as her page turner.
“
I蒺m not a trained musi鄄
cian, but I蒺ve learnt to read music so I can
help Maria in her performance.
”
Mr. Titterton is chairman of the Omega
Ensemble but has been the group蒺s official
page turner for the past four years. His job is
to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of
the score so the musician doesn蒺t have to
break the flow of sound by doing it them鄄
selves. He said he became just as nervous as
those playing instruments on stage.
“
A lot of skills are needed for the job.
You have to make sure you don蒺t turn two
pages at once and make sure you find the re鄄
peats in the music when you have to go back
to the right spot.
”
Mr. Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of
practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40
minutes and require up to 50 page turns, in鄄
cluding back turns for repeat passages. Silent
onstage communication is key, and each pi鄄
anist has their own style of
“
nodding
”
to in鄄
dicate a page turn which they need to practise
with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are mo鄄
ments when things go wrong.
“
I was turning
the page to get ready for the next page, but
the draft wind from the turn caused the spare
pages to fall off the stand,
”
Mr. Titterton said,
“
Luckily I was able to catch them and put
them back.
”
Most page turners are piano students or
up鄄and鄄coming concert pianists, although Ms.
Raspopova has once asked her husband to help
her out on stage.
“
My husband is the worst page turner,
”
she laughed.
“
He蒺s interested in the music,
feeling every note, and I have to say: Turn,
turn!
”
Robert is the best page turner I蒺ve had
in my entire life.
”
21. What should Titterton be able to do to be a
page turner?
A. Read music.
B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs.
D. Fix the instruments.
22. Which of the following best describes Tit鄄
terton蒺s job on stage?
A. Boring. B. Well鄄paid.
C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
23. What does Titterton need to practise?
A. Counting the pages.
B. Recognising the
“
nodding
”
.
C. Catching falling objects.
D. Performing in his own style.
24. Why isMs. Raspopova蒺s husband
“
the worse
page turner
”
?
A. He has very poor eyesight.
B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music.
D. He forgets to do his job.

I am an active playgoer and play鄄reader,
and perhaps my best reason for editing this
book is a hope of sharing my enthusiasm for
the theater with others. To do this I have searched
through dozens of plays to find the ones that I
think best show the power and purpose of the
14
short play.
Each play has a theme or central idea
which the playwright
(剧作家 )
hopes to get
across through dialogue and action. A few
characters are used to create a single impres鄄
sion growing out of the theme. It is not my in鄄
tention to point out the central theme of each
of the plays in this collection, for that would,
indeed, ruin the pleasure of reading, discussing,
and thinking about the plays and the effective鄄
ness of the playwright. However, a variety of
types is represented here. These include come鄄
dy, satire, poignant drama, historical and re鄄
gional drama. To show the versatility
(多面
性 )
of the short play, I have included a gui鄄
dance play, a radio play and a television play.
Among the writers of the plays in this
collection, Paul Green, Susan Glaspell, Maxwell
Anderson, Thornton Wilder, William Saroyan,
and Tennessee Williams have all received
Pulitzer Prizes for their contributions to the
theater. More information about the play鄄
wrights will be found at the end of this book.
To get the most out of reading these
plays, try to picture the play on stage, with
you, the reader, in the audience. The house鄄
lights dim
(变暗 )
. The curtains are about to
open, and in a few minutes the action and di鄄
alogue will tell you the story.
25. What do we know about the author from the
first paragraph?
A. He has written dozens of plays.
B. He has a deep love for the theater.
C. He is a professional stage actor.
D. He likes reading short plays to others.
26. What does the author avoid doing in his
work?
A. Stating the plays蒺 central ideas.
B. Selecting works by famous playwrights.
C. Including various types of plays.
D. Offering information on the playwrights.
27. What does the author suggest readers do
while reading the plays?
A. Control their feelings.
B. Apply their acting skills.
C. Use their imagination.
D. Keep their audience in mind.
28. What is this text?
A. A short story.
B. An introduction to a book.
C. A play review.
D. An advertisement for a theater.
C
Challenging work that requires lots of ana鄄
lytical thinking, planning and other managerial
skills might help your brain stay sharp as you
age, a study published Wednesday in the jour鄄
nal Neurology suggests.
Researchers from the University of Leipzig
in Germany gathered more than 1,000 retired
workers who were over age 75 and assessed
the volunteers蒺 memory and thinking skills
through a battery of tests. Then, for eight years,
the scientists asked the same group to come
back to the lab every 18 months to take the
same sorts of tests.
Those who had held mentally stimulating

