Location and History
Arbeia Roman Fort is situated on Hadrian蒺s
Wall. It was the most important structure built
by the Romans in Britain, and now it has been
a World Heritage

Site. Built around
AD 160, Arbeia Roman Fort was the military

along Hadrian蒺s Wall. The fort has been gradu鄄
ally uncovered and some original parts have
been revealed. There are reconstructions that
show how Arbeia Roman Fort would have
looked.
The Reconstructions
The reconstructions of the Commanding
Officer蒺s house and soldiers蒺 quarters are stri鄄
kingly different. The accommodation for sol鄄
diers is dark and uncomfortable, while the
Commanding Officer蒺s house is spacious and
luxurious, with courtyards with fountains for
him and his family to enjoy.
The Museum
Visit the museum and see many objects
that were found at Arbeia. They are historica鄄
lly important and show what daily life was re鄄
ally like at that time. You will see weapons,
tools, jewellery, and so on. You can also dis鄄
cover how the Romans buried their dead and
see tombstones
(墓碑)
which survive to this
day. There is a
“

”
area allowing visi鄄
tors to dig on a certain site and study their
findings with the help of museum staff. You
can piece together pottery

children, they can build this ancient Roman
fort with building blocks by themselves.

gital products to keep themselves entertained
and to send wishes to family members in other
cities. According to the Ministry of Com鄄
merce, sales of communication equipment and
home appliances rose by 39 percent and 29.9
34
percent during the seven鄄day holiday.
Ma Ke, a white鄄collar worker in Beijing,
did not go back to her hometown in Wuhan,
Hubei Province during the holiday. Instead,
she bought a 5G smartphone and a smartwatch
for her parents as New Year gifts.
“

to issue a vari鄄
ety of coupons
(优惠券)
for dining, movies,
sports and other activities to attract consumers.
Jacky Han, vice鄄president of marketing at
tech company Cheetah Mobile, said shopping
malls play a central yet complicated role in
the retail ecosystem.
“

fessor Ashok Goel of Georgia Tech developed
an artificially intelligent teaching assistant.
This online course is a core requirement of
Georgia Tech蒺s online Master of Science in
Computer Science program. Professor Goel al鄄
ready had eight teaching assistants, but that
wasn蒺t enough to handle the vast number of
daily questions from students.
Many students drop out of online courses
because of the lack of teaching support. When
students feel isolated or confused and reach
out with questions that go unanswered, their
motivation to continue begins to fade. Profe鄄
ssor Goel decided to do something to remedy
this situation and his solution was to create a
virtual assistant named Jill Watson, which is
based on the IBM Watson platform.
Goel and his team developed several ver鄄
sions of Jill Watson before releasing her to the
online forums. At first, the virtual assistant
wasn蒺t too great. But Goel and his team sourced
the online discussion forum to find all the 40,000
questions that had ever been asked since the
class was launched. Then they began to feed
Jill with the questions and answers. After
some adjustment and ample time, Jill was able
to answer the students蒺 questions correctly
97% of the time. The virtual assistant became
so advanced and realistic that the students
didn蒺t know she was a computer. The students,
who were studying artificial intelligence, were
interacting with the virtual assistant and could鄄
n蒺t tell it from a real human being. Goel didn蒺t
inform them about Jill蒺s true identity until
April 26. The students were actually very pos鄄
itive about the experience.
The goal of Professor Goel蒺s virtual a鄄
ssistant next year is to take over answering
40% of all the questions posed by students on
the online forum. The name Jill Watson will,
of course, change to something else next
semester. Professor Goel has a much rosier
forecast on the future of artificial intelligence
than, say, Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Bill
Gates or Steve Wozniak.
28. What do we learn about Knowledge鄄Based
Artificial Intelligence?
A. It is a robot that can answer students蒺
questions.
B. It is a high鄄tech device that revolution鄄
izes teaching.
C. It is a course designed for students to
learn online.
D. It is a computer program that aids stu鄄
dent learning.
29. What does the underlined word
“
remedy
”
in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Boycott. B. Improve.
C. Evaluate. D. Corrupt.
30. What do we learn about Jill Watson?
A. She was unwelcome to students at first.
B. She got along pretty well with students.
C. She turned out to be a great success.
D. She was released online as an experiment.
31. What does Professor Goel plan to do next
with Jill Watson?
A. Assign her to answer more of students蒺
questions.
36
B. Upgrade her intelligence to the level of
top scientists.
C. Launch different versions of her online.
D. Encourage students to interact with her
more freely.

