Enjoy Your Own Speed C Have you ever experienced the feeling of falling as you start to fall asleep? Sometimes you may come to realize this feeling. If so, don’t worry. Many people have felt the same thing. In fact, these muscle twitches (肌肉抽搐) in the arms, legs or other parts of the body are called hypnic jerks (入睡抽动). And they are very common. Up to 70 percent of people experience them sometimes, Huffington Post reported. But what causes it? There are some theories. Some scientists believe that the feeling of falling comes from the body relaxing itself, especially if the person is anxious or unable to get comfortable. As you are about to sleep, your muscles become relaxed. But your brain stays awake. It misunderstands the relaxing of your muscles as a sign that you’re falling. Then the brain jerks the body awake as if it’s trying to protect you. Other scientists believe that different phases of sleep might cause the hypnic jerks. When we sleep, we experience two phases: non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). During REM, our heart rate, breathing and nervous system can act irregularly. If the body experiences flashes of REM while entering sleep, these irregularities could cause twitches. If you don’t want to experience hypnic jerks, scientists have some suggestions. When you become deeply relaxed, you can learn how to reconnect slowly by moving your fingers and toes a little bit. Then start to move your head and open your eyes, while being aware of yourself as you get out of the relaxed state. But experts agree that hypnic jerks, though sometimes scary, are harmless. If it wakes you up, simply roll over and go back to sleep. But keep in mind: a caffeinated (含咖啡因的) drink, exciting evening activities or stress may make hypnic jerks happen more often. 8. What does the third paragraph mainly tells us? A. the difference between REM and NREM B. the feeling of falling comes from the body relaxing itself C. the bad influence of REM D. the different stages of sleep that lead to hypnic jerks 9. According to the passage, which of the following statement is true? A. At least 70 percent of people experience hypnic jerks. B. Experts agree that Hypnic jerks are scary and harmful. C. Our heart rate acts irregularly during REM. D. You can reconnect by moving fingers, toes and then open your eyes at once. 10. Which of the following cannot make hypnic jerks happen more often? A. drinking coffee B. playing basketball for a long time C. reading a book quietly D. having too much pressure 11. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. D When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new. Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people? Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time? Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble? Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation-Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to actually do in reality. Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us. Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t actually believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy and time, and at some point or another, it is too tiring. But meeting new people is important. Life is too short so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot. 12. What is the author like according to Paragraph 1? A. He likes to go for a walk with others. B. He plays an active part in attending social events. C. He feels nervous lately. D. He’s afraid of talking to others once in a while. 13. What problem do young people nowadays have according to the author? A. They rely on the Internet to socialize. B. They are less confident in themselves. C. They have difficulty in communicating. D. They don’t feel like making new friends. 14. Which is NOT the reason why many young people avoid meeting new people? A They have to do what they don’t want to. B. They want to take time to do meaningful work. C They feel tired of communicating with new people. D. They think it is a trouble. 15. Why does the writer write the passage? A. To tell about the importance of friends. B. To give tips on how to meet new people. C. To encourage people to meet new people. D. To introduce the disadvantage of Generation-Y. Many times we need to write an invitation. ________ Here’s all of the information you need to write on your party invitation. D. You can reconnect by moving fingers toes and then open your eyes at once. 10. Which of the following cannot make hypnic jerks happen more often? A. drinking coffee B. playing basketball for a long time C. reading a book quietly D. having too much pressure 11. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? A. B. C. D. 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. 根据“Other scientists believe that different phases of sleep might cause the hypnic jerks.” 根据“During REM, our heart rate, breathing and nervous system can act irregularly.” 根据“But keep in mind: a caffeinated (含咖啡因的) drink, exciting evening activities or stress may make hypnic jerks happen more often.” D。 D When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. A. They have to do what they don’t want to. B. They want to take time to do meaningful work. C. They feel tired of communicating with new people. D. They think it is a trouble. 15. Why does the writer write the passage? A. To tell about the importance of friends. B. To give tips on how to meet new people. C. To encourage people to meet new people. D. To introduce the disadvantage of Generation-Y. 12. D 13. A 14. B 15. It takes up so much energy and time, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.” 根据“But meeting new people is important. Life is too short so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh.