ded to do the best on the tests. And they tend鄄
ed to lose cognitive

function at a
much slower rate than those with the least
mentally challenging jobs. The results held
true even after the scientists accounted for the
participants蒺 overall health status.
“
This works just like physical exercise,
”
says Francisca Then, who led the study.
“
Af鄄
ter a long run, you may feel like you蒺re in
pain, you may feel tired. But it makes you fit.
After a long day at work鄄sure, you will feel
tired, but it can help your brain stay healthy.
”
It蒺s not just corporate jobs, or even paid
work that can help keep your brain fit, then
points out. A waiter蒺s job, for example, that
requires multitasking, teamwork and decision鄄
making could be just as stimulating as any
high鄄level office work. And
“
running a family
household requires high鄄level planning and
coordinating
(协调 )
,
”
she says.
“
You have
to organise the activities of the children and
take care of the bills and groceries.
”
Of course, our brains can decline as we
grow older for lots of reasons
—
including other
environmental influences or genetic factors.
Still, continuing to challenge yourself mentally
and keeping your mind busy can only help.
29. Why did the scientists ask the volunteers
to take the tests?
A. To assess their health status.
B. To evaluate their work habits.
C. To analyze their personality.
D. To measure their mental ability.
30. How does Francisca Then explain her
findings in Paragraph 4?
A. By using an expert蒺s words.
B. By making a comparison.
C. By referring to another study.
D. By introducing a concept.
31. Which of the following is the best title for

A. RetiredWorkersCan PickUpNewSkills

C. Your Tough Job Might Help Keep You

D. Cognitive Function May DeclineAsYou

There is something to be said for being a
generalist, even if you are a specialist. Know鄄
ing a little about a lot of things that interest
you can add to the richness of a whole, well鄄
lived life.
Society pushes us to specialize, to be鄄
come experts. This requires commitment to a
particular occupation, branch of study or re鄄
search. The drawback to being specialists is
we often come to know more and more about
less and less. There is a great deal of pressure
to master one蒺s field. You may pursue train鄄
ing, degrees, or increasing levels of responsi鄄
bility at work. Then you discover the pressure
of having to keep up.
Some people seem willing to work around
the clock in their narrow specialty. But such
commitment can also weaken a sense of free鄄
dom. These specialists could work at the o鄄
16
ffice until ten each night, then look back and
realize they would have loved to have gone
home and enjoyed the sweetness of their fami鄄
ly and friends, or travelled to exciting places,
meeting interesting people. Mastering one
thing to the exclusion
(排除 )
of others can
hold back your true spirit.
Generalists, on the other hand, know a lot
about a wide range of subjects and view the
whole with all its connections. They are peo鄄
ple of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can
bring their broad perspective
(视角)
into spe鄄
cific fields of expertise
(专长 )
. The doctor
who is also a poet and philosopher is a superi鄄
or doctor, one who can give so much more to
his patients than just good medical skills.
Things are connected. Let your expertise
in one field fuel your passions in all related
areas. Some of your interests may not appear
to be connected but, once you explore their
depths, you discover that they are. My editor
Toni, who is also a writer, has edited several
history books. She has decided to study Chi鄄
nese history. Fascinated by the structural beau鄄
ty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is e鄄
qually interested to learn more about Chinese
philosophy.
“
I don蒺t know where it will lead,
but I蒺m excited I蒺m on this pursuit.
”
These expansions into new worlds help us
by giving us new perspectives. We begin to
see the interconnectedness of one thing to a鄄
nother in all aspects of our life, of ourselves
and the universe. Develop broad, general know鄄
ledge and experience. The universe is all yours
to explore and enjoy.
32. To become a specialist, one may have to
.
A. narrow his range of knowledge
B. avoid responsibilities at work
C. know more about the society
D. broaden his perspective on life
33. The specialists mentioned in Paragraph 3
tend to .
A. treasure their freedom
B. travel around the world
C. spend most time working
D. enjoy meeting funny people
34. What does the author intend to show with
the example of Toni?
A. Passion alone does not ensure a person蒺s
success.
B. In鄄depth exploration makes discoveries
possible.
C. Everyone has a chance to succeed in
their pursuit.
D. Seemingly unrelated interests are in a
way connected.
35. What could be the best title for the pas鄄
sage?
A. Be More a Generalist Than a Special鄄
ist
B. Specialist or Generalist: Hard to Decide
C. Turn a Generalist into a Specialist
D. Ways to Become a Generalist

