November 11 is Veterans Day in the
United States. A
“
veteran
”
is anyone who has
24
served in the armed forces. The term
“
vete鄄
ran
”
is not just for those who have served in
wars. It describes anyone who has ever been
in the army.
On November 11, people hold ceremonies
and parades
(游行 )
to mark Veterans Day.
Public officials take part in the events. Army
bands play. And soldiers fire guns into the air
to remember those who died in service to their
country.
The history of Veterans Day relates to
World War Ⅰ. Many people at the time called
it
“
the war to end all wars.
”
The United
States entered the fighting in Europe in 1917.
Over 13 million men and women were repor鄄
ted for duty in the army. World War Ⅰ ended
at 11 o蒺clock in the morning on November 11,
1918. The following year, President Woodrow
Wilson signed an official statement to cele鄄
brate November 11th as Armistice Day in the
United States. It would be a day to honour the
men and women who had served in the US
armed forces during the war. In 1926, Congress
made Armistice Day a national holiday.
But new problems were on the way. Soon,
everyone knew that World War Ⅰ would not
be the war to end all wars. In all, more than
4,000,000 Americans served in the armed forces
during the first World War. And 16 million
would serve during the second one.
Armistice Day in 1945 was a special day
in the United States. Germany had surrendered
in May 1945 and Japan in August. Most men
and women who had served in the war were
home. So, instead of honouring just veterans of
World War Ⅰ , Americans also honoured
veterans of World War Ⅱ . In 1954, Congress
decided to change the name of Armistice Day.
The holiday became Veterans Day.
24. Who does Veterans Day honour?
A. Those who lost their lives in wars.
B. Those who served in the wars.
C. Those who served in the army.
D. Those who served in the army in World
War Ⅰ.
25. WhywasNovember 11madeVeterans Day?
A. Because World War Ⅰ ended at 11:00
on November 11.
B. Because Woodrow Wilson signed a
statement to celebrate it.
C. Because the US entered the war on
November 11.
D. Because November 11 was once called
Armistice Day.
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Women were not included in the army
in the wars.
B. Armistice Day was not a national holi鄄
day until 1954.
C. Armistice Day was at first to honour
those who died in the war.
D. More people from the US served in
World War Ⅱ than in World War.
27. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Celebrations on Veterans Day
B. Meaning of Veterans Day
C. Veterans Day
—
a Day for the Army
D. Veterans Day in the US

In 1917 Orville Wright predicted that
“
the
aeroplane will help peace in many ways
—
in
particular I think it will have a tendency to
make war impossible
”
. Earlier in 1904, Ameri鄄
can journalist John Walker declared,
“
As a
peace machine, the value of the aeroplane to
the world will be beyond computation.
”
This
wasn蒺t the first grand promise of technology.
In that same year Jules Verne announced,
“
The submarine
(潜艇)
may be the cause of
bringing battle to a stoppage.
”
Alfred Nobel, sincerely believed his dy鄄
namite
(火药)
would be a war obstacle:
“
My
dynamite will sooner lead to peace than a
thousand world conventions
(公约 )
.
”
Simi鄄
larly, when Hiran Maxim, inventor of the ma鄄
chine gun, was asked in 1893,
“
Will this gun
not make war more terrible?
”
He answered,
“
No, it will make war impossible.
”
Gugliemo
Mareconi, inventor of the radio, told the world
in 1912,
“
The coming of the wireless time
will make war impossible, because it will make
war ridiculous.
”
General James Harbord, chair鄄
man of the board of RCA in 1925, believed,
“
Radio will serve to make the concept of
Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men a re鄄
ality.
”
David Nye, a historian of technology, adds
to the list of inventions imagined as abolishing
war forever and leading to universal peace the
hot鄄air balloon, poison gas, land mines and
laser guns.
It is not that all these inventions are with鄄
out benefits
—
even benefits toward democracy.
Rather, it蒺s the case that each new technology
creates more problems than it solves.
“
Prob鄄
lems are the answers to solutions,
”
says Brian
Arthur.
Most of the new problems in the world
are problems created by previous technology.
These problems are nearly invisible to us. E鄄
very year 1.2 million people die in automobile
accidents. The technological transportation
system kills more people than cancer. Global
warming, environmental poisons, nuclear ter鄄
rorism, and species loss, are only a few of the
many other serious problems troubling people.
If we embrace technology, we need to
face its costs.
28. What will new inventions do according to
the first two paragraphs?
A. They will increase wars.
B. They will lead to peace.
C. They will serve people.
D. They will break conventions.
29. What invention was considered to make war
silly by its inventor?
A. The radio.
B. The aeroplane.
C. Dynamite.
D. The machine gun.
30. Why does the author list so many inven鄄
tions?
A. To show people蒺s creativity.
B. To appreciate their benefits.
C. To contradict the original ideas.
D. To prove grand promises.
26
31. What does the author hope to tell us about
new technology through the text?
A. It will experience many tests.
B. It will bring about huge costs in the world.
C. It provides answers to many problems.
D. It presents more problems than it solves.

