Born in 1930 in Beijing, Yuan Longping studied hard from the time he was a child. In order to tackle food crisis, he chose to study agriculture. Yuan Longping made the greatest impact on China’s agricultural science. His hybrid strains not only feed China, but also the whole world.
Devoted to agriculture, Yuan worked on agriculture after he graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing. He considered himself a farm worker because he continually worked the land in his research.
The Father of Hybrid Rice
Yuan was determined to solve food crisis in China. Through intense effort, Yuan overcame enormous technical difficulties to develop the first hybrid rice that could be used for farming in 1974. As a result of Yuan’s research, China’s rice production has increased rapidly, in turn, he worked out the problem of food shortage. Yuan’s contribution helped feed not just china, but many other countries that depend on rice as well.
In conclusion, Yuan was one of the most respected scientists. He was known as the “father of hybrid rice”, and his deeds always inspired us.