Things to Consider When Choosing a Major
Majors are important in college because
it蒺s what determines not only what degree you
will graduate with, but what career you will be
most qualified for once you蒺ve graduated.
While it might not be something you want to
think about right now, it is something you蒺re
going to decide on eventually.
36.
The biggest thing to remember when
choosing a major is to stick with a subject that
interests you. This is for your career, and you蒺re
much more likely to be happy if you choose a
field that蒺s in line with what you would like to
pursue as a dream job.
37.
It is undeniable
(不可否认的)
that some
careers just make more money than others.
That means that some majors are more valu鄄
able than others, and as college is supposed to
be an investment, thinking about your dream
salary is of great importance. 38. So
don蒺t choose career that will bring you a great
salary but that leaves you feeling depressed
and unhappy.
39.
If you蒺re one of those lucky students who
know what you蒺d like your major to be before
applying for college, we suggest that you re鄄
search your top choices first. Which ones are
best known? Do these programs have a good
reputation for helping students find employ鄄
ment in your field after graduation? Which
schools offer world鄄class professors? These are
important questions, because unfortunately, not
all majors are created equally.
Don蒺t Panic.
If you蒺ve gone through all these tips and
you still don蒺t know what you蒺d like to major
in, don蒺t panic. It蒺s normal to go to college
not having a clear idea of what you蒺d like to
do as a career; it蒺s also normal to think you
know what you want to do as a profession on鄄
ly to change your mind halfway through your
time in college. Remember that college is
about finding what truly motivates you, so
don蒺t panic if it doesn蒺t show up right away.
40.
A. Be confident with yourself.
B. You have time.
C. How much money do you want to make?
D. Talk to professionals in the field.
E. However, remember that your happiness
is very important.
F. What schools are best for your interests?
G. What excites you?

we were off, riding down the field looking for
weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short
way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed
which we missed. Then we began again. This
happened over and over, but we soon learned
to identify different grasses like cockleburs,
lamb蒺s鄄quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds,
the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but
I looked forward to the pay, even though I
wasn蒺t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said,

My dad蒺s words

I wasn蒺t interested. I decided it was not fair
that I had to contribute my money.

Dear Tom,
I am glad to share with you one of my favourite
books, The Hunchback of Notre鄄Dame by Victor Hugo.
Published in 1831, it tells a tragic story of events in Paris.
The main story starts with a kidnap. Ugly Quasimodo
was sent to kidnap beautiful Esmeralda but he failed and
fell in love with her. Soon afterwards, when Esmeralda was
persecuted, Quasimodo rescued her and hid her in the
Notre鄄Dame Cathedral. One day, she was killed, which
happened to be seen by Quasimodo. The killer turned out
to be his master, who had adopted him and had his greatest
respect. Feeling desperate, he killed his master and then
ended his own life.
As is shown in the story, the poor guy with the ugliest
appearance proved to be the one with a beautiful soul.
That蒺s what impressed me most and will push me further in
my life to pursue inner beauty. I hope you蒺ll like it as well.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
Shaw decided to find out the author of the letter. He
shared a photo of the note on Facebook. He also spoke to
the neighbours on both sides of the house. Within two days
he connected David, the now 78鄄year鄄old man living in a
town nearby. They met at the old house, where Shaw
returned him the letter. What a great surprise it was that he
could read the letter again so many years after he wrote it!
Paragraph 2:
A great surprise was on the way. After a pleasant chat,
Shaw handed David a box. Inside it found David all the
presents he had listed in the letter. In fact, it had taken
Shaw much time to collect these presents. He didn蒺t even
know RupertAnnual was a magazine for children before he
was able to get one. David was quite excited