A famous Anglican Church stands in a
quiet corner of Dunedin in New Zealand蒺s
South Island. Built in 1865, it is the city蒺s old鄄
est church still in use. Countless couples have
gathered here to marry. It蒺s where morning
tears are shared, friendships formed and com鄄

dows. Known as the

one window portrays the short life of a local
man, John Allen, who died in 1915 in the
Gallipoli campaign in Turkey.
John was the son of Sir James Allen, who
as Minister of Defense, helped plan and ad鄄
minister New Zealand蒺s World WarⅠstrategy,
which saw 100,000 troops sent to fight. With
the war over and his son dead, Sir James chose
to install a window in the church, with which
the Allen family had strong ties.

of
soldiers, while the other has an angel of peace,
along with the words at the bottom,
“
John
Hugh All Gallipoli, 6th June, 1915
”
. Two trees
with local birds on the branches can be seen
and a kiwi walks at the bottom
—
reminders
that John was a lover of birds.
“
There are many war memorials in the
church,
”
says the church.
“
However the
‘
John
Allen window
’
stands out; it touches people
because of the beautiful design, the New
Zealand birds and because John蒺s story, of a
life so full of promise ending tragically in the
war, reflects the lives and stories of so many
others involved in World War.

portrays

?

B. To honour the troops in the Gallipoli
campaign.
C. To remember his son蒺s sacrifice to the

D. Marriage and family.
35. What might be the best title for the text?

Every person has goals in life. Here are
some simple techniques for accomplishing
your goals. 36.
Remain devoted to achieving your goals
and you can become successful in life. You
should be firm. If you are motivated and dri鄄
ven to succeed, then nothing can stop you.
State and define your goals in a specific
way.
37. For example, if you say to
yourself that you want to be successful, it may
be quite difficult to get to that
“
goal
”
because
it is undefined. 38. You may say that
you aim to graduate with honours, or you plan
to become the CEO of your company. By sta鄄
ting exactly what you want to achieve, you
can start planning out the right path that will
lead you toward it.
Develop milestones
The journey to reaching an objective has
a beginning and an end. But you can learn
more from the experience if you break down
your goals into a series of smaller milestones.
39. And it also allows you to stop
and examine your process to see if it needs
improving.
Adopt a positive mind.
In this tough world, the last thing you need
in life is to have a negative mind. 40.
So, make sure you adopt positive thinking to
improve yourself.
A. Stay devoted to your goals.
B. This will help you have an open mind.
C. Unclear goals are never easy to achieve.
D. Instead, you should define your goals in

