For most students, it was their first time to receive an expert introduction to the rich Chinese tea culture and traditional ways of making tea, with special attention to choosing the right water temperature for Chinese tea. The event was hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Malta. The master of the event was Sun Yi, a teacher at the institute. She started the event with a brief introduction to Chinese tea culture, followed by a practical demonstration of handling the different kinds of tea leaves. She described the central role of tea in the daily life of Chinese people and taught students how to pronounce “drink”, “tea” and “good” in Mandarin (普通话). “I love Chinese tea very much,” said Lexuri Vazquez, a third-year student majoring in international relations. She said she hadn’t really appreciated the difference between black and green tea before. Thanks to the tea tasting, however, this will change, she added. She would love to go to China one day to learn about more aspects of Chinese culture in the future. Jackie Theuma, office administrator of the Confucius Institute at the university, said she had tasted different kinds of Chinese tea, as the institute’s director, Ji Nengwen who is a Chinese, always shared his tea with her and other colleagues. Theuma has been working at the institute for 11 years, and Chinese culture and language have become a part of her life. Sun found the success of the event inspirational. The Confucius Institute holds cultural events as part of its Chinese-language teaching program to give students an opportunity to better understand what they learn in the classroom. “I will spare no efforts to introduce more aspects of Chinese culture through more events to students, and further raise their interest in learning Chinese and understanding Chinese culture,” Sun said. 24.The event at the University of Malta was intended to ______. I put my hand high above my head. The butterfly took off, flying into the sky and disappearing. That moment was in 1993. It was the first time I had ever tagged a butterfly. I got hooked. Over the years, I observed its change from egg to adult. I watched with eyes wide when the caterpillar would start to shed its skin and show its inner green body. My passion for science inspired by these small insects continued to Kenyon College in Ohio. There I was one of the few girls who majored in biology. I got involved in a long-term program fueled by generations of energetic volunteers. They tagged monarchs, monitored their migration south, and helped to give lectures at the local state park. It helped show patterns in monarch migration. Monitoring monarchs in the same location, year after year, allowed us to associate climate change with increasing delayed migrations, which had put the monarchs at risk. In another program, we visited a monarch reserve in March 2007. There, we tagged more than 3,000 monarchs, talked to hundreds of interested visitors, and witnessed the amazing movement of monarchs. It was a transformational experience. More and more visitors came every spring. The monarchs bring in thousands of tourists each year, helping the local economy and providing new ideas to protect the remaining forest. Monarch butterflies, and science programs supporting them, helped draw me into science over 20 years ago. Other projects like Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count have also inspired other young students to embark on careers in science. Engaging in any manner of projects, like monitoring sea level rise, contributes to science and helps get students of any age outdoors. Remember: science isn’t just for scientists. 28. What motivated the author to study biology in the college? A. Playing a butterfly game. B. The monarch’s migration. C. Her interest in butterflies. D. Feeding monarchs at home. 29. What might be a cause of monarch’s delayed migrations? A. Loss of forests. B. Lack of food sources. C. Climate change. D. Tourism development. 30. What does the author think of their visit to the monarch reserve in 2007? A. Well-organized. B. Rewarding. C. Laborious. D. Boring. 31. Why does the author mention Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count? A. To show who are real scientists. B. To prove her predictions. C. To advocate animal protection. D. To show its inspiring effect. 根据第二段“That moment was in 1993. (那是在1993年。这是我第一次给蝴蝶做标记。我被迷住了。多年来,我观察了它从卵到成虫的变化。当毛毛虫开始蜕皮,露出它绿色的身体时,我睁大了眼睛。这些小昆虫激发了我对科学的热情,这种热情一直延续到俄亥俄州的凯尼恩学院。在那里,我是少数几个主修生物的女孩之一)”可知,对蝴蝶的兴趣促使作者在大学学习生物学。故选C。 【小题29】细节理解题。根据第三段“Monitoring monarchs in the same location, year after year, allowed us to associate climate change with increasing delayed migrations, which had put the monarchs at risk. (年复一年地在同一地点监测帝王蝶,使我们能够将气候变化与越来越多的延迟迁徙联系起来,这使黑脉金斑蝶处于危险之中)”可知,气候变化导致黑脉金斑蝶推迟迁徙。故选C。 【小题30】推理判断题。根据第四段“It was a transformational experience. More and more visitors came every spring. The monarchs bring in thousands of tourists each year, helping the local economy and providing new ideas to protect the remaining forest. (这是一次转变的经历。每年春天来的游客越来越多。