M: Would you mind turning down the TV? I蒺m
answering the phone.
W: Not at all.
Text 3
M: Good morning. I蒺d like to speak to Mr. Johnson,
please.
W: Mr. Johnson is not at this office today. He蒺s at the
head office. He蒺s there Monday, Wednesday and Friday
this week.
Text 4
M: Wow, I didn蒺t know you paint. I wish I learned a
hobby.
W: Hobbies are never too late to learn. There are a
variety of classes at the local community college. You
could look into them.
Text 5
M: Today, our program蒺s guest is Nancy, who works
as a photographer for a fashion magazine. Glad to see you,
Nancy!
W: Glad to see you, Ethan!
Text 6
W: David, you look worried. What did you talk about
with the boss?
M: It was about my promotion to be the manager of
the company.
W: That蒺s really good news. After all, a higher
position means a higher salary. We need more money to
send our son to go abroad.
M: But I don蒺t think I蒺m up to the position. It requires
some communicating skills, but I always feel nervous when
facing people.
W: I think you should give it a go. I know you can
learn quickly. Maybe a course in communication will be
good for you.
M: That蒺s a good idea. I蒺ll read the newspapers to find
a proper course.
W: I蒺m sure you will make it.
Text 7
W: I understand you are writing an article about a
famous painter. Who knew a scientist could have such
interest in the arts!
M: Oh, it蒺s just a post for my personal blog. I research
artists in my free time when the work at the lab isn蒺t too
busy. The piece I蒺m writing now is about Vincent van
Gogh.
W: I love his work! Who isn蒺t amazed by The Starry
Night? A true masterpiece!
M: Funny enough, van Gogh himself wasn蒺t pleased
with that painting. He felt that it was too unrealistic. But I
think it蒺s very calming.
W: The way he painted light was so unique in his
time. His art must have been very popular then.
M: Actually, he never found success while he was
alive. He lived a hard life and died relatively young. It
wasn蒺t until after he passed away that his work was truly
appreciated.
W: He蒺d be happy to see how valuable it is now!
Text 8
W: Where are you going for your holiday this year?
M: I蒺m going to Turkey.
W: Oh, I know Turkey very well. I used to work there
as a tour guide before I came to our company.
M: Did you? How did you get into that?
W: Well, after university I wanted to work in the field
of overseas development. But I needed to clock up some
time living abroad so that they would take me seriously.
Then I met someone who worked as a tour leader and he
told me that his company was on the look鄄out for tour
guides and that I ought to apply. I mean, it was a great
chance to see some new places.
M: It sounds like a perfect job.
W: Well, it was and it wasn蒺t. Turkey was great, the
scenery, the food, the people. But it wasn蒺t much fun
knowing exactly what you will be doing, what you will be
eating, even what you will be talking about every day for
the next three months. It seemed my whole life was
decided for me. I realized it was not what I was really into.
I needed to be able to do my own thing and work on my
own personal projects. So I left the job.

M: Hello, everyone, have you ever heard about the
Sandwich Generation? Actually, this phrase has nothing to
do with food or the people who make sandwiches. It refers
to the generation caught in the middle, or in other words, it
88
参 考 答 案
is the middle鄄aged people who support both their parents
and children whether financially, physically or emotionally.
According to the Healthy China 2030, the average life
expectancy of Chinese people will reach 79 years which is
2 years longer than that in 2018. As people live longer, the
Sandwich Generation is becoming more and more common.
Becoming a part of the Sandwich Generation can affect
your financial status, personal time, health, and career
development. Although both men and women are involved,
women are the ones who are primarily affected. Most
women have common difficulties in dealing with various
aspects including children, older parents, family, work, and
personal well鄄being. Although they are encouraged to go
into the workforce, nursery supply remains the biggest
problem for them. But I don蒺t think it is an unsolvable
problem. In my opinion, if the government gives financial
support to take care of children and parents, it will greatly
reduce the burden on the Sandwich Generation.

I蒺m here today to tell you about my career as a writer.
I wrote my first novel in 1987. I called it Sunset. However,
it didn蒺t come out until 1996, four years after my first
published novel. After school, I went to university where I
studied law. However, I never practiced law. I was lucky
enough to get a holiday job on a local newspaper as a
reporter, and I stayed there. This, of course, gave me lots
of opportunities to improve my writing skills. I had my
first novel published during that period. It was called
Tango. It wasn蒺t a great success, but it gave me useful
contacts in the publishing world. My second novel, The
Ballet Dancer, was much more successful. It even won a
prize for new novelists. Since then, I蒺ve written three more
novels and have also had a couple of collections of short
stories published. At present, I蒺m experimenting with
writing a play

The pay arrived at last. Although the job was very
tiring, I was very happy in my heart for I got something
from my work. The toil of labour was forgotten for the
time being. I thought I should have my own money and
planned how to spend it.
“
How much money have you

”
Dad asked. I was surprised, reluctant to say my
income. The next morning, my dad蒺s livestock truck started
running. I saw my father蒺s hard鄄working figure and thought
of his words
“
A job蒺s a big step to growing up
”
.
Paragraph 2:
I understood immediately what my parents were worried
about. They were worried that I was too selfish to give. I
realized that my labour was very hard, but my growth and
our whole family had been depending on the hard work of
my parents! Dad never complained about unfairness! He
even seemed to think that was fair. I thought,
“
I蒺ve only
worked for two weeks, but how many years my father has
worked!
”
In the evening, Dad came back. I proudly took
out my own money and handed it to Dad.
