culture in video game “Black Myth: Wukong”. B. People’s love for video games.
C. Famous books about Chinese culture. D. Worldwide interest in a Chinese game.
C
The ability of reading and writing doesn’t come naturally to people. Although it takes some effort, eighty-six percent of the world’s population have learned how to read and write, and the number has been increasing for centuries.
Literacy (读写能力) makes it possible for us to travel around the world filled with books, websites, text messages, road signs, and more. But the world of information is changing. Why send a long letter or text when you can share photos or videos instead? Why learn from a book when you can learn from a video? Why read magazines when you can listen to podcasts (播客)?
Could people join today’s world without the abilities of reading or writing? ★ Most of our devices (设备) now talk to us and take spoken orders. Smart cars ask for where you go and then give directions. Smart virtual (虚拟的) assistants, like Siri, listen for requests to report the weather, play a song and much more. Some apps can also read text aloud or turn speech into text. These devices aren’t perfect——the apps still make silly mistakes. But they’re getting better and better. So it’s possible to imagine a future world where we can easily communicate with these devices.
But reading and writing are powerful tools. For one, most people read faster than they speak. A podcaster speaks at around 150 to 160 words each minute, while a strong reader can look through a text at 300 to 400 words each minute. That’s twice as fast! Research has also found that when people read, they can remember more information and stay more interested than when they listen. Learning to read also creates new connections in the brain. With the invention of reading, our brain has been changed, which developed the ways to think and changed the intellectual evolution (智力进化) of humans.
What do you think? Do you hope people keep on reading and writing or will technology make literacy obsolete?
61. Paragraph 1 mainly focuses on ____________.
A. what the literacy is like B. how people like the literacy
C. what challenge the literacy faces D why people’s literacy fails
62. Which of the following can be put in ★ ?
A. It’s still a dream. B. Technology makes it possible.
C. Scientists believe it difficult. D. Some people are not sure about that.
63. According to paragraph 4, we know that ____________.
A. learning to read has good effects on our brains
B. people can remember more and stay more interested when listening
C. everyone reads faster than they speak
D. a podcaster speaks faster than a strong reader
64. The underlined word “obsolete” in paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “____________”.
A. useful B. impossible C. out of date D. out of reach
65. The questions in the last paragraph are to make readers ____________.
A. question the topic B. support the opinion
C. learn from the experience D. debate for the situation
