Passage 1
The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it. This often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. They want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No thanks”.

根据文章第一段中的“Man can only drink or use the other 3% fresh water which comes from rivers, lakes, and underground.”
根据文章第一段中的“because the number of people in the world is becoming larger and larger, more and more fresh water is needed.”
根据文章第二段中的“Scientists have found some ways to turn salt water into freshwater.”
根据文章第二段和第三段的内容可知,获取淡水的方法有三种:一是通过高温煮沸海水得到淡水(虽然这种方法在文中没有明确列出为“一种方法”,但从“Scientists have found some ways to turn salt water into freshwater”和“One important way is to boil sea water...”

( )41.The Chinese host will ____.
A.offer food and drink needed by a guest
B.refuse to offer food and drink
C.always put more food onto a guest’s plates
D.give little food and drink
( )42.Leaving one’s food on the plate is considered ____ in the West.
A.bad manners B.bad behaviors
C.good manners D.good behaviors
( )43.From the text, the speaker “I” might be ____.
A.a man B.a woman
C.a Chinese D.an American
( )44.Americans will say ____ to show they do not want something.
A.“Thanks” B.“No thanks”
C.“Help yourself” D.“I don’t want more”
( )45.What is the passage talking about?
A.Food and drink B.Impolite and polite
C.Bad and good manners D.Table manners in different customs
【答案】41.C 42.A 43.D 44.B 45.D
根据文章第一段第二句“If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it.”
根据文章第一段第五句“because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate.”
文章提到“I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all.”
根据文章最后一句“If not, they will say, ‘No thanks’.”