帝王蝶每年带来成千上万的游客,促进了当地的经济发展,并为保护剩余的森林提供了新的思路)”可知,作者认为他们2007年的黑脉金斑蝶保护区之行是有益的。故选B。 【小题31】推理判断题。根据最后一段“Other projects like Audubon's Christmas Bird Count have also inspired other young students to embark on careers in science. Engaging in any manner of projects, like monitoring sea level rise, contributes to science and helps get students of any age outdoors. (其他项目,如奥杜邦的圣诞鸟类计数,也激励了其他年轻学生从事科学事业。参与任何形式的项目,比如监测海平面上升,都对科学有贡献,并有助于让任何年龄的学生都能到户外活动)”可知,作者提到奥杜邦的圣诞鸟数是为了显示其鼓舞人心的效果。故选D。 D We all know how it feels to get lost in a great book. Sometimes the characters and emotions can seem as real as those of our everyday lives, But what’s happening in our brains as we dive into those pages? A team led by Leila Wehbe and Tom Mitchell of Carnegie Mellon University’s machine learning department has provided answers to the question. The researchers gathered a group of 8 volunteers, and recorded their brain activity in an fMRI scanner(扫描仪) as they read Chapter 9 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for 45 minutes. Then, they put the volunteers’ fMRI data into a computer program they’d written. They’d designed the program to look for patterns of brain activity that appeared when the volunteers read certain words, particular characters’ names and other features of the story—a total of 195 different “story features”. When the researchers used all the 195 story features, the program was able to guess which passage was being read with an accuracy of 74 percent. Finally, the researchers repeated the test at every brain region, which allowed them to figure out which brain regions are processing which types of information. They find that our brains run individual words through the first round of processing in the visual cortex—the brain area that processes all visual input—and through higher-level processing areas like the left inferior frontal gyrus When the volunteers read descriptions of physical movement in the story, the descriptions adjusted the activity into the regions involved in sensing real-world movement. A variety of characters, meanwhile, were correlated with the activity patterns in the right posterior superior region This all confirm the existence of what researchers call the “protagonist’s perspective(主人公视角)interpreter network(PPIN)”, a network of brain regions that enable us to “become” the protagonist of the story we’re reading. “We maybe not only toward a more accurate rate neural(神经的)model of language processing, but also toward a clearer understanding of how and why it can go wrong,” We h be said. Someday it may help us design individually tailored neurological treatments for reading disorders. And many people may in the future find it easier to get lost in the pages of a good book. 32.How was the study carried out? A.By using an fMRI scanner. B.By reading the book and telling feelings. C.By tracking the brain’s response to a story. D.By processing the book with a program. 33.Why did the researchers repeat the test at every brain region? A.To test its effect. B.To improve the program prediction. C.To confirm “story features”. D.To identify brain’s processing regions. 34.What can we know about the findings of the study in paragraph 5? A.Readers can experience the story through PPIN. B.Higher-level processing areas are for storing words. C.Physical movements are processed in the inferior frontal gyrus. D.Characters are associated with the left posterior superior region. 35.What is a possible application of the study? A.Promoting good reading standards. B.Improving humans intelligence. C.Curing people’s reading disorders. D.Mastering learning skills easier. 根据第三段的“The researchers gathered a group of 8 volunteers, and recorded their brain activity in an fMRI scanner as they read Chapter 9 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for 45 minutes. Then, they put the volunteers’ fMRI data into a computer program they’d written. They’d designed the program to look for patterns of brain activity that appeared when the volunteers read certain words, particular characters’ names and other features of the story—a total of 195 different “story features”.(研究人员召集了8名志愿者,在他们阅读《哈利波特与魔法石》第九章45分钟时,用功能磁共振成像扫描仪记录了他们的大脑活动。然后,他们将志愿者的功能磁共振成像数据输入他们编写的计算机程序。他们设计了这个程序来寻找志愿者在阅读特定的单词、特定人物的名字和故事的其他特征——总共195个不同的“故事特征”时出现的大脑活动模式。)”可知,这项研究是通过寻找大脑活动模式来进行的,即追踪大脑对故事的反应。故选C。 33.推理判断题。根据第四段的“When the researchers used all the 195 story features, the program was able to guess which passage was being read with an accuracy of 74 percent. Finally, the researchers repeated the test at every brain region, which allowed them to figure out which brain regions are processing which types of information.(当研究人员使用所有195个故事特征时,该程序能够以74%的准确率猜出正在阅读的是哪一段。最后,研究人员在每个大脑区域重复测试,这使他们能够弄清楚哪个大脑区域在处理哪种类型的信息。) ”可知,在每个大脑区域重复测试可以让研究人员弄清楚哪些大脑区域处理与故事相关的不同类型的信息,即这样做是为了确定大脑的信息处理区域。故选D。 34.细节理解题。根据第五段的“This all confirm the existence of what researchers call the “protagonist’s perspective interpreter network(PPIN)”, a network of brain regions that enable us to “become” the protagonist of the story we’re reading.(这一切都证实了研究人员所谓的“主人公视角解释网络”的存在,这是一个大脑区域网络,使我们能够“成为”我们正在阅读的故事的主角。)” 故选A。 