A new device works like a solar panel,
except that it doesn蒺t harvest energy from the
sun. It absorbs energy from the cold night sky.
A prototype
(原型 )
of the device pro鄄
duced enough electricity at night to power a
small light bulb. A bigger version might one
day light rooms or charge phones. It also
could power electronics in remote or low鄄re鄄
source areas that lack electricity.
The device makes use of the temperature
difference between Earth and outer space. It
then uses that difference to create electricity.
As long as one side of it is cooler than the
other, the generator can produce electricity.
The cooler side faces the sky and is attached
to an aluminum plate. That plate is sealed be鄄
neath a transparent cover and surrounded with
insulation
(隔热材料)
to keep out heat. The
bottom of the generator is attached to an ex鄄
posed aluminum plate. That plate is warmed
by the local air. At night, the top plate can get
a couple of degrees Celsius cooler than the
bottom of the generator.
Researchers tested a 20鄄centimeter proto鄄
type one clear December night in Stanford,
California. The generator produced up to about
25 milliwatts of power per square meter of
device. That was enough power to light a small
light鄄emitting diode, or LED bulb. Further
improvements might increase its production to
at least 500 milliwatts per square meter. To do
that, the system might need more insulation
around the cool top plate.
The device also could help power remote
weather stations or other environmental de鄄
vices, says Aaswath Raman. He is a materials
scientist who worked on the device at the U鄄
niversity of California, Los Angeles. This may
be useful in polar regions that don蒺t see sun鄄
light for months at a time, Raman says.
“
If
you have some low鄄power load and you need
to power it through three months of darkness,
this might be a way.
”
32. What can we know about the new device?
A. It gains energy from the sun.
B. It蒺s been widely used in life.
C. It is cooler than a solar panel.
D. It蒺ll be popular in special areas.
33. What does the author mainly talk about in
Paragraph 3?
A. Application fields of the device.
B. The developing process of the device.
C. The working principle of the device.
D. Significant effects of the device.
34. How can the device produce more elec鄄
tricity?
A. By putting more insulation around the
top plate.
B. By using it in extremely cold and clear
nights.
C. By attaching the bottom plate to a warm
plate.

It蒺s Alarming: What Wakes You Up
Each Morning?
How do you wake up in the morning? If
you set an alarm on your phone or clock that
sounds like this: beep beep beep? 36.
Sleep inertia is another term for grogginess
(昏睡 )
, which means a person has a heavy
feeling when waking up, and has trouble ge鄄
tting moving again after sleeping.
37. A recent study says yes. The
answer is music. Researchers say alarms that
have a melody
—
like the beginning of this song
—
can help people feel fresher in the morning.
The study, carried out by researchers in
Australia, involved 50 people. The study sub鄄
jects answered questions about the alarm
sound they like to wake up to, how they feel
about that sound and how they feel when they
wake up. 38 . However, it is early
days and more work is needed to fully know
the answer.
So, what makes musical alarms better for
waking up? The researchers think the music
may be more successful in reducing grogginess
because it has several tones, compared to the
single tone of a
“
beeping
”
alarm. 39.
And is there a kind of music that is best to
wake up to? 40. However, no matter
how you wake up, experts say, the amount of
sleep you get also matters a lot.
A. Can musical alarms work wonders?
B. So, is there a better way to do the trick?
C. This can help you fall asleep more quickly
and easily.
D. There may be a larm sounds that are tune
full and easy to hum or sing along with
may be good choices.
E. The researchers found that people who
wake up to musical alarms reported
feeling more awake and alert.
F. The changes over time between the mu鄄
sic tones may help increase a person蒺s
attention when waking from sleep.
G. That hard, unpleasant sound may be ma鄄
king it harder to shake off the sleepy fee鄄
ling in the morning known as grogginess.

Pam Bales planned a six鄄hour hike through
New Hampshire Mount. On the dashboard

was a detailed plan ensuring she
could return before the arrival of some fore鄄
casted bad weather. Different from former hike,
though, this time, she had packed for almost
every accident and intended to walk alone.
40
At about 8 a.m., she蒺d checked the wea鄄
ther forecast. Bales knew from experience that
her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two
emergency plans and extra layers of clothing
to better protect her core temperature as condi鄄
tions changed.
Bales felt excited as she walked up into
snowy paths. She was wearing a fleece tank
top
(绒衣 )
and hiking pants, and no gloves
or hat because the air was mild. Thirty mi鄄
nutes later, she climbed into colder air and
deeper snows. She now was in a quarter鄄zip
fleece top and gloves. At 10 a.m., the weather
was showing its teeth. Bales added more lay鄄
ers to resist cold winds and dense fog. Making
her way across the snow鄄covered ridge, she
noticed something: a single set of footprints
made by a pair of sneakers. Not giving them
much thought, she walked on.
By 11 a.m., Bales was getting cold. She
decided to return to her car. On her way down,
she again spotted the sneaker tracks, which
suddenly made a hard left鄄hand turn off the
trail. Now she felt genuinely alarmed. She was
sure the hiker lost his way in the low visibili鄄
ty. If Bales continued to follow the tracks,
she蒺d add risk and time to her return. But she
couldn蒺t let this go. She turned to the left and
called out,
“
Hello!
”
Nothing.
Bales followed the tracks, rounded a slight
comer and saw a man sitting motionless. He
wore tennis sneakers, shorts, a light jacket and
fingerless gloves. His skin was pale and he
had a glazed