Sometimes things may seem beyond our
efforts, but keep on and you will find beautiful
views in front of you.
I was on my second outdoor experience
trip that every student had to go on. That year,
we had a choice of what difficulty level we
wanted: one through five. My friends and I
had agreed that one would make us seem lazy
and that challenging ourselves would make for
a good story. In choosing level two, we be鄄
lieved that it would still be a fun experience.
We were quickly proven wrong.
The further we drove into the White Moun鄄
tains, the higher the walls on either side of the
winding highway grew. I was still in awe of
the mountains I had seen so many times be鄄
fore, but I couldn蒺t help feeling my heart
shaking with anxiety. Soon I would have to
leave the school bus that brought 50 students
out into the wilderness like every year before.
My group consisted of my friends, Riley
and Ann, and six extremely athletic boys. We
arrived at base camp lodge
(木屋)
first. After
putting things aside and rearranging our bags,
we made our way out into the wilderness.
The three of us girls were questioning if
this was really a level two. The path was un鄄
believably steep
(陡峭)
and rocky toward the
top of the mountain where the first hut was
located. We were practically jogging in an a鄄
ttempt to keep up with the boys ahead of us.
Before the trip, we were told to take breaks as
often as we needed to drink water, but that
30
wasn蒺t helping our pounding hearts and heavy
breathing as much as it should have.
Then, 30 minutes into the most difficult
hike the three of us had ever done, Riley slipped
and landed on her knee. After a few moments,
we turned back down the mountain as it was
decided that Riley could not make the trip
with us. We sat on the grass outside the lodge
where we had started while Riley was brought
inside to join the level one group. Ann and I
exchanged breathless glances, our cheeks red
and wet with sweat.

There is no doubt that this spirit plays a critical and
profound role in today蒺s fast鄄paced world. To begin with, it
contributes to preserving and spreading precious knowledge
and crafts, which can make great contributions to our

Paragraph 1:
The pay arrived at last. Although the job was very
tiring, I was very happy in my heart for I got something
from my work. The toil of labour was forgotten for the

“

of his words
“

”
.
Paragraph 2:
I understood immediately what my parents were worried
about. They were worried that I was too selfish to give. I
realized that my labour was very hard, but my growth and
our whole family had been depending on the hard work of
my parents! Dad never complained about unfairness! He
even seemed to think that was fair. I thought,

In the evening, Dad came back. I proudly took

M: Hi, Linda. Did you attend Professor Moore蒺s
lecture last night? It was said to be terrific.
W: Sorry, I didn蒺t. I should have been to the school
hall. Everyone said he was a genius. He talked about the
D鄄day landings.
Text 2
M: Hi! What are you doing these days?
W: I am working on my paper about World War II
which was the biggest and deadliest war in history,
involving more than 30 countries.
Text 3
M: We have been researching on the reasons which
promote the war. Lily, what蒺s your answer?
W: I think the Great Depression should be one of the
reasons. A book concerning the Great Depression has
analyzed the role it played during World War Ⅱ.
Text 4
M: Hi, Helen. Where are you off to?
W: To the library. I蒺ve got a history paper due next
week, and need to do some reading.
Text 5
M: What蒺s the name of the film?
W: Saving Private Ryan. It蒺s really an unforgettable
war film. The message of the film is that we want peace;
we don蒺t want war.
Text 6
W: Hey, Michael. Did you hear about the newcomer?
M: Who?
W: We girls just call him Liam Neeson, because he
looks so much like him from the film Schindler蒺s List.
M: Oh, you mean Joey Sanders? He is the new head
of the marketing department.
W: Is he? I thought he was in your department, taking
David Cook蒺s place in charge of the M103 Program.
M: As a matter of fact, I蒺m head of the M103
Program now.
Text 7

M: Great! But first of all, can I know about the hotel
where I蒺m going to stay?
W: Yes, of course. The hotel opened in 2017. And it
is close to Yunnan Normal University.
M: That sounds great.
W: And there are some restaurants near it. So, at
dinner time, you蒺d have a lot of choices.
Text 8
M: My history professor says I should think about a
job in politics. But I don蒺t think I蒺d make a good politician.
W: Why not?
M: You know me. I蒺m not good at dealing with
people. And politicians have to work with people all the
time.
W: That蒺s true. So what do you think you want to do?
M: I think I will be a good artist. I love painting
pictures.
W: That reminds me of a problem I蒺m having. You
know my parents have a restaurant, right? They want me to
be the manager.
M: And you want to?
W: No way. A restaurant manager has to manage
other people. It蒺d be terrible. I蒺m too disorganized. Honestly,
I want to be a teacher because I like working with kids,
and I蒺m good at it.
M: That蒺s true.