35. 根据最后一段的“Someday it may help us design individually tailored neurological treatments for reading disorders. And many people may in the future find it easier to get lost in the pages of a good book.(有朝一日,它可能会帮助我们设计出针对阅读障碍的个性化神经疗法。许多人在未来可能会发现更容易迷失在一本好书的页面。)”可知,这项研究提出了在理解大脑语言处理方面的潜在应用,这可能会导致未来针对阅读障碍的个性化治疗。故选C。 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A recent study showed that money can buy happiness, but only a certain amount. The researchers concluded that the ideal (理想的) income for individuals is $95,000 a year for life satisfaction. 36 That means money is only a part of what makes us happy. If we’re really unhappy to our core (核心) inner being, then there are limits to how happy money can make us. What exactly is happiness anyway? Is it a car, a house or a big screen TV? Buying a new car feels great at first. But months and years later, it’ll just be a car. 37 And then you’re back to where you started. Or you’ll want more. Happiness is a feeling. It is often used to describe a range of positive emotions, including joy, pride, contentment, and gratitude. Science now shows that happiness is not about how much money you have, but how you spend it. Donating can help you find the meaning in life. You don’t have to have large amounts of cash to make a difference. 38 Spending money on experiences has been shown to increase happiness as well. 39 You can travel, learn a new musical instrument, or even take a cooking class. 40 It could be sleeping in. It might be a hug or watching a butterfly. Money doesn’t have anything to do with these. However, these are the little things in life that matter. They bring us happiness. Happiness is found in the smallest behaviors rather than material things. A.The newness eventually wears off. B.What else brings a smile to your face? C.How do you develop the right attitude towards money? D.They create memories and connections that can last for a lifetime. E.You can just buy a cup of coffee for the person in line behind you. F.If you see someone else’s fancy car, it’s easy to want the same thing. G.Once that amount is reached, further income is actually related with reduced happiness. 36.根据上文“The researchers concluded that the ideal (理想的) income for individuals is $95,000 a year for life satisfaction.(研究人员得出的结论是,个人的理想年收入是9.5万美元)”可知,上文提到了理想年收入,本句承接上文,说明这一数字对人幸福感的影响。 37.根据上文“What exactly is happiness anyway? Is it a car, a house or a big screen TV? Buying a new car feels great at first. But months and years later, it’ll just be a car.(幸福到底是什么?是一辆车,一所房子还是一台大屏幕电视?刚买新车的时候感觉很棒。但几个月或几年后,它就只是一辆车了)”可知,上文提到随着时间过去,车子也变得习以为常,不再有新鲜感了。故A选项“新鲜感最终会消失”符合语境,故选A。 38.根据上文“Science now shows that happiness is not about how much money you have, but how you spend it. Donating can help you find the meaning in life. You don’t have to have large amounts of cash to make a difference.(现在科学表明,幸福不在于你有多少钱,而在于你如何花钱。捐赠可以帮助你找到生活的意义。你不需要有大量的现金来做出改变)”可知,本句承接上文,说明如何通过捐赠来找到生活的意义。故E选项“你可以给排在你后面的人买杯咖啡”符合语境,故选E。 39.根据上文“Spending money on experiences has been shown to increase happiness as well.(把钱花在体验上也能增加幸福感)”可知,本句承接上文,说明体验带来的影响。 40.根据后文“It could be sleeping in. It might be a hug or watching a butterfly. Money doesn’t have anything to do with these. However, these are the little things in life that matter. They bring us happiness. Happiness is found in the smallest behaviors rather than material things.(可能是睡懒觉。 Jane Goodall was born in London in 1934. One of her first 41 , a gift from her father, was a stuffed chimp Who could have known that her toys predicted Goodall’s life work? Jane was a 42 girl, observing the animals and plants around her. Among her 43 books were The Story of Doctor Dolittle, about a doctor who could talk to 44 , and The Jungle Book, about a boy who grew up in the jungle. Such stories began to 45 an idea in Goodall’s head — a plan to live in Africa among the animals there. In July 1960, she arrived in Gombe National Park beginning a study of wild chimpanzees in Africa. She was to 46 most of the next 25 years there. It was 47 work. The chimps ran away when she came near. Goodall had to 48 watch the chimps from a distance. Gradually they allowed her closer as they got used to her. 49 , the chimps let her follow them closely. They 50 her, sat with her, and even brushed her hairs — something that is usually done within a chimp family. In her years of research, Goodall made 51 that greatly changed the way that we 52 chimps. There were different stands 56 artists could demonstrate their skills and teach the visitors! It was definitely an 57 (excite) experience for a foreign student like me. What caught my attention first was a 15th-century qinghua bowl in a breathtaking exhibition of Chinese porcelain. It 58 (vivid) illustrated a dragon playing with a ball. Then I tried some paper cutting, that is, making images out of paper. It was difficult, 59 a lot of fun! With help from the artist, I managed 60 (make) one in the shape of a fish. Meanwhile, a woman at the next stand was using 61 needle and some thread to do some embroidery. It looked so pretty! Then I went into a section decorated like a 62 (tradition) Chinese study, with two beautiful Chinese paintings of a pine tree and some bamboo 63 (hang) on the walls. There was also an old man 64 (write) Chinese calligraphy: his writing was so free and elegant! Another man sitting next to him showed me how seal cutting works. Chinese characters 65 (carve) into small squares of stone and stamped onto paper with ink. He made one for me with my name in Chinese-pretty awesome! 