look on his face.
“
Oh

”
Bales approached and said,
“

The man didn蒺t react. Obviously,
nothing was connecting for him and he was in

Dear Peter,
I蒺m glad to know that you are interested in the story
of Mulan. I蒺m writing to tell you the Chinese version of the
story, which may be slightly different from the film.
Born into a family whose male members were
supposed to be soldiers on standby, Mulan蒺s father had the
obligation to join the army when the country was at war.
However, Mulan蒺s father was too old and weak to do so
while her little brother was too young. With a strong sense
of commitment, she decided to take on the responsibility.
Mulan came up with the idea of dressing herself up as a
man and joined the army in place of her father. Mulan
prepared for the journey carefully so that she could not be
recognised. Then she set off on her epic journey of joining
the army. She was brave, smart and loyal. Finally, Mulan
made it through the war and her bravery was recognised by
the emperor.
Mulan蒺s story is recorded in poems, dramas and
movies for many times. The story of Mulan inspires every
girl to shoulder her duty and achieve whatever she wants
to. In China, Mulan is a symbol of independence, duty,
intelligence and bravery.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
“
Do you think we should ask if we could join the level
one group too?
”
I asked Ann.
“
I know you won蒺t,
”
she
breathed out.
“
I won蒺t!
”
I said to myself, looking at the
awesome mountains in the distance. Then we started up the
steep and rocky path again, attempting to keep up with the
boys. Our bags felt heavier; legs burned; backs hurt; tears
threatened to spill over our sweat鄄covered eyes. I wanted
nothing more than to turn back and leave right then and
there. But, I couldn蒺t; I didn蒺t want to be someone who
gave up easily.
Paragraph 2:
The next days, although extremely tired, we kept on.
Ann and I still found ourselves lagging behind the boys.
Instead of embarrassment, I felt as though I was gaining
more out of the trip than anyone else. As the boys ran, Ann
and I hung back and took breaks, drinking water and
admiring the deep green valleys from high above. Level
two was fun, too. And eventually we made it to the
destination. Facing the beautiful views in front of us, I
exchanged a glance with Ann, both of us beaming.

M: Whoa! Did you just feel that earthquake?
W: Yeah! It felt like a pretty big one!
M: I蒺ve never experienced an earthquake before. I
have to admit that I was pretty scared just now.
W: Ah! It was no big deal. That one was tiny compared
to some of the ones when I was a kid.
M: What was the biggest one that you remember?
W: Well, in 1989, there was a huge one. I think it
measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. I remember the whole
house shaking. Luckily, there wasn蒺t much damage to our
house, but some of my friends were left homeless.
M: So how big do you think this one was?
W: It蒺s hard to say. Usually if it feels strong, it蒺s at

W: No. I hardly ever watch football matches. My
English teacher asked us to write about a football player.
So, I wanted to know something about it. Thank you.

M: I see.
W: And then Janet turned up as usual, just when I was

M: So, what did you do?
W: I had lunch with her.

M: Then don蒺t lend her anything!
W: Now I don蒺t even open the door when she knocks.
I蒺m afraid I蒺ll have to move again.

Technology and Life
Hello, everyone!
Over the last few decades, technologies have been
constantly springing up, which has greatly changed our life.
It is acknowledged that facial recognition makes it easy for
us to get into stations, the airport and other places. Also,
the high鄄speed railway shortens the travelling time between
two cities, enabling us to visit more places conveniently. In
addition, mobile payment, allows us to pay for everything
wherever there is a QR code.
As is known to us, technologies are all around us.
Obviously, they have made our life more efficient and
colorful. Only by making better use of them can we
become the master of life.

Paragraph 1:
Bales stopped being a curious and concerned hiker, and
began a full鄄on rescue mission. Immediately, she braved the
increasingly wild and fierce weather to take off the outer
layers of her clothes to cover the motionless man. And then
Bales tried to help the man have some hot water but in
vain. At the very helpless and even hopeless moment, an
idea occurred to her. Quickly collecting some ice and
snow, she began to rub the man蒺s body, from hands to
arms, from toes to legs. Bales knew clearly it was time鄄
consuming and painstaking, but it was bound to be effective.
Paragraph 2:
Over the next hour, the man began to move and speak.
He first showed the sign of movement through his fingers,
and then opened his eyes. In a weak voice, he thanked
Bales and told her how he lost his way and was trapped
here. Bales kept warming him up until he signaled he could
walk. With the support of Bales, the man finally managed
it back to the car and was sent to the hospital timely. Out
of danger, he said gratefully but for Bales蒺 experience and
skilled rescue, he would never see the beauty of the
