I always wanted to be a firefighter. It seemed exciting to me. I like to be outside, lift heavy things and sleep on the ground!
In college, I got a job with the forest service. My first week on the job, they asked if I wanted to get my red card (training for forest fires). I said yes!
The training was a week long. I learned about the different types of fire crews (工作人员) and I remember the instructor saying hotshots were the top dogs. He said they had the most difficult and dangerous job and that you had to really prove yourself in order to be a hotshot. I was sold. I didn’t want to do anything else!
However, hotshot crews don’t hire (雇佣) people without fire experience. I returned home from training to Logan where the Logan Hotshots are based. I walked in and told the boss I wanted to be a hotshot and they should keep me in mind if they needed anyone.
The very next day I got a note saying the Hotshots were looking for me! A woman on their crew got injured and they needed a replacement... they were headed to a fire that day. They thought of me because I had just been there the day before.
We arrived at the fire near Provo, Utah at about 10 p.m. that night. We ended up working 40 hours, digging fire lines. I think I fell asleep standing up against my tool at one point.
My feet were covered in blisters (水泡) and the helicopter that was supposed to pick us up at the top of the mountain broke down and we had to walk miles!
To my delight, the crew liked me and hired me after that. I also met my husband that night! How cool is that!

6 Why did the Logan Hotshots send a note to the author?
A. They were short of persons. B. They wanted to test her skills.
C. They were satisfied with her ability. D. They thought she was rich in fire experience.
7. How did the author find the firefighting that night?
A. Dangerous. B. Exciting. C. Hard. D. Unsuccessful.

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.
When there's a recession in the economy(经济), those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
8. What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2?

As the saying goes, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." That's because this healthy food choice is supposed to be full of nutrients. The apple at the supermarket, though, might be so o1d that it has lost many of its nutrients. But soon there might be a way to check the quality of fruit by scanning it.
Scientists at Food+Future coLAB have come up with the idea of a handheld spectrometer(分光仪) that scans food. The machine will work by shining infrared(红外线的)light on a piece of produce. By measuring how chemicals in the fruit or vegetable take in the light, the scanner can recognize the food's chemical makeup.
"The machine can tell you exactly how old an apple is, how many calories it contains, what nutrients are present inside it, and even small differences in taste," Greg Shewmaker of Food+Future coLAB recently said.
For the new machine to be useful to consumers, researchers first need to create a database that contains possible chemicals for a particular type of fruit, like an apple, for example. Scientists will need to scan lots of pieces of produce to collect this data. The information collected will allow the scanners to tell customers the quality of fruit.
Once consumers know what's inside an apple, they can decide if they want to buy it. Knowing fruit quality may also affect how a store prices produce. "We can price produce based on the nutritional value," Shewmaker explained.
Food+Future coLAB has already created a working model of its machine. It says you may see one in your local supermarket within the next few years. Then deciding whether you've picked the healthiest fruit will be just a quick scan.
12. Why does the author mention the saying about apple at the beginning?
A. To prove that the apple is full of nutrients.
B. To introduce the topic of the fruit scanner.
C. To advise people to keep healthy by eating apples.
D. To state that the apple is the most tasty among fruits.
13. What do we know about the spectrometer?
A It is powered by infrared light.
B. It is not useful in many customers' eyes.
C. It can help customers decide which fruit to buy.
D. It can improve the quality of fruit and vegetables.
14. According to Shewmaker, what's a spectrometer's influence on a store?
A. It makes a store more attractive.
B. It provides price reference for produce.
C. It enriches customers' knowledge about food nutrition.
D. It creates a database about the chemical makeup of fruit.
15. What would be the best title for this text?
A. The Fruit Scanner B. The Priced Fruit
C. How to Scan Fruits D. How to Pick Fruits

A. It offers you a chance to study abroad. B. It can allow you to gain more knowledge.
C. It can improve the quality of your daily life. D. It encourages you to travel around the world.
9. What does the underlined word "recession" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. change. B. drop. C. growth. D. support.
10. How can one benefit from a good education ?
A. You can gossip about others’ affairs. B. You are likely to study well at school.
C. You can work well with your coworkers. D. You get to know excellent people with similar interests.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The benefits of attending college. B. The exchange with other cultures.
C. The access to good networking. D. The ways of college education.
D
A. It is powered by infrared light.
A The Fruit Scanner B. The Priced Fruit
C. How to Scan Fruits D. How to Pick Fruits

You’re chatting with a friend and want to recommend a good book. ____16____ It feels like it’s on the tip of your tongue, but the harder you try to remember, the more you can’t. We’ve all been there, and everyone knows how hard it is to remember all of that information in your head. Luckily, there are some things you can do to improve your memory.
·Repeat important information out loud. ____17____ When you repeat something out loud, you aren’t technically memorizing it. You’re actually creating a pattern and sound that will make the information easier to remember in the future.
·____18____ Turn the TV off while you study and get off the phone while you’re driving. When you do different activities at the same time, your attention is divided, which will make it hard to process the information necessary to remember what you’re doing.
·Take notes and write things down. Taking notes will help you memorize the information, even if you never look at your notes again! ____19____ So you’re better off sticking to pen and paper if you really want to remember your friend’s birthday or an important meeting.
·Take a short walk. There’s a lot of scientific evidence that taking a walk will jog your memory. If you are trying to remember something, spend a few minutes walking around your neighborhood to see if it helps. ____20____ At best, you’ll remember the name of that life-changing book from grade school!