66. Dear Tom, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Tom, Glad to hear that you will pay a visit to my city and want to taste some specialties, I’m writing to give you some recommendations. It just drew my attention and I began to look around. Suddenly I saw a little child sitting on a rock who was crying. It was around twelve at night. “Why is he here? Why is he crying?” I wondered. And above all I couldn’ t see anyone around him, for he was too small to be alone. I approached him, initially he was frightened but I calmed him down and gave him a chocolate to eat. From the way he ate the chocolate I could make this out that he was very hungry. I felt pity on him, who was a little boy around seven years old. His clothes were all torn. Now he was quite comfortable with me and I asked why he was crying. He told me to look at those waves in the sea and asked how I felt about them. I said they were beautiful. But he made an angry face and said he hated them, because these waves took his parents away. He was just five and since then he started wandering in this unknown city. No one loved him. These words “No one loved him” just took me into a flashback. I suddenly recollected the dark memories of my life. I recalled that I was an orphan (孤儿) and how a couple adopted me when I was four years old. They did a lot for me, because of them today I am the engineer of the biggest shipping company. They were in a sense my true parents but I was so unfortunate that I lost them in an accident nearly three years ago. I remembered how I always wanted to thank them for what all they did for me but I couldn’t. I felt like this lttle boy was at the same situation like mine when I was a four-year old little kid. Now it was my turn I told the little boy about my little old sad story and what I am today. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Now there was a different kind of peace that we both could feel on this shore. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Now it was my turn I told the little boy about my little old sad story and what I am today. Tears rolled down both of our cheeks. I saw his eyes full of tears and my heart was full of love for him. So I asked if he would like to be with me. I was a thirty-seven-year-old man and he was seven. For the first time I saw that if I would have been married then my son would have been innocent like him. He was full of tears, hugged me and kissed me. He told no one has ever loved him like that after his parents’ death. Now there was a different kind of peace that we both could feel on this shore. The only sound that we could hear was waves. The little boy thought for a while and then he took hold of my hand. He said that he accepted me as his friend. Today thirty years have passed, and I am sixty-seven years old, who retired a few years ago and the little boy is thirty-seven. Now he calls me dad and he is a famous doctor in a big hospital. 词汇激活 行为类 ①流泪:tears rolled down one’s cheeks/shed tears ②拥抱:hug/embrace ③接受某人成为朋友:accept sb. as one’s friend/take sb. as one’s friend 情绪类 ①伤心:full of tears/drowned in tears ②爱:full of love/be filled with love 【点睛】[高分句型1] The only sound that we could hear was waves. B Around 20 students from the University of Malta took part in a Chinese tea-tasting event on the campus on Wednesday to add a special flavor to their Chinese-language course. A.teach students how to make Chinese tea. B.test students’ Mandarin language skills. C.market the Confucius Institute’s programs. D.deepen students’ understanding of Chinese culture. 25.How did the event affect Lexuri Vazquez? A.She became fluent in Mandarin. B.She decided to start a tea business. C.She learned to tell different types of tea apart. D.She realized the economic value of tea. 26.How did Jackie Theuma feel about Chinese culture? A.Indifferent. B.Enthusiastic. C.Proud. D.Critical. 27.What is the text mainly about? A.A cultural experience on tea tasting. B.A meaningful event about choosing tea. C.An introduction to the Confucius Institute. D.An explanation of a Chinese-language course. C A monarch butterfly landed on the palm of my open hand. D We all know how it feels to get lost in a great book. Jane Goodall was born in London in 1934. She learned that chimps act more “human” than was ever assumed. Goodall also saw how humans were harming chimps. She began to 53 to tell people about chimps. 66. Dear Tom, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 67. I was walking on the shore when I suddenly heard someone crying. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!6 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null