M: Hello, boys and girls! Today I will briefly
introduce the United Kingdom from many different aspects.
First, it is one of the most interesting places in the world to
visit, having about 6,400 scenic spots. These include
museums and galleries like the National Gallery and British
Museum, historical monuments like the Tower of London
and Windsor Castle, and so on. Secondly, the United
Kingdom contains some of the world蒺s best institutes of
higher education, such as the universities of Oxford and
Cambridge. Third, the United Kingdom has had a great
influence on the development of cinema and music.
Famous films, including Harry Potter, Star Wars and James
Bond, originated here. Although the James Bond films are
made by American studios, they use British source
materials, locations, actors and film crews. Moreover,
London remains one of the major classical music centres of
the world. The UK was also, along with the US, one of the
main contributors to the development of rock music. Lastly,
a number of major sports originated in the United
Kingdom, including football, rugby, cricket and golf.

W: Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl, her sister, and
her parents moved to the Netherlands from Germany after
Adolf Hitler and the Nazis came to power there in 1933
and made life increasingly difficult for Jews. In 1942,
Frank and her family went into hiding in a secret apartment
behind her father蒺s business in German鄄occupied Amster鄄
dam. Life for the eight people in the small apartment,
which Anne Frank referred to as the Secret Annex, was
tense. The group lived in constant fear of being discovered
and could never go outside. The Franks were discovered in
1944 and sent to concentration camps; only Anne蒺s father
survived. Anne Frank蒺s diary of her family蒺s time in hi鄄
ding, first published in 1947, has been translated into al鄄
most 70 languages and is one of the most widely read ac鄄
counts of the Holocaust. Addressing her diary entries to an
imaginary friend she called Kitty, Anne Frank wrote about
life in hiding, including her impressions of the other inhab鄄
itants of the Secret Annex, her feelings of loneliness and
her frustration over the lack of privacy. While she detailed
typical teenage issues such as crushes on boys, arguments
with her mother and resentments toward her sister, Frank
also displayed keen insight and maturity when she wrote
about the war, humanity and her own identity.

Dear Peter,
I蒺m glad to know that you are interested in the story
of Mulan. I蒺m writing to tell you the Chinese version of the
story, which may be slightly different from the film.
Born into a family whose male members were
supposed to be soldiers on standby, Mulan蒺s father had the
obligation to join the army when the country was at war.
However, Mulan蒺s father was too old and weak to do so
while her little brother was too young. With a strong sense
of commitment, she decided to take on the responsibility.
Mulan came up with the idea of dressing herself up as a
man and joined the army in place of her father. Mulan
prepared for the journey carefully so that she could not be
recognised. Then she set off on her epic journey of joining
the army. She was brave, smart and loyal. Finally, Mulan
made it through the war and her bravery was recognised by
the emperor.
Mulan蒺s story is recorded in poems, dramas and
movies for many times. The story of Mulan inspires every
girl to shoulder her duty and achieve whatever she wants
to. In China, Mulan is a symbol of independence, duty,
intelligence and bravery.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
“
Do you think we should ask if we could join the level
one group too?
”
I asked Ann.
“
I know you won蒺t,
”
she
breathed out.
“
I won蒺t!
”
I said to myself, looking at the
awesome mountains in the distance. Then we started up the
steep and rocky path again, attempting to keep up with the
boys. Our bags felt heavier; legs burned; backs hurt; tears
threatened to spill over our sweat鄄covered eyes. I wanted
nothing more than to turn back and leave right then and
there. But, I couldn蒺t; I didn蒺t want to be someone who
gave up easily.
Paragraph 2:
The next days, although extremely tired, we kept on.
Ann and I still found ourselves lagging behind the boys.
Instead of embarrassment, I felt as though I was gaining
more out of the trip than anyone else. As the boys ran, Ann
and I hung back and took breaks, drinking water and
admiring the deep green valleys from high above. Level
two was fun, too. And eventually we made it to the
destination. Facing the beautiful views in front of us, I
exchanged a glance with Ann, both of us beaming.
